Sharing a language doesn’t guarantee instant understanding.

Living in the United States, I’ve come across plenty of American expressions that sound perfectly ordinary here — but leave Australians quietly puzzled.

In this episode, I look at a selection of American phrases that don’t immediately translate across the Pacific, and explore what they actually mean in everyday context.

We’ll consider:

• Where these expressions likely came from
 • Why they sound unusual to Australian ears
 • How tone and context shape their meaning
 • And what these differences reveal about cultural history

It’s not about mocking the language.

It’s about how English evolves differently in different places — and how easily meaning shifts when you grow up with another version of it.

If you’ve ever paused mid-conversation and thought, “Wait, what does that mean?”, you’ll recognise a few of these.
