Episode 11: Type A, Type B, or Somewhere in the Alphabet Soup?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Have you ever had someone completely shatter how you see yourself? When Rachael's partner casually mentioned she might be Type B rather than the Type A personality she'd identified with for 32 years, it sparked a journey of self-discovery that forms the heart of this episode.
We dive deep into the fascinating world of personality types, exploring the differences between Type A (competitive, urgent, ambitious) and Type B (relaxed, patient, balanced) personalities.
The exploration doesn't stop there. We share our results from the 16 Personalities test (based on Myers-Briggs), revealing how our ENTJ "Commander," ENFJ "Protagonist," and ENFP "Campaigner" personalities influence everything from our career choices to how we handle stress. What's striking is our shared "EN" foundation despite our different approaches to life—perhaps explaining why we connect so well as friends and co-hosts.
Whether you've taken dozens of personality tests or are skeptical about their value, this episode offers a refreshing perspective on how understanding your natural tendencies can provide a framework for personal growth. Take the tests along with us (links in our blog that will drop on May 15!) and join the conversation by sharing your personality type!
Hey everyone, welcome to Girl Gang Podcast. My name's Rachael,
SarahI'm Sarah
Brandiand I'm Brandi, and we are your hosts for this episode.
RachaelSo this week we are talking about personality types and tests. The reason that we bring up this subject is for my entire existence of 32 years, I've thought that I was a type A personality. And my partner and I were laying in bed a few weeks ago and he straight up told me I was a type B and I feel like I was shook,
Sarahshooketh.
RachaelI was shooketh, it like I felt like I was having a little crisis because I was so hell-bent on the fact that I am type A, have always been type A, and how dare he accuse me of being a type B personality?
RachaelSo I was doing some research obviously googling, and for those of you who may not know the differences between type A and type B, I'm very much reading off of Google's AI overview right now. But type A personalities tend to be like very competitive, ambitious, driven, multitasking, always have like the sense of urgency. Their work style is like high work ethic, always focusing on success. Challenges that they might face are like higher stress levels. They burn out quickly, interpersonal difficulties just because they have this strong drive and competitiveness, whereas a type B personality is. You tend to be more relaxed, easygoing, flexible, patient, not as focused on time constraints, appreciate more of a balanced approach to work and life balance, and then we can struggle with deadlines and things like that. So after I did some research.
RachaelI feel like maybe in a past life I was much more type A, but I could definitely see where he was coming from, in the sense that I'm type B because I really care about work-life balance. When the clock hits, you know 5 o'clock, I'm done, I'm not thinking about work anymore and I am pretty easygoing and pretty patient.
RachaelHonestly,
Brandiyeah, I was going to say. A lot of those described you and I think you know a lot. I feel like there's like a negative connotation to type B people.
SarahOh yeah
BrandiTo. You know the society has kind of made it like. You know you don't work hard and blah, blah blah. So I feel like a lot of people don't realize that there's a lot of positives to type B's
Sarahand it's not like one is better than the other.
SarahThey're just different.
BrandiYeah, absolutely
Sarahdifferent. It's so funny too, because I feel like I agree, I before would have thought you as more type A, but reading this and then actually like thinking about it for a little bit, I'm like I think you do have some type B qualities in the best way. Like you are very, you understand your work-life balance. You want to relax. You love that time with people.
BrandiYou are all about finding
SarahYou are always, always on the go you know like in a good way.
BrandiYou like the life balance.
SarahYes,
Brandiyou also just like chill out and like.
SarahYeah, although you are so organized still and like you're on top of your shit all the time.
RachaelWell, and I feel like growing up and like in college and early in my career, I was so wired all the time like thinking I had to hit like a certain job title, a certain salary, you know being married to a military person, like all of these things that, like I, was in this box of like type A, type A, type A. So then when I, you know, changed up my life a few years ago, I'm like holy shit, freedom.
RachaelLike we can do whatever now.
RachaelAnd now I'm just like smooth sailing and I feel like what I wanted out of a job, a career change, was work-life balance, and I feel like I have been able to accomplish that the past few years, which is really nice. So, in case anybody was wondering, my type A versus type B personality quiz came back as mostly type B. It said you know, I have a fair amount of type A in me as well, which was cool, but I tend to be relaxed, creative and even-tempered. It is interesting, though it talked about my job and it was saying, since I have some type B personalities, I might not be like trying to enhance my career, which I thought was super interesting.
RachaelAnd I think that the job that I have now I'm not actually looking to maybe level up in my management space, like I don't necessarily want to go up a level and become more of a management supervisor, but I am taking like my project management certification and everything like that right now, like,
Brandilike your
Rachaelyeah well, I'm doing the Google one. I don't know if it's like technically a pmp at the end, but I'm doing like the official google certification, which is pretty cool. So I do feel like I'm doing things to like enhance my skills in my career and things of that nature. But I thought that was interesting feedback. Yeah, what about you all?
BrandiI mean, let's be honest, we all know I'm a type A.
RachaelOh, yeah, okay.
BrandiIt said mostly type A, which I agree with, and I think it's really. I don't think there's many people out there I'm sure there are that are solely type A or type B.
Brandilike I feel like we're all on a spectrum of it, but obviously mostly type a. But kind of trailing off some of the things you've said and where I kind of fall into some of the type b is with my new job, strictly work-life balance. You know, as soon as I'm done with my work, you know I am, you know, packing up and all that. I'm also not looking to like in my current job. Maybe it's because we work for French companies.
BrandiI don't know what it is.
RachaelWe love those French companies
Brandilike I have no desire to move. I mean, okay, I take that back. If the position opened, I would probably apply for it.
RachaelYeah
Brandibecause I don't mind leading people, but I'm not not like actively, like
Rachaelyeah
BrandiI need this, I need this, I need this, which I have been in previous jobs, and part of me is questioning whether that's actually a personality trait or that's just a product of how our generation was raised.
SarahTrue
BrandiYou know, I really feel like millennials as a whole have really been pushed into this box of you know, these are how our grandparents and parents lived their lives. These are the milestones they hit at these ages, and I read something the other day on social media and I was like you can, you can strive for that if you want, but we don't live in the same world.
SarahRight, it's not the same.
BrandiThey did Like you don't make, your money doesn't go as far, inflation's through the roof, the housing market's through the roof, like all of this stuff. Like we just physically cannot support buying a house or having kids by. You know early 20s Like a lot. Or you know,
Sarahyeah
Brandiyou know all these things that they accomplished and I was looking back and I'm like how the hell did they do this
Sarahright
BrandiSo I think some of that's more of how we were raised.
RachaelUm, I do also feel like companies used to take care of their people more and it was very much like I'm in it for life and I can progress within it. But I think companies are really cutthroat nowadays and they'll get rid of those executives pretty.
SarahOh, I kind of think a little bit of the opposite,
Rachaelreally
SarahYeah, I think that
Brandiwhat was the last big company you worked for?
SarahI mean, I'm not gonna say the company, but
Brandiokay
SarahI've worked. I've worked for several large corporations and several smaller corporations too, both in nonprofit and in profit, I think, at least from my experience. I think there was a time in previous generations where, like you said, businesses and employees were meant to pick a job, stay there, get your pension, retire and be done with it. You're going to stay there for 30 years, I think now, because our generation, the millennials, are getting more into higher up spots, it's not, I think the expectation of needing to stay at a company long term like that to show your loyalty is not needed as much. I think now there are companies that are you only stayed at the previous company for three years. I don't think they look down upon that as they would have in years past.
BrandiWell, yeah, because Gen Zs and millennials hop - that's how you make more money.
SarahWell, making more money, but also it's just. I feel like it's more feasible, like I, as I'm getting older, I cannot see myself working or doing the same exact thing for 30 years.
RachaelYeah
SarahI just can't. Like I need a variety, I want to switch it up.
SarahUh, you know, throughout the life like I don't want to just do one thing, but
Brandithat's your type b,
Sarahcorrect
Branditalking because
Sarahthat's not a possibility, like there are jobs where you learn this, that's your career, that's what you are, that's why we have, you know, doctors and lawyers and all that. Those kinds of things. I'm not one of those career girlies.
SarahI like to mix it up and try new things, and if something strikes my interest, I want to try it. But I don't think that we, like you said, we lived in that box where you had to find a job stick with it and it was bad if you went jumping around. But I think that's kind of changing now. I think it's going to continue to change and
BrandiI think it's both parties.
BrandiSo I think it's the companies and the employees. But yeah, so personalities, I think definitely tie, tie into our careers what we've chosen as professions, or even you know how we see our careers because, like I, you know mostly type a, haven't I? I stayed at a company for almost 10 years and I don't plan I mean I plan on as of right now. Granted, I've only been there a year now, but with my current company I have full intentions of retiring there.
RachaelReally
Brandiyeah,
Rachaelthat's awesome
Brandiwhich I also thought that about one of my previous the job I was at for 10 years too. But they're huge international corporation like huge, like about numbers and stuff.
BrandiIt was really hard to move up and things like that. So I was always pushing myself like, oh, I need to get. You know, I got two master's degrees, I did, like all these certifications and trainings, like I have to move up in management to make money and all this stuff. And now you know I'm I'm actually able to to do that work-life balance stuff, and that, I think, allows that that little part of type b in me um, or maybe it's not that and maybe it's the type a in me isn't necessarily career oriented, like it's not geared towards that. Now it's more of I'm going to be type A about my life,
Sarahlike your own goals, yeah
Brandimy personal goals, and that's what I'm going to strive for, like I'm going to, you know, hit that and I think maybe that's easier.
RachaelI mean, I think you can go through phases, like once you get to a certain point in your career, then you can kind of focus more on your personal life, or if you feel like your personal life is okay, then you can kind of focus more on your career. But I think as a type b, mostly personality, my job probably works really well for me because I like, even though I'm busy all day, every day in a lot of meetings, all of my meetings are different and I'm able to use creativity and connect with people on a daily basis, and I think that's what's rewarding for me is like no day, no, no day is the same every single day, which is nice.
BrandiI mean, that helps, I think, just enjoying your job too,
Rachaeloh yeah
Sarahabsolutely
Rachaelabsolutely
Sarahabsolutely.
SarahI struggled with my results a little bit, but it also made a lot of sense. Mine says I am right down the middle. Okay, type A and type B.
BrandiI'll be honest with you. I was surprised by a little bit there.
SarahI know, and it says this is so funny too.
RachaelI'm surprised by it because, like, as I was talking to my partner about and he was like no, you're type B, he was saying Brandi is on the left, like she's type A, you're kind of in the middle, and Kozy is on the right, more type B. So the fact that you got in the middle and I got mostly type b I'm just like this is fascinating.
RachaelSo tell us more
Sarahtruly, I feel like this actually causes a lot of my own anxiety, being stuck in the middle of type a and type b, because I am always in an argument with myself on how I need to do things. I know that I want to be organized and have my list and have my to-do list and there are days where I am on top of that shit. The follow-through is a little rough and that's where the type b comes in.
BrandiYeah
SarahI want to get my shit done, but something comes up and I want to have fun or I want to relax. I'm gonna go do that. It just is because the type b in me wants to just have fun and enjoy life and just relax
Brandithat work-lif e balance
SarahRight which I've struggled with my entire life, and I don't blame truly any of the companies that I worked for.
SarahI truly blame myself in that, because I never knew how to give myself like the life or work-life balance I was just born and bred to work. Like, that has just been my entire life. I've I've very career focused and oriented up until like maybe five years ago when I'm like I'm sad, I don't want to do this anymore. I'm so stressed out, um, and this is why it makes sense, because I truly think it's my type a parts of my personality and my type b parts of my personality just can't connect, they can't get on the same page. And it's because I always used to tell every therapist I've had that I kind of have like a little angel and devil on my shoulders, like one's telling me the right thing or the more logical thing or whatever it may be.
SarahI have plenty of terms and categories that I call the devil and angel on my shoulders, um, and one could just be more of the feeling and the emotional aspects of it. So it made all the sense in the world to me too, because, although I'm not very organized, I have my chaotic, organized mess where I know where everything is, but it doesn't look organized to anybody else.
RachaelYeah,
Sarahbut also to the point where I am type B but I am not a relaxer. I have to and truly this has been a really big struggle. Even the last like two years of forcing myself to relax, not thinking that it's just lazy when my body just needs to rest or my mind just needs to rest,
RachaelI could see that
SarahI never knew how to give myself that.
SarahI never knew that was a thing
Rachaelthere would be weeks, like when I lived on my own. I did not turn on my tv for weeks because I was always going, going, going or maybe I was reading a self-help book or something like that. And now, living with my partner, the fact that, like on a Saturday and Sunday, we're just lounging on the couch, I'm like at first I had anxiety from it.
RachaelI was like what are we doing? Why are we
Rachaelgetting anything done, like what is this? And he's just like look, I fucking work 15 hours a day, like I'm not gonna use brain capacity on the weekends.
RachaelWe're gonna chill and we're gonna enjoy it and like it's okay because all that shit can wait
Brandithat's your anxiety, speaking
Sarahmy partner's the same way there
Brandibecause
Rachaelof not getting stuff done?
Brandino of not being able to relax because your mind is constantly like what should I be doing instead?
Sarahthat's funny too, because I recently am making it more of a conscious effort to be in silence, because if I'm home alone I will always have a tv on a podcast, music. My brain is never silent and neither is my environment, and I've really noticed that too, and I think that's kind of why I'm. I'm type b, because I want to have that balance in the things that I'm doing but, I'm not type a enough to like turn this off, get your shit done. Like I'm always in that little in between area,
Brandiyeah
Brandium I was just curious because I do have anxiety. But I was mostly a A I was like okay, I know I have some type b characteristics around. Like I trust me, when I get organized it brings so much like serotonin in my life. I know that I'm type a A feels
Sarahit feels so good
Brandianxiety private, like I just feel overwhelmed and don't do it and then like that. So I looked into like how that impacts and type a people are more likely to have anxiety and like a shit ton more stress than type b.
RachaelYeah, that makes sense,
Sarahwhich is why I know I'm not fully type b, because then that makes no freaking sense, because I am all stress so,
Brandium, so that actually you know you're, you're way more likely to have anxiety if you're, you're, type a
Sarahthat's funny too, because, even though I feel the same way, I have all the serotonin when I organize something, but it's never completely done like, and I can never get it to a point or organize it enough where it's like cool, that's it.
SarahIt is organized cool, let's move on no,
Rachaelyou never finish it
Sarahit's not even a finish thing too.
SarahI mean, it's most times it's not a finish thing, but it's just like it's never ready, it's just never good enough, it's never complete. I'm always needing, I need extra bins to go in this spot, I need to move this over here, but that's like a stopping area, like it's just never complete, but it's in those situations. It's not that I can't follow through, it's. It's just that it's never good enough, it's never up to meeting my own expectations or whoever's expectations that I'm thinking of in my brain, because,
Brandiyeah
SarahI'm over it.
BrandiThat was gonna be my statement. I'm like are you trying? You know, we talked about like those clear bins when we did the cleaning episode and everything and like just looking at social media and those expectations and trying to live up to right, even though we all know they're not real it just your, your brain just doesn't, can't
ADHD Medication & Personality Types
Rachaelthat's why you just don't look at it like I don't use tiktok and I'm okay with that.
BrandiHonestly, I've been
Rachaeltiktok is a waste of time in my personal opinion.
SarahOh, it's a.
RachaelThat's just me,
SarahI spend too much time on it.
BrandiThat's that. You know how your partner was like. I don't want to do any brain capacity. That's me with tiktok, okay, but mine's all like cute animal right now to the point where I like cry every night because there's a sad one on there. Oh my god, stop it anyway
Rachaelum, okay.
RachaelSo thought here I'm on like two and a half weeks of taking ADHD medication
Brandiand how's that going?
RachaelIt's been great. Like so I'm taking Strattera and when I had talked to my doctor. So I saw my doctor and a few years ago I had been diagnosed with anxiety and so and I talked about this in a previous episode like I was on Zoloft for a while, I was on Celexa for a while, really fucked me up like depressed, you know, couldn't do much.
RachaelBut the issue that I've been having more recently is my brain is just always going, but it's never clear thoughts, it's just kind of forever buzzing, like I don't even know how to describe it, but I get very overwhelmed with a lot going on, can't really focus, and it impacts my ability to like be an active listener and have good communication skills. And so all this comes down to the fact that my counselor thought maybe I have like some undiagnosed ADD or ADHD. So I saw my doctor and she was like, like you do, you're showing some ADHD tendencies, but since you have an underlying anxiety condition, like it could just be the anxiety,
Sarahbecause those are also misdiagnosed in women a whole lot
Rachaelright and yeah, and even our my counselor was saying like there's this generation of women who, like, grew up with uh, without getting diagnosed, because we react so much different than boys when it comes to ADD
Sarahand we can mask it so much better.
RachaelYeah, and so boys, it's like very obvious. It's like wow, you're fucking insane, like we need to get you on something, whereas women
Brandinow like more hyperactive
Rachaelyeah just like,
Sarahlike externally versus I think women are like hyperactive more internally, so it's
Rachaelexactly so they didn't so they didn't really recognize this and so I can.
RachaelI feel like I can like go all the way back to like feeling this way and so. But I told her I was like, look, I don't really want to be on a stimulant, like I don't want to be on an Adderall kind of thing. Like can we, can we start with a non-stimulant? And so she started me on Strattera. So probably wasn't the best idea. Like I started on the day of my grandpa's visitation, so my anxiety was already high. So the first week was like a little bit higher anxiety. She said that I might have some higher anxiety but to be honest, I've been like super locked in. I've gotten so much done,
Brandinice
RachaelI'm like like I don't even yawn until like 11 pm or midnight which that that's gonna get so like I gotta get used to that a little bit.
RachaelI don't even yawn um, but truly like, because even I take like my b vitamins and I feel like I don't even have to take my b vitamins because like I'm wired.
SarahHow is relaxing at the end of the day then?
Rachaelyou know it's not bad. I just feel like I'm doing like the things that I wouldn't normally do, like work on the podcast. You know, sometimes I would be like, oh, I feel like I don't have the energy, or like I don't have the energy to read this book, or, um, like drawing, I drew last night, like I was like sketching, yeah, and so it's like things that I want to do, but at the end of the day felt like I never really had the energy to do. But because I have the Strattera now I've had that energy and I'm like this is an interesting concept like
Sarahwe should do.
RachaelWhere could I be in life?
Sarahwe should do another episode on that, because I feel like I have a lot more to relate to you on. On, like ADHD medications,
Rachaelyeah for sure,
Sarahbecause, yeah, we can go on a whole tangent on that. Yeah.
RachaelBut I do feel like it kind of interweaves with the personality piece of it, because I'm not saying that medication is like the way to go, because I was hesitant for sure, but I do think it helps, like my type B tendencies, like hone in and then I can actually like make progression on things that I like deep down I want to do, but that anxiety or like that type B was kind of preventing me to do which is nice.
SarahSee and I feel like that's kind of along the same lines too I don't do what I did. Take your medication if you're prescribed your medication. Don't stop taking them, because just don't. That's not cool. No, but if you're like me and you are in the middle of type A and type B and you're on ADHD medication, it was definitely forcing a lot more of my type A traits and not allowing a lot more of my type B traits to come in
Rachaelyou felt stifled?
SarahThere were times where I just felt like I was always on, I was always going,
Rachaelyeah,
Breaking Down 16 Personalities (Myers-Briggs) Results
Sarahand and the relaxing was still difficult, but I was able to do like what you said. I had felt like I had more time to do things, more motivation to do things, but so long on that I'm like I'm absolutely exhausted, drained, I'm not sleeping well, like this is not good. Um. So it's definitely a balance, but this is just. It all makes so much sense now
Brandialso stifled was
RachaelI'm just waiting for Brandi to call me out
RachaelI'm saying he's the wrong word.
BrandiThat's why I was quiet.
BrandiI'm like she did it.
RachaelThanks, Brandi, appreciate you. Okay. So then, outside of type A, B personalities, then we all just got a little curious and we were like, okay, let's do some other personality tests and see what we did. So there is a personality test called 16 personalities, which some of you may know as Myers-Briggs, and so this breaks your personality down into like 16 different types of personalities. But it's all based on a combination of letters, and so I'm going to give you some information on the combination of letters. So the first combination could be an E or an I, which stands for extrovert or introvert. The second letter breakdown is S and N, so there's sensing and intuition. The third set of letters is a T and an F, so you're thinking or you're feeling. And then the fourth set of letters is you're judging or you're perceiving, and so basically, you answer a shit ton of questions and at the end it spits out.
RachaelIt spits out like a four-letter code, yeah it's your personality code and you kind of figure out what that means for you and why you react the way that you react to certain things. So I'm curious. We have not shared our results with each other yet. So what are you both, Brandi - Why don't you go first? Because she's laughing and she's just like oh, I knew that, like I knew I was gonna get that
Brandi - ENTJ - The Commander
Brandiokay, so I so also the 16 personalities where it kind of differs between um the regular,
Rachaellike the enneagram or?
Brandino, no, the Myers-Briggs
Rachaelokay, yeah, yeah, okay
Brandithe thing with 16 personalities is, it's a company that took that, but they also added a fifth letter.
SarahI was wondering because I have not had the dash fifth letter before.
BrandiIt's either an A or a T, and it's either assertive or turbulent.
SarahOh, ah, that's a new one.
BrandiYes, so did you guys get a fifth letter when you did it?
SarahYes,
RachaelI don't think I got a fifth letter.
RachaelWhat did I get?
RachaelI don't know. Okay, you go, I'll see if I got a fifth letter.
BrandiOkay.
BrandiSo I am an ENTJ,
Rachaelentj, so that's extroverted. Hold on. I got to go back to my
BrandiIntuitive,
Rachaelintuitive
BrandiThinking
Rachaeland judging,
Brandiand then I also got the A for assertive.
BrandiSo basically that comes down to I'm the Commander is like the common term for my results. So the quote it gave me on my results was from Steve Jobs and it says "your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.
SarahLove it.
RachaelThat sounds very you.
SarahOh, I don't see a quote
BrandiYou are a natural born leader with an unparalleled drive to turn your visions into reality. Your strategic mind excels at seeing the big picture, identifying long term goals and devising efficient plans to achieve them. You possess a rare combination of confidence, charisma and decisiveness that draws others to you and inspires them to follow your lead.
RachaelWow, that was spot on for you,
BrandiI know, but yeah, it's. I've been an ENTJ like my entire life like it hasn't changed.
BrandiUm, this is the first result where I got that fifth letter. Uh, so that was kind of interesting. Um to to to get that result and basically, if you're assertive, it means you're likely self-assured, even-tempered and resistant to stress, refusing to worry too much, um, so I would say the self-assured probably is what gets me through the assertive um, and I've, I think, during certain parts of my life, like the worrying scale kind of ebbs and flows depending on what else is happening in my life. But for the most part I'm just like, yeah, it is what it is. But I mean there are times I worry like,
Rachaelyeah
BrandiI'm the Commander, like I said, I knew that one going into it.
RachaelWho it said on on our results.
BrandiThe famous people?
Rachaelyeah like
Rachaelwho are the famous people that you relate to?
Sarah - ENFP - The Campaigner
Brandium, obviously Steve Jobs was one of them. Um, sorry, I gotta scroll down to see them again. Uh, Gordon Ramsey.
RachaelOh okay,
Sarahnice okay, uh love him.
BrandiF. D. R.
RachaelOkay,
Sarahnice,
BrandiWhoopi Goldberg, Jim Carrey,
RachaelI love Jim Carrey
BrandiHarrison Ford,
Sarahnice
Brandium. It even gave me some fictional ones, which I thought was funny Dr. Strange and Tony Soprano
Rachaelhell, yeah
Brandiyeah,
Rachaelthat's badass
BrandiSo
RachaelI like that
BrandiMiranda Priestly from uh, The Devil Wears Prada.
BrandiThat was my favorite.
BrandiI relate to her so much
Sarahoh my Campaigners, I might know, are awesome.
RachaelOkay, what is a Campaigner? What does that mean?
SarahI am a Campaigner, my letters are E-N-F-P, so I am extroverted, intuitive, feeling, prospecting and turbulent.
RachaelI didn't get the fifth letter.
RachaelWhat did I do wrong?
SarahI don't see the quote either.
BrandiYou didn't get a quote?
SarahI don't think so
Brandiit's right at the front.
RachaelOh, I got the quote
SarahOkay.
SarahI was looking at the quote but I did notice when you were talking about the people. My people are Robert Downey Jr. Okay, Robin Williams, who I absolutely love, Quentin Tarantino I know, I completely mispronounced that,
BrandiQuentin
BrandiTarantino
Rachaelhe's like the actor or the director.
SarahThat's cool
RachaelMovies!
SarahMine says, as an ENFP Campaigner, you are a vibrant force of enthusiasm, creativity and idealism. Your mind is a constant whirlwind of ideas and possibilities, each more exciting than the last. You approach life with an infectious energy that draws others to you, your charisma and genuine interest in people making you a natural connector and inspirational force.
RachaelOoh
BrandiYep,
Rachaelthat is so you,
Sarahmm-hmm
RachaelI love that.
Brandiwhich I know like it's just a general term, but you've got campaign manager right on the table,
SarahI mean that's probably one of my favorite jobs was working in like nonprofit.
SarahI do really enjoy still working in nonprofits, so maybe I'll find my way back there somewhere
Brandiyeah, definitely
Sarahum. But it's funny too because it also makes sense with the middle of the type a and type b, because it says um, you excel in excel in roles that allow you to use your exceptional communication skills and tap into your boundless creativity. However, the conventional nine-to-five grind can feel stifling to your free-spirited nature, so you may struggle with strict routines, hierarchies or jobs that involve a lot of repetitive tasks.
RachaelOh, it's speaking to you.
RachaelIt is so clear it is.
SarahBut you know, when it did, when it did go to careers, um, it said there's a career one One was event planner, obviously
Rachaelthat you would be good at as an event planner?
SarahYes,
Rachaelokay, yeah, which you've crushed that in your life already.
SarahWe did,
Rachaelwe were there
Sarahan entrepreneur or an event planner,
Rachaeloh,
Sarahand I'm like well, okay,
Rachaelyou're on to something,
Rachaelyou're on to something.
SarahI need the ever-changing variety and creative freedom, and because that's it's, so it's, I hate it sometimes. I do hate it sometimes because I know that I need routine and structure, but at the same time, I hate routine and structure because it puts me in a box. So you, really, I have yet to find a way to win.
Rachael - ENFJ - The Protagonist
BrandiYeah, I know that, speaking of jobs and how it kind of fit into you, like mine was literally management, consulting, engineer and law, and the only one I haven't done is law, but I did consider it at one point.
SarahThat'd be cool.
BrandiOkay, so I've nailed all of it like I've managed people. I work for a consulting firm. I've been an engineer for you know how long now. Like, totally, like they're nailing it this, this personality test.
Rachaelyou're not doubting yourself at all, Brandi, you know who you are down into your core,
Brandibut I'm like this.
Brandiwe're all seeing that this is like is accurate, and I feel like that's why it's such a popular test.
RachaelYou know what this personality test did for me? It made me realize I'm not as psychotic as I think I am sometimes, because truly like sometimes I'm like what the fuck is wrong with me. Like why can't I be an active listener? Why do I struggle in certain areas of my life? And I fucking know that they're an issue and I can call them out that they're an issue and I actively work towards them every single fucking day.
RachaelAnd then this personality test is like well, you might struggle with this and that's because you're this personality type and I like, oh
Sarahright
Rachaelso it gets me, it's okay not that I'm screwed, but it was more like it's okay, like that's just who you are, and I felt like I could like own it a little bit more, which was really nice so, oh, I did get the fifth letter. I'm going through my uh giant ass google doc now finding my results, but so I am an E-N-F-J-A. Okay, so I'm so.
BrandiWait, we're all E-N's?
Rachaelwe're, we're all E-N's
Brandiokay
Rachaelokay let me go back.
BrandiI thought that was interesting.
RachaelI was and I'm an E-N-F-J and you were what
SarahE-N-F-P-P
Rachaeland you were
BrandiE-N-T-J
RachaelE-N-T-J so both of you were a's as your fifth letter, yeah, and then I was a t, which I don't think I mentioned.
SarahWhat the turbulent was? It's, you're likely, self-conscious, sensitive, distress, success driven, perfectionist, perfection and eager to improve.
SarahI feel like that's very contradicting.
BrandiNo, I think that all suits you.
SarahYeah,
Brandito a degree.
RachaelWhat does the?
RachaelA mean
BrandiAssertive,
Sarahassertive.
RachaelAssertive. Did we get a definition for that?
BrandiYes, it did.
SarahI am not.
SarahI avoid conflict
BrandiAssertive is self-assured, even-tempered and resistant to stress, refusing to worry too much.
RachaelOh yeah, I'm like deep breaths all the time. Open my Finch app, do my deep breathing exercises.
BrandiBut I mean we also have anxiety to you know. Well, we have personalities, we also have mental disorders, that kind of counteract some of these things.
RachaelSo so, as an ENFJ I'm the Protagonist. I possess a unique blend of charisma, empathy and idealism that sets me apart from a crowd. My natural ability, uh, to inspire and lead others. It's matched only by your deep-seated desire to make a positive impact around the world around you. You have an uncanny knack for understanding people's emotions and motivations, often sensing what others need before they even realize it themselves. Your gift for communication allows you to articulate your visionary ideas with passion and conviction, drawing others into your orbit and motivating them to join you in your cause. I thrive on meaningful connections and have a remarkable talent for bringing up the best in those around you
SarahAbsolutely.
RachaelHowever, my idealistic nature can sometimes set you up for disappointment when reality falls short of your lofty expectations.
BrandiAnd that's where I come in
Rachaeland that's where Brandi shuts me down and she's like nah, this is what's up. Um
Brandirealist over here,
Rachaelthe realist
Brandihow do you feel about your results like
RachaelI feel like they're accurate.
RachaelI think I have taken this in the past and I have always been an ENFJ, so I knew this. I took this in college and that's what I got in college. So I felt like I was curious to see if it would change, because I feel like my life has changed significantly and I've changed significantly since then, but
SarahI really thought mine was going to be different, like not dramatically different, but like slightly like.
SarahMaybe I grew a little bit um, but no, it's the same thing I had in high school, same thing I had in college, same thing, but which also still made sense
Brandiyeah, I just.
BrandiI mean, it's your personality, like I just don't
Sarahright, it's like yeah, it's kind of like you, like you still are who you are because of like how you're raised, situations you were in, like because of your life. You're still you, but I think there are still traits we can learn um. But, agreed, I think your personality is your personality, like you can change things, but ultimately, like you are who you are
Brandiand I mean a lot of these questions, aren't?
Brandithey're how you feel or how you would react to a situation?
SarahYeah,
Brandiand I
BrandiAnd ultimately, like you can learn, you know, maybe you one of your personalities, you're prone to anger, and you can learn anger management
Sarahyeah
Brandibut when you're reading these questions and truly like looking at your like true self and you're like, okay, yeah, that's me, yeah, or this means you know, I've had problems with that in the past, like you're gonna, you going to know that, more so than people that aren't in your head,
Rachaelright,
Sarahyeah,
Brandiwho have just witnessed your anger management. You know techniques and everything, but ultimately deep down you know like, oh, I do get angry. I just I know how to control it now.
SarahAnd I like and I think part of whole process of this test too is because they'll phrase similar questions in different ways that make you think, and you can answer those in different ways too, which all come into effect. So I like that.
RachaelThere were a couple of themes that I felt like when I was taking this test of oh, a younger version of me would have answered this differently.
SarahThat's what got me to.
RachaelOne of them was like do you care about other people's opinions about you? Or like do you try to please others? And things like that, and I feel like I used to be a really big people pleaser and really care about what people thought about me, and I could give two fucks nowadays what people think about me, so I feel like that's a win on my end.
SarahA lot of mine are always like because I mean so always in between.
SarahThere were a couple questions that I really struggle with answering because I need more information,
Rachaellike what?
SarahLike the one that came up in my brain was like do you stress about having to make phone calls? And I'm like with who Exactly?
SarahRight? No, I don't mind making phone calls and I'm like kind of phone with you, right? No, I don't mind making phone calls, I don't love making my own appointments.
SarahI hate cold calling, like I really hate cold calling.
SarahI can do it and I'm damn good at it, but I don't like it,
Rachaelyeah
Sarahso some of those questions I'm like I'm kind of just indifferent or um, I can't remember, like another question, but it's like, yes, sometimes I like that, sometimes I don't it like that big of a deal. So I kind of put my answer in the middle. But I find myself torn between having to pick agree and disagree. So I like this one had the in-betweens, like usually they'll have strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, disagree. This had one extra one, so it was like partially agree, agree, neutral, and agree, agree neutral, and then
Do personality tests become out of date as time goes on?
Brandiit had five choices like five dots right, or am I getting it?
Sarahit had
Rachaelwas it seven
Brandiit was seven.
SarahYeah, was that a neutral one, and then it had three options on each side instead of yeah,
BrandiI will say I've always been told and like, obviously, like I answered some towards the middle and everything but like to get the most accurate result it's supposed to be like immediate and as extreme as possible.
RachaelDon't change your answer,
Sarahbut that's why.
SarahIt's not even that I'm like thinking about it too much. It's really that I just need more information, Because I don't want to say I strongly agree with I don't like making phone calls because it's not true, but it does just depend on who I'm calling
Brandiand I'm interested.
BrandiYou kind of bring up a good point like do these questions change with technology or is like the gen z and alpha generations just going to have different personalities because none of them like making phone calls?
SarahI mean, I would think that some of these questions have to like change over time just because of there might be better ways of wording things, there might be more information on why this question. It should be included in this personality test versus this question, like I'm sure there's little things about, like we're down there, but I don't really know because these personnel generation, though, because then I feel like it's what?
RachaelAre they outdated at that point?
Rachaellike. Does the personality test become outdated as generations progress?
BrandiBut I still feel like there's going to be introverts, extroverts.
BrandiI feel like those basic ones don't change. I just think you have to change the question to be relevant for them.
SarahAnd I feel like it's still like we're all human, no matter what generation we're from too. We think differently, but we all kind of essentially work the same way
BrandiI don't know.
BrandiI kind of want to look into
Sarahthat'd be interesting
Brandias the generations.
BrandiLike you know, are there more like extroverts in the boomer generation and it's slowly decreased
Sarahokay, call out to all the Girl Gang listeners if you are knowledgeable or you have like accreditation for anything with these personality tests or psychology and you have some input, we want to have you on the podcast so we can talk this out, because yes, I'm interested now
Brandiyeah, sorry, that was just a
Sarahno, that's that is. That's very valid.
SarahIt's a really good question
RachaelNo, as I was doing this too, I was just thinking like I fucking love personality tests
Brandioh yeah
Rachaellike I would do this as a career. I
SarahI love this stuff
RachaelI would talk about it in what I do, so I thought it was really helpful. It was nice to be reassured, to know like who I am, even though many things have happened in my life, but overall, shooketh, I'm a type B.
SarahYeah,
Rachaelpretty solid.
RachaelShooketh because I'm a type B, but feeling pretty good about my result overall and it's interesting to hear what your guys' personalities were.
SarahDid you guys get?
Sarahyour fun facts about your title.
RachaelOh fun facts. What are my fun facts?
SarahThis is at the very end of the email results for me.
RachaelOh, I didn't get. I didn't email, I just screenshotted everything.
SarahI did too.
BrandiFirst, mine's still on my phone because I never close my browser.
BrandiType B there
SarahIt says fun facts about campaigners, just if anyone else can relate to the personality types that we were um. Campaigners prefer being called weird to being like everybody else very true in my case. Have a lot of varied hobbies absolutely true in my case. Uh, try to live like there's no tomorrow. The one thing is, it says, wear bright and colorful clothes. I think I'm getting more into that, but I've always kind of been like neutral I don't know um and then believe everyone can be successful if they try hard enough, which you absolutely can be.
BrandiI didn't get the fun facts.
SarahOh, maybe I'm special maybe just a campaigner thing.
BrandiOh, this is going back to personality perfectly. Yeah, I don't have those
Rachaelit's like in a gray box at the bottom in the conclusion section. So mine's saying ENFJ's gifts include idealism, determination and the ability to envision a better future, but they don't just want to hear what makes them great. These personalities are committed to actually using these gifts to serve a greater purpose.
SarahThere you go.
BrandiWait, did you guys have both? Did you both get yours emailed to you?
SarahYes
Rachaelno, this is just. I literally just clicked on the page. It says conclusion and there's like a gray box that.
BrandiOh, I had to get the email. I've got it here.
RachaelOkay, what do your gifts include?
BrandiMy fun facts, you mean? Oh, fun facts.
SarahI don't have a gray box on mine,
Rachaeloh, oh. So maybe I don't have fun facts, I just have gifts.
BrandiOkay, I don't. My fun facts came through the email which Kozy did. Need a job that gives them freedom to decide what they do and how they do it. Um, I would say I've got a lot of freedom. I I feel like with that one. I don't like micromanagers, so I feel like I've done that. I hate it. So I feel like that kind of pulls in there um considers themselves ambitious. Ambitious is my middle name. Resists social pressure. I would agree to that. Be high achievers and enjoy setting goals for improving themselves. I mean, we've talked about it, I am the goal setter,
Rachaelthe goal setter.
SarahYeah.
RachaelOkay. So if anybody is curious about this just where we found these tests, if they're legit or not
Brandiwe'll link them in the blog.
RachaelBut we took type a, type b personality test and we took the 16 personalities. So we'll link them in the blog so you can take some personality tests. And then we had started doing the enneagram as well, just to kind of get to know each other a little bit more. So we're planning on finishing that and just huddling internally to see where we were at on those results.
BrandiSo yeah, maybe we can put those in the blog.
RachaelYeah, we'll let you know what our enneagram results are because that's a whole another test
BrandiCheck out our blog to see our results for that
Rachaelabsolutely.
SarahAnd let us know who you relate to more.
RachaelYeah, I'm. What combination are you E-N-F-J for me?
SarahE-N-F-P,
Rachaelf-p. Oh yeah,
BrandiI'm E-N-T-J.
RachaelWoo-hoo,
Sarahnice, this is fun. This is a fun one.
