It's a journey of exploration and discovery. In each episode, I sit down with remarkable individuals from all walks of life. These aren't household names. They're everyday heroes with fascinating tales to share. Drawing from my passion for Appreciative Inquiry, a management methodology focused on amplifying positivity, strengths, and successes.
In fostering meaningful change, we seek to uncover the moments that define us. I unearth stories of joy, kindness, and resilience through overwhelmingly positive questions.
Tell me about a recent accomplishment or success you're particularly proud of.
Can you recall a situation where you overcame a challenge that led to personal growth?
What did you learn from that experience? And what book recommendations do you have?
These are just a few of the questions we explore together. We will delve into the heart of each story, one conversation at a time, but be warned, laughter and tears are both frequent companions on this journey. That's the beauty of authenticity. It knows no bounds.
What sets ABWilson's Heart of the Matter apart is its consistency. In this episode of ABWilson's Heart of the Matter, host Aderonke Bademosi Wilson sits down with Dr. Akasha Saunders, a self-described pilgrim, lover, and ceremonialist, to explore profound themes of sacredness, connection, and personal growth. They delve into Akasha’s unique perspectives on embracing life’s journey through a lens of ceremony and love.
Dr. Saunders shares intimate stories about his transformative experiences with plant medicine, redefining his role as a father, and discovering the importance of self-love and solitude.
Dr. Akasha Saunders dedicates his life to supporting others in their journey of self-discovery and healing. Through his work as a healer, coach, and community builder in Grenada, Akasha brings a unique blend of spirituality, love, and compassion to all his endeavors. He is the founder of Sawabona, a holistic healing center that fosters connection and personal growth.
Akasha explains that life, in its entirety, is a ceremony. He describes how daily activities like eating, meditation, and conversations can be seen as sacred moments that deserve intention and reverence. His realization deepened during a transformative experience with ayahuasca, where he discovered his role as a protector of ceremonies.
Akasha shares his journey towards embodying the energy of a lover, which involves compassion, tenderness, and a genuine regard for others, including nature. He tells a touching story about discovering his love for hugging trees, which allowed him to connect more deeply with life around him.
For Akasha, life itself is a pilgrimage. He talks about his love for movement and being in-between places as a metaphor for exploring different versions of himself. He has completed physical pilgrimages, including a 500-mile trek in Spain, and continues to see his internal journey as one of ongoing self-discovery.
Akasha shares an emotional story about creating a meaningful rite of passage for his son’s 18th birthday. His son, who has cerebral palsy, will embark on a two-mile walk, representing a significant physical and mental challenge. The event is designed to mark his son’s transition into adulthood, emphasizing his independence and strength.
Akasha discusses his experiences with ayahuasca, which he refers to as grandmother medicine, emphasizing its power to facilitate mental, emotional, and spiritual healing. He describes it as a tool for seeing hidden parts of oneself and achieving wholeness.
Akasha also opens up about his ongoing journey to redefine his relationship with his long-time partner. He talks candidly about the difficulties of navigating codependency and the importance of honoring each other's individuality and personal growth.
One of the most impactful themes in this episode is the message of self-love. Akasha explores the idea that the love, depth, and tenderness we seek from others must first be cultivated within ourselves.
