And now we present episode number 29. Oh, so excited about this. This is the Teflon episode. So excited I started choking on my water episode. So excited, I started choking on my water.

So the question on the internet if nothing sticks to Teflon, what makes Teflon stick to the pan? I thought I knew this one pretty well. Teflon is applied at a super high temperature which, during proper use, will not be reached by home and commercial kitchens, and at that higher temperature the Teflon will stick to the pan. It actually goes a little bit more like this and, as an aside, kinetic Chemicals registered the Teflon trademark in 1945. And while Teflon is known for the non-stick properties, it does form a strong bond with the surface of the pan.

And here's how it works. First they sandblast the pan to create a lot of micro-scratches on the surface. Then they spray on a coat of Teflon primer. This primer, like most primers, is thin, enabling a high heat causing the Teflon to solidify and get a reasonably secure mechanical grip. Next you spray on a finish coat and bake. That Teflon finish coat will stick to the Teflon primer coat, just fine, but it's not going to stick to your foods. Yay, teflon, but if you're cooking on high heat etc in your home kitchen, yes, you can degrade the Teflon coating, making it worthless as a non-stick pan. So Scotty Don't X says don't do that, be good to your cooking utensils and they'll try not to poison you, I hope.
