Miguel Castillo and I look back on 20 years of friendship, a church planting plan that did not happen, and the surprising ways God uses closed doors to guide our calling. We talk candidly about missions, marriage, and why Spain might not be post-Christian after all.
• remembering how our friendship started at a Dallas Seminary missions conference
• learning why passion does not automatically equal calling
• grieving a ministry dream while trusting God’s redirection
• why kingdom friendship matters more than transactional partnership
• what ministry in Spain is really like amid cultural Christianity
• Spain as the “cemetery of missionaries” and what may be changing
• early signs of a pre-awakening and Gen Z spiritual openness
• how the Holy Spirit shapes long-term leadership decisions

Welcome And Why We’re Here
SPEAKER_02Welcome to Real Life Ministry, where we are dedicated to teaching and encouraging Christians to live free and live strong. Your host today is Ryan Rice, a Bible teacher, a pastor, entrepreneur, and a writer. Join us as we dive into various topics and how they relate to faith, values, and making a positive impact in America. Let's dive into it.
SPEAKER_03All right, welcome back to another episode of Real Life Ministry. And I'm in the studio with Miguel. Miguel Castillo!
SPEAKER_00What a privilege, Ryan.
SPEAKER_01Thank you, brother. So good to be with you here. Dude.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's crazy because um we go way back. We do. I wrote my journal this morning. 20 years.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_03How old were you 20 years ago?
SPEAKER_01That means it was 2006.
A 20-Year Friendship Begins
SPEAKER_03It was 2006.
SPEAKER_01Dallas, Texas.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it was Dallas, Texas. Missions conference? It was a missions conference in Dallas Seminary. And uh you came in and I think you did have a speaking engagement or asked to do some kind of workshop. And uh did Walt invite you down? Or who was it? Who was it? It was Mike Pocock. Or Mark Young. Wow. If you got invited by the big Dr. Mark Young, which who would have known he would have become the president of Denver Seminary? Pretty amazing, huh? I mean, he was a professor at Dallas, a world missions professor. And uh he did such a great job though, didn't he? Oh. I mean, like, I don't know, did you ever study?
SPEAKER_01I think I think we had we probably at that time we probably had the, not a, but the world class missions department. I do too. I mean, you're talking about Dr. Wallbaker. Dr. Harrell. Oof, Dr. Michael Pocock. Oh, I know. Mark Young.
SPEAKER_03I know. And then we I had all three of those professors. Bro. Yeah. I I really think we I can't remember what I took Pocock for, but he was good. He wrote a cool book, too.
SPEAKER_01Pocock wrote an amazing book, and we're gonna get into it, I think. In this podcast? Later on today. Oh, wow. Because he wrote on that book, among others, he wrote a theology of immigration. Oh my god. I don't know if he knew that.
SPEAKER_03I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_01That book he covered, he covered some ground.
SPEAKER_03Wow.
SPEAKER_01One of the big topics. Because he was it wasn't even a hot topic back then.
SPEAKER_03No. I remember I think I remember reading that chapter, and I remember thinking, like, what does this have to do with anything?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think I think in the eyes of God, it's always been a hot topic. Yeah. But but if you think about it, back then it was not a hot topic when it comes to politics.
SPEAKER_03You know. So you went to Dallas Seminary, I went to Dallas Seminary, and I was supposed to plan a church with you.
SPEAKER_00Wow.
SPEAKER_03How how mad at me were you? Were you mad at me? Just be honest.
SPEAKER_01You know, you no, I as soon as you said that right now, I was like, isn't that amazing when you contrast and compare man's plans with God's plans? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And I think And I'll tell you, I wanted to go, and I'll tell you again. I probably told you before, but I want to tell you again kind of what happened in my heart and head. So anyway.
SPEAKER_01I think I I should.
SPEAKER_00Well, if it's gonna be a ton of confessions, I'd probably I think I need to do my part too.
SPEAKER_01Wow. Yeah. You start or I start? I think I think you start. That'd be good.
SPEAKER_03So again, uh for you listening in, guys, this is Miguel Castillo. He's a great friend of mine. Uh he we our church North Valley, the church that I pastor, um is uh a financial partner at some level. I hope to be a lot more in the future, but more than that, uh Miguel is a personal friend and he's doing a great gospel work in Madrid, Spain. And um it is a very close uh place and space uh for my wife and I. In some regard, I mean we we really prayerfully pursued exploring, uh really doing a life over there in ministry, and uh God had other plans and we wound up in Phoenix, Arizona. But Miguel uh went over there and has gosh, I bet 25 25 years? How many years have you been in Spain?
SPEAKER_01I have been in Spain for 23 years this May. That just 23 years. Yeah. And thank you, thank you, Ryan. And uh I will say at the outset, more than a financial partner, I I think we are friends, as you said at the table when we were eating dinner just uh just about an hour ago with our wives. And uh and I really mean it. And I and I think uh I know you mean it meant it. And uh and I think there's as as we said earlier, I don't think there is partnership without a kingdom friendship. Oh yeah. But I think uh because I think if there is only partnership without a friendship or a kingdom friendship, it's just a contract. Yeah, yeah. Hang on, just a second.
SPEAKER_03All right. So
When Ministry Dreams Get Rerouted
SPEAKER_03you were saying partnership, friendship, partnership, there is no partnership without a friendship.
SPEAKER_01I I I really believe so. If there's no kingdom friendship, yeah, there cannot be partnership. Yeah, that's something I've learned over the years. And and going back to your to your point, 20 years ago, Ryan, I'll speak for myself, I was learning. I was thrown out my heart with no filters. Oh yeah. And I and I believe, yeah, I can I can say when when when man's plans go just unbridled, you are exposed to to potentially forcing things. Yeah. And I think I was I was going with man my plans, man's plans, uh unbridled, unfiltered. Yeah. And um, and I think back in the day, of course, I think as we said earlier, I think I think that you know, coming together at that workshop, missions conference, it was well at first sight. Oh, yeah. I think there was some cr kindred spirits coming together, there was some mutual passion for the world and for what God was doing. Oh yeah. But does that mean it has to equate into necessarily and and and an undoubtedly a team to go church plant in Madrid Spain?
SPEAKER_03Right. I don't know. Right. Well, I felt like, you know, like looking back, I felt like it was the most necessary road for me to go down. Wow. For me to have the permission to go plant a church in the United States. Because, you know, as and I and I I can say like with unreserved clarity and conviction in my own heart that I felt like I put it all before the Lord and I sensed that he closed the door. Yeah. You know, and I think the big part for me was I remember just kind of coming to a place and going, you know, I mean, I do think the one Blake had an influence in me.
SPEAKER_00That was more blood that you're right.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it was just a lot of it was a sober, it was a sober judgment calling. Like from it, at least gave me a perspective that that that there was a need within the nation of Spain for indigenous pastors, and the bravado perhaps of the American pastor is not necessarily like the remedy. Or the only remedy. Yeah. Or the only remedy. And and I I was receptive to that, you know. I mean, and I think that you know, I mean, I cer I felt like your graciousness to help me survey this the the country, you know, was was really helpful and insightful, you know. But what ultimately kind of closed the door for me was sensing that God wanted me to be faithful to use the gifts that God He that I feel like He had prepared me for was in a predominantly a teaching ministry and leading ministry where I had the influence to be able to do that. And I and I think that God used the one Blake to help me to go. You know what? If I go to Spain, I probably need to be more of like a barnabas and come alongside people. And I don't know if that's truly my gifting.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_03And so I just said, okay, Lord, I'll go where you want me to go. And literally, you know, a day later, I get an invite from Mark Damas to Phoenix, Arizona. Wow. So I love to I never even like I didn't like Phoenix was not on my radar. Wow. Like, not at all. I I just sensed that God wanted me to plan a church, just like if it was with you or with whoever. And I believe that he really wanted me to do teaching and preaching like quite a bit. And so I was open to that. And then when I got into you know a year and a half, two years of the uh Madrid exploration, I sensed I'm like, you know what? I don't know the language, I don't know the culture. It's gonna be a very long, like acculturation process.
SPEAKER_01It was gonna take a learning curve of about two to four years.
SPEAKER_03Yep. And and I also thought, even once I have all that, I don't know if Spain needs an American preacher teacher as much. And so I was just open, and then God opened the door to Phoenix. And then so I show up, and literally, first guy, first guy I meet is Del Husey. He lays hands on me, he's the president of Phoenix Seminary and prays and says, like, God, like we've been praying for a guy like you. We won't just the floodgates opened up.
SPEAKER_01What a great affirmation of of saying, I'm I'm taking the steps of faith that I required in the moment, no? Oh, yeah. Looking back, Ryan, I want to say I'm proud of you for running the course. Aww. For doing the due diligence. I mean, I think back with great, great joy and fun memories of that summer. I mean, we did the Pamplona stage there for what, two weeks? Yeah. We did the Madrid, of course.
SPEAKER_03I think we we did a team teaching in Pampelona.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_03With the youth. And you taught in the vineyard. Bro, at the camp. And I taught at the at the camp and they brought the sheep. Sheep. You remember that? I said bring two or three, and they brought like 300.
SPEAKER_01Brother, how cool was that? That was so cool. I am I am the good shepherd, but I am the true vine. Yeah. And what a what an experience just that whole summer of saying, let's let's give it a shot. Yeah. Let's let's give it a ride, and uh let's take it out for a test drive. And say at the at the at the at the back end of that, which is today, yeah, say, what an experience. I'm almost what a what a prototype for future church planters globally to say, give it, let's have that permission. Yeah. To say, let's do it. Of course, I grieved it. Yeah. Of course, I no, it's true because you know, you didn't have to. Yeah. You have to, because it's something you're dreaming, you're hoping, you're envisioning, and saying, hey, I'm gonna take a different route and say, it's okay. Yeah, let's embrace it. Yeah, let's grieve it, but let's embrace it and let's let the Lord do the flourishing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, and it was, I mean, for people listening in, it was heart and soul woven into it. And I know that you did the same thing because like you invited me down to Monterey. I met your family, I spent time with your mom, your dad, your I don't know, the living, the living uh helper or whatever. Bro, back to kingdom friendship. Yeah. And I, you know, it grieved my heart tremendously, but I remember thinking, you know what? I I really sense that this is what the Lord wants. And it was heart grieving to let go of Madrid because like I had embraced this whole idea, like I was so proud, so proud to feel like I had such a role in the Great Commission. Wow, you know, and so, but then it like grieved my heart, like, okay, I'm not going to all nations. I'm gonna stay in my nation. I was like, oh my gosh. I was like, okay, well, the gospel's still needed, and Lord willing, we'll be a church that influences other, you know.
SPEAKER_01And brother, not only that, but you look at the United States today. Yeah, what a mission field.
SPEAKER_03It is a mission field.
SPEAKER_01What a place of opportunity, what a place of uh prototype for true gospel living and gospel preaching. Yeah. What a place of need. Yeah. Where there's so much stuff, so much confusion, so much in the world.
SPEAKER_03I mean, what's what's amazing is uh I thought you were, you know, I mean, I think America has got them uh just as many confusing, confusing ideologies as Spain or whatnot, you know.
SPEAKER_01I I totally say, I mean, with all with my heart in the hand. I'm proud of you, man. And and I'm so glad that you're here. You position you and Leslie and your team and your church body by as much time as this. Thank you.
SPEAKER_03Well, likewise, likewise for you, and you married a wonderful girl. Yes, Ilaria. Yes, did I pronounce it right? Ilaria.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, don't you don't feel like you need to go so strong on the R.
SPEAKER_00Hilaria. There you go. Come on now. Hilaria. Beautiful. Dang it. You did. Hey, Ilaria. You should listen to this.
SPEAKER_03So I was I doing the R really hard. Yeah, it would go a little too Mexican in the R. Okay.
A Summer In Spain And A Hard Goodbye
SPEAKER_03Hilaria. Uh, so he married a beautiful gal. Just a couple years after we kind of pulled out, and then your whole world got turned upside down.
SPEAKER_01That amazing. Even there, even there, God had a plan.
SPEAKER_03That was the grace of God, too. Because had we planted a church together, it would have taken a while.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it would have it would have been another 10 years before I found a wife. It truly, I mean, if you think about it, I I don't know if I had thought about that aspect. That's a good idea. But it opened up a space in my heart, in my mind, in my time to to say, hey.
SPEAKER_03Because you got married to her at what age?
SPEAKER_01I was 42. Wow. She was 32. Wow. Yeah. But but you're right. We met soon after.
SPEAKER_03It was probably a year, year and a half after we decided to but that, I mean, what a testimony too, I would say, for young men listening to this. Like, you think you have to like push it and go for it and compromise and cut corners. Like, I would say, like, dude, be like Miguel, bro. Like, squeeze it out, ring out your life for Jesus and wait. How did you find her?
SPEAKER_01Wow, you know, as you were saying that, our our mutual mentor, Dr. Walt Baker, used to say, Miguel, not any brother will do. And then another mentor we had, which was chaplain chaplain Bill Bryan, he used to say, Miguel, remember who you marry, because she either will make you or she will break you. Wow. And um, and yeah. Um what was your question? How did you meet her? How did you meet her? Well, we met at the Compassion International Office in Italy.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's right.
SPEAKER_01I had been there for about 10 years.
SPEAKER_03Did you just like you were like, hey, you saw her?
SPEAKER_01I I was invited to get some training because I was a volunteer in Spain for compassion. I was, you know, I was trying to get some sponsors for all these kids. Because it's a it's a it's a very natural um way to to reach uh Spanish families. And uh so the her boss invited me to get some training, and I go to Italy, and I I met her. She's the first person I see in the office. She did not give me the time of day. There was no way, there was no way she was gonna be engaging with me in any kind of conversation. Why? But I well, yeah, you need to ask her. But I the the you know, I always say Gal was on my side because she got plans to come to Spain to learn Spanish. And guess who came in the picture and helped? Miguel Castillo. Oh man. So so I helped her find a school, a family to live with. I mean, it was just uh providential, and you know, from my uh management. And she and she agreed. She said, Oh well, I you know, I I'll give you help. And I said, Come to Madrid. She said, Well, I really want to go to Salamanca, it's a good academic center. And that's where she ended up. But I visited her to Salamanca. We had Tapas and um Hamon Iberico and Cafe con leche. And uh she said, well, she said this later to me, but she said, this guy may be worth give it a chance. Wow. So that's where the Lord just allowed that spark.
SPEAKER_03How long did it take for you guys to to kind of like get serious? Well, how long from there did you get married?
SPEAKER_01Well, you know what? It I think it was really fast because she was 32. Well, she was 31, I was 41. I think we were at that stage in life where we knew what we wanted, we knew what we did not want to.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you spend enough time to know.
SPEAKER_01I think I think our ideas were pretty clear of that silhouette of what you know we each wanted. And I it went really fast. Well, like how fast. Within six months, well, within two and a half, three months, we were dating, seriously. Three, four months later, we got engaged. Yeah. And basically May 29th, 2010, we were getting married.
SPEAKER_03So how many months was it from the time you met to the time you got married?
SPEAKER_01From the day we met till we get married, it was 13 months.
SPEAKER_03Well, I beat you. I met Met Leslie and married her in nine. Come on. Woo! Yeah, I met her and married her job. Nine months. Wow. My family was crazy. Like, what? Everybody was crazy. They thought, they thought, they thought she was pregnant. People said that. I'm like, come on. Like, that's not good. Some people said that. My family didn't say that.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03But well, if you hear that, that's the puppy dog in the background. So 13 months. We got soundtrack. We got soundtrack. 13 months. Well, good for you. That's that's great, though. You know, it's exactly what I said. I mean, for Leslie and I, we had done all the wrong things, and we had spent out our lives on doing what we shouldn't have done, and then we realized what we needed to do. And so we found each other and just fell in love and went for it. And it it was really cool. But we were discipled the whole way. Like we kind of submitted ourselves under the leadership of a pastor and just said like, hey, we want to grow and be faithful to the Lord. And I was in ministry and I was scared of myself, you know. Like I don't want to blow it. I mean I had a lot of love and passion for her and just wanted to be faithful and my purity and passion for Christ and and so we met and got married nine months. Wow. So awesome. Yeah it's been fun. So you've been married to uh Ilaria I say that better? You did for did you say 17 years?
SPEAKER_01We've been married for 16 years. 16 and three months. Okay. 29th of May. Okay.
Marriage Wisdom And Waiting Well
SPEAKER_03And so since the time of kind of like you've been doing ministry let's talk about ministry for a moment. Are you ready?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Let's do it. Well you introduced me to so many wonderful people and it sounds like you still are connected to them like Victor Meran. Yes Barcelona.
SPEAKER_01Victor and Cesca. They're still going and they trained at DTS at our seminary as well and they also trained under Dennis Rainey. Dennis and Barbara Rainey and they started family life in Spain.
SPEAKER_03They also did stuff with the purpose driven church.
SPEAKER_01Correct. I remember that yeah correct when Victor and I came back guy.
SPEAKER_03Oh he's a that guy was an article tremendous guy. God used all the people we met and it was wonderful.
SPEAKER_01He still is yeah he still is I met him in Amsterdam 2000 Amsterdam?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Wow Dr.
SPEAKER_01Ramesh Richard took uh I remember that guy he was a professor in DTS he took a group of us to Amsterdam it was about eight of us and we met you know each one met whoever we wanted to meet but I linked up with the Spanish leadership you know and I remember noticing oh there's about three or four leaders here from Spain that have a voice strong voice back in the day.
SPEAKER_03And just for our listeners' perspective Spain is like the size of Texas somewhere around there roughly I think Spain may fit twice in Texas potentially I may want to look that up well so it's not that big. Yeah yeah so it's not that big geographically correct and so and there's a lot of need though in that country for people like very not a ton of people know Jesus not a ton of people it's Catholic by culture.
SPEAKER_01Correct yeah correct historically Catholic but it's one of those places where there's a lot of um what we call cultural Christianity probably where a lot of people and when I say cultural Christianity let me give you an example you will have a lot of people that will come to you and say I am Catholic but I'm also an atheist what so how do how do you put that together what yeah that's that's that's cultural Christianity. It's like so it's like I go to the mass but I don't believe in God at all correct it's just a nice little ritual correct it's like it's like in the south of the United States to give you an example parallel and say I'm Baptist but uh I don't really believe in God I I I I don't know what I I don't even know how to live out the Sermon on the Mount.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But I'm a Baptist.
SPEAKER_03Yeah you know yeah it's cultural it's basically like kind of like cultural religion or dead dead religion really correct yeah yeah I I remember that to a large degree and not only that but another thing I will say to what you're saying Ryan is a Spain is also historically considered the cemetery of missionaries.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah because missionaries wouldn't last more than five years. There was a documented record where missionaries would go from Switzerland from Norway from the United States from Korea and they would last anywhere from two to three maybe four years but no missionary would really outlive the five year mark. Wow so so that's why it was considered the cemetery mission is for many years. That's where John Blake you know was was he would be right along those lines and uh so that's the that's the context where we are working but I must say to our to our encouragement and if you are listening to to us here in this podcast I would encourage you and invite you to pray for us in Spain because Spain is living a new day.
SPEAKER_03Amen Spain is experiencing what we call a pre-awakening a lot of people are calling it uh post-Christian they're saying Europe Spain is a post-Christian region in the world we're we're we are deciding to call it a pre-awakening space wow a preawakening region in the world wow and and we're seeing we're seeing some uh some uh uh uh blooming you know beginning to bloom life in Christ and then there's there's a new hunger there's a new thirst there's a new desire to engage in conversation about spiritual things especially the Christian faith is it and uh what what we'll do is we'll do a two-part series in this podcast but uh to to wrap up on this thought is I want to in the next episode I want to talk about this pre-awakening that's happening and kind of like the sense of what God is doing and then what generation that is is it predominantly the 20s and 30s you know uh I'd be curious to unpack that with you.
SPEAKER_01I'll give you I'll give you a uh um preview on that and yes it is Gen Z it is the latter side of the millennials and uh it is fascinating it is fascinating. 15 20 years ago you you you you couldn't even have a conversation with an atheist or an agnostic and if you did it was very argumentative. Now it's much combative and today it's engaging yeah it's cordial it's warm it's let's I want to know more I want to genuinely know more because there is an openness there is a thirst and that's what's going on now.
SPEAKER_03Yeah that's so good you know I just sat I was telling I sat with our executive pastor today for a couple hours and we smoked some cigars had some good times and uh we were talking though I was telling him I I gave uh I created a research brief for our staff team and the number one reason why people come to church in America so good. They want to experience God. They want to experience God they answered the question I want an experience I want an encounter I want I want to experience God I want to know God. Aaron Ross Powell What's the source of that right it was a number of surveys and research it was Lifeway it was Gallup it was Pew It was uh a number of research factors that that got the information and then of course there's always that sense of belonging to community and all that but for community and purpose it was I want God. Wow you know I want to know about God. I want to experience God and I and I I think about like what God is doing in this younger generation and it's like I don't know if it's like there's just been this kind of dead end on you know the digital age of being connected but not connected. You know um so I'm I'm grateful that God I'm just grateful to be a part of this time. You know like I I sense it's an honor and a joy to be a part of this time. And I feel so honored and blessed. Like I'm like oh my goodness what a joy it is to hear what
Spain’s Spiritual Climate And Pre-Awakening
SPEAKER_03God is doing in Spain and in different parts of the country. Because like you said Spain's been like a graveyard.
SPEAKER_04Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_03Yep. I mean I remember reading so many books and like seeing all the the challenges ahead and visiting the churches and hearing Calist missionaries and pastors and then like hearing like your heart and saying like there's a there's a work that's happening is really cool.
SPEAKER_01Thank you Ryan yeah Ryan I just want to I mean if I have a a last word of this first part of the podcast hey I I want just to to acknowledge and and um and affirm you no you've already done it in your sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. Oh thank you I really I really appreciate I think if there there's there's yeah there's probably we could we can almost do the second part tonight but but but before going into it oh because there's I'm I'm sure there's things that we could affirm each other on. Yeah but but if I can highlight one of them good is your sensitivity to to the Holy Spirit I think throughout the years throughout the 20 years that you said 20 I can't believe it.
SPEAKER_03I know I know it's your sensitivity to the Holy Spirit oh I appreciate that I I well I I am grateful for that feedback and that's encouragement to me because I I truly in my conversion experience the Holy Spirit has been such a critical part of my like spiritual journey. Yeah and I had to study that biblically and theologically to grasp that because I was much more a Bible church rooted kid and then I got tossed into this deep charismatic environment that scared me to death but it was a healthy environment for me to wrestle with theology and I leaned on the Holy Spirit and I think it has formed me deeply but I will say I cannot wait as a teaser for the future to share about a word that you gave to me three years ago. Oh wow and God has blessed it and it has deeply impacted and made it one of the most rich ministry experiences of the last three years.
SPEAKER_01Wow we can't miss this one so you don't know what it is do you I think I'm a bunch oh do you okay well we're gonna leave it there and we'll see if you got it right all right guys we'll see you next time thanks for being a part check out reallife ministry.us and where do people find out about you Miguel if they only listen to one podcast where do they find out about you you're you got a church plant you've got an email an Instagram how do you want people to find you maybe they're coming to Madrid yeah if you if you want yeah reach out please reach out at uh miguel at m4 dotorg you got rid of the Madrid Cafe no that's it's still available Madrid Cafe is the up close and personal and I'm sorry no no no no no please feel free to write that as well madridcafe at gmail dot com and then miguel at m4europe you can write me directly and we can start a conversation we can continue the conversation and also there I can point you to our podcast which is Vivarium V-I-V A-R-I-U-M, which means place of life in Latin and that's where we speak and empower and promote church planting it's the only podcast in the Spanish speaking world that promotes church planting.
