Michelle Glass Styling:

Thank you so much for having me, Kimberly. I'm excited to be here. I've been looking forward to our chat.

Investor Evolution:

My audience knows that this year is my year of elevating. And one of the things that I wanted to do was elevate my personal style and all that stuff that goes, goes into that. And when I was introduced to you through a mutual friend, I was so excited for what you're doing and what you, what your mission is. And it goes along with part of what I'm wanting to do. So it just worked out perfectly. So I would love to hear what inspired you to start your own styling business. Like, how did you get to this point?

Michelle Glass Styling:

That is a very good question. And like anything in life, it always takes lots of twists and turns, right? So I actually majored in fashion in college back at Oregon State University eons ago. Don't want to, don't want to age myself here, but you know, I am midlife. And through the twists and turns of life, I was In the retail industry and then not, and then back in it again. And about nine years ago I started styling for a fashion brand. And through my time with them, I decided I wasn't getting the training and the knowledge that I really felt like I wanted to have to be able to serve my clients better. So I found a personal styling certification program, the Style Coaching Institute, which is based out of London and went through that program. And as I was doing that, I realized that I could have a better purpose, a stronger purpose in really helping women just through any, any brand, any style, holistically, and just really make a difference. And that's huge to me because I feel like our world can be really hard on us. And this is something that can make you feel so beautiful, so powerful. And we deserve to feel that way. So, that's kind of how it all happened.

Investor Evolution:

Perfect. And I love that you Took something that you enjoyed you love and then have found a way to really make an impact with it. And you you've said this a couple of times and even in the intro this holistic Styling and I was like, I don't know what that means So I would love to hear what that is and how does it differ from traditional styling? What is that?

Michelle Glass Styling:

Yeah, I totally understand that question. So the thing with and we think about styling We think about it as being something that's external, right? You just think about what you see on the inside. But the thing with style and the power of style is that when you really work on the outside and putting that together, it can build you up on the inside. So that's one aspect of the holistic piece to it. There is so much that it works. It can work both ways, right? You can feel like super powerful on the inside and go put on a super powerful outfit or if you're feeling like you need that boost of confidence and you put on your favorite color. Or an outfit that has strong detailing to it. It builds you up and you just stand taller. So that's one aspect of it, but there's another layer of it too that most stylists don't get into and that is really looking at a person's form. I can't get into all of this on the podcast because it would go really long, but when you think about who we are and everything in the world being energy, right? We all have a specific form and like energy draws like energy. So when you actually look at Like if I'm looking at you, and I'm looking at your body shape, and I'm looking at the features on your face, if you are wearing clothing that resonates with that same energy, it's going to feel really easy. It'll be like the magnet drawing you to it, rather than repelling you away from it. So that's the second aspect that's a little bit different in what I do.

Investor Evolution:

That's awesome. I am fascinated with frequency, with vibration, the frequency of fabrics. this summer I was looking into, uh, different clothing materials, right? And this thought that they, they have their own energy, they have their own frequency, and that the frequency of Wool and linen is super high versus all these synthetics that are very low and draining. And so that is really fascinating to me, actually. And I love that. And that does, so that does that play into the coloring that we're using? So we want to make sure that we're, we're matching those colors that are vibing with us to help boost that appearance?

Michelle Glass Styling:

Well, color has an energy all of its own that is a little bit different. So, you know, when you're talking about the colors, we're, there are different colors that are going to take more energy to wear. Than other colors, and some are easier for you to wear, so that's kind of where the energy comes in with color, but when you're talking about color analysis itself, you're really trying to find colors that allow you to shine, so you're not being hidden by the color, or the color doesn't walk in the room before you, right? So when it comes to color analysis, and it's a little bit different because you want the colors to really vibe with you, you don't want a color to, you know, be seen before you, you want to be seen at the same time as the color, but there is definitely energy behind color too, so there's so much nuance to everything with style and color analysis and everything. It's just, it's really fun. I could geek out on this all day. You and I could talk for hours.

Investor Evolution:

Yes. Well, okay. So when you said that certain colors may take more energy to wear and is that colors that, that you're not vibing with and that's why, or tell me what you mean by that.

Michelle Glass Styling:

So, for example, colors have different wavelengths. So, like, red can be a color that can be very tiring to wear because it is because of the energy that it has. So, Often, we'll tell people to go up on stage when they're speaking because you want the attention on you when you're speaking. So you want to wear a bold color, but you may find yourself feeling a little bit more exhausted because it takes more energy from you, if that makes sense. And then there's also colors that are called inherent colors, which is kind of fun, too. So if you're looking at your hair color, you're skin color, your eye color, those are going to be your inherent colors. So when you wear those colors, you become more approachable and they're easier for you to wear because they're already a part of you. So isn't it? Fascinating. Oh my gosh. I know I love it.

Investor Evolution:

Okay. Okay, uh, sorry I kind of got off track a little bit because this is just like, yeah, it's okay. We got

Michelle Glass Styling:

into a whole energy thing so yeah,

Investor Evolution:

and so are there so red obviously takes more energy because of the frequency of that Well, let's, let's, let's go back to like first impressions and how does your personal appearance, your personal style really impact those first impressions, you know? So for those of us that are in real estate, in the medical profession, we're corporate, uh, why, why is that important?

Michelle Glass Styling:

So, first impressions are another thing that I love to talk about, because first impressions are made within seven seconds of meeting someone. And today, everything's so much more fast paced, right? So it's even been suggested that now we're talking about a three second time frame. For that first impression to be made. And so when you think about how fast that is, 55 percent of your first impression is based on your visual appearance. So we're talking about your clothes and your body language. So it's not something that someone's coming up and being like, oh, judgy of you. It's not intentional. It's totally subconscious, but because it happens so fast, that's why your appearance is so important. So. When you really think about your appearance in that first impression, what people are making a split second, almost, decision on is whether you're trustworthy or not. So when it's coming to, like, real estate and finance, trust is everything, right? It's really important to build trust with clients. Um, there's also a lot of competition in that space. So it can really make or break landing of the, of the deal or You know, making the sale to and the other thing that when you think about your style and making that first impression, it lasts. So there was a study with Harvard University that found it takes eight subsequent positive interactions to change a negative. opinion that someone has about you. So, when you're thinking about your style, when you go out, you know, if someone's used to seeing you in a work environment and then you go out and you run into them at the grocery store and you're in your sweatpants, that, that's incongruent in their mind and it doesn't really make sense. So, it's really important what we put on our bodies for expressing So much about our values, who we are, um, and how we do business too.

Investor Evolution:

And what are, what are some things that we can do to make sure that first impression is positive and impactful in the way that we're wanting to do So,

Michelle Glass Styling:

for one, really thinking about what you're trying to communicate with your style. Um, what values do you have, right? When you are making that first impression, On someone if you're going to a client meeting, perhaps do a little bit of research on them. Right? Find out where you are stepping into because it's always important with first impressions and style that you're respecting the room you're stepping into when it comes to the room business, the business world, sometimes those times can trump the personal style aspect of things, if you know what I mean. If you're going into a meeting with a CEO or an executive, you're going to want to step up your style a little bit more. And maybe you can't wear the colors you love so much, because typically in business, there's specific colors that you should be wearing.

Investor Evolution:

That's perfect. And so on the flip side, what are the things that, what are some common style mistakes that people make? And what can we do to correct that or prevent that?

Michelle Glass Styling:

So, that's a really good question about common mistakes that are made. So, What I see women often think is that their style doesn't matter or that style is vain or an act of vanity, but when it comes to the importance of those first impressions, it is really, really important. So for one thing, considering that and remembering that you're not being vain when you're putting time and effort into getting dressed. It's actually a So it's really a really important part of showing who you are. Um, the next thing is going to be, like I mentioned a little bit before, not considering that the room that you're going to be in or who you're going to be meeting with when you go out. So how you dress for a meeting with the CEO is going to be different than when you're Potentially meeting a client and maybe you have a client who's in a creative field, right? So you could be a little bit more casual or have a little bit more flair with your style in that way Or if you're going out to meet with a construction manager, you're gonna be able to be a little bit more casual It's always better to dress up than to dress down though Always something to remember. And then another thing is not paying attention to fit. Okay. Fit is really big. And I think that there's a common misconception that when we go out and we shop for clothing, it's supposed to fit right out of the box. But. It's ready to wear that's not really ready to wear. So you always want to fit the largest part of your frame. So if you have broader shoulders, that's what you're going to want to fit. And a tailor, that's a really expensive alteration to make. You can have the waist. They can add darts. So you want to tailor down so it's like your clothing are almost custom fit to you. But that matters in your appearance and how you're presenting yourself. And then the last thing I wanted to share was those intentional finishing touches. So when you think about the accessories and the shoes that you're going to wear, they can make the quickest difference in how your outfit looks and they really can make your outfit feel intentional. So just kind of taking a look in the mirror before you walk out the door and saying do I look like I'm fully put together? Do I need to add a necklace and earring? Do I need to change my shoes? One thing that I will say whether you hate selfies or not is I always say to take a selfie and look at it because it gives you a different perspective on your outfit. So I often will do that when I'm looking at shoes and I'll put on two different kinds of shoes to see what I like better with my outfit. So that's another little tip.

Investor Evolution:

Yeah, that's perfect. And I want to, I do want to go back to the colors because, so thinking about this and the first impression, and I know it obviously can depend on The situation and the meeting or the environment that we're in, but do certain colors convey certain emotions, certain things that we need to be aware of? And can you talk a little bit about that?

Michelle Glass Styling:

Yes, so, you're very right. Colors do that. So, color, again, this could be an entire episode all on its own too, but, um, so there are going to be colors in business that are more common, for example, like if cool colors, blue, black, charcoal gray, those are going to be better for professional settings because they create visual space. There's something about the colors that just gives spaciousness. So that's a stronger color to wear, whereas if you are wearing warmer colors, like browns, beiges, for your, kind of your base neutrals, those are going to be more approachable colors. But when you're talking about the psychology of color, for example, I'm wearing blue today. The psychology of color says that blue, that creates trust. So when you think about bank logos, or you think about, you know, Dell computers, they, their logos are blue. Because they want to create that trust with you, right? Um, whereas purple is a little bit more mysterious, a little bit more adventurous. Uh, red is going to be the power color, right? So if you are wanting to have a strong presence, red is a great color to wear. I mean, it's, it's so much fun. Yellow is an energy color. So when you wear yellow, um, it can actually make people's moods lift. And then orange, orange is actually the energy color too. So that one provides energy. So sometimes if you're speaking, wearing orange could be a great color to wear. Because again, it's going to bring more energy to the room. So it's, It's just, it's fun.

Investor Evolution:

so you are, what, you are a color analyst and tell us what that means and how do we know what looks good on us? How, how do we figure that out?

Michelle Glass Styling:

You get draped. So there are, when you're a When you're analyzing someone for color, you're really looking for three different things. So first you're going to look, I look at undertone. So you're going to either have a cool or a warm undertone. Um, I think a lot of times people think overtone is undertone. So if you have rosacea, if you have like any of the little, um, acne spots, anything like that. If you tan, that's all overtone. Your undertone does not change. So that's one thing that we look at first when we're draping. And one of the things that's powerful is when I have someone sitting in my chair, for instance, because I can do virtual draping as well. When they're sitting there with me getting draped, they see it. They can see what the color does. It's amazing. The next thing is going to be your intensity. So do you have more of a bright intensity to you, or are you a bit muted? So when you're looking at your hair, your eyes, your skin, what is that? Because that's going to help determine your color. And then your contrast level. So do you have a high contrast between your hair, skin, and eyes, or is it low contrast? So when you're thinking about those things, you want to wear colors that are resonating with you. It's so fun. It's, and a lot of times people who are sitting there in my chair, getting their colors analyzed, um. They'll say, I never thought I could wear this color, but you know, I see it. You can see when, when it's happening and when you're getting draped, you can see the darkness start to disappear. You can see, like, the, the lines start to kind of fade when you're wearing the right colors. It's, it's wild.

Investor Evolution:

Well, let me tell you a story. So this sweater, this green sweater, I have never in my life worn this color until like three weeks ago. I walked into a little boutique in our town and the lady is like, are you shopping for anything specific? I was like, here's the deal. My word for the year is elevate. I'm trying to elevate my style. So help. And she is like, okay, do you, can I pick different things? And I was like, yeah, absolutely. So she picked this sweater out and I was like, I never would have picked it up. And I love it. Like, I really, really love the way it feels. I love the way it looks. Um, and it was something that I, I didn't gravitate towards. I don't know why, I definitely do more of the darks and black and, you know, I can do a blue here and there, but I don't know, it just wasn't a color that I ever picked up, and so it's so fascinating to me, this whole color analysis of how it works and, you know, being able to see that, cause I'm like, I don't I'm a science major. I know nothing about the, the like fashion world. And so even though I feel like there is a lot of science to it, right? Yeah. It's just something that I never really looked into. So it's fascinating. Well, and I

Michelle Glass Styling:

think, I think we can also get in our comfort zone, just like with anything. And so for a lot of people, shopping and style is something that They don't understand, because why would they? No one talks about it. And so, you find, you know, a style of shirt that you like, or a style of pants that you like, and you don't break out of that because it's become easy with something that can be complicated. Right? So, for her to have handed you that shirt, It was a great act of kindness and amazing wealth of information because now you know like, hey, I like wearing this color and you like the way you feel when you're wearing it. So, um, so that's kind of cool. It makes your eyes look really beautiful too.

Investor Evolution:

Thank you. That's what everyone has said and I was like, yeah, you knew I didn't know. Yes, it's incredible. Okay, so let's talk about practical styling tips and how can we as busy women who are not only busy at work, busy at home, with the kids, with the cooking, with the, you know, chauffeuring, all the things. How can we create a polished wardrobe, something that we feel good in, that we love? How, how can we go about doing that? Give us some tips on that.

Michelle Glass Styling:

Yes. So one of the important things is to learn your personal style. So if you're not working with a stylist like myself, some ways that you can go out and try to do that is really pay attention to things that you see other people wearing that you gravitate towards and even going into your closet and Seeing the pieces that you love and trying to pay attention If there's any common threads between them and what you might like about them Is there a lot of print? Is there a lot of is it a lot of like? contrast are the fabrics, you know, you were talking about the energy of fabrics and all of that. Are there certain fabrics that you like or that you don't like? So that's, that's going to be the start because style is like, you can squirrel really easy on style because there's always something new. And so it's really trying to hone in on what feels good to you, because personal style should be personal. And then, looking at the color scheme that you have, I think if you're trying to create an effortless wardrobe, This is one of the powers of color analysis is because everything in your color palette works together, so it makes it easy, but if you are trying to build a wardrobe that you can just go in and grab a top and grab a bottom and know they're going to go together, finding those colors that It's a lot of fun. Are your base neutral so you know whether that's navy or gray or black or tan beige Whatever it is and then having you can have color, Obviously that goes in with that because you want to have some fun in there but if you can kind of create I'm going to be doing a video on how to make a capsule or I call them modules of pieces. It makes it really easy to get dressed, especially if you know you need to do it in a snap. And then again, kind of like we talked about with color, if you build your closet on more timeless pieces. So, you know, you want your dark wash denim that has no destruction on it that's a straight leg because that's just going to be timeless or you have your trench coat You have your blazer in your neutrals, You have your basic tees and camis things like that. When you base things off of your timeless pieces, and then you add in the fun here and there Right? Some of the newer, newer things that are coming out. That's what makes your wardrobe really effortless and easy to get dressed in the morning too.

Investor Evolution:

Okay, perfect. So my next question, you kind of answered it was like, what are those timeless pieces? So a straight leg jean. A blazer, some camis, anything else in there? Yeah, um, so

Michelle Glass Styling:

I would do the structured blazer, a polished pointed toe shoe. Could be a flat, could be a pump. The reason for the pointed toe is it is more of a timeless, going to look great on everyone. The idea too is with that point at the end, it's going to lengthen your body. So it makes you look Thinner and elongates your look too. Um, so that's kind of cool, especially in your neutral, that can be helpful because then if it's in your nude skin tone, um, it makes it easy to go with everything. Yep. And then, like I mentioned, the denim, um, pair of trousers with impeccable fit. So right now we are in A silhouette of wide leg and it really is a classic look like

Investor Evolution:

I love the wide leg. Thank you for bringing it back. I hated Skinny jeans.

Michelle Glass Styling:

Oh, yeah, so don't get me started on the skinny jeans friend but yeah that classic wide leg pant and then this one might be a little unexpected but having a lipstick In a powerful color that just gives you that little extra bit of oomph in your step, um, even if it's a wash of color. So if you're some, I always love my bold lipstick, but if you're someone who isn't used to wearing color, you can get some just kind of dab it on your lip. The thing is, as we age, our color starts to desaturate. So having lip color that's not just nude is really important too.

Investor Evolution:

Okay. Okay. Amazing. Yeah. And so for those of us who, um, look like a newborn giraffe when we try to wear heels, we don't have to wear high heels. Is that what I heard? No, you don't have to wear

Michelle Glass Styling:

high heels. You don't have to wear high heels at all. You know, there's a lot of people who have foot issues, right? And we're also in a time when the low profile white sneaker You can wear it with a dress or a skirt, you know, and kind of make things a little bit more casual with that too. Loafers are another great flat that you can wear. So, um, you don't have, you don't have to wear heels. But I will say again that the pointed toe is going to be more of a timeless, looks good on everyone, silhouette for a shoe.

Investor Evolution:

How does this style influence our confidence?

Michelle Glass Styling:

Okay, this is a, this is a great question, and I talk about this a lot on my podcast too. So, have you ever heard of enclothed cognition?

Audio Only - All Participants:

No.

Investor Evolution:

Okay. Learning so much today.

Michelle Glass Styling:

Oh my goodness. Right? Playback. Um, this was a study that was done back in 2012 and they had two different groups of people and they told one, they gave all of them the same white painter's smock, but they told half the group that it was a painter's smock and they told half the group that it was a doctor's coat.

Audio Only - All Participants:

Okay.

Michelle Glass Styling:

What they found is that those who were told they were wearing a doctor's coat, it impacted how they performed and their own self perception of their competence. Their actual competence. So when it comes to style and feeling confident, What you wear matters. Again, like, if you think about a time where you have gone to a fancy event and you've put on a beautiful dress, you know, when you look at yourself in the mirror and you're getting your pictures taken, you just feel, feel better about yourself. And there's even research to show that if you get dressed, there's something in your brain if you work from home and you go to work in your pajamas, you're not as productive as when you actually get dressed, because it signals to your brain that it's time to go to work. So even if you're at home and you want to be in your comfy clothes, getting in your dressier, comfy clothes to sit at your home office, you're going to be productive and you're going to, your, your brain's going to fire faster just because of what you're wearing too. It's, it's wild. It's really

Investor Evolution:

cool. I totally agree with that. I did some telehealth work and I did, I had to make sure I was dressed and ready to go. Regardless, even if no one saw me, but from here up, right? Because, because of that exact same reason, like, I felt like It was business time, I'm ready to go, I'm ready to work, versus I'm just chilling at home, right? Yeah, well, and we would talk about

Michelle Glass Styling:

that top, the um, tabletop dressing, right? Over COVID, we all, everyone would do this, and then they'd have their sweats on the bottom. There's still, when you talk about the energy of clothes. The energy of a sweat pant is going to pull your energy down when you're all dressed up up here, right? It just doesn't, it's not cohesive in your mind either. So yeah,

Investor Evolution:

no, I totally agree. So I had to do that. How can we align our personal style and how can we allow that our personality to come out in our, in our styling? Even though we're trying to build this professional front or branding.

Michelle Glass Styling:

So, there, there are some levels to it, of course. When you're talking about trying to build a personal brand, right? You want your style to align with that and the image that you're wanting to project So, it kind of creates, like I was mentioning, if you go into the office and you look one way, and then when you're out in your casual, normal lifestyle, you're completely not dressing at all the same. It's not consistent, and it's subconsciously, it's really confusing. So, when you can have some sort of thread of your personal style that is in your professional life and your, your personal life, it's going to make you seem more authentic. So that's really important, especially if you have your own personal brand. So you kind of want to align those with your values and your inner strength. So what are you wanting to communicate when it comes to your values? So if you're to have people see you as confident. You'll wear something bold, right? It could be a bold color. It could be a bold accessory. Or if you want someone to see you and think you have really good integrity. Wearing those timeless classic pieces that are just stable all the time, like that's going to be really important. And then if you want people to see that you pay attention to detail, you want to focus on that fit, it's important anyways, right? Very important if you want people to see that intention to detail. Creativity, like you could add a fun little pattern into your style or into your outfits or an interesting accessory. But, um, if you want it to carry through into casual settings and professional ones, You want to have that congruence. So whether that's having some consistency in your color palette, right, inside of your closet. So, um, or instead of a structured blazer, which you would wear for work, putting on a cardigan that is a little bit more structured. So kind of a little bit of that cohesiveness. And then if you have something like a necklace or a watch that you wear all the time, that's something that has a thread of consistency too. So, instead of wearing just like your flip flops, you could wear a loafer out, right, to kind of give that up leveled vibe that keeps your, your personal brand a little bit more elevated, a little bit more consistent. And then, of course, I am not a huge fan of fast fashion. I would rather people have well made, quality items, spend more on those, have fewer of them. But when you have those well made quality pieces too, that's going to help, help speak to who you are and your personal brand also. It doesn't have to be dressy all the time. Just being dressed doesn't have to be dressy, right? Like you can go out and have, I'm sure you've heard of the Spanx Air Essentials. Have you heard of those and how dreamy those are? So like a set like that with the wide leg and you wear like a little white. Low profile sneaker with it put on some jewelry to just kind of dress it up just elevates it a little bit You're casual, but you're still put together if that makes sense Yeah

Investor Evolution:

Is there anything that that we didn't touch on that you're like we need to talk about this. Is there anything that I missed as far as Things that you feel like are really important as we're elevating our style that we need to remember.

Michelle Glass Styling:

Yes So the only other thing that I really want to add, because we've, we've talked about a lot, a little bit of a lot, is that your presence really does matter and that external appearance, again, it's not vanity. It's part of who you are and communicating who you are and your value and your worth. So your skill set actually is assumed. Based on your appearance. So if you pay attention to those details in your outfits, it communicates that you really value, value quality and you're detail oriented, where if you're not paying attention to how you're dressing and who you're in the room with, um, it can actually make it seem like you're not going to maybe pay as much attention to the details in the work that you do. Again, it's a subconscious thing, but style is, Really important. We all have to wear clothes. True, true. Thank goodness, right? We all have to wear clothes. So, why not do it in a way that feels like you, that makes you feel good and elevated about yourself, makes you go into your day more powerfully, and, It just takes you into the next level era of the woman that you're meant to be. I love,

Investor Evolution:

I love it. Yes. And I think that's a great point of, uh, that subconscious playing a role of how people are perceiving you, whether they know it or not. And, uh, I work in the medical field. So. So scrubs is, scrubs is a thing and, and I've definitely, I worked in urgent care. So I definitely wore scrubs there because wearing something nice and getting blood on your shoe is not, not where I want to be. But my, where I'm working now is more of a traditional office setting and we're not doing procedures where I'm at. So I have shifted right from wearing scrubs to, Being put together every day, and it does make a difference. I do think it makes a huge difference. One of the things that you have coming up that I'm really excited about is your upcoming master class. So can you share a little bit about your style master class? What can participants expect? What is it about? Oh my gosh,

Michelle Glass Styling:

it is going to be so much fun. So it's going to be a one hour workshop with a Q& A at the end. And it's actually called three steps to stop wasting money and build a wardrobe you love. So inside of the masterclass, I'm going to talk about Three of the most common mistakes that women make, the keys to intentional shopping, because there's a lot of unintentional shopping that happens out there and we waste a lot of money in that too. And how to find those hidden pieces in your closet.'cause we all have so much hidden potential in there, um, that we is either lost in the chaos of what we already own or we don't realize how much potential it has. So that goal of the masterclass is effortless dressing and having confidence in your style. So, if anyone wants to sign up for that, it's coming up really soon, you, they can register at https://style.michelleglassstyling.com/masterclass. And then the other thing I wanted to say is I have a free resource too, that may be something that your viewers would like, and it's called the style jumpstart. So inside of that I have five game changer pieces for your style and five instant outfit boosters. So it's a guide and I would love if they want to grab it. It's totally free. And that one's at Michelleglass.biz/jumpstart. So okay,

Investor Evolution:
