Menopause, Melanin & Aging Like A Queen
Episode 21 - Why I keep going, despite adversity.
Two weeks ago I recorded an episode called, Racism, Patriarchy and Menopause and then last week I recorded one called Why black women are so tired.
Surprisingly (NOT) they have had some of my lowest numbers because when you start calling out the blatant racism and white supremacy that fuels our businesses and lives, it makes a lot of people uncomfortable.
This is when you hear things like...”I am not racist”. I have black friends, family, children etc.
To quote Saira Rao (co-author of White Women); "You cabn’t fuck yourself out of racism"
If I haven’t said it before – we ALL suffer frtom white supremacy. Even white people! It affects relationships, starts wars, breaks up families. It is evil and this is what we mean when we say bring the ENTIRE system down.
For everyone who talks about equality and love for all, you can’t have that unless you speak up and help to dismantle the system that is keeping so many of us, oppressed.
Over this past week, (after losing my shit on SM), I have received some dm’s from well-meaning white women saying they would like to talk and understand more because “can’t we just focus on loving eachother?”
White women have a LOT of power. Just look at the election results.
Having said all of this....the topic for this podcast is why do I keep talking about this, despite the fear of adversity and possibly having a negative affect on my business.,
And right there, this should tell you a lot.
A black woman should not be “fearful” about speaking out against racism and oppression although people walk around this world saying things like freedom, unity and feminism.
If that were true, there should be no risk. But we know there is. THAT is the reality. THAT is white supremacy.
I even had a woman on my FB say this... "I for one applaud your willingness to put your “political “ views out there Sam… no matter the effect it has on your client base. It takes guts. I appreciate it."
My reply.... "My existence is political. There is no other way. I am not separate from my business".
Her reply: "True. All of our existence is. Just glad you speak it."
Mine: "Some way more than others which a lot of people neglect to remember."
And then she agreed. But you see, she also tried to align herself and her struggle (being a woman) to mine and I had to remind her that we are not equal.
Sure, I would love to be and she would probably say the same thing but unless you make a concerted effort to see it, acknowledge it and TAKE ACTION, most white women will continue to live in a worlds where they have blinders on and choose to say silent.
Silence IS violence. When you are silent, all you are saying is YOUR comfort is more important than tearing down the system that harms everyone.
nd that is the sad truith AND why I won’t stop talking even IF it affects my business because liberation for ALL is more important to me than renovating my kitchen or having the latest designer bag.
I KNOW. I sound dramatic. Like I am overly simplifying it.
But it is simple. NOT easy but simple.
