Hi and welcome to another edition of Metabolic World Beam with AWS. I'm Martin Gillespie and we've gone to the central part. Well, one of the central parts of uh the UK today we've gone to this wonderful area of leads. And I have said a peer with me today, isn't it a welcome to the show?

Well, thank you, Martin. It's great to have a chat with somebody else in the UK.

It is actually quite an an abnormal amount of people. Um and I have to say in Australia, there are probably so many people doing some great stuff, and it's great to hear an English voice doing some great stuff as well. So to start us off, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and why a little bit about yourself and why you value your health?

SPEAKER_01

Okay, in a nutshell, I went to school in Cardiff because I'm Welsh and I had a Welsh education which was slightly better than the English education in Wales because it does have a bad reputation for health and education. So I really liked science and a sport at school, and then when I went to university, I did biochemistry and genetics as a degree, and after that I did a PhD in molecular mechanisms and biophysics. So it sounds quite complicated, but it was about protein folding, and in simple layman's terms, that relates to things like Alzheimer's, dementia, systemic amyloidosis, and other things. And there I learnt a lot about biochemistry, about DNA. I worked in a lab, I learnt all about light and biology, which we'll talk about later, and also water. I then did a postdoc on statins and hearts and cholesterol, and I became disillusioned because I could tell that uh the hypotheses and the funding was all geared to getting scientists to say that statins were a good thing and misleading the public on cholesterol. So this was in 2008. So I've known for a very long time that there's a lot of misinformation around, which doesn't help public health, and a lot of people are discovering this now. Then after that, I left science and I worked teaching movement, and it was things like Pilates, yoga, somatics, things like that, not CrossFit or body pump or anything like that. I also learned hypnosis and I did that for a long time, and I still do that a bit now, along with something called psychomancy, because the mind is extremely important as well, and we need to look after both as well as our spiritual health and our biochemical health and anything, any other kind of health you want to imagine. I then went back to doing something called quantum biology about six years ago, which was looking at how light, water, and magnetism and things like plasma and bioelectricity affect the body. And this sounds very complicated, but it's not because the theory might be complicated, but actually, how to put quantum biology into practice is very simple. I also spent some time studying functional neurology because that goes very well with movement, and again, the theory is very complicated, but the practical is very easy. So nowadays I make content, I organise retreats. I'm doing one in France this year in autumn, where I break down the complicated science for lay people, but most importantly, show people how to do it, explain to them why they're doing something and why it's important in lots of different ways, because of course, not all people who don't have a degree or are a lay person are ignorant. They often know more than doctors and some scientists these days because they're open-minded. And I make content online, and the aim is to educate people who are interested and show them how to do it, and also always cater for people who do want to take it further, because like with Pilates, or I'm learning a special form of Tai Chi and martial arts at the moment, that no matter what it's there's less, and no matter what, there's more, and anybody can do part of anything for movement, for example, I know exercises people can do in a bed, or all the way up to when I used to coach gymnastics. So there's something for everybody, and then I try to cater for people on different budgets and different levels of education. So that's sort of in a brief nutshell um who I am and what I do.

How do you balance everything? I mean, your super mum, what is it? Your your hashtag ha handle is or is it super mum or wherever?

SPEAKER_01

No, uh a busy superhuman.

Oh, I just made that up about 10 years ago by accident, and I made a logo, and then I just started making content, and then it stuck with the the name. Because you know, you can have you know super grannies and super kids, and it it's all about what I really believe in is that under the right circumstances, uh, when we're so much more than we think we are, and it's about helping people, no matter where they are on their journey, to be able to be a better version of themselves, so not actually changing them into somebody else, because most of the time people have specific problems like uh I'm tired or I can't sleep or I can't lose weight or I'm stressed or I've got a rash or I've got a gut problem or I've got uh depression. So it's you know, and everybody gets those, whether people are wealthy or young or old or or not so wealthy. So yeah, um, and we're all busy in our own way. So, you know, it's just about finding what people can do at their level, and then if people see benefits from it, they'll obviously start to do more of it um of their own accord.

One of the things that you mentioned there cholesterol, do you want to expand a little bit more around some of the myths that we have been hypnotized with?

SPEAKER_01

Well, basically, with cholesterol, it's in every cell in the body and it's in our cell membranes because it's it's kind of a slightly more stiff lipid or fat. And without cholesterol, we die, same as if without insulin and cortisol, we die, two other hormones that can be demonised. And cholesterol makes up about 25% of our brains, which is extremely important nowadays with all of the mental health situations going on. And um, it also we make our sex hormones out of cholesterol, things like testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, and a lot of people uh uh complain about low levels of hormones getting younger and younger even in their 20s. We also make vitamin D out of cholesterol and low vitamin D levels, not vitamin D from supplements, that your own vitamin D that you make yourself, all 15 or more forms, has over and over and over again been linked to numerous different health problems, from problems with the bones, problems with the immune system, cancer, uh, depression, problems with metabolism. And vitamin D is critically important and we make it out of cholesterol. And as anybody who's going through the menopause or been through it or a man with low testosterone, they know how it feels to have their hormone levels tanked. But so that means if we demonize cholesterol, we're also saying, well, these hormones that get made must be bad as well. Uh so that's nonsense. And then when it comes down to the idea of blocking arteries with cholesterol, it isn't actually the correct mechanism at all. Uh, because first of all, cholesterol doesn't just float around in the blood, and this idea of good and bad cholesterol is also incorrect. If you look in a textbook, there's only one kind of cholesterol. So with HDL and LDL, what people are referring to are um molecules in the blood that are that are vesicles that happen to have cholesterol in them, but they also have many other things like lipids and their um a lipoprotein. So just talking about cholesterol isn't really correct anyway. And then when it comes to describing how to deal with heart disease, when people are given statins, the overall cause mortality or how many people lived longer. I think the studies boil down to it gives you five minutes more life. And then cholesterol also is not good for mitochondria, which are the little power plants in our cells. Um, and then also the statins um, like I said, harm the mitochondria, and mitochondria that don't work properly are linked to about 85% of chronic disease. So there's a whole load of misinformation about cholesterol. To add on to that, doctors think the heart's a pump, which even if you sat down with a nine-year-old and went through that, they would see, well, this is not really possible, not just because the heart's too small, just for lots of other reasons. So there's fundamental problems with how hearts are understood, also blood flow and the actual molecules in the blood, because with with the blood, there's it's made of lots of things, and these things all float about and they all need to stay separated away from each other. And this is where something called fourth phase of water is very important. So by just demonising cholesterol, because you can make a drug that makes money and trying to ignore the real biology of a heart and the real biophysics, it it's a way to just make money out of people and deceive them. So that there's a lot of people who run into problems with their hormones, their muscles, their brains from taking statins when overall they don't actually do anything anyway, other than make problems worse. And a lot of people actually develop insulin resistance from taking statins as well.

But there is this aspect or the doctor knows best.

SPEAKER_01

Well, that's fine because um when you do a degree, even like a biochemistry degree, and use textbooks, they're already 50 years out of date. And um doctors in the West uh are very reductionist, and it's um either cut it off using surgery or sew a different piece on or give somebody a drug um to put a plaster on it. Because the medications that we're given, sure I'm not against them because people say a diabetic needs insulin, that's a different situation, but they're not treating the root cause of the problem, they're just dealing with some symptoms, and then all drugs have side effects as all supplements do, and then people need to take more drugs to counteract the side effects. And also when it comes to biochemistry, they only do three months uh in their course, and every single day I learn something new about biochemistry, and I finished my degree in 2000, so they're not updating their knowledge, and also it's not always the doctor's fault, it's um things like the nice guidelines and bureaucracy that um forces them to practice in a certain way. So that's one of the and also um since going to China for three weeks with Professor Liung, that the whole TCM uh medicine, based on five elements, yin yang and their own philosophies, that they don't have these names of diseases like we do, and they have been perfectly uh capable and and efficient at treating disease, so even just the names of diseases in the West that they don't correlate with other cultures which are getting more and more and more advanced. So it doesn't make any sense to me. I'm not saying, you know, oh, don't go to the doctor or the hospital, they are good at certain things, but um I don't see how anybody can know everything. Like I don't, nobody does, so how can a doctor know everything?

So I I take it and I'm I'd love to hear a bit more around your journey towards more what we would call in the West, Eastern medicine. Do you think we've I don't know been quite ignorant of Eastern medicine here in the West?

SPEAKER_01

Not necessarily. Uh we've uh chop sued it because for acupuncture, for example, in the West people use too many needles and they're too small, so that's why the Cochrane study sh gave a bad score for acupuncture. Whereas if you go to China, they do it in a different way. Um I would say that like things like Ayurveda and yoga have come over here. Nobody knows really where yoga came from, but sure there are people that know about Eastern medicine here, um, and then everything's a yin-yang. You know, there's like a east and a west, and for example, 50% of one method will work and 50% of the other will work. But if you integrate both of them, you've got a higher chance of solving whatever problem it is. Um, and then things like tweener massage, that's uh from the east, but we have good massage here, and actually that's one thing pretty much everybody agrees on that it works and does something is massage and touch. Because no matter what we consider, there'll always be somebody who says, oh, chiropractors are rubbish, or osteopathy doesn't work, or it's not just the food, it's not just the movement. But uh with touch, whether it's heavy touch, soft touch, it that always has a beneficial effect on the person, and it's something very, very simple, and you can't patent massaging. So um we do have some of the traditions from from China. I mean, lots of our uh herbology will have originated from TCM because of course there are medicinal herbs in the West, but then when all of the so-called witches got burnt, so so did all the knowledge or lots of the knowledge of our uses of our plants that grow here. So but then we were like dependent on knowledge um that had been protected.

I want to cast another myth with you. You mentioned a little bit of it really well. Vitamin D. Or too much sun will kill you.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, well, the thing is with um the vitamin D that we make, um it's totally different to what you buy that gets made in a factory because all of the timing involved in making that molecule is critical. So it's kind of a large question because first of all, um too much sun isn't gonna kill you because you'll if you're sensible, you'll just come out of it by yourself before you get burnt, and your body isn't gonna overproduce vitamin D. It'll just create another biochemical pathway to say, oh, I've had enough, thank you very much. Whereas with supplements, uh people just take them not really understanding anything about them, even simple things like B vitamins and vitamin D. And because we make the vitamin D in our skin from cholesterol, it then has to get changed into something that's got sulfur on it, which means it can dissolve in blood, and then it's got to go to the kidney and go to the liver, and eventually, many steps later, we it gets made into something called active vitamin D, which is the one that does something. The vitamin D you buy from somewhere uh is the storage form of vitamin D. So it doesn't actually do anything, it has to be activated by a pathway in the body. So when people take a lot of vitamin D orally, that's not how your body's expecting to receive it in a great big lump from a source that's not natural. Yes, we've got foods that have got vitamin D in them, like salmon and egg yolks and mushrooms, but they all saw the sun in some form, like the chicken was outside, or the salmon swam outside, or the mushroom grew outside. So it's a biologically recognizable molecule with some information from the environment embedded in the DNA, sorry, in the vitamin D. Because the important thing about vitamin D is because it's on a timer, if you'll let your body make it itself, it'll put it, distribute it around the body to places like the mitochondria wherever it needs at the right time in the right amount. If you just dump a great big lump of vitamin D in a chemical form in your gut, it's not natural. And then your body's kind of like, well, what do I do with this then? I do appreciate that high dose of vitamin D can have a kind of corticosteroid effect, but if people have got pain and inflammation and they're using vitamin D to get rid of that, that that's not treating the root cause of the inflammation and the pain. It's just the same as using a drug uh and not suit uh dealing with the root cause.

You mentioned another thing you mentioned earlier, which was brilliant. Water. Can you explain a little bit more around why we need water in our body?

SPEAKER_01

Um yeah, first of all, if we think about it, we're about 65% water, so it's already something really important. Then any chemical reaction that happens in biology has to happen through water, so it's like a medium. So I sometimes say to people, it's like throwing um the baby, uh, throwing the bath water out and leaving the baby that you need both together. So it's something that biochemistry doesn't function properly without uh hydration shells or how water is arranged around it. So, first of all, this has to be water that's coherent, which we can just pretend in simple language is like an orchestra that's in tune, like the philharmonic. Uh, and this is uh this ordered water uh makes the reactions that are going to happen more efficient. The second and probably far more important thing about uh water is that it can act as a battery because it can store charge and also it can do something called charge separate inside the body, and this is called fourth-phase water or exclusion zone water. So when it charge separates into positive and negative, now we've got something that can behave like a battery, but also these electrons and protons can move. So we've got charge in motion, so we've got the bioelectronics of our body, and pretty much everyone agrees that we are a bioelectronic organism. We're not just a lump of meat, so it's not only for performing chemical reactions in the body, it also lubricates the body, it lines the uh inside of the vessels. And you brought up cholesterol before, and it's actually when you break down the this particular kind of water, this exclusion zone or fourth-phase water that's like a gel or a crystalline structure, you're breaking down the what's lining and protecting the artery, and then other foreign objects we won't go into it, can then damage the artery, and then it starts to make a scab, which is what blocks the artery. And there happens to be some cholesterol in this scab because we all know there's cholesterol in the blood, it just happened to end up there. So that's why the exclusion zone water is so important, and also it lines the gut, and this exclusion zone can, as I said, acts like a barrier for large molecules, toxins, or just unwanted molecules. And a lot of people complain about leaky gut. So if you don't have enough exclusion zone water in your gut, you're just making the barrier weaker. And the critical thing to understand about this fourth phase water, it gets created and expanded in the presence of light. So that's near infrared light and ultraviolet light. So there's plenty of the near infrared all the time coming from the sun. There's ultraviolet light that gets um that gets to the earth from the sun at given times of the day. So back to your question about the sunlight, we need UVB to make vitamin D. So if we're not outside enough and not grounded enough, then it's going to affect the water in our bodies. And there's other important things we may or may not go into about deuterium and different kinds of oxygen, the inflammatory oxygen that's the singlet oxygen, and then the helpful and useful oxygen, which is the triplet oxygen. And the more people are outside and grounded, the more of the helpful kind of oxygen they're going to make. And again, the singlet oxygen is like a free radical, so it's just something else to add inflammation into the body. And we all know that the more inflammation you've got inside your body, the worse you're going to be. Then our mitochondria actually make water as well. It's called deuterium-depleted water or light water because there's like a yin-yang again here. We've got hydrogen and we've got deuterium, which is a kind of heavy form of hydrogen. Same as I just described to you, we've got two oxygens, the singlet oxygen and the triplet oxygen. And even if this might have sounded complicated to you, I did explain that the best way to make the right kind of oxygen is to go outside and take your shoes off. So anybody can do that. And there are increasing studies on this effect and the benefits for cardiovascular health. And my colleague Stephen Hussey, he had a heart attack when he was 32. Um, and then he is now become an avid follower of uh what we'd call quantum biology, and he's written an excellent book all about cholesterol as well, and I would highly recommend that to any lay person interested in what we're talking about, because I can't possibly do his book justice, but I can give people the basic information and then what to do about it.

So I want to bring up one of the trains people do. First thing in the morning picking up one of these devices mobile devices and spending hours in front of screens. What damage is that doing to one's health?

SPEAKER_01

Well, first of all, if you get up and look at your phone straight away instead of going outside, the the wavelength and frequency of the light that comes out of a phone is telling your brain it's 12 noon in June. And when it comes to timing in the body and body clocks, it's critical for health. So if you're confusing your body as soon as you get up, that's creating stress and confusion, which also is inflammatory if we want to look at it in a biophysics way. Then the phones emit a lot of radiation, like far more people worry about a 5G tower quite near to their house, whereas the phone has got multiple, multiple different kinds of emissions and uh and a receiver, and then you're putting it really close to your heart and your face, and also it's uh the artificial light from screens is not good for eyes, and more and more and more people are wearing glasses earlier and earlier because it damages the retinol, the vitamin A in your eye, and it also depletes something called DHA in your eye, which is a very special kind of omega-3. So we all have to use technology, but it's about having control over it and going outside first and letting your body see natural sunlight to set the clocks. Then, sure, people might have to check their emails or whatever. And then, with if it's social media, no matter what I go on, if I have to post on social media, I'm always going to see something that that pisses me off. Or something, and then also there's always constantly news feed and fear-mongering and this, that, and the other. So it's just about going outside and starting the day in a coherent way because the sun not only makes helps the body make a wide variety of different kinds of hormones. I haven't gone into a lot of them, it also is like a giant conductor that puts us into rhythm. And there's also something called the Schumann resonance, which we can call the heartbeat of the earth. And this was discovered in the 1950s by a professor Schuman, and this is very important for our alpha waves in the brain because it's it's 7.83 hertz, this Schumann resonance, and that's the alpha brain wave state. And a lot of people wake up stressed or uh worrying about everything in the day. So by just going outside, grounding, getting the light, and being in the Schumann resonance is a great way to just start in a more relaxed way, because naturally our cortisol is going to be higher in the morning because we need that to wake us up. But if it goes sky high, because also the artificial light from the phone and the screens is going to push the cortisol up even more and bring your dopamine down a little bit. So it just makes sense to start the day off uh well and then use your phone more safely. Because it's better to use the phone outside and grounded, and there's different kinds of glasses and screens you can get you can get to make the phone less damaging to your eyes.

So, with all this knowledge and you I know about your retreats. What's next for you on your journey?

SPEAKER_01

Um, I'm kind of quite set up on my mission, to be honest. It's just basically keep on keeping on, because anybody who has a mission and knows exactly what they want to do at the end, no matter what, there's always going to be obstacles. So it's all about just keeping on uh carrying on, getting more audience, um, helping people understand uh and not be frightened with all in because everything's unstable at the moment. We all agree. Whenever there's an event like the World Cup, that it's sort of a distraction, and then in a few weeks or months there'll be some kind of change that really upsets people. So it's just about holding steady and not being thrown off my mission. And I'm I'm always keen to learn more, um, but also I have to remember I can't know everything, and it's also get good at what you know and pass it on to other people, and um remember that everybody's in a different place in their journey, and you know, I didn't know anything 20 years ago, and you have to just meet people where they're at, is is what is what I'm about. Uh, and also let me see like a particular mission. I I can't really think of anything other than my my mission, really.

I think one of the key things which has been fantastic in the last few years, you mentioned there about social media, and there's some great things out there in social media, but there's also a lot of misinformation.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah, definitely. That's why I brought up the yin yang and about um understanding um biology and physics at a very um deep but simple level, because when you understand the principles of how the universe works or begin to learn, you can start to see um what's the truth and what's not the truth, and also follow the money is always helpful, or what's the person's motive. Um, and then sure there is misinformation, but there are some things it depends on the context, like whether someone should be vegan or keto. Maybe it depends on the country because it's much easier to be vegan and be healthy in, say, India or somewhere where it's where there's lots of sun or somewhere that's quite near the equator. Whereas in this country, we are surrounded by water, so we've got lots of fish, we've got loads of grass and ruminant animals, and the plants that grow here are very low carb, so it just makes sense, it's common sense sometimes to eat what grows near you rather than listening to people and their cults and their food cults online because it's something that, and also the other important thing is always be your own scientist or do your own tests. That's something I do all the time is test myself, test other people. It's easy to get a CGM, which is a continuous glucose monitor, the blood tests if you know which ones to get are not expensive, and just keep a diary. Uh, and if you start to feel worse, probably what you're doing isn't working, and maybe you shouldn't be following that influence or working with that person. Um, and and I like I've brought up lots of times already, I I went into physics because physics actually controls chemistry and biology. So if you can understand the physics, and it's not difficult. I'm not a physicist, even though I did some at university, it was biophysics. Um, it's something that's not taught properly at school and perceived to be really boring. And fair enough, people don't like equations and maths, but but you you can talk about physics as I as I was talking about singlet oxygen and triplet oxygen and hydrogen and deuterium, that's just physics. There's a heavy hydrogen and a light hydrogen, and if we have too much heavy hydrogen in us, it's going to weigh us down, and if especially if it's in the wrong place. And then things like seed oils have got lots of deuterium in them, processed food, uh, sugar has got more deuterium than say fat. So it's a way, if you know about deuterium, you can think, oh, well, actually, that makes sense. I can quite easily avoid those foods and then focus on the lower deuterium foods. Then sweating helps our body deplete your deuterium. So again, exercising or soreness, that's going to make sense. Cold plunging can also help uh deplete deuterium. And importantly, going outside in and getting plenty of sun is important for managing deuterium because it also dances with something called melanin, which is a really important pigment in our skin that's not just for protecting us against sunlight, it's also a semiconductor and it plays an extremely important in the bioelectronics of the body along with water. So, again, if you understand deuterium, it can open up many more, oh, this is the right pathway, and I should be doing that. And if you sit inside under artificial light all day and non-native EMFs, it's encourages the body to hold on to the deuterium. And I don't want to scare monger people about deuterium because in the right place it plays an important role. It's when it's got into the wrong place, uh, then it is a problem. And the ways to deplete deuterium are pretty much what I've listed. There's a big link between deuterium and cancer, deuterium and diabetes. Uh, when fat cells have too much deuterium in them, they're much more likely to be a white fat cell and multiply. So it it link it ties into many, many problems that people have. And sure, there's more to everything than just deuterium, but it gives people a lens to start to piece together what's true and what's not. There's lots of deuterium in things that get made in factories like uh medications or uh supplements. So if people are just on five medications and 30 supplements, they're taking in a lot of deuterium, so it's telling them maybe that isn't the best way. I'm not against medications and I'm not against targeted supplementing when people understand what they're taking and exactly why, and they're taking the right form. But then also, like anything, it's a supplement, it's to help you in a bad time of your life, and if you can get better at the root cause, then you can come off some of the supplements. And nowadays everything's getting more and more expensive. So, uh, ways to save money is resonates with a lot of people, and then the more people learn about food, the more they can learn. Oh, I can get these nutrients from this food, I can get these nutrients from that food. And as we're in the UK together at the moment, the oysters are back in season here, and they're less than a pound an oyster, and they're highly nutritious with DHA, plenty of minerals, you know, they're like a nutrient bomb. And then, you know, you then you can start to learn and more about food, and then you start to think, oh well, actually, maybe I'll grow my own food, maybe I'll support my farmers' market rather than just buying stuff from places like Tesco's and other supermarkets that treat our farmers very badly. And also, a lot of people, if you actually go to a farm and knock on the door, you you can buy all sorts from certain farms for cheaper and help them out. Same as getting to know your local fishermen. So it just makes us be sociable with food by getting to know people in our community that sell it rather than just going to the supermarket um with a hoodie up and just staring at the phone.

So you mentioned that you do a lot of stuff online. How do people contact you? Because you have a wealth of knowledge.

Um, well, I've got lots of social media. So I've got Instagram and I've got Substack and I've got a YouTube channel, and everything's busy, superhuman. I've got TikTok, which I need to go back to. Then um I I have a coaching group which people can work with me, but at the moment I'm kind of focusing uh on the retreats um in person. I go around and do talks in uh face to face to people as well, uh, if it's the right kind of audience. Because, like I said right at the beginning, I like talking to interested people. People that just want to troll, I'm not really interested. So, you know, that's I'm easy to find online because I've got many channels. I've got um Twitter or X as well, so it's just busy Superhuman or Dr. Sarah Pugh, and then you'll find something. And everybody likes different kinds of content, like some people like reading a blog, some people like watching a video, some people like watching an interview, some people like short form with some pictures. So it's just about catering to different kinds of learners, basically. I've had a masterclass for the last 35 minutes, and I hope that everybody who listens to this You haven't asked the important question that I was saving everything, the GLP ones, because that's what everyone wants to know.

Yeah, well, people can use common sense really, because I I was I prepared the whole history of weight loss drugs from the 1930s. Um, but that's fine, we can save it for another time because I'm I'm gonna write a substack on it. Uh it's kind of prepared almost. So it's because people always ask me questions, and there's always it it depends on the context, but you know, that's fine.
