Living Empathy: Stories of Care, and Connection
Recorded in April 2025, this heartfelt conversation with Aatir explores the many layers of empathy, including how it shapes our work, our care for others, and even how we receive it ourselves. A health and disability sector worker, passionate human being, spiritual soul, and lover of horror films, music, and theatre, Aatir reflects on the stories and lived experiences that have shaped his relationship with empathy. Together, we delve into mana-enhancing approaches to support work, the complexities of self-care, and the importance of normalising accessibility and mental health needs. This episode invites you to sit with the power of empathy, not just as an idea, but as something that “lives in the body,” – in Aatir’s words - and transforms how we connect with one another.
Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!
Recorded in April 2025, this episode is a deeply reflective conversation between Aatir and I. Aatir is a health and disability sector worker, a passionate and spiritual human being, and someone with a genuine love for horror films, music, and theatre.
Throughout the discussion, Aatir shares how empathy has been woven into his life, first through the lived experiences of his parents and their extended family relationships, and later through his own journey as a support worker for people with intellectual disabilities. He explains how this role fundamentally shaped him, teaching him that empathy is not just a feeling, but a way of doing mana-enhancing work, work that uplifts people’s dignity, particularly those who need extra support from the able-bodied community.
Together, we explore the different dimensions of empathy:
· How empathy enables someone to become a caretaker, a team leader, and eventually a manager who leads with compassion,
· Why empathy “lives in the body,” – in Aatir’s words - and how reflecting on one’s experiences can help navigate it without becoming overwhelmed or burdened, and
· The moments when empathy is directed towards him, and the difficulty he sometimes feels in receiving it.
Aatir also offers critical insights into self-care, questioning what it truly means, where the idea originates, and how one’s privilege affects the ability to even practise self-care. For many, he notes, self-care is not a given.
The episode concludes with a call to normalise accessibility needs and to recognise the very real challenges faced by those living with mental health conditions. Through stories, reflection, and honesty, this conversation invites you to rethink empathy not as an abstract concept, but as a living, breathing practice that can transform the way we care for one
