Let's Talk Sickle Cell Disease: A Real-Life Perspective
Dear Listeners,
June 19th is World Sickle Cell Awareness Day. The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America emphasizes that the goal of this annual observance is to raise awareness, and "to increase public knowledge and understanding of sickle cell disease, and the challenges experienced by patients and their families and caregivers." The World Health Organization characterizes Sickle Cell disease as a group of genetic blood disorders affecting 7.74million people. Sickle Cell disease affects the red blood cells and is commonly know for the sickle/crescent shape red blood cells. This can lead to the sickle shaped cells blocking small blood vessels preventing blood from flowing in that particular part of the body, which is what ultimately leads to complications associated with sickle cell. This only touches the surface of what persons who live with sickle cell disease deal with. This year’s World Sickle Cell Day theme is “Global Action, Local Impact: Impowering Communities for Effective Self-Advocacy.” Listeners, do you know what sickle cell disease is or do you know someone who lives with it? As you tune into this episode, I urge you to consider how you can contribute to this years goal, whether its seeking out further understanding of how sickle cell impacts those who live with it, donating blood or more. Don't miss opportunities to learn more, knowledge is empowerment!
