Most dentists want growth until the criticism starts showing up. More visibility, more patients, and more marketing also bring negative reviews, angry comments, and resistance from people who don’t understand what you’re building.

In this episode, Gary Bird breaks down why backlash is a normal part of scaling a dental practice and how successful owners develop the mindset to handle it. You’ll learn how to deal with hate comments, Google reviews, public criticism, and the emotional pressure that comes with growing a business.

After working with over 1,195 dental practices through SMC, Gary has seen firsthand that the practices growing the fastest are usually the ones willing to handle discomfort, visibility, and criticism better than everyone else.

If you want more new patient growth, stronger dental marketing, and the mindset to scale your practice without folding under pressure, subscribe to Dental Marketing Goat.

And today we're going to talk about taking the good with the bad when you grow. You know, as you grow to different levels, you're going to face different devils. That's just the way that it works. And a lot of times people don't realize that there's negative things that come along with growth and there's positive things as well. And you have to take the good with the bad. And dentists experience this all the time. If you don't see very many patients, mainly your patients are going to say they love you and that you're great. If you start to see a lot of new patients, what's going to happen is they're going to say, some some of them are going to say you're a scam, dentistry's a scam. You just want to steal my money. Even though you just want to help them and you want to help them fix their problem, they're going to say those kind of things. And that's just part of the game of business. And I'm I'm not immune to this. I am not at all. I I recently just got this post uh from a dentist on one of my uh one of my Facebook posts. He said, I honestly hate those self-promoting posts that are disguised as helping and giving advice. Those types of bait customers are always going to end up finding an issue, and the magical marketing company will solve it all just for a small price of tens of thousands of dollars. And when they fail to deliver, they blame the office, not the process. And you know what? And he got 19, 19 people like that and said, Man, they totally agree with that. And I understand that because people have been burnt by marketing companies before. And so that's part of the bad that comes along with marketing a lot and growing a lot and having a lot of clients for me is that I get these dentists that just fly off the handle at me and blame me for all of their problems that they're facing online as an anonymous poster. It's great. It's part, it comes with the business. I don't get mad, I don't want to get even. I just, it's part of business. If people are not hating you, then you're not trying hard enough. It's very simple. If everybody loves you, you're not trying very hard. You have to go and push yourself to grow to the point where people don't like you. Somebody's not gonna like you because you're helping so many people. Then today I just got this message. It says, I got them hooked on your videos and files. I'm seriously considering hiring your team because my team is really enjoying your philosophy. Thank you so much. So I get DMs like that regularly, and I get hate posts, you know, once, twice a week, that I have to like battle with dentists about why I'm ruining dentistry. This is part of growth. And as you grow, you're going to get crazy patience. You're going to get people that say they don't like you. You're going to get people that say you're even a scam artist and a dirtbag and blah, blah, blah, blah. And they're going to leave it on Google review and they're going to post it on social media. And you know what? That's just the price of success. It's part of the game. And as soon as you get to the place where you can uh accept that and you go, hey, this is just the way the game works, you'll be great. You'll do a great job. So always remember that. You got to take the good with the bad. You can't you can't have one without the other. They go together. So hope you have a great day and thanks so much for tuning in.
