Professor Sebastian Weidt

Sebastian Weidt is the CEO and Co-founder of Universal Quantum and a Professor of Quantum Computing and Entrepreneurship at the University of Sussex. In 2017, Sebastian and his long-time collaborator, Prof. Winfried Hensinger, published the first practical blueprint for a large-scale trapped ion quantum computer—a breakthrough that led to the incorporation of Universal Quantum in 2018. Today, Sebastian leads a world-class engineering team across the UK, Germany, and the USA, moving beyond theory to deliver hardware for major clients like the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). Under his leadership, the company is commercialising 'UQConnect' technology to bridge the gap between lab-scale experiments and useful, million-qubit quantum systems.
