Gib, hello and welcome to another episode of the podcast. I'm Gib Gerard. We are so excited to bring you today some rapid fire intelligence, little bits of intelligence, little stories from the radio show that we get to bring to you in succession here on the podcast. I absolutely love it. So here, without further ado, is me and John Tesh, well, Gib, I just discovered that you and I are smarter than the average person. I doubt it. I knew you were, but wasn't sure about me. The test is if you're willing to change your mind. Oh, yeah. According to research from Harvard Business School, they found that a willingness to change your mind is a hallmark of a growth mindset, which is a key to success. Yeah. I mean, anytime that you're willing to take new data and re examine your thoughts, your philosophies, your you know, all of the all of your worldview, but with new data, that means that you are educated and you're willing to there's a basis for the thoughts that you have, as opposed to, as opposed to just it being on feeling. And I will, I will add to that, that what is the line? It's the sign of an educated mind to be able to hold to conflict, conflicting ideas in your in your head at once. That that that concept of being able to hold those conflicting ideas and compare them to each other, that in and of itself, is the sign of a of a smarter brain. So yes, being willing to change your mind is absolutely a smart Yeah. And the researchers at the Harvard Business School went on to say a growth mindset helps you see setbacks as temporary and not a reflection of your worth. Exactly. It's not, it's not, it's not about who you are. It's about what you can do and how you can grow well. Said this just in Gib the secret to workplace happiness is to remember what you love about your job. A study by the University of Alberta finding that encouraging employees to simply rethink their jobs was enough to drop absenteeism by 60% and turnover by 75% the researchers discovered that people who are able to find meaning and purpose in their work. Can see how they make a difference through that work. I mean, we work long hours every day, and every now and then, I have to remind myself, Oh, maybe there are people listening, and maybe this is helping me. It reminds you that what you're doing, you know, has has a greater purpose that's beyond you. It's beyond just making money. And look, this is good for any activity. You know, I talk about how I talk about this all the time on our coaching calls and on the air, I coach Little League, right? And when you lose a game, it really stinks to watch you. You know, to lose a game of Little League, but I I have to find the things that make it worth it, which is the incremental improvements that some of the kids are making. So any activity that you have, if you can just, if you can just put put that mindset into what you're doing, if it's your marriage, if it's parenting, whatever, the thing is, the more you can lean into that idea, the more fulfillment you'll find, and the more fulfillment you find, the more engagement you'll have with the work you're doing. Yeah, I think it was the great writer, John Maxwell, who wrote the book failing forward. Yeah, exactly what that is. So Gib, we've been talking about how great the Mediterranean diet is for decades on this radio show, and now we have another benefit to tell you about. It actually produces your stress. Oh, yeah. So journal Nutrition and Health found that people who ate a Mediterranean diet reported significantly less stress than people who ate a standard Western diet full of processed foods. That's it, and you're always talking about the inflammation from processed foods. So I'm sorry, real quickly, Mediterranean diet, fish, nuts, produce and beans. That's the thing. There's no processed Mediterranean food. That's why it's that's why it's such a great diet. That's why it's so anti inflammatory. It's one of the reasons why, if you first start a ketogenic diet, or a whole 30 diet, it's why all of these are so good for your overall inflammation. Is because all of those extra chemicals, the emulsifiers, the different oils, all the things that allow food to stay stable on the shelf for a really long time. You know that we have in our in our standard diet, where we're happy with standard Western diet, all this processed food that's laden with sodium and and all that other stuff well, that is inflaming in your system as your body digested. Those are all the byproducts of your digestion. Are inflammatory in your body. When you're having those kinds of processed foods, if you're eating whole foods, like you said, fish, nuts, olive oil, that kind of stuff, it is so good in terms of inflammation in your body. So yes, I totally live by that now. It reduces your stress. Yeah, it's awesome. Let's talk about scent, as in, smell. Lots of tests on this powerful motivator scent is and it can make you spend more money. So you should just be aware of this, and it's conversation starter, right? Gib as you know, some stores pipe in pleasing aromas, like Cinnabon. Oh, yeah. What you may not know is that the right scent can increase sales by as much as 50% that's a big number. Your sense of smell impacts your emotions, and the aromas that work best are vanilla, chocolate and cinnamon. Okay, so, you know, cake, right? Basically, you'll eat more cake. So, I mean, the Cinnabon knows what it's doing. But by the way, use this. Use this for your dating life. If, if people are more likely to buy something because they smell those things, you're the product, they're going to be more likely to buy you if you smell like vanilla, chocolate and cinnamon all at the same time, sure? Why not just just smell like cinnamon? My ears smell smell like chocolate. I'm not saying that you can go onto a restaurant wholesale site and buy Cinnabon air freshener, but you can candles, and then you can just spray it all over yourself before your next date. Win, win. We just changed the whole world of day. Oh my gosh, it's gonna be crazy out there. Baby Boom. So I could tell you folks that Gib family, all of them are readers. In fact, all three kids have Kindles, and from eight to 13 years old and read like crazy, which is great to see. And reading has come back now, real books and electronic books. And now there's another reading trend that's gaining popularity, which is buddy reading. It's a smaller version of a book club, kind of like a book club for two instead of getting together with a book club after you finish reading a book, you connect with each other during the reading process. And a lot of people do this remotely on Zoom. I mean, this is we used to just call this telling your friend about a book and seeing if they want to read it with you, right? What buddy reading? Whatever you want to call anything that gets people reading. And I, you know, I love the combination of an audio book and a written book at the same time. I'll go back and forth between the two. That's how I go through books and but anytime you can connect over ideas with somebody else, whether it's over zoom, whether it's buddy reading, it's it's good. I use a website called Good Reads, and oh yeah, I can see what my friends are reading, and then I can, I can write reviews. I can read my friends reviews like I know what some people I went to high school with read in the last three months. And it's so fun to be able to do that and to sort of feel like, oh, okay, I can see where this exchange of ideas is happening. I need to find somebody to talk to on Zoom though, because that sounds fun. Yeah, I use Goodreads a lot for great, great quotes, yeah? And it's a great place to get book recommendations. So there it is that, and that's buddy reading. So Gib, and I have told you a lot about how there's a great deal of loneliness in the world right now. It started or was exposed during COVID. And we also know from studies that you can damage your physical and mental health. But now, according to the journal Nature mental health, there is an easy way to feel better that doesn't cost a thing. So after tracking the movement of nearly 400 people, the researchers found that people who walked an hour a day at a speed of three miles an hour, they felt less lonely, even if they exercised alone. Oh yeah, people who walked indoors, like on a treadmill, got the same boost in well being. Look this when we talk about exercise is medicine, this is like one of 1000 studies that show that exercise is medicine for your body. So if you, I mean, we talk about how, if you live, if you know, I have an office in my house, and I spend a lot of time working in my office alone in my house, and if I could just get up and do a quick walk around the neighborhood, if I just get my steps in for the day, it totally changes my mood before, after, during work. This is, this is a secret life hack. You want to feel better you and by the way, exercise is actually better than most anti prescription antidepressants in terms of its efficacy. Dancing, by the way, is the most effective treatment for depression, but it's so amazing. But just getting your steps in, guys, getting your steps in, is absolutely enough to fix most of your loneliness problems. Gib, I just read this statistic, and I was, I was shocked. It was the what is that? What is the top magazine in circulation? And people guessed, people us, weekly Time Magazine, Rolling Stone, whatever. So here are officially the top three magazines in circulation right now. The two largest are AARP, the magazine and the AARP bulletin. For those of you who don't know, it's those are retired people. The American Association for retired first, yeah, people over over 65 basically read that. So maybe, like, look, I, I believe it, I believe it. I It's super useful. But then nobody in my household is over the age of 50, and I get AARP magazine sent to me. So I'm wondering if they're juicing the numbers a little bit by just sending it to everybody. Yeah, or they know that you're gonna get old eventually. It's true. That's true. The nation's third largest magazine by print circulation is Costco connection. I bet you get that. I also get that. And I read that cover to cover. It sends out to its members every month. More than 15 million copies are printed. An extra 300,000 are picked up while people are in stores. Wow. By the way, if you want some ideas for Christmas shopping, if you want some ideas for how to redecorate your your patio with new furniture, the Costco connection is the way to go. I read it cover to cover, and you know that your mom and I go on a date at Costco. We just walked the aisles. It's the best. All right, from our dating and relationship files. Let's see what you think give Gerard here the top three characteristics women wanted a partner. I guess I should have asked your wife and my wife. According to the journal evolutionary psychology science, who studied this, number one is faithfulness, more than eight out of 10 women rated that as the most attractive quality. Yes, it's a weird combination, though. They want to feel like you're in demand, but that you're that you're fully theirs. That's, yeah, it's a. We it's a weird little overlap there. But yes, the second most important characteristic demand is dependability. 75% of women want men who will do what they say they will, from texting to picking up milk on the way home. So so far, these are two things that I think everybody kind of wants in a partner, right? You want to want them to be faithful and dependable. I get that, yeah. Also, women want a man who is kind, because if you treat others with kindness, you most likely treat your partner kindly too. So why is it that women date men who are bad boys? It's because they think they can fix them. Oh, that's it. They think that, they think that they can make him kind only for her. That's that's the psychology of that. And it goes it's for everybody, right? We all think, oh, that person seems rebellious. I feel like, I feel like I can, I can change her. I absolutely mentally. We all, we all go into and and you know, when my wife hears this, or your wife thinking that they're just going to send us a text saying, What do you know about what women think fair there? I have no idea it is fair. John touch with Gib Gerard, and we often on this program, and also on our coaching programs, which you can find@tesh.com we talk about all the different workouts that are going to add years longevity to your life, absolutely. And the one that's been coming up lately is stretching. And there are a bunch of stretching apps that have been released. The first thing we do when we're stressed is our body really clenches up. So Jamie long vol is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist at Brown, and she says stretching is an effective strategy for stress relief, because when you lengthen your muscles, you relieve tension. Yes, you, I mean, it's you're literally relieving tension. So any kind of stretch that wherever you're you're tight. I carry a lot of tightness in my in my back, my neck, my jaw, but I have a secret, because I'm terrible at stretching. I have a I have a mat, oh no, a bunch of needles on it. It's like, yeah, it's like, it's like a bed of nails. It's exactly what it's like. And by, by, by laying on it, it, it relieves it like it stresses my muscles out to the point where it finally exhausts and it relieves all of the tension. It's unbelievable. So I love it. I started stretching it again because I was feeling tied up. I got I re energized my rollerball. That roller thing rolled up. My amazing, oh, yeah, it's so good. Yeah, because it unhuntches your back, you can just get a, you get a lacrosse ball and just lay on it. And it's a little cheaper, but yeah, this thing is long and round. It's really good. Well, stretching anyway. You want to feel better about everything. Just good stretch. Well, it's official, we are really interested in desperate for a laugh every day, which is why ticket sales for in person comedy shows are surging right now. Oh, yeah. So last year, Gib nearly $1 billion worth of tickets were sold for live comedy shows. I get it. Part of the increase is due to comedians having more visibility on social media at streaming platforms and Netflix, they had this thing called Netflix is a joke, has invested heavily in its streaming comedy shows. And I've seen this where, where unknown comedians like, well, like somebody like Nate bargain just blew up on YouTube, yeah, and now it's stadiums. Yes, it look if you're, if you're an in demand comic, and you can go viral just a couple of times if your bits start to get a little bit of attention, all of a sudden you're hosting Saturday online, yeah, all of a sudden you're doing arenas. It's totally different. There's no comedy. Is one of those places where there's very few gatekeepers. So if you're running into gatekeepers in Los Angeles, well, guess what? Go to, you know, go to Scottsdale and go to the improv in Scottsdale, go to Denver and get stage time, and then the money's the same. Yeah, that's why so many comedians are like, I'm not they're quitting television shows just to go on the road because, because so many people are much more interested in going and seeing them live than they are watching TV shows. So true. It's so true. Live comedy huge right now. That's it for the show today. Thank you guys so much for listening.
