The Business Grew But the Messaging Didn't
Selective visibility strategist and business mentor Cindy Gordon walks through the quiet problem behind every established business hitting a revenue ceiling. The work has evolved. The skills have deepened. The clients are bigger. And the answer you give when someone asks what you do is still the one you gave three years ago. That gap is where money leaks.
This episode is anchored in the mastermind moment that launched The Strategic Entrepreneur podcast. Cindy was already doing podcast-quality work every time she opened her mouth in that room. Her business had already grown into it. Her messaging just had not caught up. The women in that room saw the gap. She could not.
In this episode, you'll discover:
- Why the answer that comes out of your mouth when someone asks what you do is almost certainly outdated
- The specific pattern that happens to every business that grows and outgrows its own messaging
- Why the competitor winning clients you should have won is not better than you, she is just easier to understand
- What outside eyes actually do that you cannot do for yourself, no matter how hard you think
- The role of peer feedback from women outside your niche in updating stale business messaging
- A live 4 week room starting August 4 built for exactly this kind of clarity work
Perfect for: established female entrepreneurs and small business owners who are still using the same bio, same website copy, and same networking answer they wrote when the business was younger. The work has moved on. The words need to catch up. And you cannot catch this from inside your own head.
Episode Highlights: "The work moves. The words stay. And you end up getting judged on a version of yourself that is not who you are anymore." "That person is not better than you. She is easier to understand." "You cannot get this from inside your own head."

About The Unmistakable Dossier
The Unmistakable Dossier is a 4 week live mini mind starting Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at 1pm ET. The room is capped at 10 women, and 6 seats remain. Over 4 weeks, each woman builds her Dossier, the brand core document that everything downstream in her business gets built on. Foundation, Position, Voice, Visibility Language. The room includes cohort Slack, an Ask Cindy channel for eyes on your work between sessions, and every session recorded and sent to you after. The differentiator: peer feedback from women outside your niche, the market research most business owners pay thousands for and cannot get anywhere else.

I want you to try something. When somebody asks you what you do, I want you to really listen to the answer that comes out of your mouth. Not the one that you would edit if you had 10 minutes to think about it, but the one that you actually say when someone catches you a little bit off guard at a networking event or school pickup or even a Zoom room. Now ask yourself, is that answer actually accurate to your business today or is it the version that you were giving a year ago, maybe two years ago or three years ago? That is the gap that I want to talk about today. Welcome back to The Strategic Entrepreneur. I'm Cindy Gordon, a selective visibility strategist and business mentor. I'm a six-time entrepreneur, and I've sold four of my businesses. When your business grows, the work moves. The words, often they stay put, and you end up getting judged on a version of yourself that is actually not who you are anymore. And a quick note before we get fully into this topic, my Thursday newsletter goes out to fifteen hundred plus entrepreneurs, and it's where I work through strategic pieces that I can't quite fit into these smaller episodes. Link in the show notes if you'd like to join us on email. So let's talk about it. Your business has grown, the work has evolved, and you are even more skilled than you were three years ago. You've added services, maybe you've deepened your expertise, taken on bigger clients or customers, and built new capabilities. Meanwhile, the language that you use to describe what you do has stayed exactly the same. It stayed the same because you have not stopped long enough to update it. You're inside the work, you're doing the thing, but you have not sat down and asked yourself, "Do these words actually still fit the business that I am running?" The cost is when someone asks you what you do and you give the old version, they are making a decision about you based on that old version, not on the business that you have built and are running today. They are making their decision on the business that you are still describing, which is the old one. That is the gap where your money leaks. The client that would have paid you five grand hires another person who can explain what she does so clearly at three grand. That person is not necessarily better than you. She's just easier to understand not long ago, I was in a mastermind, the kind of room where you show up consistently and let other women see how you actually operate over time. The women in the room, they watched me work. They saw how I asked questions, how I taught something when it came up that I had context on, and how I thought through situations out loud. And they all kept telling me the same thing, "You need to start a podcast. The voice that you are using in this room, more women need to hear it." It's what they kept telling me over and over and over. What's important about that. My business had already grown to include that capability. I was already doing the work every time I showed up in that mastermind room. But the way that I was describing what I did nowhere reflected it. I was still using messaging from a business two versions ago I dismissed their feedback at first. There had already been a hundred podcasts out there, and I wasn't sure that I really had anything different to add. The women in that mastermind room kept pointing out the same thing over and over. They could see what I was actually doing, and they could see the gap between what my business had become and what I was still calling myself. They definitely called me out and called me forward. You are listening to The Strategic Entrepreneur right now because those women in that mastermind group closed that gap for me. My business had already grown into this. My messaging had just not caught up yet. This is not just a personal story. This is what happens to every business owner that I work with, literally every business owner. Your business grows, the messaging stays, and the messaging is what buyers are seeing. I relate it back to this meme reel that I keep seeing on Instagram. It talks about entrepreneurship or owning a business is just realizing how dumb you were six months ago. It's not that we're dumb, it's that we haven't taken the time to catch up the messaging from all the things that we have learned and evolved from, as the meme would say, from six months ago. So you cannot close this gap from inside your own head. You are the one who has been living the work. To you, everything still feels pretty true. It feels accurate about what you do, but what you're describing as the work from the inside, the buyers meeting you from the outside, they're just not seeing it. Those are two completely different views. That outside view is the one that you cannot get for yourself, not because you're not trying, But because it is structurally impossible to see your own business the way that a stranger sees it for the first time. What outside eyes do is name the gap for you. They tell you what they thought you did based on your bio, your website, and your last few posts. And then they hold that up against what you actually do, and the distance between those two things is your work, and that is the work that the Unmistakable Dossier builds. Which brings me to the mini room that I want to tell you about. Here's what I'm running in August, a four-week live room called the Unmistakable Dossier. It's a mini mind. It's every Tuesday at 1:00 PM Eastern starting August 4th. It's capped at 10 women and six of those seats are still open, so that means four incredible women have already joined the room. Every week we build one piece of your brand core. Week one, foundation, who you are, what you're for. Week two, positioning, is what you actually stand for and what you refuse. Week three is voice and your voice fingerprint, which is very important to make your content actually sound like you. Week four is visibility language, the one line and the phrases that make your business make sense to someone in literally ten seconds. But here's what makes this a room and not just like any other program that's out there. Makes this unique is that the women already inside the four seats that are taken are from different niches, and they are looking at your business and telling you what they actually see. What they thought you did based upon your words, where they got confused, what made them lean in. This is market research, and it is worth more than any framework that I could hand you because you cannot get it from inside of your own head. One of the women who has been inside this kind of room put it to me this way. She said, "The group setting is powerful because I'm in a room with other business owners from different types of businesses. We are all encouraging each other, giving new ideas and new perspectives, and also challenging each other's, and this has been a game changer in my business." So if your business has grown but your messaging hasn't caught up yet, this room is built for you. Link in the show notes. So here's your assignment for the week. I want you to write down the answer you would actually give when someone asks you what you do. Write down the answer you actually give when someone asks what you do, the version that comes out of your mouth, not the version you would edit. Now I want you to write down what your business actually does today, so the actual work, the actual clients, and the actual outcomes. Look at the gap between those two things. That gap is where the money is walking away from you and to someone else, not because that someone else is better, but because she is easier to understand if your business has grown but your messaging has not, the Unmistakable Dossier is for you. Link in the show notes. I hope that you'll join us. Being unmistakable is not something that you find alone. Thanks for listening today. I'll see you again on Thursday. I'm Cindy Gordon, and this is The Strategic Entrepreneur.
