Beyond Forgetfulness: Let's Talk about Alzheimer's Disease

Dear Listeners,

September is World Alzheimer's Month. The purpose of this observance raise awareness, highlight prevention, dispel myths, promote early intervention, diagnosis, and support for affected individuals and their families. Bermuda, some of us think that Alzheimer's is something that just comes with aging and is just about memory loss but discourse tells us otherwise. According to the World Health Organization, many of the lifestyle behaviors that impact health and protect against chronic disease, are some of the same things we can practice to reduce our risks for Alzheimer's Disease. These things include, physically active, eating a healthy diet, not smoking, avoiding harmful alcohol consumption, and maintaining healthy blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, staying mentally and socially active and more. Beyond prevent, early detection and understanding the local community resources for treatment and support can have a major impact on quality of life.
