Be Still And Notice: A Yoga Podcast
Episode 11: 10 minute Guided Mantra Meditation: Aham Brahmasmi
In this episode I guide you through a lovely mantra based meditation practice.
"Aham Brahmasmi" basicaly translates as "I am the universe" " Or I am universal consciousness."
This mantra comes from the Advaita Vedanta tradition, and is one of four important mantras from the Mahavakyas within the ancient scriptures of the Upanishads. Without getting too academic, you can think of Brahman as the ultimate universal consciousness, and the Atman or seer as the self. This mantra is an invitation to explore the concept that both Brahman and Atman are one and the same. Its a beautiful and scared exclamation of your oneness with everything, whatever that might mean for you.
I really hope you enjoy this guided meditation, so sit back, get comfortable and lets begin.

Welcome to Be Still and Notice, a yoga podcast. Join me, your host, yoga and meditation instructor Helen Taylor, to dive deeply into the vast ocean of wisdom that is yoga. Explore with me how these ancient practices can help heal and elevate us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually in an ultra-modern world. Together we'll deepen our practice, explore our connection to divinity and our own inner landscapes with the help of special guests, guided meditations, how-tos and oh so much more. Yoga has the incredible power to change your life on every level and it all begins with stillness. Now let's begin. Aham Brahmasmi Aham Brahmasmi Aham meaning I am. Brahma is the ultimate reality. In yoga, Brahman is the one universal consciousness. So when we recite the mantra, Aham Brahmasmi, we're literally saying, I am one with the universe. We're identifying our true self, the seer or the atman, with universal consciousness or Brahman. It's basically a lovely exclamation of your oneness with the universe. For me, this is a really powerful mantra that can really help us to feel that sense of unity, to come away from separation, to help dissolve the ego and and to become more self-realized. So I really hope you enjoy this practice and let's get started. So to prepare for this meditation practice, I invite you to come into a comfortable seat of your choice. You can sit in a chair with your back against the wall or even sitting upright in bed. Make sure you feel nice and warm and comfort is key. Maybe grab a glass of water, put your phone away, definitely on silent. And whenever you're ready, we can begin. Take a moment to sit comfortably and gently close the eyes. When you're ready, take a slow, deep breath in through the nose, letting the belly expand and take a long exhale out through the mouth. Do that twice more at your own pace. Deep belly breath in. Long exhale out through the mouth. One more time at your own pace. Deep belly breath in. Long exhale out through the mouth. And then gently allow your breath to settle in to its natural rhythm. Take a moment to gently lift the heart and relax the shoulders down away from the ears as you breathe. The bottom half of your body is heavy and relaxed. You might like to imagine a golden thread gently drawing the crown of the head up towards the ceiling and beyond. Now gently begin to draw your awareness to your breath. Gently watching the breath as it flows in and out of the nose and the mouth. And whenever you're ready, we're going to begin repeating the mantra, Aham Brahmasmi. Aham Brahmasmi, silently in the mind. I invite you to imagine that this mantra is repeating itself from somewhere deep within your consciousness and your understanding. Find a gentle rhythm with your own breath as you continue to silently repeat the mantra. Anytime your mind begins to wander, just gently bring it back to the mantra. Any time your mind begins to wander, just gently bring it back to the mantra. Aham Brahmasmi. Aham Brahmasmi. slowly begin to release the mantra but keep the eyes closed and the body still for a few more moments be still and notice notice your mind's activity Notice the breath. Notice any emotion you might be experiencing in this moment. you're ready, take a nice slow deep belly breath in through the nose and exhale out through the mouth then gently begin to maybe wiggle your fingers take any gentle intuitive stretches you feel your body needs in this moment And whenever you're ready, gently begin to open the eyes and come back into the room.
