As a young adult, Aaliyah navigates the sometime fine boundary of being a victim and victor, and demonstrates that achievement is frequently accompanied by hardships and sacrifice. Aaliyah recognizes that many people share a background with Aaliyah: foster care, PTSD or other mental health issues associated with trauma, frequently experience adverse financial outcomes and/or poverty.
