TeaFlix Interview with John Carter Cash

John Carter Cash is a Grammy®-winning record and film producer, writer/director, singer-songwriter, and author whose creative work extends far beyond the studio. The grandson of Maybelle Carter and only child of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash (who was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame just last week,) he actively preserves and advances his family’s musical legacy. He began producing with June’s Grammy®-winning Press On (1999), then worked with Rick Rubin as associate producer on Johnny Cash’s American III and American IV (the latter earning three CMA awards). He produced June’s Wildwood Flower (Grammy®, 2003) and the three-time-nominated Unbroken Circle: The Musical Heritage of the Carter Family. Other credits include Marty Stuart’s Badlands, Billy Joe Shaver’s Everybody’s Brother (Grammy®-nominated), and extensive work with Loretta Lynn, including the acclaimed, Grammy®-nominated Full Circle (2016). In 2024 he won a Grammy® for Best Arrangement (instrumental or a cappella) for “Folsom Prison Blues” with The String Revolution and Tommy Emmanuel. Across two decades he has produced hundreds of recordings for artists such as Ralph Stanley, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Mavis Staples, Vince Gill, and John Prine. He has two Grammys® and has produced five additional Grammy®-winning records. As an artist, his albums include Bitter Harvest (2003), The Family Secret (2010), We Must Believe in Magic (2017), The Cash Collective’s Hey Crow (2020), and the latest adventure Pineapple John (released Sept 12, 2025). He has authored children’s books, the biographies Anchored in Love and House of Cash, the novel Lupus Rex, and The Cash and Carter Family Cookbook. He owns Cash Cabin Enterprises in Hendersonville, TN, producing at the historic Cash Cabin Studio where his father Johnny Cash recorded hundreds of songs.
