Creating Your Perimenopause Vision Statement
Speaker 1Today we are switching gears a little bit. In previous episodes, there is a lot of education around perimenopause menopause, what's happening to our bodies behind the scenes, and really diving specifically into addressing sleep, nutrition and movement and reframing the narrative around this midlife transition journey. But today I'm taking you on another journey of self-discovery and expansion, and we're going to do an activity that I hope will help you get perspective on what is most important to you how you can continue through your perimenopause journey with yourself in mind. So today we'll be creating your very own vision statement. Yes, you heard that correctly. And no, vision statements are not just for companies. So vision statements is a simple yet powerful way to get really clear on your values and what you want out of your perimenopause journey, no matter what stage of transition you are in. So we're going to think about life. Think about life as it is right now and how you see your future. No matter what age, there's always goals, aspirations and visions. How do you see your health? How do you see yourself, physically, mentally, socially? Last week, I dedicated my 20th episode to things I wished my 20-year-old self knew and what I see for my six-year-old self in the future. This really follows along that same path and diving a little bit deeper, I'm thinking, okay, yes, I'm nearing 40. But when I'm 60, how old is everyone around me going to be? How old are my kids going to be? How old will my husband be? How old will my parents be? And how do I see myself functioning physically, mentally, socially and how do I see my health, how do I want to see my health in that moment of my life? So this is what's going to be guiding your vision statement creation today. So I want you to think about you specifically yourself, where you are now and how you see yourself in the future. Whether it's five months, five years, whatever the case may be. How do you see yourself today, tomorrow and years down the road? What does thriving in midlife and beyond look like for you? This will be your cornerstone. This helps guide you through choices and recommendations and challenges that you'll be facing and how you want to prioritize your decisions in your health and fitness journey.
Speaker 1Menopause is a natural and inevitable part of life for most women. As your coach, I am not here to help you skip over your perimenopause journey or to guarantee that it's going to be easy and uneventful, but, as your coach, I am here to support you through your experience, whatever that may be. If you are listening to this episode right now and you're like I don't even know if I'm in perimenopause yet or I've been through all that, I'm done Like I'm on the other side of menopause. I haven't gotten ant flow in over 12 months.
Speaker 1Regardless of what stage you are in, what you may have already conquered at this level, creating this vision statement is still for you. It's a gut check when facing challenges and choices in your life now and beyond. And the great thing about this vision statement is it's going to set up the foundation for really what your true values are, what you see as valuable in your life and how we make decisions based upon this. And as we age, our perspectives might change a little bit. Our experiences will be changing the direction of different things in our lives, and so this vision statement is kind of fluid. It may change. We can pivot pivot into what connects with us at that moment. So we're going to start with today, where we are now, and what I want you to do is grab a piece of paper and the first thing we're going to do is we're going to determine your values.
Speaker 1So perimenopause is a great time to get introspective, to look inside and get a really clear picture on who you are, who you want to be and what's most important to you at this phase of your life. So think about it. Up until this point, you have been so focused on caring for other people or just keeping up with life that you don't necessarily check in and think about what do you really want, what do you really need? So take a moment to think about things that you value most when it comes to your body, health, fitness. What means the most to you? How do you want to show up in your life, regardless of the outcome? So we're going to get really clear on what your top three values are. So in the show notes, I'm adding in a link so you can download a list. Now, this list of values is not all inclusive, so if there's others that are that are not on here, you can simply add them to the list. But I want you to take a moment to look at these values in this list and we're going to narrow it down ultimately to your top three. So when you look at this list, you're going to pick what truly resonates with you and I want you to put a check next to your top 10.
Utilizing Your Perimenopause Vision Statement
Speaker 1Let me give you an example of what my top 10 core values were Accountability, connection, courage, flexibility, growth, motivation, optimism, resilience, respect and quality over quantity. Now take a look at your top 10 and narrow it down to five. What truly resonates with you? Where do you feel most connected? Circle those top five and then take a look at your top five and narrow it down to three. Highlight those three. These are your core values. When I narrowed mine down, my top three are quality over quantity, accountability and connection. Now, that doesn't mean that the others of your top 10 are completely off the table. It just means that you're really focusing on these top three. Now our next step is to determine what your big rocks are. Big rocks are what might be related to family, friends, service, your career, sleep, health, religion or a whole bunch of other things. These are the things that are worth your prioritizing. Some may be ones that you want to turn your focus to in the future. Once you know your big rocks in life, when combined with your values, then you can create your perimenopause vision statement.
Speaker 1Taking a small break here, there was a YouTube video I had seen a few years ago and I'm going to try and find the link to it. If I can, I'll put it in the show notes. But it was a story of a teacher who brought in a jar to class and he puts things in the jar and he asks is this jar full? I think. First he adds rocks or golf balls and he says is the jar full? They say yes. Then he adds pebbles and sand and then he asks is the jar full? They say yes. And then he adds water and then is the jar full? Yes, it's full. If you put in your fillers before your big rocks, there's no room for big rocks. So focusing on the big rocks is the biggest priority and then you can sprinkle in the other things. So, anyways, that was my reference to that story.
Speaker 1So we're going to do following the same narrowing sequence for your big rocks as the values. So I want you to write down 10 big rocks what are the 10 things that are most important to you right now and for what you see for yourself in the future? Once you've gotten your list of 10 big rocks, I want you to narrow it down to five and circle those five and then from those five you're going to narrow it down to three and highlight those three. Those three are your big rocks. My three big rocks are family, fun and feeling and looking strong. All right now, the final step in this construction building a perimenopause vision statement is actually putting it together. I want you to fill in the blanks in these two statements and you can create your own as well, but these is just a guide. So you're gonna use your values and your big rocks and you're gonna put them together to create this vision statement. Here's example number one In my life, thriving during menopause means surrounding myself with these people, engaging in this activity on a regular basis and achieving this goal.
Speaker 1Fill in those blanks. Or because of my values of blank, blank and blank. Thriving for me means spending this next phase of my life doing blank and blank, with blank and prioritizing blank. When looking at the vision statement that you've constructed, ask yourself these questions Does this statement align with my top three values? Does this statement take my top three big rocks into consideration? Does this statement take my top three big rocks into consideration? Does this statement align with how I want to spend my time and when I close my eyes and envision living according to this statement? Do I feel good? Do I feel energized and joyful and full of light and inspired? Do I feel excited? If you're answering yes to all of these questions, congratulations. You officially completed constructing your very own perimenopause vision statement.
Speaker 1So what do we do now that we have our vision statement? Well, this is going to be your guiding light, your guiding star, your cornerstone for when you're making decisions. We make decisions every day, every day. Do I say yes to this? Do I say no to this? I've been invited this. Do I go to this? My kids want to do this. They want to. I don't know. Spend I don't know bills, spending money, big purchases, anything. Let's take a look at this statement and push your challenge, choice, decision, thought against it. How does it align and use that as a basis to making your decision and really using it as a guide for your own self-care, your self-care, your introspective journey of perimenopause, and how can you create more time, more energy and feel more empowered as you are going through your unique journey of this life stage?
