Your Career Journey

How to take ownership of your career. With Becca Spencer

Emma Graham

I wanted to start 2025 with this episode as Becca has so many examples of how she’s taken ownership and control of her career, from moving to Australia from the UK, from building relationships, being proactive in looking for opportunities for herself and building a personal brand.

It hasn’t all been plain sailing, though, from overcoming challenges like visa constraints, the lack of ‘local experience’ barrier and building a career in a country where you don’t know anyone and don’t have an existing network.

We talk about the importance of genuine connections, leveraging contract roles, and how asking questions and continually learning have all played a role.  Becca gives practical examples of how she has done the things we talk about, how she built her network, who did reach out in the first instance and what did she say?

We also talk about the importance of getting out of your comfort zone and the value of climbing 'Cringe Mountain' and posting on LinkedIn.

If you’d like to make some changes to how you approach your career in 2025, this episode is a fantastic place to start! It’s jam-packed with practical advice on how to take control and achieve greater ownership.
