Australia tends to travel well in stereotype form.

Sunburnt surfers. Endless beaches. Vegemite on everything. A country where everyone says “mate” and wrestles crocodiles on the weekend.

In this episode, I take a closer look at some of the most common assumptions about Australians and explore where they come from — and how much truth they actually carry.

We’ll look at:

• The origins of familiar Aussie clichés
 • Which stereotypes have a grain of truth
 • Which ones are outdated or oversimplified
 • And how national identity gets shaped by film, media, and distance

It’s not about rejecting every stereotype outright.

It’s about understanding how they form — and what gets lost when a country is reduced to a handful of symbols.

If you’ve ever had your own culture neatly packaged into a few phrases, you’ll recognise the pattern.
