Bourbon Tasting: Bulleit 7-Year

The B-Team Podcast

A reunion worth toasting! After a 50-day recovery from knee replacement surgery, Russ rejoins Matt and Josh for an episode brimming with bourbon knowledge, friendly banter, and genuine camaraderie.

The team dives straight into a special tasting of the brand new Bulleit Bottled in Bond Bourbon – the first expression fully produced at Bulleit's own Shelbyville, Kentucky distillery rather than sourced from MPG. This seven-year-old, 100-proof bourbon (priced at a reasonable $45-50) pleasantly surprises our hosts with its complex notes of licorice, brown sugar, and balanced spice. Their enthusiastic review challenges the common perception that Bulleit is merely a mixing bourbon, with all three agreeing this expression stands confidently on its own merits.

The episode delivers delightful moments of self-deprecating humor as the hosts discuss their podcast's growing audience and share amusing stories of family reactions – including Russ's granddaughter bluntly informing him he's "not famous." It's these genuine moments, coupled with accessible bourbon education, that make the B-Team Podcast feel less like listening to experts and more like joining friends for a drink.

Have you tried the Bulleit Bottled in Bond 7-Year yet? We'd love to hear your thoughts! Subscribe for more bourbon insights, friendly conversations, and upcoming Kentucky adventure plans.

Speaker 1:

Welcome to the B-Team Podcast. I am your host, josh Saffron, with my co-host, matt Mars and our permanent guest Rob Nelson. We're here every week to talk to you about all things Bentonville, bourbon and business. The B-Team Podcast Be here. Welcome to the B-Team Podcast. I'm your host, josh Safran, with my co-host, matt Morris, and our bourbon kind of served he's already partaking. And where have I been? Where have you been?

Speaker 1:

I've been on sabbatical. I mean this is yeah, I didn't get geriatric rain, you've got crimson, arkansas razorback red or yeah, whatever, but this is closer to dry orange here, by the way. But the knee is good. You've been out on a commission out here. He's been around good Knee replacement was 50 days ago today, you know. So every day is still progress. I'm moving along, I'm driving, I'm off my sabbatical officially on Thursday when I start traveling again for my events Isn't laying in bed miserable.

Speaker 1:

Well, that's why, if I have the second one done, it's not going to be in the wintertime Absolutely the worst time to be laid up when it's icky, gray, damp outside, but the last few days have been great with the sun out. But it's just a process. You've been through it, not like I did, but different. Yep, it's just every step. Did Matt come visit you? As often as he came to visit me when I was Big zero, big zero? Yeah, zero, big zero. But again, that's not off-putting, I just didn't want any visitors. Oh no, I wanted to go visit him, not you, I wanted to go see him, but he was like I'm pretty busy right now. Yeah, I got all those texts and phone calls when I was out as well. It was Groundhog Day, man, it was only Groundhog Day for the first 30 days. I mean, emily and I went to dinner a few times. She came with Terry and I Shout out to Emily Sounds like she's been out to dinner with quite a few people recently.

Speaker 1:

It's good to be back in the saddle, good to be back, good seeing you guys. I haven't seen you since December. It's been a long time. It's not the same without you. Didn't I do a Zoom? We did, we did. You were great. You don't remember anything you said, but you were great. Was I really? I've got to go back to social media. It's already been out there. Yeah, like, was I as bad as you were in Louisville? It was close. Well, we thought it was just the delay, but then we were like no, it's not the delay, there's something else going on there, something else you met the mystery gross, and we've all been there, some of us more recently than others. Yeah, mr Kempton, what are we drinking tonight? So the brand new Bullet. So Bullet, you know.

Speaker 1:

This is out of their new distillery in Shelbyville, kentucky, outside Louisville. This was distilled in spring of 2017. So, for Bottle and Bond, which is a minimum of four years in oak, this is a seven-year 100 proof, their first offering expression out of their distillery. A lot of this had come out of the old MGP, old Sacred Distillery. Before that On the shelves now in the area On the shelves right around $45, $50. So the old old Bola was MGP Until yeah, they started to DI's you, the parent company Bola. They invested, you know, over $100 million in Brandy Distillery. So the distillate that we're getting now is starting to come out of Shelbyville, out of their distillery. And if you look at some of that Bullet Rye, the green label, some of it still comes out of Lawrenceburg, out of the MGP. That's an old Seagram's distillery and the old Bullet Company Seagram's. They had a partnership way back in the day.

Speaker 1:

Well, this, so what do you think? This is really good. Like you know, I think a lot of people look down on Bullitt, but this I mean, I don't know what you think, but it's good. I've used Bullitt before. I don't normally drink it straight, I normally have it. It's good for old fashions. This is a drinker. This is good and it's easy to drink. What's the proof on this? Is it bottle and bond? That's right. I'm testing you today. Thank you. It's very special. That's for you and I. You'll start seeing this out. They'll have other expressions coming out. I've always been.

Speaker 1:

Is this a new release for them? This is a brand new release. This is their bottle of Bond. This is the first to try it. Maybe a lot of the viewers have not seen it yet, but it's out of the shelf. They have $45 to $50. You get a little bit of licorice. You get a little bit of brown sugar. You get the good spice Not allocated, though Easy to find. I got this at Angkor a couple hours ago. Yeah, I got three bottles up there. Again, it's coming out slowly. It's going to be a slow burn, like anything in this region. We're not going to get like the big markets did as far as the release, but it's going to be a slow burn.

Speaker 1:

What would you compare this to? Okay, hayden, heavenhill, their bottle of wine is seven years old. I do like that too. It is interesting. If we'd had time and thought about this, I would have thought about having Heavenhill seven years across comparison here. But it's a good one, it really is. We'll have to do that. So you know, we did the.

Speaker 1:

Did we do the 12-year challenge? Yes, we did. We did the knob 12. That's when you brought in a lot of beans A 10, a 7, and then do a. What is it? Four years, minimum four years. We could do a bottled in bond challenge.

Speaker 1:

The problem for you is You're in for a bottled in bond. The problem for you, matt, I'll bring a brown baguette. You don't have any. You don't have any. You only have the 12, 15, and 18 years and up at your house. Well, I personally like the older stuff, but this is amazing. Let's get it. Add a couple drops of water, guys. Oh yeah, no water. He's been out for a while. Here you go. I'm going to get you guys back in line. No eye droppers? Yeah, we don't have any. Like the wheels fell off Once you were gone, it was just like I'll bring you guys back in a funnel.

Speaker 1:

You've been following me Without that. Yeah, when you weren't here, it was all downhill. It was like On the barbiturates. What do you think? Well, it's really good.

Speaker 1:

So I told my granddaughter it's all on her. I told my granddaughter I've been on podcasts and she goes now, let me find you a line. And she goes oh, you're not famous. That was hysterical. My 11-year-old she went my new podcast. I'm like no, you're not famous at all. I mean, we're up to a couple hundred views a week. Yeah, one of my kiddos said that we had like 407 views on one of our recent ones. That's amazing. Yeah, you guys are starting to move a little. 350 views were me. I did it. That's 30 people. I've told them you have to get on there with 10 times and that's how you do it Three times 10. Yeah, I got to get back on a night watch from January 3rd. It's something. Did you do the full episode or is it just after? It was the Louisville review for a trip and you were something. It was fun. It's after a few weeks back. It's good.

Speaker 1:

We need to get this year's trip on books. Yes, I'm going to stay in Lexington instead of there. So, ted, do it during football weekend. Oh, here we go. No, I mean because I'm getting Lexington, I don't know, but between you and Bobby and Matt I'm not talking to us generally, but I'm you don't want to do the Berman Trail when Kentucky has a home game in Lexington. I saw you were saying you know it's your crazy travel schedule and then adding it into Bobby and Matt. He sucks, he's Texas. Well, you know, we'll figure it out. We'll figure it out, we'll get it on the calendar, but let's do it sooner than later.

Speaker 1:

I'm already booking two trips up there for other events. I thought we were your number one. You already invited us. Come on here. You know who he's bringing. People that came to visit him when he was down in the mountains. Ut plays in October, so I'm taking fraternity brothers up there.

Speaker 1:

We're going to do the Bourbon Trail for two days. Are you driving? I'm asking for a path. Yes, here we go. What I'm going to do. I will get up one morning that will be my commitment to go over to Heaven Hill before we do the Bourbon. I want to get over to Heaven Hill about five in the morning. I will do that.

Speaker 1:

Is that the place the lady recognized you. That's where the Parker's is. Yes, parker's Heaven Hill. Is that where she recognized you? And then you asked her for some help and you're like no, but I'll take a selfie with you. Now they got us the little bong. Yeah, we still have that. I'm saving that for my next funny intro. Yeah, we drank our mine. It was good. It was good, yeah. So what do you think of this? I think Bullitt hit it out of the. Pleasantly surprised, yeah, okay, so good, pleasantly surprised. And you're the first Northwest worker site at Troy I and you're the first Northwest worker site to try it. I would love. Cheers, enjoy, sláinte. Good seeing you. Fine gentlemen. Cheers, welcome back. Thanks, we're glad to have you again. We are so glad.
