The Current
We're seeking inspiration toward deeper discipleship through conversations with people working toward justice, cultivating deep spiritual practices, forming community and connection in significant ways, and helping one another heal from trauma. As we follow Christ to the margins of society, to the wounded and grieving, and into the hard work of peacemaking, we find that we are not alone on this journey. Join us to resist despair, and to regain some hope in the world, in the church, and in Christ.
Most weeks, Pastor Chris Nafis is talking with scholars and practitioners who are inspiring and faithful, and some weeks Pastor Chris is engaging with the book of Acts. Each week, we find the Spirit calling us deeper into the death and resurrection of Jesus, into a life with God, and into loving one another well.
This is a ministry of Living Water Church of the Nazarene, which gathers in San Diego's East Village, the epicenter of homelessness in this city. We are committed to meaningful worship, community formation, and service. Join us sometime :)
The Current
Preview - Season 2!
The Current is back for a second season! We hope you'll join us!
Hey friends, pastor Chris here from Living Water Church and I'm excited to share that we are bringing back our podcast that we call the Current. Some of you watched season one or listened to season one last year that we finished up around October November. Lots happened since November of last year, as I'm sure you've noticed around the world, including at our church, so we got busy with shelter season and with some big fall events, and so we decided to take a little break and wait until things settle down a little bit. And they have settled down just a little bit here, enough for us to begin working on this podcast again this season. I'm excited to have some really great guests. I've already recorded a few episodes with some people that I think people are going to really enjoy and connect with and really this podcast.
Speaker 0:If you haven't listened to this podcast before, what I'm trying to do on it is find some inspiration, find some hope and find some challenge to discipleship for our church and for anybody else who would care to listen in. You know there's so much bad news in the world and there's so much stuff going on both in the world and in the church that can really lead us to a sense of despair. Is there anything good left? Is anything good happening? We talked about this a little bit in one of our first episodes around moral injury, with Dr Brad Kelly talking about moral injury and how, when we participate or are deeply affected by systems that have sort of been exposed to be morally bankrupt, it can lead us to a sense of despair and to actual despair, and one of the ways that we can push down that despair is by remembering good things that are happening in the world and participating in them, and so part of the purpose of this podcast, I think, especially since that conversation, has been to highlight some of the really good and beautiful things that are happening in the world. Since I am a pastor and I have friends that are in ministry, since I went to a couple different universities and have friends in academia that are doing cool and interesting work, I just feel like I have access to people that not everybody does and people who aren't necessarily the best at self-promotion, and so you may not hear about them as much as you'll hear about, you know, other people who, like to, you know, take up all of the attention in the news, and so you know this is a chance for us to tell stories that don't get told very often, of people doing actually good and meaningful work that can hopefully inspire us as we seek to be disciples of Christ ourselves, can give us some hope for the world, a sense that we're not alone in the work, and just like that we'll learn about some of the different aspects.
Speaker 0:One of our first episodes is going to be on migration and migration justice, which isn't something we hit on too directly at Living Water all the time, although we definitely have immigration issues that are present in our neighborhood and in our work. But just talking about what it means to sort of push back against oppressive policies and systems and practices around immigration, that can maybe inspire us as we try to be a prophetic witness of God's love here in East Village around homelessness or other issues. So you know, I think there's going to be some fun discussions. There's going to be some deep discussions. We're going to talk about things that have little to do with East Village, san Diego, and we're going to talk about things that have a ton to do with East Village, san Diego.
Speaker 0:But I hope that this podcast will be interesting and fun and inspiring and that it will challenge us to understand the world more deeply and to recognize that all is not lost, that there is a remnant of faithful people out there doing the work of God, that we are not alone and that we can participate in the good works and hopefully we'll gain some discernment and wisdom as we try to do that well, especially in a world where the church has been compromised by Christian nationalism and all kinds of other things, in a world where it feels like the world could end in any number of ways in the next few you know bit here, where it feels like world wars are always looming and there's new technologies and there's climate issues and there's, you know, just a growing disparity between rich and poor.
Speaker 0:We need to find ways to connect with, to learn from and to be inspired by people who are doing good work to fight against the powers of evil, who are those lights shining in the darkness that the darkness has at least not yet overcome. I hope that's who we are at Living Water and, as we find those other little lights out there, talk to some of them and maybe revisit the book of Acts ourselves. Hopefully we can find inspiration, be filled with the Spirit and be powered on in our work and that's true for us, hopefully, whether we're at Living Water Church specifically or whether you're overhearing this listening in from somewhere else. So join us for season two I'm excited about it and let us know what you think. Join us in conversation along the way, make comments and ask questions and send and ask questions and send emails and whatever you want to do. Come talk to me and we'll hopefully have another great season of podcasting here. All right, we'll see you. See you out there, on uh, on wherever you get your podcasts.
