Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Of all the places in the house that we so often overlook adding a little interest and a little charm, for some reason, it's always the laundry room. And for a room being so integral to how the house has to work, we do a disservice to ourself adding the special little details and the things that make it feel nice, 'cause listen, if it's gonna make me feel any better trying to fold some laundry or match some socks, I need every bit of help I can get. Am I alone in that? I hope not. Well, that's exactly what we're talking about. So, the perfect time to listen to this is when you're doing some laundry. Throw it on, and then you can curse along with us as you're pairing the socks. Let's get to it

JeremyDwayne,
DwayneYes.
Jeremythat came
Stuartthe
DwayneSadly, I
Stuartperson that came up with today's topic. Oh. Oh my God. We talked about this when you left. Laundry room. Laundry room. Yeah, laundry room. Why did you want to speak about the laundry room?
Jeremyroom? interested.
DwayneUm,
JeremyCause I
Dwayneit's
StuartI think, well, well, I think it's always overlooked or
Dwayneoverused, and if
Stuartand people don't put any effort into it.
Dwayneand or any
StuartYou know, they thought into, "Oh, it's just a laundry room." It's like, well,
Dwayneyou know
Stuartyou know what?
Jeremyit
Dwayneit, it takes a
Stuartit, it takes a lot of action. So why don't we think about it and really get it right?
DwayneAnd those who
StuartThose who are in the laundry room will love it.
Dwayneit
StuartPlus, it makes it... At the end of the day,
Dwaynealways
StuartI, I always worry about the function and the artwork. So that's it.
JeremyWell, you
StuartWell, you know, it,
JeremyI don't remember if
StuartI don't know if it was the last podcast or the one before that, it was,
Jeremydesigning
Stuartdesign with function in mind, not just the pretty.
Jeremyso I
StuartRight. And so I admitted in our closet that,
Jeremyso
Stuartso for me it's like not pretty, it's functional. So that's, that's exactly the way you
Jeremythe
Stuartdo a laundry room. 'Cause a lau-- Like right after like a kitchen
Jeremyand a
Stuartand a bathroom,
Jeremylike laundry
Stuartlike laundry room, like in my opinion, laundry rooms are above bathrooms. But,
Jeremyum,
Stuartum, and even though you could do the bathroom inside, but you're always gonna have a toilet, you're always gonna have a, a place to shower, and always gonna have a place to wash your hands.
JeremyBut a
StuartBut a laundry room, you
Jeremyit can, it can
Stuartdo things that work.
Jeremyeverybody knows they
Stuartknows they have lived in a house or an apartment or a condo where they went somewhere in their life where they didn't
Jeremydidn't have a
Stuarthave a laundry room, or the laundry room they had was like a little three by five, two by three maybe, like closet-
Jeremyand it was a disaster, and they
Stuartand they wished about it the whole time.
JeremyMm-hmm. Well,
StuartWell, okay. So
Jeremywith with laundry rooms, what kind of tips can we give people?
DwayneWell,
StuartWell,
DwayneI'm doing
StuartI'm doing a, a remodel right now.
Dwayneand it
StuartIt literally is gutting the interior
DwayneAnd, uh, it's an
Stuartit's an older house from
Dwayne1970s, and it
Stuartand it has
Dwaynestorage
Stuartgarage,
JeremyIt has a
Dwaynestorage
Stuarta storage room that's attached to the garage. Like you put
Dwaynerakes
Stuartrakes and shovels in,
JeremyMm-hmm.
Stuartand then it directly backs up to the laundry room. The laundry room
Dwaynebig
Stuartis big enough for a washer
Dwaynea little
Stuartand dryer,
Dwayneright?
Stuarta little counter, taking out
Jeremy"Well, since
Dwaynetaking out fireplaces and moving
Stuartand load of walls
Dwayneand
Stuartthe bathroom.
DwayneI said, "Can I
StuartAnd he said, "Can I take this wall out between
Dwaynethe laundry
Stuartlaundry room and
Dwaynegarage
Stuartthe garage storage,
Dwayneclose up the
Stuartclose up the door in the laundry room,
Dwayneand
Stuartand make it one great big laundry room?"
DwayneAnd the
Stuartthe first answer was,
Dwayne"Oh,
Stuart"Oh, no, we need that room for,
Dwaynestorage
Stuartstorage in the garage." And I was like, "Well, what are you gonna put in it?"
Dwayne"I don't know."
StuartYou know. You know. Right.
Dwaynegonna
StuartThat was the I
DwayneLiterally, that's I don't
Stuartdon't know. Clearly that's I don't know.
DwayneBut, you know,
StuartYou know, anytime you
Dwaynesomebody to
Stuartsomebody to take a closet out or storage, they instantly freeze and lose their minds.
Dwayneyou think
StuartThey think that, you know, I got a place to put my crap.
JeremyWell,
Dwayneso I
Stuartso I started-- I said, "You know, if I can capture your laundry room,
Dwaynethis gives me
Stuartgives me lots of opportunities."
DwayneAnd I said,
StuartAnd I said, "So if I were to look at this as a garage,
Dwayneimagining, I don't know,
Jeremyknow,
Dwayneshovels and rakes
Stuartrakes, and water hoses, and all that kind of stuff, right?" Mm-hmm. She said, "Oh,
Dwayneyeah."
Stuartyeah, yeah, yeah."
Dwayne"So
StuartI said, "So it's an attached two-car garage,
Dwaynebut you
Stuartbut you also
Dwaynea
Stuarta
Jeremydetached
Dwaynetwo-car
Stuarttwo-car garage."
DwayneI said,
StuartI said,
DwayneI
Stuart"Can I not have,
Dwayneuh," what's his name?
StuartSt. Patrick, her husband,
Dwayne"just
Stuartjust put everything in the detached garage and let that be part of your storage building?"
Dwayneshe's like, I guess so."
StuartSo
DwayneIt, it,
Stuartit
Dwaynewas,
Jeremyyou
Stuartyou know,
Jeremyit would
Stuartprobably
Dwaynechange, change aversion to
Stuartentire view of something.
Dwaynethis is
StuartOh, this is how the house is. Even though they're ripping out everything
DwayneI don't wanna
Stuartelse, I don't want to take this one wall down.
DwayneSo,
StuartYou
Dwayneand
Stuartknow? And
Dwayneonce I
Stuartonce I started explaining what to do with it and how to use it,
Dwaynewe're on
Stuartwe're on board, and it's exactly what happened. We took the wall out and made a big room.
Dwayneand now we
StuartNow we have,
Dwaynestations
Stuartin it and a sink. And she said, "I've, I've never had a laundry room sink.
DwayneShe said, "Do I--
StuartDo I--
Dwaynedon't
StuartI don't think I'll use one." I was like, "Well,
Dwaynehow do you...
Stuarthow do you--
Dwayneif
Stuartlike, if you get your shoes dirty, where do you, where do you wash them?"
Dwayneand soak them?" Or,
JeremyOr,
StuartIn the kitchen.
Dwayneugh.
JeremyThat's
StuartThat's why we laughed. Yeah.
DwayneWell,
StuartI remember that
Jeremyremember
Stuartpeople joke.
Jeremyit,
Stuartthere, there is this funny, like, mental barrier. I guess it-- the thought is like if you take two spaces and you take a s- a wall down, you make the house one,
Jeremythat you've
Stuartso you've somehow lost something.
JeremyAnd I
StuartAnd I think that's how-- where we need to change the perception of we're n- actually not losing something, we're actually gaining
Jeremywe didn't
StuartLike, you've got that luxury of
Jeremytaking in some space and
Stuartspace and
Jeremyby all
Stuartcombining it
Jeremydo it, 'cause it, it will
Stuartwith another space and getting real good stuff out of it.
JeremyBut don't be
StuartYou become real good friends. I didn't see it that way, but now that you said it that way, I was like, "Yeah, yeah, it really does once you put it that way." Well, we, we
Jeremyway. Like, yeah. Well,
Stuartkind of panicked a little bit
Jeremyin, out-- when we
Stuartwhen we were taking,
Jeremyfourth
Stuartfloor trenches down
Jeremyon
Stuarton our main floor
Jeremybecause we converted
Stuartpart of that is in a closet and we need to put a washer and dryer in a closet in that room. Does it make any sense that I can-- if I walk you by the bedroom- Mm-hmm that's converting to our closet,
Jeremyand that
Stuartin that bedroom originally had a closet,
Jeremyand
Stuartand in that closet is where we put our washer and dryer.
Jeremythere's a
StuartSo there's a closet in that closet.
JeremyBut, and so we
Stuartand so we were worried, like sadly, sadly, I want to say
Dwayneyou, you're not
Stuartto you, you're not very closet-ish.
JeremyI started-- I was gonna
StuartI was trying to make you- Hmm.
JeremyI'll do it in the closet,"
StuartIt's been a long time since I've been in there. I-
JeremyUm, okay,
Stuartokay, so if you have somebody that doesn't have--
Jeremythey
Stuartif they can't
Jeremysome
Stuarttake
Jeremya wall
Stuarta wall down,
Jeremyare there
Stuartare there things that you would suggest
Jeremyor things
Stuartor things you've done
Jeremythat can- potentially help in any capacity?
DwayneGet your lighting right, because usually it
StuartUsually it has a mood light right in the middle of the room. You can't see- Yeah.
Jeremyget
StuartI know they
Jeremya
Stuarthave the mood lights because,
Jeremymiddle of the room so you can't
StuartThey're cheap.
JeremyWhy
DwayneMm-hmm.
StuartNo, it's just like... It
Jeremylights because, uh, they're
Stuartis. But treat, treat, treat it like any other room in the house right first. Like if you, if you, if you... You know, it's a pretty light thing to do.
Jeremyhappy.
DwayneWell, that's
StuartThat's the part of it is that the laundry room for most people is an afterthought, and that's why we're doing this. Right.
Dwayneit doesn't need to be an afterthought.
StuartIt needs to be thought
Dwayneof because,
Stuartbecause,
Dwayneyou know, you put a
Stuartyou know, you put a whole lot of effort into a,
Dwaynea, a guest bedroom that you don't use
Stuarthopefully very much,
Dwayneyet
Stuartbut yet you're in this laundry room 10 times a day.
JeremyMm-hmm.
DwayneSo
StuartRight.
Dwayneg- get the
StuartGet the lights on. That's an easy, easy thing. You know,
Jeremyfix.
DwayneAnd
Stuartnow
Dwaynemake,
Stuartmake, um,
DwayneLED
StuartLED can lights
Dwaynethey're,
Stuartthat are not necessarily... I'm talking about
Dwayneinstallation, stuff like
Stuartand stuff like that, but just the lights themselves are
Dwayne30 bucks, I
Stuartbucks. I mean,
Dwaynebucks
Stuartthey're 25 bucks or so. Get you a few of those, and it will change your life because as you see what you're...
Dwaynes- Look, I
StuartLook,
JeremyI put on,
DwayneI've dug
StuartI've been honest. I've said that before. We did
Dwayneall
Stuartall three of them.
Dwaynea
StuartHad the booth stay right in the middle of my chest,
Dwaynetells
Stuartthat tells you- I brought the laundry in first. They all...
Jeremyevery
StuartBecause at that moment,
Dwaynewhen he
Stuartit wouldn't deny. It truly didn't change. The brainwashing part, but, uh,
Dwaynelike at least I could
Stuartat least I could see it in the laundry room, right?
Dwaynein our laundry
StuartBecause in our laundry room- Well, you have a nice big window. Yeah.
Jeremya
DwayneI-- There
Stuartgot a window and counters, yeah.
DwayneYeah, it's-- no, I, I, it's,
Stuartyou know,
Jeremya,
StuartI, I... It is a lucky
Dwayneas a
Stuartpart of the deal, but that was a...
DwayneSo the
StuartSo the backstory is when I'm telling you about
Dwaynethe house I'm
Stuartthe house I'm talking about remodeling, it has a storage room that heads to the garage
Dwaynethat we
Stuartthat we took the wall out. Our house plan called for that exactly.
DwayneI
StuartSo I wasn't, I wasn't even being smart.
Dwaynewas just
StuartI was just gonna
Jeremya
Stuartreplay exactly what I did 20 years ago when we built
Dwaynethe house.
Stuarthouse,
DwayneI
Jeremyand
Dwaynelooked at it, and it, we did exactly that same situation. And actually,
Stuartthat's what I was gonna do. It, it actually,
DwayneStuart,
Stuartthere is that,
Dwayneplan
Stuarthouse plan didn't call for a window because the rooms were so small, it, it was chopped up. And again, it goes back to
Dwaynethe,
Jeremythe
Dwaynebecause the,
Stuartthe,
Dwaynethe, the,
Stuartthe interior room, if you speak, was right out the garage door, so-
Dwaynewouldn't have had a window. So
StuartAnd so the exterior room
Dwaynewhat the
Stuartwas what the storage room would have been in the garage. Does that make sense?
DwayneMm-hmm. And
StuartMm-hmm.
Dwaynehave a
Stuartdidn't have a window or something. And we want the window
Dwaynein a
Stuartin a storage room, so we'll pay for it, but it'd be a complete waste of room and raise the price.
Dwaynewhen we
StuartWhen we took the wall down, then we had to have that wall. Obviously, well,
Dwaynea window
Stuartwindow in and then take this right under the window. So it's not only-- It was a purposeful, thoughtful decision
Dwayne20 years
Stuart20 years ago. Oh,
Dwaynenow I
Stuartwell, now I can get light in here. Right. And not only that, but it's also beautiful and pretty. Uh, we have a, an ironing board that's an old school
Dwayneam
Stuartiron board with,
Jeremyleast.
Stuarton the wall. You know, it's just one of those
Dwayne$200 $200
Stuart$200 things that hang on the wall.
DwayneUm,
StuartBut, but it hangs. It's- So it folds down.
Jeremythank
StuartRight. Yes, folds down.
DwayneYeah, yeah, yeah, it's,
StuartIt's
JeremyIt's,
Stuartgot,
Dwaynegot a
Stuartit's got this little cabinet with a glass door on it. It's like a little mini,
Dwayneuh, ironing board, but it's
Stuartboard, but it's more than enough. So,
JeremyAnd, uh, So, uh, he
Dwayneand, uh, anyway, that, you know, we got that.
Stuartthat,
Dwaynec- is
Stuartthat means those are not super expensive, but
Dwaynedid one
StuartI did look for a house a long time ago and
Dwaynewe put it in her,
Stuartput in a
Dwayneher
Jeremya
Dwaynemaster closet and you
Stuartwhere you opened it up
Dwayneit,
Stuartand it, it lit up, and it had a light built into it and all kinds of stuff. So you can get all kinds of versions of those things hanging on the wall. It, it's for my bar owning music playing hillbilly judge. She, she loves her some good...
DwayneShe's an Eastern
Stuarteastern Kentucky hillbilly girl, so she loves the ironing board
JeremyMm-hmm. So the
StuartGod.
Dwayneso in the window, like you said, Stuart,
StuartIt can be a lot. You
Dwaynekey. That,
Stuartthat are just not... But that's where you need to start.
Jeremythings
StuartWell,
Dwayneyou can
Stuartso we can see what you're doing. With windows, this is where I'm going through. And my husband did something very interesting. This, this, this is a problem that
JeremyOur pr-
StuartI have is the clo- uh, closet,
Jeremyuh, laundry room
Stuartlaundry room that's on the front of the house, where I think it's, it's pretty common for a lot of people. And
JeremyI guess,
StuartI get
Jeremythe
Stuartdepressed.
Jeremywe
StuartWell, we are on, like I mentioned we are on a main intersection,
Jeremywe have a
Stuarta very busy, intersection stop in front of our house. So people are always stopping. Uh,
Jeremywell, if
Stuartwell, not-
Jeremyat night, I hate
Stuartyou
Jeremypeople
Stuartpeople being able to look in.
JeremyNow we've
StuartNow we've got these boxes of valances that are in there.
Jeremyand so
Stuartso I'm
JeremyMotorized
Stuartroller shades
Jeremythat will
Stuartthat will be hidden,
Jeremythat will
Stuartthat will just come down at night, because I hate the idea of people looking at me. Right.
JeremyIt doesn't bother me on the other ones 'cause I've all
StuartIt won't bother me on the other wing because I've got regular windows. And they'll look at me.
JeremyI'm like,
StuartIt's funny because I'm like, "I don't want people looking at me folding my Hmm.
JeremyIs that weird? just don't like people looking in like
Dwayneno, well, no,
StuartNo.
Dwaynewell, first, we're not gonna
StuartWe're not gonna guess what you do. You do what you feel comfortable.
DwayneI
StuartBut I would probably guess they would say
Dwaynemost
Stuartmost people are gonna drive by and walk past you pretty fast, and they're not really gonna look at you Looking into your laundry and it's probably just a piece
Dwaynedid care,
Stuartunderwear.
Dwayneyou just hold the
StuartHolding underwear up and just say, "Look at me."
Dwayneat the end
Stuartend of the day, I mean, if you
Dwayneunderwear,
Stuartunderwear out, do you wear it? Right.
Jeremyyou know, the, the, I
StuartI think the reason-
Dwaynethere.
StuartWell-
Dwaynea boxer or a brief,
StuartOh my lord.
DwayneWell, we'll
StuartWhatever.
JeremyI'm not a
StuartI'm not a breezy person.
JeremyI, I'll
StuartI'll wear whatever I want.
JeremyI have
StuartI have no problem. I, I'm not, I'm not, uh, exclusive. But,
Dwaynefor those
Stuartfor those blisters that are,
Dwaynein
Stuartin
Jeremynow.
Stuartyour neighborhood, they
Dwaynethey don't,
Stuartdon't-- They won't opal you now. They just know what you wear, and they don't care. Well, let me tell you why I'm-
Jeremyabout the
Stuartparanoid about the people looking. After we first moved into the house, um,
Jeremywe basically
Stuartspent a little bit of time kind of looking through here, and we didn't have our draperies,
Jeremyup
Stuartup yet.
JeremyAnd
StuartI was
Jeremywatching, Orange Is
StuartOrange Is the New Black.
JeremyAnd, uh, if you don't know about
Stuartif you don't know about the show,
Jeremylike it's,
Stuartit's like
Jeremywomen's
Stuartwomen's prison. There are all these women telling stories, and there's
Jeremysex
Stuartset pieces that are different. And one time I was leaving, and I guess I was trying to go through the garage on my feet
Jeremyhad to
Stuartor heading
Jeremystore.
Stuartaround to
Jeremydon't know
Stuartthe garage door. I, I don't know what I was doing, but I was
Jeremymy
Stuartoutside the house, and I got to the stop sign,
Jeremyjust
Stuartand I just happened to look over, and all I had were titties in my face.
DwayneOh.
Jeremy"Oh my
Stuartmy God.
DwayneAnd
Stuartyou want me to say? I hear this.
Dwaynethat
StuartThat probably doesn't happen much in your life. No.
DwayneNo.
StuartMm-mm.
DwayneOkay. Okay.
JeremyI
StuartRight. So I was looking, and,
Jeremybut
Stuartbut it, it, it terrorized me to the point of, "Oh my God, I have to have these things closed because people are stopped here constantly." Like if they drive by, that's one thing, but we have a four-way stop. Everybody's
Jeremyit's
Stuartstopping. So I'm trying to protect the people in my neighborhood and me.
JeremyThe neighbors. Maybe your TV's
DwayneAnd they
StuartAnd they- Maybe your TV's too big. No, no, no. We don't have a big
JeremyWe don't have, we don't
StuartTV.
JeremyWe are not
DwayneOr the boobs are too big. Maybe. You never
StuartYeah.
Jeremyremember correctly in the, that video, it w- that
StuartLike we gave one away.
Jeremyand we
StuartHe was mentioning that
JeremyBut
DwayneCan you imagine the, the people driving by? Well, look
Stuartwhen people drive by his place, it's so dang- Well, Lord.
Jeremy"I
DwayneMm-hmm.
Jeremywere
StuartThey were just
JeremyWhy are there boobs on their TV?"
StuartLike, "What the heck?" "Are they watching me?" Um, that's what
JeremyI'm gonna do is to
Stuartto do is just build, um...
DwayneOh,
Jeremyif
Stuartif there's... If it's a long house, you kind of figure out you're planning it,
Jeremyis a lot of
Stuarta lot of people love the idea of
Jeremyyou get the
Stuartis get the front door to instead of the
Jeremyto, you know, set them side by
Stuartside-by-side and put a counter on top, i think that's fine and dandy,
JeremyBut
Stuartand maybe. But I will always suggest if you can, to stack them Mm-hmm because the vertical space becomes something so much easier to use for many different things. you're going to use it.
Jeremyin,
StuartYou know, on a daily basis, right?
Jeremylaundry room to begin with, right?
StuartSo if you can stack them that space to be taken up
Jeremywith
Stuartright with the machine, and then you'll think about that space you gain from moving the machine
Jeremymachine
Stuartcan make one machine come from the left at the top or right from the top and come all the way to the other side.
JeremyNow you've
StuartNow you've got a whole big area
Jeremydo
Stuartyou can do dry racks, hanging things,
Jeremyum, extra storage
Stuartstorage Then the folding table,
Jeremybars up
Stuartbars.
Jeremythere's-- It gives you a
Stuartgives you a lot more possibility there that you actually have access to, aside from if you're five foot two and you're trying to
Jeremyreach
Stuartreach above one of these front loaders to try to put something on there. Get a stool.
Jeremyit. Guess what? And
StuartGet a stool.
Jeremythough there's a
StuartIt doesn't get you, that doesn't get you everything up. Yeah.
Jeremya,
Stuartof the
Jeremyone of those like
Stuartthings for a home like this
Jeremybeau-beautiful laundry
Stuartoften, but before it would be for a few things and six foot like I am. Right. You couldn't- It's amazing how much- Well, LG has finally made a washer-dryer stack that all the controls are in the middle. All of them in the middle.
Jeremyare all in one.
Stuartoh very smart?
JeremyCause we
StuartBecause we just got one for Uncle Pete's new house when he renovated and stuff, and I was like, "All the controls are in the middle." So yeah, I had never seen one. Yeah.
DwayneThat's a... See, okay, that's a, that's a
StuartThat's awesome. Yeah. Well, I have to tell you, our washer and dryer are front load and they are
Dwayneby
Stuartside by side.
JeremyMm-hmm.
Dwayneand then
Stuartand then Kathy has this,
Dwaynebecause she
Stuartthis, Kathy has back issues
Dwaynethat, uh, when we
Stuartwhen we remodeled this,
Dwaynethat they
Stuartthat she couldn't go up and down. So she had Ray,
Dwayneuh, our contractor, build, uh, I don't know,
StuartI don't know, six or eight inches
Dwaynebase out of wood, you know, with enough for the,
Stuartplatform for her. And that way I was able to
Dwaynewhat it,
Stuartdo a top
DwayneSo five and a quarter is
Stuartload.
DwayneUh, and raise it
Stuartit raised it up a little bit. So
Dwaynecountertop, and
Stuartup with
Dwayneup, and it's another
Stuartand then it brought us up another countertop.
DwayneAnd when I
StuartAnd when I first looked at it, I was like, "That's gonna be a little tall."
DwayneBut at the end
StuartBut at the end of the day,
Dwayneuh, it did,
Stuartit di- and it's funny, it's almost like for us, it's the ideal height for folding everything
Dwaynebecause we
Stuartof
Dwaynehave two
Stuartus. But that, that...
DwayneAnd
StuartAnd we'll, we'll
Dwayneshow you
Stuartshow you pictures, get pictures up when we talk about it on the podcast. Um,
Dwaynebut for
Stuartbut for ours, that it serves as a place
Dwayneus a place to sit
Stuartto put the laundry basket and the folders. Hmm.
JeremyWell,
StuartHmm.
JeremyLord
StuartLord knows I love a folding
JeremyI'm so
Stuarttable, and I'm so thankful that we have our little,
Jeremyuh,
Stuartisland that's made of that. Again, we did not get a... Unfortunately,
Jeremywent...
Stuartwe went with, we went to Ikea and I did not get like the cheapest
Jeremyone that they
Stuartone that they had. We got one that at the time was a nicer quality of hardwood
Jeremylike actually
Stuartthink it was made out of like real wood versus-
Jeremywas a long time ago. Um,
Stuartanyways, I had to put
Jeremyplank
Stuartplank foam on the back of it because it wasn't finished off, and then
Jeremycalled
Stuartthe stone guy and
Jeremyhad a
Stuartpiece of stone cut for the top. So we have a real nice island. The stone cost more than the piece of furniture
Jeremydid.
DwayneWell, that's a high
Stuarta high low.. Ok, I'm going to tell you what we spent
Dwayneon our
Stuarton our laundry room, but i'm going to say help
Dwayneme remember to talk about Robin and her laundry room
StuartSo,
Dwaynelaundry room. Okay. So
Jeremyso
Dwayneour,
Stuartlaundry room, and again I'll show pictures is
Dwaynepretty. It's very
Stuartthere the cabinetry,
Dwaynecame
Stuartfrom Lowes!. It's just low.
JeremyStock
Stuartoak cabinetry if you have any reference at all. It's not fancy. And,
Dwaynewe painted it up, trimmed it
Stuartand got a good trim carpenter,
DwayneProbably
Stuartprobably put more money on wallpaper
Dwaynethan we did on the cabinets,
Stuartcabinets. Definitely put more money on the countertop than the cabinets.
DwayneBut it's the
StuartBut it's the idea of you don't have to do everything high, high. You know, for example,
Dwaynedon't
Stuartand you don't have to do everything low because that also shows
Jeremyshows up.
Stuartso you can mix it up and So
Dwayneit up
Stuartonce it's all said
Dwaynesaid and
StuartI'm just proud of the fact that the cabinetry looks pretty good And it's just low, modest cabinetry. Un-unpainted, unstained,
Dwaynebasic, off the
Stuarttop shelves with took
Dwaynethe truck
Stuartloaded it up
Dwayneit took it home
Stuartkind of thing, kind of amazing Hmm.
JeremyThing. Hmm. Pretty pretty. Hmm.
DwayneNow, I will
StuartI will say
DwayneRobin
Stuartlaundry room,
Dwayneis
Stuartit's not huge.
DwayneTruthfully spent
Stuarta small
Dwaynefortune
Stuarton it
Dwayneit.
StuartAnd because it's right off her kitchen on the main part of the house and you see it, it's very prominent,
DwayneAnd we had beautiful painted cabinets. We actually did reclaimed h- um,
Stuartum,
Dwaynewood countertops, um, kind of very
StuartKentucky
Dwaynelooking, uh, had
Stuarthad lockers built in.
JeremyBeautiful. Well,
Stuartshe needed it to be a laundry room slash storage for the kids slash bar because she's a nice catholic
Dwayneuh, I was like... I'm like,
StuartLike, i can't get it to be like a backpack and for laundry room and your, your
Dwayneyour alcohol, right? It's not
StuartIt's not, it's not that big a space. And she's like "well, that's what it has to do"
JeremyWell,
DwayneI figured
StuartAnd I figured it out and it turned out beautiful.
DwayneBut the
StuartBut the long story
Jeremyis
DwayneI gave her
StuartI gave it to the
Jeremythat
Dwaynecountertop
Stuartcountertop to fold everything right, like you talked.
DwayneTalked about,
Stuartthe folding station Well, I go there once and she's folding clothese in her dining room
Dwayneright next to it
Stuarthahaha
DwayneAnd I'm like, "Well,
Stuartback
JeremyHow
Dwaynewhy, why..."
Jeremymuch
Dwayneyou know her, right? You know her,
StuartYeah. Yeah. And I'm like, why aren't you folding this in your laundy,
Dwayneroom?"
Jeremywell come here
Stuartand I walked in, and LORD
DwayneWell,
Stuartthat husband of hers had bought
Dwaynehers
Stuarthad bought more bourbon
Dwayneand it
Stuartand it was--
Dwaynethat
Stuartthat folding station had turned into a full raging bar
Dwayneso it's beautiful to look at
Stuartbut anyway. And
DwayneThe
Stuartthe laundry room turns into more of a bar versus a laundry room. I love that. It makes sense. It makes no sense, but i'm telling you it worked. Well, you know, kind of like what you talked about with your
Jeremylaundry room, like with
Stuartroom, like with the wallpaper
Jeremyyou know, all
Stuartand all that treating a true laundry room like it's a regular room in the house
JeremyI
StuartI want to
Jeremysure that
StuartI say this
Jeremywith a little bit
Stuartcaution because laundry room are a great place like a powder room. You have some fun wallpaper or some color.
Jeremycolor. but good God, let's not make it Pee-wee's Playhouse 'cause people can
StuartYeah. It can go from bland to what the fuck real fast Yeah. Yeah.
JeremyYou know what I mean?
StuartI agree. Yeah, I, I think that's something I've mentioned before when you were on here.
Jeremywe were in Nashville on a tour of homes
Stuartand there was this cute,
Jeremylaundry room. It was
Stuarttransfer, and they decided they wanted blue cabinetry and they picked the worst color imaginable
Jeremythey could
Stuartbut even if you tried to look
Jeremypast that
Stuarteven if
Jeremyit had,
Stuartthey fun wallpaper, and then they had found a fun mosaic plaid, uh, tile,
Jeremythat they
Stuartthen they used as a backsplash,
JeremyI
StuartWhich I love the plaid tile It was just using it all in combination was a disaster.
JeremyThen
Stuartthey used some, like, graphically
Jeremyprinted,
Stuartfloor tile in there in
Jeremycasino in Las Vegas. There was
Stuartpattern everywhere.
JeremyAnd you, you know, it
StuartIt looked so garish. But I'm sure whoever did it,
JeremyI think they
Stuartthey had a
Jeremywiener dog,
Stuartbecause there were weiner dogs in
Jeremythe wallpaper.
Stuartit brought them
Jeremyso much happiness
Stuartbut i thought
JeremyLord
Stuartthis is the ugliest damn thing and they spent so much money on it
JeremyIt was Peewee's Dog house, it was awful
StuartOh my God.
DwayneWell, I just finished a laundry room and I
Stuartworried,
Dwaynethat, mm, how to say? She
StuartShe says, "I want,
DwayneI want it
StuartI want navy and hot pink." And I was like, "Oh, gosh", and she's bold
JeremySo,
Dwaynewhat I end up doing, and I
StuartAnd I
Dwaynetime I
Stuartwas oh I hope this turns out and
DwayneIt's not
Stuartit's not a huge laundry room, so what i did was
Dwaynecolor
Stuartdrenched everything and painted absolutely everything navy blue It was scary for,
Dwaynea laundry
Stuartlaundry room. but we put down white hexagon marble floors, um, painted on laundry doors, white countertops.
DwayneBut then the fun
StuartBut the fun punches are that I wallpapered the ceiling,
Dwayneand I
Stuartand I have this white and hot pink lattice.
DwayneAnd
StuartAnd then the window treatment is a floral print that's just the wallpaper that's out in the hall way so it connects the dots.
DwayneThis
Stuartthis was one of those where i
Dwaynewas
StuartI was worried painting something that dark that dark, that what she wanted was navy
Dwaynehot
Stuartand hot pink.
DwayneI
StuartAnd I knew that the
Dwaynebusy wallpaper
Stuartout in the hall was already pre-planned,
DwayneI had to
Stuartso I had to work that into
Jeremyinto
Dwaynea
Stuartin a way But I was worried about that one, but it turned out
DwayneI'm probably a little more conservative than not, and this was a bit strong,
Stuartbeing strong, but she loves it, and it turned out pretty cute, so wallpaper on the ceiling You know, there's a little
Dwaynething to
Stuartbit
Dwaynebecause it's a little bit of
Stuartit
Dwayneand it does a whole lot.
JeremyMm-hmm.
StuartWell, I've been kind of quiet today 'cause I have a headache,
Jeremytoo much money on it and
Stuartand
JeremyAnd,
Stuartso
Jeremyyou know. You say that, but you have a beautiful closet. It's
StuartIt's a foreign thing to me. No. No.
DwayneNow, wait a minute. In your
StuartI'm playing.
Dwaynearen't you doing a big fancy laundry room, and we had a controversy about a countertop?
StuartNo.
Dwaynemaybe? Nope. Nope. Okay.
Stuartyes. Yeah, flooring because I have a pink and tan and speckled terrazzo floor.
Jeremyfloor.
StuartThat was a debate.
DwayneYeah.
Stuartactually, no, um, the laundry room itself currently and in the new one
Jeremyone is
Stuartlarge at all. But we have a stack, and then we have a pantry unit next to it, and then we have enough for a folding counter next to it.
Jeremyto
StuartBut truly, laundry in our house is every day.
Jeremyday.
Stuartday.
JeremyMm-hmm.
StuartOne, because, my Jeremy's very OCD about laundry, and if there is something in the laundry hamper at 5:15 when he gets home, the washer's going at 5:16.
JeremyHmm.
StuartLike, literally every day. So we efficiently use that space a whole lot. But what we don't have in the current house, which we are blowing out in the new house, is a mudroom, which is actually separate from our laundry room because that's where shoes and backpacks and extra refrigerator and dog crates and all of those things are gonna go. And it's, oh, it's probably 400 square feet
Jeremyfeet of nothing, you
Stuarta mudroom, you know. But that's what we use more than a laundry room because
JeremyCause
Stuartlaundry, it's... You might do two loads in a day, but it's, it's done, it's folded, it's put away. It's-- Nothing's there. So
Jeremyfancy. So yeah. I've got laundry that's in the washer today that w- I put in two nights ago and washed it. I haven't gotten it out yet to put it in the dryer.
StuartOh my God.
JeremyI've got to
DwayneWell,
JeremyI come in. actually, I'm not gonna. I have to rewash it. I have to rewash it,
DwayneYeah, I'm
StuartYeah. I was gonna say, rinse that again. You're a person--
Dwaynethe person... Are you
StuartAre
Dwaynes- you used to b-
Stuartyou--
Dwaynesocks
Stuarthave to keep buying socks because you weren't doing the laundry room. Yeah. Are you still doing that
Jeremyokay, so first, uh, there's
Stuartfew things on the planet that i love more?
JeremyThan a new pair of socks. Oh, God, they just, they're so good. I read once that Justin Timberlake, this was early on, once they hit it big, that was one thing that he never washed. He always bought, he wore new socks every day he liked it. And I'm like, "Oh, I connect with the rich and famous. I get this. I understand this. I want that."
StuartBut how wasteful, right. How wasteful.,
JeremyUm, no, I did. I would, because I would hate, I hate washing socks. I hate pairing them. Oh, God, I hate them. I hate it so much. and then, and then we had so many, and there were so many different kinds Jeremy said, he was like, "You've got, we've got to get rid of these." I was like, "Okay, fine. We're, we're just gonna start over." So I went out and I bought like 50 new pair of white socks, and did not understand the concept at the time that like places like Ollie's these like very high discount, places, that it was a quality of you wash it once and then it disintegrates. I didn't understand that that existed. and so then I had to go buy more again. But no, I don't do that anymore. But you know, speaking of the socks, one thing that we did that, you know, I, I want it to be pretty, but it has to function, right? We've talked about that. What Jeremy did was he got a little box and he calls it the sock graveyard, and every time we have a sock that's mismatched, it just goes in there, and then when we do it, then it's, it's easy to find. So it just kind of tucks away. It's always there. We know
DwayneMm-hmm.
Jeremya lot. Yeah,
DwayneYeah, that's a smart idea, it does happen. I don't know where the socks go, but that does happen.
StuartI don't either.
Jeremyeither. I, I, I just do not understand it, how, how that happens. But I'm really bad at putting stuff in the washer, and I don't hear the, the little music that it plays when it goes off. I mean, I know I'm getting old. Listen, my dad was in a country band when I was little. I played around them practicing at night. I was in marching band, I was in drum corps. I then taught band for a long time. I have been around a lot of loud shit my entire life, and my hearing sucks. I know this. and there's just certain things I can't hear anymore, and that's one of them. Now, Jeremy says it's selective hearing. It is not. I can't, I can't hear it.
DwayneIf we're in the back of the house, and it goes off, Jeremy's like "you better go do that" and I'm like "do what"
JeremyI'm cl-clueless." Um, the other thing that we have, which, uh, I don't remember where we picked it up along the way in our laundry room that made a big difference, was because I was notorious at like keeping stuff Or having stuff in there, and I didn't wear it for a very long time. And then I knew I needed to donate it. Well, then I would just leave it there. I would just still hang it up until I went to go donate stuff. Well, now we have a donate now bin. So anytime there's something like a little... whether it's a little box or whether you have like a little hamper
Stuartor something, it doesn't have to be big because hopefully you aren't donating lots of stuff all of the time.
JeremyAnytime you pick up something, you're like, "Oh God, I need to get rid of that," you can put it in there, and then it's all put together by the time you decide that you
Stuartneed to drop it off and donate it.
JeremyAnd do
StuartI actually have one of those in, in our laundry room because, you know,
Jeremyroom.
StuartAlly is growing a lot and, you know, she'll wear something and I'll wash it and I'll pull it out of the dryer. I'm like, "Hmm, well that's not gonna fit anymore." So I just throw it in the thing, you know? I've also learned that children's clothes shrink
Jeremyknow,
Stuartincredibly fast.
JeremyHmmm and i don't know if that's
Stuartdon't know if s- if that's by design because they know you're just gonna buy more in two months anyway.
JeremyYeah, I bet that has something to do with it.
StuartI mean, literally I could buy her a T-shirt,
Jeremyand
Stuartshe could wear it twice. I wash it the second time, I pull it out and it looks like, you know, a toddler should be in it. I'm like, "Hmm."
JeremyWell, you know, this
DwayneProbably a fit you.
Jeremyyou. know, this is also one of the issues with
Stuartfast fashion right, so the fabrics are
Jeremyaren't as nice, so they don't launder as well. But when it comes to a kid,
StuartYeah.
Jeremyultimately, I guess it matters because like you said, she's growing so damn much.
StuartOkay.
DwayneNow I'll speak of,
StuartI
Dwaynethe basement of my house and they moved into it, and they
Jeremyand they
DwayneSo the, the basement already had a laundry room for them and had a, an older set of washer and dryer, but
Jeremybut
Dwaynenot too old. I mean, really pretty good. But it's mismatched. One was a GE, one was a Maytag, another story, but
Jeremybut
Dwaynereally basically brand new, right? Well, then she had a really nice set that
Jeremythat
Dwayneshe brought back from the house they lived in all the time.
Jeremytime.
DwayneSo I got that switched out, last week for the, the okay set to the really good set. Well, how do you get rid of a washer and dryer? Well, the only avenue that I initially had
Jeremyhad
Dwaynewas to put it on Facebook Marketplace. And I will just say, for any of us that have ever dealt with that, not all, I don't want to be a, a swipe,
Jeremybut many
Dwaynebut many of the people that buy things on Facebook Marketplace, my
Jeremymy path.
DwayneSo far, uh, there's something wrong with these people.
Jeremyknow.
DwayneSo it is a relatively
Jeremythat's not
Dwaynen-new Maytag dryer. I mean,
Jeremythe warnings
Dwaynealmost brand new Maytag, and the other GE is pretty darn new, pristine, $400 for the set. Okay?
Jeremyis fair. Okay?
DwayneSet,
Stuartif you don't got one, that's a great deal.
Jeremya great
DwayneIt's a gr- it is a great... I'm just telling, I'm not
StuartOr if you have, you know, college kids moving to an apartment, that's an even better deal.
DwayneSet, set, pristine. How much is the washer? I bet I've responded five times, "How much is..." You know, it says set. I don't understand what you don't understand what set is, right? Video, pictures, set. so last night the set was $400. So somebody sent me a message at
Jeremyeleven
Dwaynelast night, by the way, and, uh, I responded how-- And he wanted to know how much the washer was.
StuartYou tell them it's $400 and the dryer's free.
DwayneWell, almost did that, but I didn't want to be a jerk.
StuartOh, I would.
Dwaynethat and I sent, I sent $300. I thought, "I'll sell the washer for $300, and I can sell the dryer for 150 and be ahead of the game." If you, if-- Look, if you want to be that, I'll just play the game.
Jeremygame.
DwayneBut anyway, these pe- Well, can you take $330? That's not within my budget. No. No, $400. Can you deliver it? No, but I h- No, at, what, that was another request. Can you deliver it? I'm like, "No, but I can give you a delivery person's name and number." Of course, you know what they were, crickets, right?
Jeremyright? Of
DwayneI'm like--
StuartRight.
DwayneI'd rather burn it than let them have it.
Jeremyburn it. I got, I got a little funny side about, um, and God, this is gonna sound so judgmental, but I was at a client's house. We
StuartMm.
Jeremyrenovating their kitchen, uh, they had taken all of their existing cabinetry, and w- They were gonna put it on Facebook
StuartMm-hmm.
Jeremyall. And while I was there, the people came to pick it up. And were someone who really needed it,
DwayneMm-hmm.
Jeremyneeded clothing on their child and shoes. Um, yeah, it's a different breed of people. And, uh, like I don't want it to sound jud- I don't want to sound judgmental because I, I, I,
DwayneNo, no. Let, let's stop there. Stop right there.
JeremyOh, Lord." I was like, "Okay, Lord." I was like, "Here, honey, can I put it in your..." And of course, they pic- they came in like a Miata
DwayneS-
Jeremypick it up. What the hell are you gonna do
Dwayneyeah,
Jeremycabinetry in a Miata?
Dwayneyeah. Stop right there. There was-- I ha- because of downsizing and stuff, there was a Broyhill, which is a, just an okay brand dresser, and it was, again,
Jeremyknow, pristine,
Dwayneyou know, it's Broyhill. I'm like...
Jeremyforty years
DwayneSo I put it on Facebook Marketplace last year, and I think it was, 100 bucks. I don't know what it was. N-not, not a lot for what it was. And this gentleman, um, responded pretty quickly,
Jeremybought it,
Dwayneit, came with his
Jeremytwelve-year-old
Dwayneand I helped him. A very nice man, the total opposite of
Jeremyof
Dwaynewhat I'm dealing with this washer and dryer. I mean, just appreciative and kind and responsive and
Jeremyand just normal,
Dwayneright? And he started explaining how appreciative he was
Jeremythat
Dwaynewas an elderly lady that he went to church with and, um, that
Jeremybasically
Dwayneshe was abandoned, and she was fragile, and that he was moving, uh, her into his house with his two other, his wife and two other children, so she could convalesce for a while,
StuartUh-oh.
Dwayneextra storage for her clothing, right? So you hear all that, the goodness that's involved with that. And I thought about it. I said, "Well, that's pretty, that's a pretty amazing story." So days later, this tells you how bad I am with stuff,
Jeremystuff, he
Dwayneout to me. He said, "By the way," uh, 'cause at that point I, I, I knew he's normal, and I exchanged my cell number with him,
Jeremyhim,
Dwayneand, um, he sent me a picture. I had left Chloe's graduation diploma the dresser. And I'm like, "Uh-oh, oops. Uh-oh, oops." And he gave me-- And he lives in a nice area. And,
Jeremyhe said, "I have it if you ever do," you know, And, I said, "Yeah." And, uh,
Dwayneanyway, I went to get it, and I met his wife, and she's just lovely and just the sweetest people, right? after I left, and this is where I'm gonna score a point, I looked at it, and I,
JeremyI, I, I
Dwaynerefunded his money. He paid me through Venmo, and I refunded his money back.
JeremyThat's
DwayneRight?
JeremyYeah,
DwayneWell
JeremyPaying it forward.
DwaynePay it forward. Like, 'cause I saw, I saw in real time what this person was doing, and it was a nice house, but not a huge house, and the kids, and bringing somebody in. It's like, if anybody needs to get something back, this is this man doing something good.
Jeremygood. So
Dwayneuh, I don't wanna beat up on the Facebook 'cause right now they're driving me crazy with this washer and dryer. But, you know, there's also good... There's, there's, right, there's good people out there. There's also good p- Well, I worry about, you know, you have pe- somebody come to your house, I'm like, "Oh my God, are they gonna come to your house and k- uh, mm, kill
StuartRight.
Dwayneyou know, stab you?" And all that kind of crazy stuff, 'cause there's some crazies out there too. But there's, there's good
StuartWha-
JeremyI had somebody tell me once, "You just act crazier than they are and they won't, they won't bother you."
DwayneWell, True story. I had some scrap metal. I'm doing everything in my house, so I had scrap metal free to pick up, and the people that came were, you know, they had less than, right?
Jeremyright?
DwayneBut, you know, a little bit of the special spectrum
StuartOh, God.
Dwaynethey were
Jeremywere
Dwaynegetting it because they needed the money to
Jeremyto
Dwayneget their phone turned back on, which is a sad story. And, um, she keeps now messaging me on Messenger from Facebook if I have more scrap metal to give her.
Jeremybasically to buy more scrap metal
DwayneI'm like, I just had this one batch. I don't know what to tell you."
Jeremythe gateway to the metal.
Dwayneand I, I... Now, oh, the o- the point of that one, yeah, I am the gateway. Uh, they want their phone back on, bless their hearts. But the other thing that said something, because I kind of read the room and I thought, "Ooh, I don't know if I really trust these people being here." I mean, they didn't seem seedy, but it was off, right?
Jeremysomething,
Dwaynesaid something, and I just, I pulled my hillbilly card out and I was like, "Yeah, yeah." I said, "You know, I'm moving, doing all this." And I said, "Because, you know, we're getting ready to do some things." And I said, "You know, if I have somebody here, I'll just get that gun out and I'll shoot their ass off," right? And I was like, "I'm plant-" And I do have a gun, and I probably would shoot you. I've really... I'm crazy
StuartWha-
Dwayneright?
JeremyAnd I said, "You know
DwayneRight? But I planted that seed of, "Don't come back," right? I
Jeremyfull gym in the
StuartW-well, we got our,
DwayneI really did.
Stuartwe got our washer and dryer when we were moving the first time off of a client because he hated the way the buzzer sounded, and he was getting a new one. And he had just bought it, stacking washer and dryer, brand new.
Jeremyare
StuartI was like,
Jeremylike,
StuartWell, does it work?" He goes, "Yeah, it heats, it washes, it does all the things it's supposed to do." He goes, "I just hate the buzzer."
Jeremywhat
Stuarttook it home and started using it. Now listen,
JeremyI
Stuartit sounds like a dead crane drowning in the pond, but you know when that dryer's done.
Jeremyhahahaha
DwayneI love
Stuartmy God. Yeah.
JeremyI
StuartIs that
Jeremyinstead
Stuartdo? Yeah,
Dwayneone.
Jeremythat I have. Yeah, the
Stuartthe little friendly one.
DwayneYeah. Yeah.
StuartOh, it does this like, "Rah, ah, urr." It's like, "Oh,
DwayneWe're ready.
JeremyWell,
DwayneOkay.
JeremyI
DwayneHave we learned anything?
Jeremyhope they have, you know, laundry rooms. Treat them like every other room in the house. If you put you some fun wallpaper, change out the lighting, make sure that it's functional. Oh, and put, get the... You know what? I, my favorite thing to do Is I wanna make sure that either we have music in there, because if I have music, I'm much more apt to do something. and so get You like a little Alexa or a little Bluetooth speaker and just have your little, like, easy jazz. I got easy jazz running down in the, in the
DwayneIs that right?
Jeremyright. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Trying to calm down Mabel.
Stuartmodel them panties and dance while you're folding towels.
JeremyAnd if you drive by my house, just honk and wave. It's fine. We'll
DwayneYeah, it's how I can wave
Jeremyas always, thanks for listening, and we will see you all again next week. Bye.
StuartBye.
