Megan, welcome to the copywriting for coaches podcast. My name is Megan patchy and having your brand like you on the earth we help you learn all the things that you've been trying to articulate about your business I have never been able to put into copy. We're going to go deep to up level your business without adding more to your already full plate. We'll keep it simple and sustainable. Sound like a breath of relief. Let's dive in, whether you want more energy, better focus, or fewer mid afternoon crashes. I know I'm not the only one thinking about how to improve my health and wellness this year, along with all of my other goals for me, personally, doctors have left me out of their office because I was so healthy. I eat well, workout regularly and get enough food. I've even crossed the food line of a full iron main triathlon and summoned Mount Kilimanjaro. And then there was this season where everything changed. All of a sudden, it was harder to function as a high performer in all categories of my life, even though I was still doing everything right. That was until I met Allison Jordan, she is a certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition practitioner, founder of better belly therapies, and host of a top 1% global podcast, better belly podcast. Over the last six years, she has helped over 600 clients across the globe find and address the root causes of their whole body health issues when nothing else has worked her better. Belly blueprint reduces symptoms like floating brain fog, fatigue, hormone imbalance and so much more, by 80% in three to six months on average, from gut health to mental clarity, you can heal naturally with the right tools and knowledge. Statistics show that the most common new year's resolutions concern health and finance, according to Forbes and I figured this was the perfect time to bring Allison on the show, because your health absolutely impacts your businesses, which impacts your your finance as well. With her method, you no longer have to run a business through the fatigue and the physical ailments that steal our vitality and honestly, take up a lot of our mental capacity, worrying about it too, you can finally feel your best. I guess this was my number one resolution for 2024 and I achieved the two Allison's at better value blueprint program, which you can learn more about in the showcase. You'll get healthier and more energized that you can run your business with more ease, like your vision and CEO you are. Today, we are chatting with Allison Jordan of better belly therapies, and I am so excited to chat with her today for a number of reasons. One is that, personally, I am in her better belly blueprint program, and have seen so many health benefits that I just didn't even know were available to me, because I'm generally a healthy person, but these tweaks that she's had me do have made such incredible changes that I didn't even know were possible, which sounds silly, but I think because somehow things are so normalized, like I thought this was just postpartum, I thought this was just aging. And it turns out it's not, and there's things that we can do. And on this New Year's Eve episode, because so many individuals set health related goals, and statistically, according to Forbes health, 48% of people prioritize health in their resolutions. And I know for myself and to anyone else listening, this is no surprise, that our physical well being, our physical health, is absolutely connected and linked to our professional performance, how much work we are capable of doing. And of course, I'm not stressing like a hustle mentality. You don't need to work 80 hours a week, 70 hours a week, even 40 hours a week, to make a great income and be really fulfilled in your business. And actually our last our Christmas Eve episode was all about rest, so go listen to that. But this, I think, is a very important conversation to have, because you can have the copywriting skills in the world. If your health is not optimized, it's going to limit not just the amount of content you produce, but really the quality of it as well. So Allison is here with us today to help clarify some things for us. So welcome to the show. Hey, Megan, thanks so much for having me. I am so excited to bring your expertise on here, because it has moved mountains for me, honestly, no exaggeration there. But like we said, our physical well being really influences our ability to perform effectively in business, whether that is copywriting, marketing or beyond, delivering to our clients. So can you discuss the connection between gut health, these cognitive functions that we rely on, like focus and creativity and things like that. Yeah, for sure. So first off, I am going to say there are so many connections between the gut and our and our minds, our our mental capacities, our ability to think, that I'm just going to touch the tip of the iceberg, and if anybody wants to know more, I am providing links that are in the show notes where they can dive deeper into podcast episodes on my podcast. But I'll just highlight a couple. And the first thing I will say is that gut literally is connected to the brain. It's like almost 100% connected, right? The gut is one of the only one of the major ways that we intake everything in the world. So if there's something that's going to mess up our bodies, it's it's going to come through the gut. There's really only a couple other places it could come through. But, you know, the skin and lungs are going to be two big ones, but the gut is, is a huge, mammoth component of where things are going to go wrong. So if you're if you're struggling with symptoms in the body, I don't care where it is, it doesn't have to be in the gut. You actually might have no symptoms in the gut. But say you are dealing with brain fog or anxiety or poor sleep or fatigue or an afternoon slump, say something even as basic as an afternoon slump, where we're like, I just need coffee to power through and we normalize it. It's actually a cry of your body saying something's wrong. So how does the gut get involved? I'm just going to highlight a couple things that people can munch on and dive into deeper if any of these resonate with them. Number one, I like to talk about the gut and anxiety. I have a podcast episode called Five causes of anxiety that are in your gut, in your mind. It's called, it's not all in your head. And in that episode, I talk about things like low digestive enzymes. You're like, what's a digestive enzyme? You cannot solve low digestive enzymes, or things that help you break down your food. Taking a supplement supplements the issue, but it doesn't fix it, right? You want to fix the problem? Well, digestive enzymes are things that help you break food down into usable components, protein into amino acids. Amino acids help you build muscle. Amino acids help you build neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine. If you can't break down protein because your stomach acid is low, or your Bile is low, which is another digestive enzyme, or your pancreatic enzymes are low, then you can't break down protein to build your neurotransmitters, to focus, to get rewards from your work, to be able to think and maintain focus and memory. So if you're dealing with any of those issues via digestive issue. And I'll say, if that's something you resonate with, go listen to that episode, even if you don't deal with anxiety, because I talk about a little bit more deeper how to resolve low digestive enzymes. Because I'm not saying just go find a enzyme supplement and that'll fix you or find the right one. That's not how it works. But other thing that you can cause, can cause anxiety, is pathogens. Pathogens is like a big scientific word, referring to any type of bacteria, virus, parasite, whatever that is in your body that shouldn't be there. So it's, it's an abnormal thing that's, that's a living creature, that's that's taking advantage of you. Well, there's a pathogen called C Diff cluster D difficile, and it interrupts the and it hangs out in the gut. It interrupts the conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine, and that can cause weight gain. It can cause fatigue. It can cause, and it can cause a lot of mental issues, like For Focus, ADHD, like symptoms or memory, all, again, all the things have to do with mental the ability to do mental work is going is massively impacted by that. I had a really great example of that, where I had a grad student who was killing it in school. She was applying to school or applying to jobs because she was about to graduate, she was over, she was going through tons of anxiety. I've been working with the counselor, couldn't, couldn't break through. And you can know, like, if you have anxiety, it's hard to think, it's hard to work right. Like, and it maybe it's about something really specific, like your kids or whatever, but sometimes it's just like, I just feel anxious, and I don't know why. Well, her counselor said maybe you should just get someone to check your gut. Um, which is amazing for this counselor to say that she comes to me looking at all her other symptoms that again, she's decided have been normal for her. And I'm like, this looks like a case of C diff. We do the test, we find it, then anxiety goes away. She stops having anxiety. She stops having painful periods, and she it's like, she has her life back. She can finish her grad school, she can finish doing her her job applications, and was really able to move forward. That's just two of the five that I discussed in that episode. Like, for you, coming into our program and meeting me, and me kind of sharing some things like, that's not normal. And here's some tweaks you could make to get massive inputs. And you were, you were a little disbelieving, and I do not like I was not offended. You were, you were also maybe a little like, Look, lady, I work out five days a week. I eat healthy. I am a vegetarian, vegetarian, not vegan, right? And I was like, they're all great things. I'm really glad you do them. They're definitely not hurting you, necessarily, but symptoms you're sharing with me are, like, red flags, like that afternoon slump that you had. I would not have believed it until I did it and, like, because I had met you in person and we actually roomed together at a conference, was definitely an amount of trust in there that I had with you. Yeah, if I didn't have that level of trust with you, I would be like, This is crazy, because it just, I mean, for someone who doesn't know, like, who doesn't come from that field, like, Oh, does anxiety or brain fog, which is up here from from the gut, and especially if you have no gut symptoms, right? Which people really the disbelief hangs really high, like it's one thing. If they're like, Yeah, I get some bloating. And some people listening might be like, Yeah, I believe you. But all your people who are now, who don't have GI issues, they'll say, but I don't have any gut symptoms. You don't have to have any for your gut to be wrecking the rest of your body, which is why I'm so glad you're on coming on this episode, because of me, it was like, I just didn't know what I didn't know. Now that I know it's like, opened up this whole new world and going down this path of healing that you have listed out in your better belly blueprint. It's just been like, so like, eye opening to me. Just like, learn, like I thought I knew how to be healthy, you know, as an athlete, as a healthy person. And just like all my friends say, like, I'm like, the healthiest person that walks into, like, any room that I walk into. So I was like program. That's the last thing I need, but experiencing all these crazy symptoms, and it is still wild to me that two young kids running a business all the life things happening, don't drink any caffeine, and I don't really get the afternoon slump anymore. And it's been less than a year of working with you. And I know most people actually get results faster. I've been taking my time a little bit more, but it's, I mean, I feel like most people will like talk to any of my mom friends with young kids. It's like, Are you like? That can't be true. So you like drink tea then, or, you know, and it's just like, they can't wrap their mind around it. And, yeah, it's so great to, like, get to that afternoon and be like, Wow, I still have energy. I still have focus. I can still, you know, have two hours until I have to pick up my kids from the school that, I need to get this work done, and to have that focus has been so amazing, and so you've been doing a great job of breaking down, like, all these more medical terms, but more scientific terms, of like, what specific actually happening here? Doctors don't talk about this, and that's why there could be even disbelief or like, What the heck are you talking about? Like, I was talking about the liver there isn't functioning optimally. I don't mean you have a liver disease. I simply mean it's not functioning optimally with Doc which doctors cannot find they are they do not have the right testing or mindset to be able to to confirm or deny that we do in our program. But if your liver isn't functioning optimally, it has to do its job at night, which means it'll turn on at night. It turns on between two to 4am it will wake you up in that window. So if you're someone listening to this, and you're waking up between two to 4am doesn't even have to be every night, but semi regularly, liver is waking you up. Top of that, you could potentially be waking up sweating, and that's because the liver pushes so much blood through it, it heats up your body, and it will wake you up, because it basically turns on your metabolism, but you could also potentially be sweating. So I get women who think they're going through perimenopause or early menopause, and it's actually sweats from their liver turning on that go away as soon as we do a liver protocol and get rid of the toxins that are bothering the liver to begin with. So that's like another way that if your sleep is being disturbed, it could potentially be related to your gut. There's also things like 80% of your melatonin, which is your sleep hormone, is made in the gut, not 80% 80% only last 20% comes from your eyes and the light. So you can have amazing sleep hygiene. You're not You're avoiding blue light. You have blue light glasses. You like dim the lights at night. You don't watch TV. I don't care what you're doing, and you're not if you're struggling with sleep at night, it's not your sleep hygiene, even if you have horrible, I actually, I, on paper, have horrible sleep hygiene. Like, not the worst, but like, it's not I watch TV before bed. Sometimes I don't care. I then sleep after that. Like, I don't have an issue. So it's not all about all these like, have to work really hard at sleep. And so people who feel like they're having to work really hard in their health, you, I feel like you were kind of in that boat. You're like, you're really fishing, like, but I do all these things. I'm like, I feel like, like, you can still do all those things, but it shouldn't have to feel like it's this mountain of work that doesn't even yield amazing results. Yeah, I was doing like, all the typical, you know, right, things that a doctor would tell you, eat healthy, workout regularly, get enough sleep, and I was doing all of those things, and yet was still feeling so awful. And that's when you said, like, that is a sign that, like, something deeper is wrong, because you are doing all the right things. And like, if that was enough, then you would have been healed by now, yeah. And it was, like, a tough love thing that I needed to hear and be like, yeah, like, I need to. I want different results. I gotta do something differently. And even what you were just explaining with, like, 80% of your sleep hormone comes from the gut. And it's like entrepreneurs have all of these morning routines, night routines to optimize sleep and whatever. And like, actually, like, if you 8020 rule it then, like, just because you, you know, remove the blue light that is not the 80% that is actually, you know, making significant help for you. Oh, I've never thought of that in the 8020 rule. I love that, yes, and I think for this last year of of knowing you and working together as well, I think some of this other silly things that are normalized, and especially in the entrepreneurial world, like with you know, we want to be optimized, is a lot of people are, like, blindly taking supplements, like so many people say, like, Oh, you just gotta take magnesium, because all these high performers are doing that. I've had people tell me that, or like, oh, just take zinc, take this, take that. And like, Sure, maybe it might help. It can't hurt. I don't know, but blindly taking supplements, it's like you're almost wasting your money, because supplements can really add up. And like, you don't even know if that's actually what you need, or if there's something deeper going on that is actually like, making you need that supplement, if you even got the right one. So I love what you do in your program is like, you have us take lab tests, and that actually saves us money. I'm like, promoting you so hard right now, and I'm like, this is just my story too. It like, actually saves you money because you're not buying all these supplements that, like, aren't actually serving you. And I know I really appreciated that, because I feel like, Oh, now I know what's actually going on inside of me, and I can take the most direct path to heal it, versus just playing these guessing games, following this, that whatever, and not really actually knowing where I'm going. So I guess my next question for you is, what are some actual steps entrepreneurs can take to improve their health and consequently their business performance as well? Yeah, 100% so the first step I would recommend is get as direct and clear on what is causing the problem as possible. Now that can one step, even just to identify what is causing the problem, you can categorize what the problem is. And I would say, get as picky as you can, because most of us have been brainwashed into thinking that a lot of our symptoms are normal. It's Mom Brain. It's, it's getting older, like you mentioned the beginning, it's, whatever it is. It's, I'm busy. I have a lot of things I need to think of, but if it, maybe it's forgetfulness. It's slow to wake up in the morning. It's that afternoon slump. It's, you know, your body kind of aches and hurts. Body aches can actually be because of something we call systemic inflammation. It doesn't necessarily mean you need a massage or you need PT, so maybe you'd benefit from it. It could actually mean that your gut is sucking up inflammation from the gut lining into the bloodstream, and the bloodstream is causing achiness. So I, like, you know, you can make a laundry list of like, what do I want to get rid of, right? And then from there, get as clear as possible on what is causing a problem. And in business terms, not doing this is essentially, like, if you have a business and you you're going to make more mistakes just by flailing. If you're, like, we have a conversion problem, I'm just going to start changing things. Or, like, we have a leads problem. I'm just going to start doing stuff you really want to know what's working, what's not and why, and the better data you have, the better decisions you're going to make that's going to give you a better outcome with less effort and energy. But it does take energy. It can be so tempting to just buy the supplement or to just implement the new business strategy without data, because it feels like you're doing more. There is this delayed gratification and getting clear what you even need to be doing. What is the actual problem in your business? And so for this, what this looks like is lab testing. And I don't mean lab testing that your doctor runs, unfortunately, blood work. I like to describe it as it'll tell you what is wrong. Oh, like your calcium is low, or your glucose is high, or your cholesterol is high, but that doesn't tell you why. And doctors give us the false security sense of security that blood work will tells us both, well, your cholesterol is high, so then they come up with some crap reason, like because you eat meat or something, and that's actually BS research. It's really horrible research. I didn't plan on sharing this episode, but I will. I have three steps to lower your cholesterol naturally, and then PMS, because they're actually connected. You might not have both, but that's episode 110 I'll have that in the show notes, and then I also have a whole podcast episode on blood work. And I'll just go grab that for you on how, basically how you can read your blood work better than your doctor, but basically, why your doctor? Why blood work isn't the holy grail of information that we think it is, and that it's treated like, like. Fun fact, if you have low iron, it's not necessarily kind of low iron, not because of your iron intake. But because you have low stomach acid, you have to have high stomach acid to absorb iron. It could be because you have a pathogen, your body will literally hide iron from pathogens like a parasite or H Pylori, because the pathogen needs iron to function. So your body will kind of like, try to be like, we don't have any iron. No iron here. Why don't you go starve? Meanwhile your own red blood cells are struggling. So there's so many reasons why blood work is not specific enough. You have to have functional lab testing. And I don't mean VIOME, I don't mean tiny health I don't mean all these like what we call direct to consumer labs. And I don't know if your clients know these names, but these are the labs that people are wasting their money on before they work with me, and I'm just trying to, like, name brand, like, really get people's attention on stuff that that the marketing is beautiful around the results are crap. And really the education around behind it is crap. So functional app testing looks like things like stool testing that's not done at a hospital. It's much more specific. I like to use the GI map by Genova diagnostics, urine testing, like the organic acids test or the Dutch test, which looks at sex hormones, cortisol levels. The organic acids test can look at pathogens. It can look at transmitter levels, H, T, M, A, which is a hair sample for heavy metals, mineral imbalance, mineral deficiency. Heavy metals can cause so much brain symptoms, brain fog, brain just like feeling that you're really cognitively slow, memory problems, energy problems, and then a food sensitivity test, why food sensitivities. You could have zero GI symptoms with foods you're sensitive to, but when you eat foods you're sensitive to, you get a cortisol release, meaning your cortisol spikes, and then it plummets. So might feel okay with the spike that you might feel jittery and anxious, and you'll associate it with I'm jittery and anxious about this client load I have. I'm jittery and anxious about my financial status this month. I'm jittery and anxious about my kids, or it's because I drink that coffee. But it could actually be food you ate with the coffee that you actually have a sensitivity to. This test is the best food sensitivity test out on the market. I can't get into it in this episode. I'm going to actually be releasing an episode in the new year doing a food sensitivity test analysis. So people want to come subscribe to the podcast. I'm going to be more there, but that's where I would really Step Start, is those testing and I, I, I actually that's what we do at the beginning of our program, the better belly blueprint. And just as, like a side note, as like an action step set right now, if someone wants to know more about these tests and more about what they test for, they can go to better belly therapies.com/training. And I actually have a training on something called the Five toxin trap that shows how these five top categories of toxins are literally causing every single symptom and autoimmune disorder in your body. I cannot recommend enough like, guys do this. I know for me and my own story, I was in denial. I was like, I don't have a para, like a parasite. And because I have this identity that like I'm healthy, I've always been healthy. I have healthy habits. I'm like, super disciplined. There's no way. Then I did the test, because I was like, Well, I trust Allison, this is what she says. Like, what the heck. I might as well. And I remember, with each test result that came back, I was shocked. I was like, There's no way. There's no way. Like, I went through the grief process. I was like, I was in denial at first I was like, and then I was like, Okay, well, like, I believe in science, and I needed that science, that data, that lab result to show me what I didn't want to believe about myself, yeah, to believe about myself because my identity is that I've always been healthy, yes, and there's these other things that you can't see to the naked eye that are going on within you that like, I'm so glad that I now know taking the steps to resolve, and even if you take the test and Like, nothing comes back wrong, which I would say, I would be very hard to believe that nothing, you know, like, does anyone have a test? But like, Oh no, actually, it's perfectly fine. Yeah, not if you do enough tests. If you do one test, you could potentially have done the one test that doesn't have anything on it rarely happens, even just with one test with the test we run. But if you're running really, like a 360 testing, which you really want that you cannot get away with one test, I just I could not be I could have not effectively healed the 600 plus clients that I've worked with if I did not run multiple tests on them, I I'm not that smart. We have to have the data, but, yeah, when you have that data, no, no one's ever come back with nothing. But I do have a clause that you can get a full refund if your lab tests come back. It's like, that's our refund policy. If you do the lab tests and in 60 days you get those results, there's nothing to work on or improve, we will hand you your money back. Because I'm a, I am betting that there's something going to be wrong. And B, I don't want your money if there's nothing for us to help so and I want to actually add on one thing, what to what you're saying, is the data is not only helpful for people who are like but I am already really healthy. It's help for the people who who actually the the opposite is actually Allison. I know I'm not healthy, that what they do is they assume they know what the issue is, but I know I just need to eat healthier. I know I just need to eat less sugar. I know I just need to get to the gym more often. I know I just need to go on more 10 minute walks. And yes, all those things can be good for you, but sometimes the reason you they're not even as productive. And let me tell you, those walks, those workouts, those diet changes you try to make when they are not effective, you are you are actually getting feedback to say, Stop doing that. Right? Think about so people listening to this. Maybe they're copywriters, or they're in marketing, and they're they're interested in these conversations around like, how to market better if you have a client that you're working with, I want you to think about your own expertise. Do you get clients who are like, this isn't working, like, I'm just gonna stop and you're like, we haven't even fully implemented anything right? You're having the same issue if you're if you're implementing the wrong thing, because you don't even have the right data that you're going to give up. So a lot of times that and then, and then you can walk around with identities of i i can never get better in my health. I have a willpower. I'm not strong enough. I'm so that's the opposite identity. And I get clients who are usually in either camp. They're rarely in the middle. They're either very much Listen, I need you to beat me into submission and make sure I'm accountable and never. My first clients ever was a six figure. Wow, I forgot about this. Megan, she was a six figure copywriter. Her name's Abby. She's been on my podcast six figure, and she specialized in email, and she got on her call with me, and she said, I want you to make sure I never eat another gummy bear. She was having issues with sugar cravings. She was a she was a long distance ultra marathon runner. And I was like, Honey, your issue is not cell power. Your issue is your gut microbiome is hijacking your brain and making you crave sugar. This is not a you issue. You have an alien in your gut. You think it's you. How many beliefs she she didn't even have to do mindset work. It was just like gone. It was she was getting that. It those issues because she was eating food she was sensitive to and she didn't know like spinach in an egg white omelet in the morning, she was sensitive to spinach, and she would get these after eating her egg white omelet breakfast with broccoli and spinach and vegetables in it, she would get these massive cravings for what she called crap sugar, so it was usually gummy bears and ice cream. And she's like, literally, Allison, what is wrong with me? I like, literally just ate an egg white omelet. I'm like, well, and I didn't know what the issue was until we did the testing. Until we did the testing, I couldn't say the broccoli and the spinach. Then we got the testing back, and three days after altering her diet, she stopped having her sugar cravings decreased 80% that's crazy, and because on paper, a spinach egg white omelet is like, super healthy, but do the testing and it might not be healthy for you specifically. So that is, we got super specific with her, yeah. Man, that is so good. And then just to wrap up, here is, how can business owners set realistic health goals that align with their business objectives for the new year. If there's, like, one practical tip to take away that you could give, what would it be in micro steps? So I would say, a lot of times, we get to January, or we get to the new year and we say, I'm gonna, I'm gonna change everything, right? And it's really hard to change everything, and it's really hard to sustain those things. So like, a really good example of micro steps is you think about your end goal, like this, reverse engineering. By the way, you most likely would benefit from having an expert help you, because you still think, I just don't want to have an afternoon slump. And you're now thinking, I'm just gonna pop coffee, like, I'm just gonna, like, go cold turkey on coffee, and that'll fix everything, or whatever it is that whatever plan comes to mind. But maybe a more realistic thing is January a micro step, tangible micro step, is start finding content you can listen to with health practitioners, to find someone you would trust to work with. So find new podcasts, if you like podcasts, or find gurus on Instagram. You can watch their short, real little reels, or watch YouTube shorts, however you liked it. And take content, get new people into your feed who aren't just business owners, like, or marketers, right, like, like, get new people and then February, maybe you have enough data to hire that practitioner. That's your one micro step. In February, you find the way you want to work with them. Maybe they have three different ways. You determine the best way you want to work with them. You work with them. In March, you finally have the call you booked however you're going to work actually, finally have the call with them. And a tangible micro step is just send ahead of time any labs you have right April now order the labs that that practitioner recommended. And if you're like, Dude, that's four months and I still haven't healed anything. Hey, if you're if it fits for you and your season, you can do those four steps closer together. Also, if you think in micro steps, and you really give yourself a dopamine hit for like I did my January ask. I listened to podcasts, and like, found some people I really trust, is a win. And maybe that's this episode for some people. Maybe it's not like, I'm I might not be the person you trust or the person that you feel that you resonate well with, but you are listening to a health podcast. So like, like, I'm doing it, I'm doing some of the work. And so I'd say micro steps are super helpful. I love that. I mean, I think micro steps in general are always so good. And I love the way that you laid it out of like there is a process to doing this. And I could go on and on about what a big difference it has made for me personally.
