Gib, hello and welcome to another episode of the podcast. I'm Gib Gerard here with one of my favorite things that we do, and I know I say that all the time, our special intelligence to go episode of the show. This is where we take the clips of John and myself on the radio show from this week. We chop them up and give you just that stuff, just the stuff we talk about on the air. None of the music, none of the other stuff, just the two of us talking. So I'll happen to like this. I hope that you enjoy it. I'm gonna stop talking now and let the other version of me do the talking. So here is me and John Tesh, all right, Gib, from our dating and relationship files, a Pew survey of dating apps now reveals that a full 25% of millennials have gone on a first date at a grocery store. Oh, yeah. You know, in Los Angeles, there used to be a place. I can't think of the name of it, but on Friday nights they played like, like, really loud disco music and people, and they changed the lighting and everything. And that's when people went on dates using shopping carts. And just shopping carts had different lights on them, and if one of the lights was on, it meant they were available. That is, first of all, that's amazing. And I like that grocery stores are figuring stuff like this out. I have started to see grocery stores with bars in them, with grocery stores with whole prepared food sections, so that you could actually eat while you're there. And it absolutely sounds like a great place for a date. It's also lets you know so many details about the person you're on a date with, yeah, and also, worst case scenario, it's a terrible date. You've got your grocery shopping done, right? So it's like a win, win. And at this point, like I know you have this experience at this point in my relationship, I view going to the grocery store as a date. It is a very intimate time, even now. So I know you and your wife, you guys go to Costco. We just, we don't have a list. We just walk up and down the aisles together. Very romantic. This is what this look first date, 100th date. This is a great date idea. I love it. Hey, Gib, check this out. We now know that showering during the work day is helping employees become more productive and more creative. So four businesses, a restaurant and architectural firm, an advertising agency and a clothing company, took part in a two month study, and employees who took a shower break showed improvement across a huge range of areas, from mood to productivity. So now you have to install showers in the in the office. I mean, it seems like it's worth it. You know what? One One less toilet stall, one more shower stall, and there you go. Look, we know of a lot we have reported on, on the benefits of showering to improve creativity before we've talked about one particularly prolific writer in Aaron Sorkin, who, you know, obviously has written and created multiple television shows and movies, and he showers when he's writing. He showers like five, six times a day, yeah. So trying to unlock his creative juices, right? So there's something to this. So absolutely, if you have like, a nice shower environment, why wouldn't you want your your creative executives or your creative team to be taking that time they can't stare at screens. It puts your brain into this sort of white noise idling mode. That's really great for pulling random ideas together. I love it. And the energy requirements are a lot less than AI. So why not? That makes a lot of sense. You know, Gib, whenever we're talking about pets. Intelligence for your pets, especially on Facebook, we get a lot of questions about fish tanks. And so here's a fish tank tip. See what you think. If you have one, or your kid or grandkid wants a fish, you should know this. You actually need six of them. What I had no idea schools of fish are happier than solo fish, and fish that hang out together and socialize are more likely to thrive. You just make sure they're all the same kind of fish. Otherwise, you have David Attenborough in your house narrating what's going on. Large fish has now swallowed all of the schools. Fish also do better in long and wide Aquarians and give plenty of space to some terrible invitation. So here are the here are the six fish you should get tetras, rasboras or danios. I haven't heard of any of them, except for tetras. Okay. Also be careful you don't get like beta fighting fish, because then you will have you'll have Fight Club, you'll have fish Fight Club. And what we're trying to do is teach the kid how to take care of something. You know, animal husbandry is what we're trying to teach, not fish Fight Club, not grief, yeah. So, you know, choose those three fish, the tetras, the risboros or the danios. Remember, you need six of them because schools of fish. Where's the tiny gold fish? Moves towards the corner? Oh, the horror. All right, intelligent people, if your day started off badly or it's going down the tubes, you can turn it around. And Gib Gerard is going to tell us how all right. Clinical Psychologist Susan Albers from the Cleveland Clinic says you should try making a sensory change. So take a hot shower, change your clothes, or light a scented candle. Dr Albers says different smells texture. And temperatures will help you reset by diverting your attention. We really are just simple creatures, aren't we? I know it doesn't really require much to make us change our mindset. That's why everybody's going into saunas and cold plunges and everything, fantastic. Well, you want to do a hard reset. Go from a cold plunge into a into a hot tub, back into a cold plunge, back into a hot tub. Do that a few times into the hospital. Yeah, you do that a few times, pending, you know, a cardiologist approval. You do that a few times, you're gonna feel fantastic, like the guys on Sunday night, I got a fuller Sasha's lodging my right aorta, but, but no, this is, look, this is good advice. If you, if you would like to reset your day, it's like, just nothing's going your way. Nothing's coming up you know, nothing's coming up roses. Go for a long walk, exercise a little bit, take a shower, light a candle, do something that changes the all of the little sensory inputs that you have, you will feel like it's a new day, and you'll be able to approach it with a different amount of intensity. And hopefully that really helps your day out, or just walk into an Uber car, those things always smell great. Smell the old bed bath and beyond a business. What's the what's the other one? The Bath and Body Works. Walk in there. Don't you know it's it's easy to reach for an energy drink when you're feeling sluggish, or for me, it's like five shots of espresso. But a better option now is the Italian energy drink. Exactly. Better option is taking the stairs, apparently, according to the Journal of Physiology and behavior, spending 10 minutes going up and down stairs restores energy more effectively than getting 50 milligrams of caffeine, which is roughly the amount in a can of soda. That's a lot. Scientists say the quick burst of exercise going up and down stairs wakes up the brain and boosts alertness. Absolutely. It really does look you move your body, eat an apple. There are so many things you can do before you go to caffeine. And keep in mind, look, I say this as somebody who absolutely loves caffeine. I drink coffee every single day. I love it. I drink tea that's caffeinated. I like all of it. But what caffeine does is it masks the feeling of being tired. It actually doesn't increase your alertness. There are other benefits to caffeine. Again, I use it, I have it, but there is nothing that matches getting your blood pumping and doing a little bit of physical activity in order to wake yourself up. That's why you see people jumping up and down and slapping themselves and all that stuff. You just do the stairs for 10 minutes so you don't look like an idiot, and then the rest of the time you have this in your back pocket. The other thing you could do is five knee push ups real quick. Oh yeah, that's you can't find any stairs, oh yeah. Or squats. Just do body weight squats. So many squats are even better. From our health and wellness files, Gib experts say if you can't get outside for a brisk walk, there is something that works just as well to improve your mood. You sing along with your favorite songs on the radio, oh yeah. The Journal of the American Medical Association says it works just as well as a brisk walk on your mood and sluggishness, because listening to music and singing along prompts your nervous system to release hormones. It lifts your spirits, reduces stiffness and provides an energy boost, especially if those songs were happening during the halcyon days about teen years, you will never have songs that you love as much as you did. Remember that first time you got, you got your license, you got in the car for the first time, and left the house, and you were, you were just, you were driving to your friend's house, and whatever song, what song was it for you? Let's see, I was probably at the time. It's probably Red Hot Chili Peppers. Chili peppers and Nirvana a lot. So if I would put in Nirvana's in utero, and then drive to my buddy's house, and I can still hear those songs and what they make me feel. I also got really into the Steve Miller band at that point. So like, big old jet airliner driving home from my girlfriend's house in high school, that's these are all the things that I could listen to now and just scream at the radio. I love it. Yeah, mine was king. Crimson is 21st Century schizoid. Man, 21st Century skid side. Man, we're not gonna play that boy, Gib. We know this to be true, just sort of anecdotally, empirically and scientifically, all that stuff, a recent study revealing now that the way we walk impacts our mood. Oh yeah. And, you know, it's interesting, because I gone to the gym and did something stupid, and so, you know, I pull the muscles, you know, in my glute, and so my gait is is off. And even if I don't have pain, I'm worn out. Oh yeah, because it's just a it's not, it's not the right way to be, to be walking. And people who walk with a slouch, they end up being depressed. Right? All of your compensatory muscles, meaning the muscles that you use when your gait is off, to to rebalance yourself, those are all going to get strained. You are going to if you walk like a depressed person hunched over and said, your body will it will be. Will act depressed. You can't help it. This is why all of these other tricks that we teach you work is stand up with your back straight, arms on your hips like Superman, and your brain will think you are a confident superhero. If you stand straight, you will your brain will think you have authority. This is you can also change your clothes if you wear a. Fitted, appropriate clothing for, you know, high society and like high finance, right? You're wearing suits and tuxedos, you will act like somebody who needs to wear a suit and tuxedo. If you're wearing athleisure wear all the time, you will be slouched and and seen and feel kind of lazy. So these, these little tricks that we have really work both directions. If you act depressed, you'll be depressed. If you act happy, you'll be happy. And even when we're on stage, when we're wearing a suit, we play Better. Play Better. You're more present. Gib, I always thought this to be true in my family. We now know from recent study that being car incompatible can break your relationship. One in four people consider themselves car incompatible with their spouses or long term partners, and 10% of men consider it a deal breaker if they aren't car compatible, what does it mean one person is adjusting mirrors and seats while driving and don't switch them back. Drives my wife crazy, leaving trash in a shared car or switching the radio show. Couples get into big arguments over this 100% look also how clean you keep your car, how much time, energy, money you invest in your car. For some people, a car is is an extension of themselves, and they want it to be clean. They want to have a fancy car. For other people, cars are a tool, and it really depends how you view it and how you treat each other around that is really going to have a big impact on the health of your relationship. By the way. This is not just about cars. This is about pets. This is about things in your home. All of that starts to add up. You've got to these are, these are the compatibility issues. These are just the places where we see the incompatibility issues come to life. And you know, the car is demonstrative of several things, again, cleanliness, smell, importance of keeping the outside with a good projection to the world. What radio stations you listen to? All of that, it all adds up. I agree. I love this. Gib, it's time to trust our gut. According to a study from Tel Aviv University, people who relied on their intuition to make stock market picks, for example, chose the best options for the highest returns 90% of the time. And that backs up research in the Journal of Psychology and marketing, which says our gut instinct is usually right, yep. And people who make gut decisions typically make them faster. This also works with people you know, meeting people it does look your brain is is a computer that has the sum total of all of your lived experience available to it. I mean, some of us have better memories than others, but in real, like in reality, all of the things that you've learned, stove, hot, you know this, this surface smooth, all of those, like little things that you picked up as a toddler. That person's smile. There's something wrong with it. That person's smile is good, all of that. And you know, 1000s of years of human tradition are all amalgamated into your brain in each decision that you make on a day to day basis. And when that means is when you have a gut reaction, it is your brain giving you a warning sign based on the sum total of all of those experiences. I don't like the way that person is treating me, there's something about them that's wrong, and then you turn out to be right. It's not You're not psychic. What you have is all of this learned experience that is actually screaming at you from the middle of your brain to the outer parts of your brain, hey, there's something wrong here. And then it's up to you to figure out if that's true or not. But this is absolutely true. It is not the gut instinct. Is not magic. It is the sum total of your experience. Yeah. And now there's data supporting this from Tel Aviv University and also that journal psychology and marketing, trust your gut. All right, my friends, here we go with an elixir for feeling down in the dumps or if you're even battling depression. Grab, according to Harvard research, grab an orange, women in a study who ate one orange a day had a full 20% lower risk of depression. It works because oranges give people higher levels of a certain gut bacteria that increases levels of the mood, lifting brain chemicals serotonin and dopamine. I would have thought it was because of the citrus smell, but now it's like all the way into the gut bacteria, which is known as our second brain Yep. So look, I want to make sure something's really clear. This is not a license to go have an extra Mimosa because it's got orange juice in it. This is not a license to even have orange juice at all. This is about the whole oranges, right? When you have whole fruit, you get all of the fiber that we're talking about here that helps boost gut bacteria. And citrus fruit in season is phenomenally good for you, for all of the reasons that we just talked about, from you know, gut bacteria, mood, all of those things, but also it also helps ward off scurvy. So if you plan on being on a ship for a while, bring some oranges. Oh my gosh, scurvy. Thank you. Next you'll be talking about rickets, rickets, croup, scurvy. That's all important. I don't want any of that stuff coming back. That's it for the show today. Thank you guys so much for listening. If you like the show, please rate comment and subscribe on Apple podcast.
