SPEAKER_00:

Welcome to the Amazing Mindset podcast series. I'm your host, Jed Roberts, and together we will be going on a journey to explore our thinking and just how that thinking from moment to moment creates the world as only we see it. I like to describe the podcasts as tapas or quick bites. as they are quite short in length, yet they're just enough to stimulate the mental taste buds that create for us that wonderful feeling of curiosity. Our journey is very much a voyage of self-discovery and of self-awareness. It's great to have you on board. Now, let's go explore. Welcome to the 10th in the series of my amazing mindset podcasts today we're going to consider the notion that if you need to fix something you really need to know how it works and then we should apply that to our thinking my dear friend and mentor Helen Diaz was conducting a seminar on relationships at the start of the meeting she apologized to her group for not being able to provide them with a cold drink on a rather warm afternoon because her fridge wasn't working. The group then spent a few minutes relating stories of how they'd suffered the same fate at some point and each had their own suggestion as to what the problem might be with the fridge. But, as Helen explained, the bottom line was that no matter how much time was spent mulling over what the problem might be all the thoughts and suggestions were not going to fix the fridge she explained that they needed someone who knew how to fix it and that person would be the one who knew how it worked someone who knows how that particular fridge functions can discover the problem area even though it might look to us like it's somewhere else Helen went on to discuss with her group the need to know how relationships of all kinds actually work and find the important and necessary ingredients instead of talking problems Helen talked about trust and respect give and take Consideration, forgiveness, empathy, caring, sharing, responsibility and reliability. So, in our exploration of our thinking, it's important that we understand just how our thinking is working if we wish to make our thinking less stressful and generally more healthy and positive. In previous podcasts in this series, we've considered how criticism works, how regrets work, how worry works. Simply understanding how criticism works allows us to feel better about it in general and teaches us to reflect rather than react. Understanding how regrets work allows us to dwell less on those past mistakes we made and come to terms with the fact that we've moved on understanding how worry works allows us to simply worry less and in doing so will help us stave off stress and anxiety understanding how all those different thinking traps work allows us to take notice when we're falling into one of them Understanding our amazing uniqueness as thinkers allows us to respect more someone else's thinking. Understanding how our incredible thinking works allows us to realize more readily that when that thinking becomes unhealthy, or contaminated as some describe it, or misguided, it allows us to notice when those traps begin to ensnare us. It allows us to notice when we are giving our imagination way too much freedom to create the movies in our heads and the scenarios which simply don't exist except in our thoughts. And just as we have to listen to others in order to understand them, it's important that we listen to ourselves in order that we understand where we are. In the next podcast, I'll be reading you a story I wrote in my first book, Amazing, A Voyage of Self-Discovery, called Miss World. Thank you for joining me on today's podcast. I hope you've enjoyed today's journey enough to join me on the next one, and perhaps share this podcast with your friends, colleagues, and connections.
