Of all the places in the house that we so often overlook adding a little interest and a little charm, for some reason, it's always the laundry room. And for a room being so integral to how the house has to work, we do a disservice to ourself adding the special little details and the things that make it feel nice, 'cause listen, if it's gonna make me feel any better trying to fold some laundry or match some socks, I need every bit of help I can get. Am I alone in that? I hope not. Well, that's exactly what we're talking about. So, the perfect time to listen to this is when you're doing some laundry. Throw it on, and then you can curse along with us as you're pairing the socks. Let's get to it

Of all the places in the house that we so often overlook adding a little interest and a little charm, for some reason, it's always the laundry room. Throw it on, and then you can curse along with us as you're pairing the socks. Let's get to it

Jeremy

Dwayne,

Dwayne

Yes.

Jeremy

that came

Stuart

the

Dwayne

Sadly, I

Stuart

person that came up with today's topic. Oh. Oh my God. We talked about this when you left. Laundry room. Laundry room. Yeah, laundry room. Why did you want to speak about the laundry room?

Jeremy

room? interested.

Dwayne

Um,

Jeremy

Cause I

Dwayne

it's

Stuart

I think, well, well, I think it's always overlooked or

Dwayne

overused, and if

Stuart

and people don't put any effort into it.

Dwayne

and or any

Stuart

You know, they thought into, "Oh, it's just a laundry room." It's like, well,

Dwayne

you know

Stuart

you know what?

Jeremy

it

Dwayne

it, it takes a

Stuart

it, it takes a lot of action. So why don't we think about it and really get it right?

Dwayne

And those who

Stuart

Those who are in the laundry room will love it.

Dwayne

it

Stuart

Plus, it makes it... At the end of the day,

Dwayne

always

Stuart

I, I always worry about the function and the artwork. So that's it.

Jeremy

Well, you

Stuart

Well, you know, it,

Jeremy

I don't remember if

Stuart

I don't know if it was the last podcast or the one before that, it was,

Jeremy

designing

Stuart

design with function in mind, not just the pretty.

Jeremy

so I

Stuart

Right. And so I admitted in our closet that,

Jeremy

so

Stuart

so for me it's like not pretty, it's functional. So that's, that's exactly the way you

Jeremy

the

Stuart

do a laundry room. 'Cause a lau-- Like right after like a kitchen

Jeremy

and a

Stuart

and a bathroom,

Jeremy

like laundry

Stuart

like laundry room, like in my opinion, laundry rooms are above bathrooms. But,

Jeremy

um,

Stuart

um, and even though you could do the bathroom inside, but you're always gonna have a toilet, you're always gonna have a, a place to shower, and always gonna have a place to wash your hands.

Jeremy

But a

Stuart

But a laundry room, you

Jeremy

it can, it can

Stuart

do things that work.

Jeremy

everybody knows they

Stuart

knows they have lived in a house or an apartment or a condo where they went somewhere in their life where they didn't

Jeremy

didn't have a

Stuart

have a laundry room, or the laundry room they had was like a little three by five, two by three maybe, like closet-

Jeremy

and it was a disaster, and they

Stuart

and they wished about it the whole time.

Jeremy

Mm-hmm. Well,

Stuart

Well, okay. So

Jeremy

with with laundry rooms, what kind of tips can we give people?

Dwayne

Well,

Stuart

Well,

Dwayne

I'm doing

Stuart

I'm doing a, a remodel right now.

Dwayne

and it

Stuart

It literally is gutting the interior

Dwayne

And, uh, it's an

Stuart

it's an older house from

Dwayne

1970s, and it

Stuart

and it has

Dwayne

storage

Stuart

garage,

Jeremy

It has a

Dwayne

storage

Stuart

a storage room that's attached to the garage. Like you put

Dwayne

rakes

Stuart

rakes and shovels in,

Jeremy

Mm-hmm.

Stuart

and then it directly backs up to the laundry room. The laundry room

Dwayne

big

Stuart

is big enough for a washer

Dwayne

a little

Stuart

and dryer,

Dwayne

right?

Stuart

a little counter, taking out

Jeremy

"Well, since

Dwayne

taking out fireplaces and moving

Stuart

and load of walls

Dwayne

and

Stuart

the bathroom.

Dwayne

I said, "Can I

Stuart

And he said, "Can I take this wall out between

Dwayne

the laundry

Stuart

laundry room and

Dwayne

garage

Stuart

the garage storage,

Dwayne

close up the

Stuart

close up the door in the laundry room,

Dwayne

and

Stuart

and make it one great big laundry room?"

Dwayne

And the

Stuart

the first answer was,

Dwayne

"Oh,

Stuart

"Oh, no, we need that room for,

Dwayne

storage

Stuart

storage in the garage." And I was like, "Well, what are you gonna put in it?"

Dwayne

"I don't know."

Stuart

You know. You know. Right.

Dwayne

gonna

Stuart

That was the I

Dwayne

Literally, that's I don't

Stuart

don't know. Clearly that's I don't know.

Dwayne

But, you know,

Stuart

You know, anytime you

Dwayne

somebody to

Stuart

somebody to take a closet out or storage, they instantly freeze and lose their minds.

Dwayne

you think

Stuart

They think that, you know, I got a place to put my crap.

Jeremy

Well,

Dwayne

so I

Stuart

so I started-- I said, "You know, if I can capture your laundry room,

Dwayne

this gives me

Stuart

gives me lots of opportunities."

Dwayne

And I said,

Stuart

And I said, "So if I were to look at this as a garage,

Dwayne

imagining, I don't know,

Jeremy

know,

Dwayne

shovels and rakes

Stuart

rakes, and water hoses, and all that kind of stuff, right?" Mm-hmm. She said, "Oh,

Dwayne

yeah."

Stuart

yeah, yeah, yeah."

Dwayne

"So

Stuart

I said, "So it's an attached two-car garage,

Dwayne

but you

Stuart

but you also

Dwayne

a

Stuart

a

Jeremy

detached

Dwayne

two-car

Stuart

two-car garage."

Dwayne

I said,

Stuart

I said,

Dwayne

I

Stuart

"Can I not have,

Dwayne

uh," what's his name?

Stuart

St. Patrick, her husband,

Dwayne

"just

Stuart

just put everything in the detached garage and let that be part of your storage building?"

Dwayne

she's like, I guess so."

Stuart

So

Dwayne

It, it,

Stuart

it

Dwayne

was,

Jeremy

you

Stuart

you know,

Jeremy

it would

Stuart

probably

Dwayne

change, change aversion to

Stuart

entire view of something.

Dwayne

this is

Stuart

Oh, this is how the house is. Even though they're ripping out everything

Dwayne

I don't wanna

Stuart

else, I don't want to take this one wall down.

Dwayne

So,

Stuart

You

Dwayne

and

Stuart

know? And

Dwayne

once I

Stuart

once I started explaining what to do with it and how to use it,

Dwayne

we're on

Stuart

we're on board, and it's exactly what happened. We took the wall out and made a big room.

Dwayne

and now we

Stuart

Now we have,

Dwayne

stations

Stuart

in it and a sink. And she said, "I've, I've never had a laundry room sink.

Dwayne

She said, "Do I--

Stuart

Do I--

Dwayne

don't

Stuart

I don't think I'll use one." I was like, "Well,

Dwayne

how do you...

Stuart

how do you--

Dwayne

if

Stuart

like, if you get your shoes dirty, where do you, where do you wash them?"

Dwayne

and soak them?" Or,

Jeremy

Or,

Stuart

In the kitchen.

Dwayne

ugh.

Jeremy

That's

Stuart

That's why we laughed. Yeah.

Dwayne

Well,

Stuart

I remember that

Jeremy

remember

Stuart

people joke.

Jeremy

it,

Stuart

there, there is this funny, like, mental barrier. I guess it-- the thought is like if you take two spaces and you take a s- a wall down, you make the house one,

Jeremy

that you've

Stuart

so you've somehow lost something.

Jeremy

And I

Stuart

And I think that's how-- where we need to change the perception of we're n- actually not losing something, we're actually gaining

Jeremy

we didn't

Stuart

Like, you've got that luxury of

Jeremy

taking in some space and

Stuart

space and

Jeremy

by all

Stuart

combining it

Jeremy

do it, 'cause it, it will

Stuart

with another space and getting real good stuff out of it.

Jeremy

But don't be

Stuart

You become real good friends. I didn't see it that way, but now that you said it that way, I was like, "Yeah, yeah, it really does once you put it that way." Well, we, we

Jeremy

way. Like, yeah. Well,

Stuart

kind of panicked a little bit

Jeremy

in, out-- when we

Stuart

when we were taking,

Jeremy

fourth

Stuart

floor trenches down

Jeremy

on

Stuart

on our main floor

Jeremy

because we converted

Stuart

part of that is in a closet and we need to put a washer and dryer in a closet in that room. Does it make any sense that I can-- if I walk you by the bedroom- Mm-hmm that's converting to our closet,

Jeremy

and that

Stuart

in that bedroom originally had a closet,

Jeremy

and

Stuart

and in that closet is where we put our washer and dryer.

Jeremy

there's a

Stuart

So there's a closet in that closet.

Jeremy

But, and so we

Stuart

and so we were worried, like sadly, sadly, I want to say

Dwayne

you, you're not

Stuart

to you, you're not very closet-ish.

Jeremy

I started-- I was gonna

Stuart

I was trying to make you- Hmm.

Jeremy

I'll do it in the closet,"

Stuart

It's been a long time since I've been in there. I-

Jeremy

Um, okay,

Stuart

okay, so if you have somebody that doesn't have--

Jeremy

they

Stuart

if they can't

Jeremy

some

Stuart

take

Jeremy

a wall

Stuart

a wall down,

Jeremy

are there

Stuart

are there things that you would suggest

Jeremy

or things

Stuart

or things you've done

Jeremy

that can- potentially help in any capacity?

Dwayne

Get your lighting right, because usually it

Stuart

Usually it has a mood light right in the middle of the room. You can't see- Yeah.

Jeremy

get

Stuart

I know they

Jeremy

a

Stuart

have the mood lights because,

Jeremy

middle of the room so you can't

Stuart

They're cheap.

Jeremy

Why

Dwayne

Mm-hmm.

Stuart

No, it's just like... It

Jeremy

lights because, uh, they're

Stuart

is. But treat, treat, treat it like any other room in the house right first. Like if you, if you, if you... You know, it's a pretty light thing to do.

Jeremy

happy.

Dwayne

Well, that's

Stuart

That's the part of it is that the laundry room for most people is an afterthought, and that's why we're doing this. Right.

Dwayne

it doesn't need to be an afterthought.

Stuart

It needs to be thought

Dwayne

of because,

Stuart

because,

Dwayne

you know, you put a

Stuart

you know, you put a whole lot of effort into a,

Dwayne

a, a guest bedroom that you don't use

Stuart

hopefully very much,

Dwayne

yet

Stuart

but yet you're in this laundry room 10 times a day.

Jeremy

Mm-hmm.

Dwayne

So

Stuart

Right.

Dwayne

g- get the

Stuart

Get the lights on. That's an easy, easy thing. You know,

Jeremy

fix.

Dwayne

And

Stuart

now

Dwayne

make,

Stuart

make, um,

Dwayne

LED

Stuart

LED can lights

Dwayne

they're,

Stuart

that are not necessarily... I'm talking about

Dwayne

installation, stuff like

Stuart

and stuff like that, but just the lights themselves are

Dwayne

30 bucks, I

Stuart

bucks. I mean,

Dwayne

bucks

Stuart

they're 25 bucks or so. Get you a few of those, and it will change your life because as you see what you're...

Dwayne

s- Look, I

Stuart

Look,

Jeremy

I put on,

Dwayne

I've dug

Stuart

I've been honest. I've said that before. We did

Dwayne

all

Stuart

all three of them.

Dwayne

a

Stuart

Had the booth stay right in the middle of my chest,

Dwayne

tells

Stuart

that tells you- I brought the laundry in first. They all...

Jeremy

every

Stuart

Because at that moment,

Dwayne

when he

Stuart

it wouldn't deny. It truly didn't change. The brainwashing part, but, uh,

Dwayne

like at least I could

Stuart

at least I could see it in the laundry room, right?

Dwayne

in our laundry

Stuart

Because in our laundry room- Well, you have a nice big window. Yeah.

Jeremy

a

Dwayne

I-- There

Stuart

got a window and counters, yeah.

Dwayne

Yeah, it's-- no, I, I, it's,

Stuart

you know,

Jeremy

a,

Stuart

I, I... It is a lucky

Dwayne

as a

Stuart

part of the deal, but that was a...

Dwayne

So the

Stuart

So the backstory is when I'm telling you about

Dwayne

the house I'm

Stuart

the house I'm talking about remodeling, it has a storage room that heads to the garage

Dwayne

that we

Stuart

that we took the wall out. Our house plan called for that exactly.

Dwayne

I

Stuart

So I wasn't, I wasn't even being smart.

Dwayne

was just

Stuart

I was just gonna

Jeremy

a

Stuart

replay exactly what I did 20 years ago when we built

Dwayne

the house.

Stuart

house,

Dwayne

I

Jeremy

and

Dwayne

looked at it, and it, we did exactly that same situation. And actually,

Stuart

that's what I was gonna do. It, it actually,

Dwayne

Stuart,

Stuart

there is that,

Dwayne

plan

Stuart

house plan didn't call for a window because the rooms were so small, it, it was chopped up. And again, it goes back to

Dwayne

the,

Jeremy

the

Dwayne

because the,

Stuart

the,

Dwayne

the, the,

Stuart

the interior room, if you speak, was right out the garage door, so-

Dwayne

wouldn't have had a window. So

Stuart

And so the exterior room

Dwayne

what the

Stuart

was what the storage room would have been in the garage. Does that make sense?

Dwayne

Mm-hmm. And

Stuart

Mm-hmm.

Dwayne

have a

Stuart

didn't have a window or something. And we want the window

Dwayne

in a

Stuart

in a storage room, so we'll pay for it, but it'd be a complete waste of room and raise the price.

Dwayne

when we

Stuart

When we took the wall down, then we had to have that wall. Obviously, well,

Dwayne

a window

Stuart

window in and then take this right under the window. So it's not only-- It was a purposeful, thoughtful decision

Dwayne

20 years

Stuart

20 years ago. Oh,

Dwayne

now I

Stuart

well, now I can get light in here. Right. And not only that, but it's also beautiful and pretty. Uh, we have a, an ironing board that's an old school

Dwayne

am

Stuart

iron board with,

Jeremy

least.

Stuart

on the wall. You know, it's just one of those

Dwayne

$200 $200

Stuart

$200 things that hang on the wall.

Dwayne

Um,

Stuart

But, but it hangs. It's- So it folds down.

Jeremy

thank

Stuart

Right. Yes, folds down.

Dwayne

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's,

Stuart

It's

Jeremy

It's,

Stuart

got,

Dwayne

got a

Stuart

it's got this little cabinet with a glass door on it. It's like a little mini,

Dwayne

uh, ironing board, but it's

Stuart

board, but it's more than enough. So,

Jeremy

And, uh, So, uh, he

Dwayne

and, uh, anyway, that, you know, we got that.

Stuart

that,

Dwayne

c- is

Stuart

that means those are not super expensive, but

Dwayne

did one

Stuart

I did look for a house a long time ago and

Dwayne

we put it in her,

Stuart

put in a

Dwayne

her

Jeremy

a

Dwayne

master closet and you

Stuart

where you opened it up

Dwayne

it,

Stuart

and it, it lit up, and it had a light built into it and all kinds of stuff. So you can get all kinds of versions of those things hanging on the wall. It, it's for my bar owning music playing hillbilly judge. She, she loves her some good...

Dwayne

She's an Eastern

Stuart

eastern Kentucky hillbilly girl, so she loves the ironing board

Jeremy

Mm-hmm. So the

Stuart

God.

Dwayne

so in the window, like you said, Stuart,

Stuart

It can be a lot. You

Dwayne

key. That,

Stuart

that are just not... But that's where you need to start.

Jeremy

things

Stuart

Well,

Dwayne

you can

Stuart

so we can see what you're doing. With windows, this is where I'm going through. And my husband did something very interesting. This, this, this is a problem that

Jeremy

Our pr-

Stuart

I have is the clo- uh, closet,

Jeremy

uh, laundry room

Stuart

laundry room that's on the front of the house, where I think it's, it's pretty common for a lot of people. And

Jeremy

I guess,

Stuart

I get

Jeremy

the

Stuart

depressed.

Jeremy

we

Stuart

Well, we are on, like I mentioned we are on a main intersection,

Jeremy

we have a

Stuart

a very busy, intersection stop in front of our house. So people are always stopping. Uh,

Jeremy

well, if

Stuart

well, not-

Jeremy

at night, I hate

Stuart

you

Jeremy

people

Stuart

people being able to look in.

Jeremy

Now we've

Stuart

Now we've got these boxes of valances that are in there.

Jeremy

and so

Stuart

so I'm

Jeremy

Motorized

Stuart

roller shades

Jeremy

that will

Stuart

that will be hidden,

Jeremy

that will

Stuart

that will just come down at night, because I hate the idea of people looking at me. Right.

Jeremy

It doesn't bother me on the other ones 'cause I've all

Stuart

It won't bother me on the other wing because I've got regular windows. And they'll look at me.

Jeremy

I'm like,

Stuart

It's funny because I'm like, "I don't want people looking at me folding my Hmm.

Jeremy

Is that weird? just don't like people looking in like

Dwayne

no, well, no,

Stuart

No.

Dwayne

well, first, we're not gonna

Stuart

We're not gonna guess what you do. You do what you feel comfortable.

Dwayne

I

Stuart

But I would probably guess they would say

Dwayne

most

Stuart

most people are gonna drive by and walk past you pretty fast, and they're not really gonna look at you Looking into your laundry and it's probably just a piece

Dwayne

did care,

Stuart

underwear.

Dwayne

you just hold the

Stuart

Holding underwear up and just say, "Look at me."

Dwayne

at the end

Stuart

end of the day, I mean, if you

Dwayne

underwear,

Stuart

underwear out, do you wear it? Right.

Jeremy

you know, the, the, I

Stuart

I think the reason-

Dwayne

there.

Stuart

Well-

Dwayne

a boxer or a brief,

Stuart

Oh my lord.

Dwayne

Well, we'll

Stuart

Whatever.

Jeremy

I'm not a

Stuart

I'm not a breezy person.

Jeremy

I, I'll

Stuart

I'll wear whatever I want.

Jeremy

I have

Stuart

I have no problem. I, I'm not, I'm not, uh, exclusive. But,

Dwayne

for those

Stuart

for those blisters that are,

Dwayne

in

Stuart

in

Jeremy

now.

Stuart

your neighborhood, they

Dwayne

they don't,

Stuart

don't-- They won't opal you now. They just know what you wear, and they don't care. Well, let me tell you why I'm-

Jeremy

about the

Stuart

paranoid about the people looking. After we first moved into the house, um,

Jeremy

we basically

Stuart

spent a little bit of time kind of looking through here, and we didn't have our draperies,

Jeremy

up

Stuart

up yet.

Jeremy

And

Stuart

I was

Jeremy

watching, Orange Is

Stuart

Orange Is the New Black.

Jeremy

And, uh, if you don't know about

Stuart

if you don't know about the show,

Jeremy

like it's,

Stuart

it's like

Jeremy

women's

Stuart

women's prison. There are all these women telling stories, and there's

Jeremy

sex

Stuart

set pieces that are different. And one time I was leaving, and I guess I was trying to go through the garage on my feet

Jeremy

had to

Stuart

or heading

Jeremy

store.

Stuart

around to

Jeremy

don't know

Stuart

the garage door. I, I don't know what I was doing, but I was

Jeremy

my

Stuart

outside the house, and I got to the stop sign,

Jeremy

just

Stuart

and I just happened to look over, and all I had were titties in my face.

Dwayne

Oh.

Jeremy

"Oh my

Stuart

my God.

Dwayne

And

Stuart

you want me to say? I hear this.

Dwayne

that

Stuart

That probably doesn't happen much in your life. No.

Dwayne

No.

Stuart

Mm-mm.

Dwayne

Okay. Okay.

Jeremy

I

Stuart

Right. So I was looking, and,

Jeremy

but

Stuart

but it, it, it terrorized me to the point of, "Oh my God, I have to have these things closed because people are stopped here constantly." Like if they drive by, that's one thing, but we have a four-way stop. Everybody's

Jeremy

it's

Stuart

stopping. So I'm trying to protect the people in my neighborhood and me.

Jeremy

The neighbors. Maybe your TV's

Dwayne

And they

Stuart

And they- Maybe your TV's too big. No, no, no. We don't have a big

Jeremy

We don't have, we don't

Stuart

TV.

Jeremy

We are not

Dwayne

Or the boobs are too big. Maybe. You never

Stuart

Yeah.

Jeremy

remember correctly in the, that video, it w- that

Stuart

Like we gave one away.

Jeremy

and we

Stuart

He was mentioning that

Jeremy

But

Dwayne

Can you imagine the, the people driving by? Well, look

Stuart

when people drive by his place, it's so dang- Well, Lord.

Jeremy

"I

Dwayne

Mm-hmm.

Jeremy

were

Stuart

They were just

Jeremy

Why are there boobs on their TV?"

Stuart

Like, "What the heck?" "Are they watching me?" Um, that's what

Jeremy

I'm gonna do is to

Stuart

to do is just build, um...

Dwayne

Oh,

Jeremy

if

Stuart

if there's... If it's a long house, you kind of figure out you're planning it,

Jeremy

is a lot of

Stuart

a lot of people love the idea of

Jeremy

you get the

Stuart

is get the front door to instead of the

Jeremy

to, you know, set them side by

Stuart

side-by-side and put a counter on top, i think that's fine and dandy,

Jeremy

But

Stuart

and maybe. But I will always suggest if you can, to stack them Mm-hmm because the vertical space becomes something so much easier to use for many different things. you're going to use it.

Jeremy

in,

Stuart

You know, on a daily basis, right?

Jeremy

laundry room to begin with, right?

Stuart

So if you can stack them that space to be taken up

Jeremy

with

Stuart

right with the machine, and then you'll think about that space you gain from moving the machine

Jeremy

machine

Stuart

can make one machine come from the left at the top or right from the top and come all the way to the other side.

Jeremy

Now you've

Stuart

Now you've got a whole big area

Jeremy

do

Stuart

you can do dry racks, hanging things,

Jeremy

um, extra storage

Stuart

storage Then the folding table,

Jeremy

bars up

Stuart

bars.

Jeremy

there's-- It gives you a

Stuart

gives you a lot more possibility there that you actually have access to, aside from if you're five foot two and you're trying to

Jeremy

reach

Stuart

reach above one of these front loaders to try to put something on there. Get a stool.

Jeremy

it. Guess what? And

Stuart

Get a stool.

Jeremy

though there's a

Stuart

It doesn't get you, that doesn't get you everything up. Yeah.

Jeremy

a,

Stuart

of the

Jeremy

one of those like

Stuart

things for a home like this

Jeremy

beau-beautiful laundry

Stuart

often, but before it would be for a few things and six foot like I am. Right. You couldn't- It's amazing how much- Well, LG has finally made a washer-dryer stack that all the controls are in the middle. All of them in the middle.

Jeremy

are all in one.

Stuart

oh very smart?

Jeremy

Cause we

Stuart

Because we just got one for Uncle Pete's new house when he renovated and stuff, and I was like, "All the controls are in the middle." So yeah, I had never seen one. Yeah.

Dwayne

That's a... See, okay, that's a, that's a

Stuart

That's awesome. Yeah. Well, I have to tell you, our washer and dryer are front load and they are

Dwayne

by

Stuart

side by side.

Jeremy

Mm-hmm.

Dwayne

and then

Stuart

and then Kathy has this,

Dwayne

because she

Stuart

this, Kathy has back issues

Dwayne

that, uh, when we

Stuart

when we remodeled this,

Dwayne

that they

Stuart

that she couldn't go up and down. So she had Ray,

Dwayne

uh, our contractor, build, uh, I don't know,

Stuart

I don't know, six or eight inches

Dwayne

base out of wood, you know, with enough for the,

Stuart

platform for her. And that way I was able to

Dwayne

what it,

Stuart

do a top

Dwayne

So five and a quarter is

Stuart

load.

Dwayne

Uh, and raise it

Stuart

it raised it up a little bit. So

Dwayne

countertop, and

Stuart

up with

Dwayne

up, and it's another

Stuart

and then it brought us up another countertop.

Dwayne

And when I

Stuart

And when I first looked at it, I was like, "That's gonna be a little tall."

Dwayne

But at the end

Stuart

But at the end of the day,

Dwayne

uh, it did,

Stuart

it di- and it's funny, it's almost like for us, it's the ideal height for folding everything

Dwayne

because we

Stuart

of

Dwayne

have two

Stuart

us. But that, that...

Dwayne

And

Stuart

And we'll, we'll

Dwayne

show you

Stuart

show you pictures, get pictures up when we talk about it on the podcast. Um,

Dwayne

but for

Stuart

but for ours, that it serves as a place

Dwayne

us a place to sit

Stuart

to put the laundry basket and the folders. Hmm.

Jeremy

Well,

Stuart

Hmm.

Jeremy

Lord

Stuart

Lord knows I love a folding

Jeremy

I'm so

Stuart

table, and I'm so thankful that we have our little,

Jeremy

uh,

Stuart

island that's made of that. Again, we did not get a... Unfortunately,

Jeremy

went...

Stuart

we went with, we went to Ikea and I did not get like the cheapest

Jeremy

one that they

Stuart

one that they had. We got one that at the time was a nicer quality of hardwood

Jeremy

like actually

Stuart

think it was made out of like real wood versus-

Jeremy

was a long time ago. Um,

Stuart

anyways, I had to put

Jeremy

plank

Stuart

plank foam on the back of it because it wasn't finished off, and then

Jeremy

called

Stuart

the stone guy and

Jeremy

had a

Stuart

piece of stone cut for the top. So we have a real nice island. The stone cost more than the piece of furniture

Jeremy

did.

Dwayne

Well, that's a high

Stuart

a high low.. Ok, I'm going to tell you what we spent

Dwayne

on our

Stuart

on our laundry room, but i'm going to say help

Dwayne

me remember to talk about Robin and her laundry room

Stuart

So,

Dwayne

laundry room. Okay. So

Jeremy

so

Dwayne

our,

Stuart

laundry room, and again I'll show pictures is

Dwayne

pretty. It's very

Stuart

there the cabinetry,

Dwayne

came

Stuart

from Lowes!. It's just low.

Jeremy

Stock

Stuart

oak cabinetry if you have any reference at all. It's not fancy. And,

Dwayne

we painted it up, trimmed it

Stuart

and got a good trim carpenter,

Dwayne

Probably

Stuart

probably put more money on wallpaper

Dwayne

than we did on the cabinets,

Stuart

cabinets. Definitely put more money on the countertop than the cabinets.

Dwayne

But it's the

Stuart

But it's the idea of you don't have to do everything high, high. You know, for example,

Dwayne

don't

Stuart

and you don't have to do everything low because that also shows

Jeremy

shows up.

Stuart

so you can mix it up and So

Dwayne

it up

Stuart

once it's all said

Dwayne

said and

Stuart

I'm just proud of the fact that the cabinetry looks pretty good And it's just low, modest cabinetry. Un-unpainted, unstained,

Dwayne

basic, off the

Stuart

top shelves with took

Dwayne

the truck

Stuart

loaded it up

Dwayne

it took it home

Stuart

kind of thing, kind of amazing Hmm.

Jeremy

Thing. Hmm. Pretty pretty. Hmm.

Dwayne

Now, I will

Stuart

I will say

Dwayne

Robin

Stuart

laundry room,

Dwayne

is

Stuart

it's not huge.

Dwayne

Truthfully spent

Stuart

a small

Dwayne

fortune

Stuart

on it

Dwayne

it.

Stuart

And because it's right off her kitchen on the main part of the house and you see it, it's very prominent,

Dwayne

And we had beautiful painted cabinets. We actually did reclaimed h- um,

Stuart

um,

Dwayne

wood countertops, um, kind of very

Stuart

Kentucky

Dwayne

looking, uh, had

Stuart

had lockers built in.

Jeremy

Beautiful. Well,

Stuart

she needed it to be a laundry room slash storage for the kids slash bar because she's a nice catholic

Dwayne

uh, I was like... I'm like,

Stuart

Like, i can't get it to be like a backpack and for laundry room and your, your

Dwayne

your alcohol, right? It's not

Stuart

It's not, it's not that big a space. And she's like "well, that's what it has to do"

Jeremy

Well,

Dwayne

I figured

Stuart

And I figured it out and it turned out beautiful.

Dwayne

But the

Stuart

But the long story

Jeremy

is

Dwayne

I gave her

Stuart

I gave it to the

Jeremy

that

Dwayne

countertop

Stuart

countertop to fold everything right, like you talked.

Dwayne

Talked about,

Stuart

the folding station Well, I go there once and she's folding clothese in her dining room

Dwayne

right next to it

Stuart

hahaha

Dwayne

And I'm like, "Well,

Stuart

back

Jeremy

How

Dwayne

why, why..."

Jeremy

much

Dwayne

you know her, right? You know her,

Stuart

Yeah. Yeah. And I'm like, why aren't you folding this in your laundy,

Dwayne

room?"

Jeremy

well come here

Stuart

and I walked in, and LORD

Dwayne

Well,

Stuart

that husband of hers had bought

Dwayne

hers

Stuart

had bought more bourbon

Dwayne

and it

Stuart

and it was--

Dwayne

that

Stuart

that folding station had turned into a full raging bar

Dwayne

so it's beautiful to look at

Stuart

but anyway. And

Dwayne

The

Stuart

the laundry room turns into more of a bar versus a laundry room. I love that. It makes sense. It makes no sense, but i'm telling you it worked. Well, you know, kind of like what you talked about with your

Jeremy

laundry room, like with

Stuart

room, like with the wallpaper

Jeremy

you know, all

Stuart

and all that treating a true laundry room like it's a regular room in the house

Jeremy

I

Stuart

I want to

Jeremy

sure that

Stuart

I say this

Jeremy

with a little bit

Stuart

caution because laundry room are a great place like a powder room. You have some fun wallpaper or some color.

Jeremy

color. but good God, let's not make it Pee-wee's Playhouse 'cause people can

Stuart

Yeah. It can go from bland to what the fuck real fast Yeah. Yeah.

Jeremy

You know what I mean?

Stuart

I agree. Yeah, I, I think that's something I've mentioned before when you were on here.

Jeremy

we were in Nashville on a tour of homes

Stuart

and there was this cute,

Jeremy

laundry room. It was

Stuart

transfer, and they decided they wanted blue cabinetry and they picked the worst color imaginable

Jeremy

they could

Stuart

but even if you tried to look

Jeremy

past that

Stuart

even if

Jeremy

it had,

Stuart

they fun wallpaper, and then they had found a fun mosaic plaid, uh, tile,

Jeremy

that they

Stuart

then they used as a backsplash,

Jeremy

I

Stuart

Which I love the plaid tile It was just using it all in combination was a disaster.

Jeremy

Then

Stuart

they used some, like, graphically

Jeremy

printed,

Stuart

floor tile in there in

Jeremy

casino in Las Vegas. There was

Stuart

pattern everywhere.

Jeremy

And you, you know, it

Stuart

It looked so garish. But I'm sure whoever did it,

Jeremy

I think they

Stuart

they had a

Jeremy

wiener dog,

Stuart

because there were weiner dogs in

Jeremy

the wallpaper.

Stuart

it brought them

Jeremy

so much happiness

Stuart

but i thought

Jeremy

Lord

Stuart

this is the ugliest damn thing and they spent so much money on it

Jeremy

It was Peewee's Dog house, it was awful

Stuart

Oh my God.

Dwayne

Well, I just finished a laundry room and I

Stuart

worried,

Dwayne

that, mm, how to say? She

Stuart

She says, "I want,

Dwayne

I want it

Stuart

I want navy and hot pink." And I was like, "Oh, gosh", and she's bold

Jeremy

So,

Dwayne

what I end up doing, and I

Stuart

And I

Dwayne

time I

Stuart

was oh I hope this turns out and

Dwayne

It's not

Stuart

it's not a huge laundry room, so what i did was

Dwayne

color

Stuart

drenched everything and painted absolutely everything navy blue It was scary for,

Dwayne

a laundry

Stuart

laundry room. but we put down white hexagon marble floors, um, painted on laundry doors, white countertops.

Dwayne

But then the fun

Stuart

But the fun punches are that I wallpapered the ceiling,

Dwayne

and I

Stuart

and I have this white and hot pink lattice.

Dwayne

And

Stuart

And then the window treatment is a floral print that's just the wallpaper that's out in the hall way so it connects the dots.

Dwayne

This

Stuart

this was one of those where i

Dwayne

was

Stuart

I was worried painting something that dark that dark, that what she wanted was navy

Dwayne

hot

Stuart

and hot pink.

Dwayne

I

Stuart

And I knew that the

Dwayne

busy wallpaper

Stuart

out in the hall was already pre-planned,

Dwayne

I had to

Stuart

so I had to work that into

Jeremy

into

Dwayne

a

Stuart

in a way But I was worried about that one, but it turned out

Dwayne

I'm probably a little more conservative than not, and this was a bit strong,

Stuart

being strong, but she loves it, and it turned out pretty cute, so wallpaper on the ceiling You know, there's a little

Dwayne

thing to

Stuart

bit

Dwayne

because it's a little bit of

Stuart

it

Dwayne

and it does a whole lot.

Jeremy

Mm-hmm.

Stuart

Well, I've been kind of quiet today 'cause I have a headache,

Jeremy

too much money on it and

Stuart

and

Jeremy

And,

Stuart

so

Jeremy

you know. You say that, but you have a beautiful closet. It's

Stuart

It's a foreign thing to me. No. No.

Dwayne

Now, wait a minute. In your

Stuart

I'm playing.

Dwayne

aren't you doing a big fancy laundry room, and we had a controversy about a countertop?

Stuart

No.

Dwayne

maybe? Nope. Nope. Okay.

Stuart

yes. Yeah, flooring because I have a pink and tan and speckled terrazzo floor.

Jeremy

floor.

Stuart

That was a debate.

Dwayne

Yeah.

Stuart

actually, no, um, the laundry room itself currently and in the new one

Jeremy

one is

Stuart

large at all. But we have a stack, and then we have a pantry unit next to it, and then we have enough for a folding counter next to it.

Jeremy

to

Stuart

But truly, laundry in our house is every day.

Jeremy

day.

Stuart

day.

Jeremy

Mm-hmm.

Stuart

One, because, my Jeremy's very OCD about laundry, and if there is something in the laundry hamper at 5:15 when he gets home, the washer's going at 5:16.

Jeremy

Hmm.

Stuart

Like, literally every day. So we efficiently use that space a whole lot. But what we don't have in the current house, which we are blowing out in the new house, is a mudroom, which is actually separate from our laundry room because that's where shoes and backpacks and extra refrigerator and dog crates and all of those things are gonna go. And it's, oh, it's probably 400 square feet

Jeremy

feet of nothing, you

Stuart

a mudroom, you know. But that's what we use more than a laundry room because

Jeremy

Cause

Stuart

laundry, it's... You might do two loads in a day, but it's, it's done, it's folded, it's put away. It's-- Nothing's there. So

Jeremy

fancy. So yeah. I've got laundry that's in the washer today that w- I put in two nights ago and washed it. I haven't gotten it out yet to put it in the dryer.

Stuart

Oh my God.

Jeremy

I've got to

Dwayne

Well,

Jeremy

I come in. actually, I'm not gonna. I have to rewash it. I have to rewash it,

Dwayne

Yeah, I'm

Stuart

Yeah. I was gonna say, rinse that again. You're a person--

Dwayne

the person... Are you

Stuart

Are

Dwayne

s- you used to b-

Stuart

you--

Dwayne

socks

Stuart

have to keep buying socks because you weren't doing the laundry room. Yeah. Are you still doing that

Jeremy

okay, so first, uh, there's

Stuart

few things on the planet that i love more?

Jeremy

Than a new pair of socks. Oh, God, they just, they're so good. I read once that Justin Timberlake, this was early on, once they hit it big, that was one thing that he never washed. He always bought, he wore new socks every day he liked it. And I'm like, "Oh, I connect with the rich and famous. I get this. I understand this. I want that."

Stuart

But how wasteful, right. How wasteful.,

Jeremy

Um, no, I did. I would, because I would hate, I hate washing socks. I hate pairing them. Oh, God, I hate them. I hate it so much. and then, and then we had so many, and there were so many different kinds Jeremy said, he was like, "You've got, we've got to get rid of these." I was like, "Okay, fine. We're, we're just gonna start over." So I went out and I bought like 50 new pair of white socks, and did not understand the concept at the time that like places like Ollie's these like very high discount, places, that it was a quality of you wash it once and then it disintegrates. I didn't understand that that existed. and so then I had to go buy more again. But no, I don't do that anymore. But you know, speaking of the socks, one thing that we did that, you know, I, I want it to be pretty, but it has to function, right? We've talked about that. What Jeremy did was he got a little box and he calls it the sock graveyard, and every time we have a sock that's mismatched, it just goes in there, and then when we do it, then it's, it's easy to find. So it just kind of tucks away. It's always there. We know

Dwayne

Mm-hmm.

Jeremy

a lot. Yeah,

Dwayne

Yeah, that's a smart idea, it does happen. I don't know where the socks go, but that does happen.

Stuart

I don't either.

Jeremy

either. I, I, I just do not understand it, how, how that happens. But I'm really bad at putting stuff in the washer, and I don't hear the, the little music that it plays when it goes off. I mean, I know I'm getting old. Listen, my dad was in a country band when I was little. I played around them practicing at night. I was in marching band, I was in drum corps. I then taught band for a long time. I have been around a lot of loud shit my entire life, and my hearing sucks. I know this. and there's just certain things I can't hear anymore, and that's one of them. Now, Jeremy says it's selective hearing. It is not. I can't, I can't hear it.

Dwayne

If we're in the back of the house, and it goes off, Jeremy's like "you better go do that" and I'm like "do what"

Jeremy

I'm cl-clueless." Um, the other thing that we have, which, uh, I don't remember where we picked it up along the way in our laundry room that made a big difference, was because I was notorious at like keeping stuff Or having stuff in there, and I didn't wear it for a very long time. And then I knew I needed to donate it. Well, then I would just leave it there. I would just still hang it up until I went to go donate stuff. Well, now we have a donate now bin. So anytime there's something like a little... whether it's a little box or whether you have like a little hamper

Stuart

or something, it doesn't have to be big because hopefully you aren't donating lots of stuff all of the time.

Jeremy

Anytime you pick up something, you're like, "Oh God, I need to get rid of that," you can put it in there, and then it's all put together by the time you decide that you

Stuart

need to drop it off and donate it.

Jeremy

And do

Stuart

I actually have one of those in, in our laundry room because, you know,

Jeremy

room.

Stuart

Ally is growing a lot and, you know, she'll wear something and I'll wash it and I'll pull it out of the dryer. I'm like, "Hmm, well that's not gonna fit anymore." So I just throw it in the thing, you know? I've also learned that children's clothes shrink

Jeremy

know,

Stuart

incredibly fast.

Jeremy

Hmmm and i don't know if that's

Stuart

don't know if s- if that's by design because they know you're just gonna buy more in two months anyway.

Jeremy

Yeah, I bet that has something to do with it.

Stuart

I mean, literally I could buy her a T-shirt,

Jeremy

and

Stuart

she could wear it twice. I wash it the second time, I pull it out and it looks like, you know, a toddler should be in it. I'm like, "Hmm."

Jeremy

Well, you know, this

Dwayne

Probably a fit you.

Jeremy

you. know, this is also one of the issues with

Stuart

fast fashion right, so the fabrics are

Jeremy

aren't as nice, so they don't launder as well. But when it comes to a kid,

Stuart

Yeah.

Jeremy

ultimately, I guess it matters because like you said, she's growing so damn much.

Stuart

Okay.

Dwayne

Now I'll speak of,

Stuart

I

Dwayne

the basement of my house and they moved into it, and they

Jeremy

and they

Dwayne

So the, the basement already had a laundry room for them and had a, an older set of washer and dryer, but

Jeremy

but

Dwayne

not too old. I mean, really pretty good. But it's mismatched. One was a GE, one was a Maytag, another story, but

Jeremy

but

Dwayne

really basically brand new, right? Well, then she had a really nice set that

Jeremy

that

Dwayne

she brought back from the house they lived in all the time.

Jeremy

time.

Dwayne

So I got that switched out, last week for the, the okay set to the really good set. Well, how do you get rid of a washer and dryer? Well, the only avenue that I initially had

Jeremy

had

Dwayne

was to put it on Facebook Marketplace. And I will just say, for any of us that have ever dealt with that, not all, I don't want to be a, a swipe,

Jeremy

but many

Dwayne

but many of the people that buy things on Facebook Marketplace, my

Jeremy

my path.

Dwayne

So far, uh, there's something wrong with these people.

Jeremy

know.

Dwayne

So it is a relatively

Jeremy

that's not

Dwayne

n-new Maytag dryer. I mean,

Jeremy

the warnings

Dwayne

almost brand new Maytag, and the other GE is pretty darn new, pristine, $400 for the set. Okay?

Jeremy

is fair. Okay?

Dwayne

Set,

Stuart

if you don't got one, that's a great deal.

Jeremy

a great

Dwayne

It's a gr- it is a great... I'm just telling, I'm not

Stuart

Or if you have, you know, college kids moving to an apartment, that's an even better deal.

Dwayne

Set, set, pristine. How much is the washer? I bet I've responded five times, "How much is..." You know, it says set. I don't understand what you don't understand what set is, right? Video, pictures, set. so last night the set was $400. So somebody sent me a message at

Jeremy

eleven

Dwayne

last night, by the way, and, uh, I responded how-- And he wanted to know how much the washer was.

Stuart

You tell them it's $400 and the dryer's free.

Dwayne

Well, almost did that, but I didn't want to be a jerk.

Stuart

Oh, I would.

Dwayne

that and I sent, I sent $300. I thought, "I'll sell the washer for $300, and I can sell the dryer for 150 and be ahead of the game." If you, if-- Look, if you want to be that, I'll just play the game.

Jeremy

game.

Dwayne

But anyway, these pe- Well, can you take $330? That's not within my budget. No. No, $400. Can you deliver it? No, but I h- No, at, what, that was another request. Can you deliver it? I'm like, "No, but I can give you a delivery person's name and number." Of course, you know what they were, crickets, right?

Jeremy

right? Of

Dwayne

I'm like--

Stuart

Right.

Dwayne

I'd rather burn it than let them have it.

Jeremy

burn it. I got, I got a little funny side about, um, and God, this is gonna sound so judgmental, but I was at a client's house. We

Stuart

Mm.

Jeremy

renovating their kitchen, uh, they had taken all of their existing cabinetry, and w- They were gonna put it on Facebook

Stuart

Mm-hmm.

Jeremy

all. And while I was there, the people came to pick it up. And were someone who really needed it,

Dwayne

Mm-hmm.

Jeremy

needed clothing on their child and shoes. Um, yeah, it's a different breed of people. And, uh, like I don't want it to sound jud- I don't want to sound judgmental because I, I, I,

Dwayne

No, no. Let, let's stop there. Stop right there.

Jeremy

Oh, Lord." I was like, "Okay, Lord." I was like, "Here, honey, can I put it in your..." And of course, they pic- they came in like a Miata

Dwayne

S-

Jeremy

pick it up. What the hell are you gonna do

Dwayne

yeah,

Jeremy

cabinetry in a Miata?

Dwayne

yeah. Stop right there. There was-- I ha- because of downsizing and stuff, there was a Broyhill, which is a, just an okay brand dresser, and it was, again,

Jeremy

know, pristine,

Dwayne

you know, it's Broyhill. I'm like...

Jeremy

forty years

Dwayne

So I put it on Facebook Marketplace last year, and I think it was, 100 bucks. I don't know what it was. N-not, not a lot for what it was. And this gentleman, um, responded pretty quickly,

Jeremy

bought it,

Dwayne

it, came with his

Jeremy

twelve-year-old

Dwayne

and I helped him. A very nice man, the total opposite of

Jeremy

of

Dwayne

what I'm dealing with this washer and dryer. I mean, just appreciative and kind and responsive and

Jeremy

and just normal,

Dwayne

right? And he started explaining how appreciative he was

Jeremy

that

Dwayne

was an elderly lady that he went to church with and, um, that

Jeremy

basically

Dwayne

she was abandoned, and she was fragile, and that he was moving, uh, her into his house with his two other, his wife and two other children, so she could convalesce for a while,

Stuart

Uh-oh.

Dwayne

extra storage for her clothing, right? So you hear all that, the goodness that's involved with that. And I thought about it. I said, "Well, that's pretty, that's a pretty amazing story." So days later, this tells you how bad I am with stuff,

Jeremy

stuff, he

Dwayne

out to me. He said, "By the way," uh, 'cause at that point I, I, I knew he's normal, and I exchanged my cell number with him,

Jeremy

him,

Dwayne

and, um, he sent me a picture. I had left Chloe's graduation diploma the dresser. And I'm like, "Uh-oh, oops. Uh-oh, oops." And he gave me-- And he lives in a nice area. And,

Jeremy

he said, "I have it if you ever do," you know, And, I said, "Yeah." And, uh,

Dwayne

anyway, I went to get it, and I met his wife, and she's just lovely and just the sweetest people, right? after I left, and this is where I'm gonna score a point, I looked at it, and I,

Jeremy

I, I, I

Dwayne

refunded his money. He paid me through Venmo, and I refunded his money back.

Jeremy

That's

Dwayne

Right?

Jeremy

Yeah,

Dwayne

Well

Jeremy

Paying it forward.

Dwayne

Pay it forward. Like, 'cause I saw, I saw in real time what this person was doing, and it was a nice house, but not a huge house, and the kids, and bringing somebody in. It's like, if anybody needs to get something back, this is this man doing something good.

Jeremy

good. So

Dwayne

uh, I don't wanna beat up on the Facebook 'cause right now they're driving me crazy with this washer and dryer. But, you know, there's also good... There's, there's, right, there's good people out there. There's also good p- Well, I worry about, you know, you have pe- somebody come to your house, I'm like, "Oh my God, are they gonna come to your house and k- uh, mm, kill

Stuart

Right.

Dwayne

you know, stab you?" And all that kind of crazy stuff, 'cause there's some crazies out there too. But there's, there's good

Stuart

Wha-

Jeremy

I had somebody tell me once, "You just act crazier than they are and they won't, they won't bother you."

Dwayne

Well, True story. I had some scrap metal. I'm doing everything in my house, so I had scrap metal free to pick up, and the people that came were, you know, they had less than, right?

Jeremy

right?

Dwayne

But, you know, a little bit of the special spectrum

Stuart

Oh, God.

Dwayne

they were

Jeremy

were

Dwayne

getting it because they needed the money to

Jeremy

to

Dwayne

get their phone turned back on, which is a sad story. And, um, she keeps now messaging me on Messenger from Facebook if I have more scrap metal to give her.

Jeremy

basically to buy more scrap metal

Dwayne

I'm like, I just had this one batch. I don't know what to tell you."

Jeremy

the gateway to the metal.

Dwayne

and I, I... Now, oh, the o- the point of that one, yeah, I am the gateway. Uh, they want their phone back on, bless their hearts. But the other thing that said something, because I kind of read the room and I thought, "Ooh, I don't know if I really trust these people being here." I mean, they didn't seem seedy, but it was off, right?

Jeremy

something,

Dwayne

said something, and I just, I pulled my hillbilly card out and I was like, "Yeah, yeah." I said, "You know, I'm moving, doing all this." And I said, "Because, you know, we're getting ready to do some things." And I said, "You know, if I have somebody here, I'll just get that gun out and I'll shoot their ass off," right? And I was like, "I'm plant-" And I do have a gun, and I probably would shoot you. I've really... I'm crazy

Stuart

Wha-

Dwayne

right?

Jeremy

And I said, "You know

Dwayne

Right? But I planted that seed of, "Don't come back," right? I

Jeremy

full gym in the

Stuart

W-well, we got our,

Dwayne

I really did.

Stuart

we got our washer and dryer when we were moving the first time off of a client because he hated the way the buzzer sounded, and he was getting a new one. And he had just bought it, stacking washer and dryer, brand new.

Jeremy

are

Stuart

I was like,

Jeremy

like,

Stuart

Well, does it work?" He goes, "Yeah, it heats, it washes, it does all the things it's supposed to do." He goes, "I just hate the buzzer."

Jeremy

what

Stuart

took it home and started using it. Now listen,

Jeremy

I

Stuart

it sounds like a dead crane drowning in the pond, but you know when that dryer's done.

Jeremy

hahahaha

Dwayne

I love

Stuart

my God. Yeah.

Jeremy

I

Stuart

Is that

Jeremy

instead

Stuart

do? Yeah,

Dwayne

one.

Jeremy

that I have. Yeah, the

Stuart

the little friendly one.

Dwayne

Yeah. Yeah.

Stuart

Oh, it does this like, "Rah, ah, urr." It's like, "Oh,

Dwayne

We're ready.

Jeremy

Well,

Dwayne

Okay.

Jeremy

I

Dwayne

Have we learned anything?

Jeremy

hope they have, you know, laundry rooms. Treat them like every other room in the house. If you put you some fun wallpaper, change out the lighting, make sure that it's functional. Oh, and put, get the... You know what?
