Join us on Coached, a podcast where some of the world's top athletes, coaches and performance experts come together to share their stories, insights and secrets to what has made them successful in their own right. Think of this as a locker room chat unfiltered, raw and real. We dive deep into all things athletic performance, wellness, science and sporting culture and sporting culture. Hear from those who have played, coached and built their way to the top with athletes from the field, coaches and medical in the performance setting, or owners, managers and brands in the front office, while also getting an insider's view on my own personal experiences in this high-performance world. If you're passionate about sports, curious about the minds of champion athletes or looking for information and inspiration on your own journey, coach is the place for you. Welcome back to another episode of Brain Dump. Apologies for not getting episode recorded. Whilst over in the UK I didn't end up taking my podcast kit just purely based on a luggage restriction, so I didn't think that through beforehand. So I'm back, uh, with some key takeaways from the uk and the sportsmith event in general. First of all, massive shout out to rob pacey and the entire sportsmith team uh, everyone that was there. In regards to the staff on sportsmith to the presenters uh, fantastic. It was a great two days at Etihad Stadium, which is the home of Manchester City, in the EPL, Fantastic location, and I thought here would be a great place to just drop down. I had pages and pages, but maybe five to six of what I thought were my key takeaways, without any extra context, except for probably a couple of key sentences around what they are and what they mean. So the first one is in regards to our hip and groin, the contralateral side and the role of what that plays in regards to our rehab. The second thing off the back of that is not only the contralateral side, but our exercise selection. Selection isn't actually achieving what we think it's achieving in regards to capacity or strength. So something that I used to use a lot back in the day was ball squeezes, so just supine ball squeezes over copenhagen's or to supplement copenhagen. So this is definitely something that was just a bit of a re-trigger and a bit of a re-spark to go back to some ball squeezes as low-hanging fruit whilst also having Copenhagen. That gives you a little bit more of that involvement of the oblique sling as well as some frontal plane control.
Jordi Taylor:The next key point here, one that I loved that was done on. I don't know the lecture's name off the top of my head so I apologize, but it was around hamstring, and is the hamstring actually the victim? I thought that was a really great way of identifying that hamstring. As we know are multifactorial, but is the hamstring just the weakest link to break, not necessarily the problem? So the old classic above and below is it something to do with lumbar pelvic control or is it something to do with the foot and ankle? And then, in regards to what sport and what athlete and what position they play, are they more susceptible or more prone to injuries based on either the lumbar pelvic or the foot? So I thought again that was just a nice takeaway there.
Jordi Taylor:The next one that we have here is we can't see forces. So return to play criteria around, especially in regards to ACL, around our hops and just measuring distances around. Obviously, everyone has a different jumping strategy and to achieve, let's say, whether it be a triple hop or a single hop for distance, we actually can't see the forces upon that last landing and what we want to see is the forces, not just the distance. So that was just a bit of a spark there around the difference between chasing distance, also strategies, but then also what are some alternatives. So potentially is that something like using a single leg drop jump, obviously not to replace but also to compliment, which any decent ACL rehab would have. But again, just a nice quick summary and takeaway there that I really liked.
Jordi Taylor:Another one that I really liked here flight discipline, posture. So when we're talking about our jumps, what posture and discipline do we have? Now, this was in regards to a drop jump. So can an athlete actually take up that slack and pre-tension midair and not crumble? But I really like that term flight posture discipline and that's something I'll be using definitely in my vocabulary, maybe not so to athletes, but definitely with other coaches.
Jordi Taylor:And then the last one here is coach's eye. So coach's eye to our Murdoch is just simply technical insights and then having back pocket solutions. So can we bucket what we see into a key category he provided some fantastic insights across Axel, max V and change of direction, which some of these I've been using for a while, but it was always a great refresher but then also having that back pocket solution around. Okay, if this is what we see, what do we do and how do we identify the decision-making we then implement off the back of our queuing. So from Al absolutely love that one there. As a bit of a recap of the whole couple of days, some of the people that were there representing their companies and brands, the hydro guys that do BFR it was great to catch up with them and have a really good chat around how they're implementing BFR in compression shorts, which is a great way and an interesting way of applying BFR that's probably a little bit less invasive than a traditional BFR, so that's certainly a product that I'll be looking into. And also Firefly, which is a little recovery tool, essentially creates an e-stim muscle twitch which I played around on the flight home with some compression socks. So they were two companies that I really had some really good chats with.
Jordi Taylor:There was plenty of others there as well, and probably one of the other key things that when you go to events like this is you often see faces that you, or people's names that you see online, but when you see them in real life you almost second guess is that the person or not? So I do apologize. I'm sure I missed a lot of people, had to reintroduce myself and missed a lot of names, so I apologize for that. So that's one of those tough ones when you go to a conference, especially overseas, is there's so many familiar faces yet they're also so many unfamiliar faces at the same time. And then probably just a little bit of a final little summary here.
Jordi Taylor:One of the things I really loved that we did in London was actually the Monaco Art Gallery. So if you're ever in London you get a chance to do it. It's fantastic. I really enjoyed some of the different and modern art that was on display there from Andy, warhol, coors and a few other key artists around the last couple of years. It really made you think a little bit deeper on a few things. So I know that was a lot of words mumbled up nice and quick, but again, these are meant to be the theme of these little quick episodes. So, off the back of those quick, sharp points that I mentioned there, if you do have any questions, just reach out and I'll be able to clarify or add a bit more context to it as well. Hope I didn't ramble too much and there was at least.
