PRAY IT OFF- 3 STEPS TO PRAY INSTEAD OF EATING YOUR EMOTIONS

Lindy Schlabach - Christian Mindset & Weight Loss Coach Season 1 Episode 81

I've struggled with emotional eating for over 15 years, the temptation still arises at times. I'm learning to pray through them and have found that asking ONE question is helping me overcome my need to emotionally eat.

Lord, help me glorify You with my choices.

Ask and it will be given to you.

He wants to lead you, but you have to ask for help then have the courage to walk in Holy Spirit obedience when He calls.

Here are 3 things to do when you feel the pull to the pantry:

1. Create a prayer plan for emotional triggers.

2. Replace snacking with a spiritual activity.

3. Keep a Victory Journal with your breakthroughs!

You are WORTH this work! I'd love to connect with you and hear your prayer plan! Find me on Insta or FB at @her_weightlossmindset & Her Weight Loss Mindset!

What if one question could change your entire thought process around food and emotional eating?

Hey there, friend.

Today, I'm going to challenge you to add one question to your morning routine.

Listen, I know the struggle to eat your feelings.

Happy, sad, good, and bad, I still struggle with these.

But this one question is helping me change my thought process around food.

And when the moment hits where I want to snack or eat something, or my taste buds are calling, I'm learning to incorporate this one question.

Are you ready?

Here we go.

Are you sick of trying diet after diet and not losing weight?

Are you tired of doubting your ability to actually lose weight in a healthy way?

Do you wish you could find a laid out for you plan that will help you stay accountable to your goals?

Hey, friends, I'm Lindy Schlabach, Christian Fitness & Nutrition Coach.

I gained 100 pounds in my late 20s and struggled for years to get it off.

So grab your pre-workout and let's chat.

Did you know that I have a free community of busy, God-fearing women just like you who want to lose weight according to God's word and live a life of balance and peace?

It's true.

I share weekly encouragement, weight loss tips, meal planning help, and so much more.

Listen, emotional eating has been a struggle of mine for over 15 years.

After my grandpa passed away in 2008, I was already depressed from gaining 50 pounds and double depression and anxiety had me eating like literally I would go to the Dollar General every Sunday.

Like this was my like quote unquote treat.

And I would get a bag of Lay's cheddar and sour cream potato chips.

And they had this chip dip there.

And every Sunday I would literally eat like pretty much an entire bag, sometimes an entire bag of those stupid chips.

Like I see them in the grocery store.

My husband used to love to eat them before we realized that they have dyes in them.

And it would like give me PTSD flashbacks.

I would grab a pint of ice cream and I would eat and I would feel sorry for myself.

And I would eat and I would sit on the couch and I would be hating myself like stop eating.

Like I remember these times where I'd be sitting there like stop eating this.

Like you don't even feel good.

You're not even hungry.

Like stop eating.

But I was 100 pounds overweight.

I didn't even recognize that puffy face looking back at me in the mirror.

I remember one day I was shopping with my mom and she looked at me and I know that she didn't mean to hurt my feelings.

But all these years later, like I still remember her looking at me saying, I never thought that you would be this big.

I wish I talked to God back then, but I felt like I had disappointed him and let him down.

So I just stayed stuck in this cycle.

And I still battle with that cycle sometimes today.

But what if we could implant one question in our brain that would help us heal from emotional eating trauma?

Here are a couple.

I want you to pick one and I want you to write it down, put it in your journal, write it on your mirror.

Every day, I want you to ask yourself one of these questions.

Lord, what do I need right now?

With my clients that I have worked with over the past 8 plus years, the one thing that we have always said is, Lord, give me what I need.

Another thing you can say, another prayer, you can say, Father, help me honor you with my next choice.

Or maybe it's in the morning and you're in your prayer time, you can say, Lord, lead me in my meal planning today.

Lord, help me to glorify you with my choices.

So pick one question that is going to become the cornerstone for your eating journey and just let that be the prayer that you pray.

You remember back in the 90s, early 2000s, you had the WWJD bracelets?

I wish we could bring that back and we could wear a bracelet on our wrist every day that says, what would Jesus do?

WWJE, what would Jesus eat?

Do any of those stick out to you?

Will you add one of them to your daily prayer?

Or maybe you could say in the morning, Lord, lead me in my meal planning today.

And then at lunchtime, when your friend brings in donuts to work, you can say, Father, help me honor you with my next choice.

Or Lord, give me what I need.

You don't need to add all of these, but I want you to pick one.

Lord, help me honor you with my next choice.

This is my prayer.

Lead me, Lord, glorify me.

Heal my broken, hungry heart and give me the only thing that can truly satisfy me, which is you.

We're not just praying this once in the morning and then hoping he's just gonna, you know, remind us every choice we make.

Let this be through your day.

Let this be the thought when you wake up in the night.

Lord, give me what I need.

This is going to become not only the prayer for your emotional eating struggles, but when you want to work, implement a workout routine, when you've built this stuck mindset about exercise or a relationship or a job.

Lord, give me what I need.

Because when we start to tap into the Holy Spirit power in our lives, he becomes the still small voice and we can drown out the lies.

The lies are gonna come.

The thoughts are gonna come.

The temptation is going to come.

He says, in this world you will have trouble, but take heart, I've overcome the world.

He's overcome your eating habits.

He's overcome your fear.

He's overcome your trauma.

But until we learn to tap in to his power and that fruit of self-control, we're going to be stuck in an endless cycle of defeat.

Why do we do this?

Matthew 4, 4 says that man shall not live on bread alone, but every word that comes from the mouth of God.

We pray and ask him, Lord, give me what I need, because we were not designed to do this life alone.

We're not designed to heal alone or strive and try.

We are called to seek the Holy Spirit, die to self, and walk in the ways of the Most High.

Philippians 4, 6 to 7 says, do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Don't be anxious about your eating journey, your emotional eating journey, in every situation with prayer and petition.

Thank you, Father, for this day.

Thank you for the opportunity to be surrounded by food, and a full pantry, and a full refrigerator.

Father, I am grateful for the blessings that you have bestowed upon me.

Give me Holy Spirit conviction and self-control to eat according to your will, to honor you with my choices.

Lord, what do I need right now?

Father, give me what I need.

Help me honor you with my next choice.

Lead me, Lord, to my meal planning today.

Write these down.

Maybe they're going to change in different seasons of your life.

Repeat them.

Ask him, Lord, which of these prayers is going to help me most through the day, and let the Holy Spirit become the voice in your head.

He is going to quiet the lies that tell you that sugar is going to taste good, that wine every night is deserved to relax.

He'll quiet the lie that says, Oh, I'll try again tomorrow, or me eating this cookie isn't going to hurt anyone.

Jesus Christ who died on a cross, if he is your personal Savior, he lives inside of you.

He says, honor your body.

Honor me with your body.

Honor me with your choices.

So I want to give you three things that you can do when you start to feel that pull to eat your feelings.

I want you to create a prayer plan for those emotional triggers.

Use some of these above or you can create your own.

But I find that a quick phrase is best.

It's easy, it flows, and as you repeat it over and over, it will become so natural, pretty soon you won't even notice the cupcakes that's been taunting you all night.

Because that Lord gave me what I need, He's actually going to give you what you need.

Number two, replace snacking with a spiritual activity.

Turn on some worship music.

Every morning when the baby gets up, I say, Alexa, play Spotify.

And we like Jam to Jesus music all day.

Or get your Bible out and start reading.

When you feel the need to snack and you're not hungry, get up and move.

Go outside, go for a walk, walk around your house.

Slap your knees, call a friend.

Sit down, write some handwritten letters to someone that you've been thinking about.

Get your mind right so you can get your body right.

Not for vanity's sake, but because God, the creator of the universe, lives in there and He cares how you speak to yourself.

He cares how you love yourself.

He cares how you feed yourself.

The third thing, keep a victory journal to track your breakthroughs and celebrate your wins.

Not food, right?

We're not celebrating with food.

But celebrate with a new pair of shoes or a walk around the block or coffee date with a friend.

There is no win that is too small.

Celebrate them.

Tell someone.

Find a cheerleader.

Find an accountability partner.

This is what we do in the Biblical Weight Loss Framework.

We celebrate the wins of our people together in our group coaching calls on Monday nights because accountability is key.

The word says, where two or more are gathered in his name, there he will be.

Find someone to help keep you accountable.

And let's start to recognize why these emotional triggers are happening so that we can pray through them, heal through them, forgive if necessary through them, and create specific tactical steps to help you reach your Biblical Weight Loss goals.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for this day.

We thank you for every person out there who is hearing this message.

We pray for Holy Spirit anointing over their bodies, over their choices, over their minds.

Lord, fill us with your Holy Spirit today and let us learn to discern your voice over all the lies of the enemy.

Thank you for the fruit of self-control and gentleness and kindness and faithfulness, and love and joy and peace and patience and all of those fruits that we get to extend to others, but also to ourselves.

Thank you for the gift of food and the blessing that it is to fuel our bodies, Lord, and let us stop giving food so much power over our lives.

We thank you for the opportunity to create new choices and new mindsets every day, because we're always dying to self.

We thank you, Lord, that you never leave us and that you never forsake us.

We ask these things in your precious and holy name.

Amen.
