9. How a Tech Company is Changing the Game for Black Maternal Health with Dr. Lailah Kara Newton, Co-Founder of Aster
It's Black Maternal Health Week! According to a 2021 study put out by the CDC, Black women are 2.6 times more likely to die in childbirth compared to White women. Today's guest, Dr. Lailah Kara-Newton, is doing something major to change the system that got us here.
Dr. Lailah Kara Newton is the Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Aster, a new company with a goal to transform prenatal and postnatal care. After a traumatic birth story that left her feeling unheard and frustrated, Dr. Lailah knew that the system that was meant to care for her, failed her and her baby.
And as a doctor, she knew it was not a personal failing of any of her caretakers. Urgent needs slipped through the cracks because the system is broken. So, she teamed up with her sister to create Aster, a patient management platform designed to stop these situations from happening.
In this episode, we're chatting about:
- Why Dr. Lailah Kara-Newton became a doctor
- Her birth story and the lack of communication that left her with PTSD
- The issues that Aster seeks to solve on the practice level
- How Black women can advocate for themselves in medical settings
What's in Dr. Lailah's bag?
