Be Still And Notice: A Yoga Podcast
Episode 6: 10 minute So Hum Mantra Guided Meditation
This episode is the first of a series of guided meditations to try in your personal practice.
This beautiful So Hum mantra meditation is a powerful way to ground and calm, body, mind and spirit.
So Hum literally means "I Am" and I like to think of it as a beautiful expression of our existence in the here and now. Its an exclamation of our "being-ness" and a celebration of the cosmic consciousness. This ancient and simple mantra has the power to elevate and transform, bringing us right into the present moment.
So get yourself nice and warm and in a comfortable seated position, and lets begin.
PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT DRIVE WHILST PRACTISING THIS MEDITATION

Welcome to Be Still and Notice, a yoga podcast. Join me, your host, yoga and meditation instructor Helen Taylor, to dive deeply into the vast ocean of wisdom that is yoga. Explore with me how these ancient practices can help heal and elevate us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually in an ultra-modern world. Together we'll deepen our practice, explore our connection to divinity and our own inner landscapes with the help of special guests, guided meditations, how-tos and oh so much more. Yoga has the incredible power to change your life on every level and it all begins with stillness. Now let's begin. Hi everyone and welcome, welcome to Be Still and Notice, a yoga podcast. This is a guided meditation episode, so I'll be guiding you through a really beautiful, simple mantra meditation that you can do any time, day or night, to start your day feeling To end your day or any time you need to press pause and reset mind, body and spirit. So today we're going to be practicing a So Hum mantra meditation. And this is a really beautiful mantra meditation that I do very regularly. I find it to be really powerful and really beautiful. So Hum literally means I am. It's a very beautiful expression of our existence in the here and the now. It works really well to draw us into the present moment and to make us really aware of our existence, our sense of beingness, our sense of consciousness, here, now, in this moment. So it can be a really powerful way if you're feeling anxious or worried to draw you into the neutral mind, the present moment. So to prepare for this meditation practice, you don't need any special equipment. Just make sure you feel nice and comfortable in an upright position. You can be on a chair, on your bed, on the sofa. Just make sure you feel comfortable and easy. And I will sound a bell at the end of our practice so you know when it's time for us to finish. So get yourself nice and warm and comfortable, maybe take a drink of water and let's get started. Welcome to your Sohum Mantra Meditation. Take a moment to sit comfortably and gently close the eyes. When you're ready, take a slow, deep breath in through the nose, letting the belly expand. And take a long exhale out through the mouth. Do that twice more at your own pace, deep belly breath in. Long exhale out through the mouth. One more time at your own pace, deep belly breath in. Long exhale out through the mouth. And then gently allow your breath to settle in to its natural rhythm. Take a moment to gently lift the heart and relax the shoulders down away from the ears as you breathe. The bottom half of your body is heavy and relaxed. like to imagine a golden thread gently drawing the crown of the head up towards the ceiling and beyond. Now gently begin to draw your awareness to your breath. Gently watching the breath as it flows in and out of the nose or the mouth. When you're ready, we're going to repeat so silently in the mind as we inhale and hum as we exhale. Finding a gentle rhythm with your own breath, so as you inhale, hum as you exhale. Anytime your mind begins to wander, Just gently bring it back to the mantra. So. Hum. So. Continuing to gently repeat so as you inhale silently in the mind, hum as you exhale. Anytime your mind begins to wander, just gently bring it back to the mantra. So, hum. So, hum. So as you inhale, hum as you exhale. slowly begin to release the mantra but keep the eyes closed and the body still for a few more moments be still and notice notice your mind's activity Notice the breath. Notice any emotion you might be experiencing in this moment. you're ready. Take a nice slow deep belly breath in through the nose and exhale out through the mouth. Then gently begin to maybe wiggle your fingers. Take any gentle intuitive stretches you feel your body needs in this moment. And whenever you're ready, gently begin to open the eyes and come back into the room. Thank you so much for listening to the Be Still and Notice podcast.
