Beyond the DJ Booth
Fans, Fallacies, and AK-47s
Ever wonder if those viral social media "hacks" are actually legitimate? In this eye-opening episode, Joe and Brian put popular online claims to the test with their own hands-on experiment. Using three Starbucks cups and some freshly brewed coffee, they debunk a widely circulated video suggesting you're getting scammed when buying larger sizes. Their real-time experiment reveals the truth behind this viral claim and sparks a broader conversation about social media skepticism.
The duo then challenges each other with the fascinating "One-Note Challenge," where they attempt to identify popular songs from just a single sustained musical note. This test of musical knowledge demonstrates the incredible ear development that comes from decades of DJ experience, with Joe sharing how he recently stunned his son by correctly naming hundreds of tracks from just a few seconds of audio each.
In a shocking segment, Joe recounts a genuinely frightening experience from a recent gig where an uninvited guest appeared at a private party carrying serious firepower. This unexpected story highlights the unpredictable nature of event work and raises important questions about safety and quick thinking in potentially dangerous situations.
The episode rounds out with a practical "Gear Corner" featuring an affordable portable fan solution for sweltering summer gigs, plus expert advice on solving the persistent problem of tripping GFCI outlets during bass-heavy performances. Their technical troubleshooting reveals that sometimes the culprit isn't what you'd expect, saving listeners potential headaches at future events.
Whether you're a working DJ or simply fascinated by the behind-the-scenes realities of the industry, this episode delivers entertainment, practical solutions, and thought-provoking discussions about the unexpected challenges that arise beyond the DJ booth. what is up everybody? Welcome back to another edition, another episode of your favorite private event DJ podcast in the entire world beyond the DJ booth, booth, booth. What's up? I'm Joe Bunn. That's Brian D. Episode seven. Season four, episode seven. What is the math on that? 13 times three, three seasons is 39 plus seven. 46 episodes, 46. We'll hit 50 by the end of this batch. Batch day. It is a batch day. Welcome back to the show. Welcome back to the podcast studio, welcome back to just me and you. Really, they haven't gone anywhere if you think about it they haven't.
Speaker 1:I'm very proud of us. Yeah, we're staying consistent.
Speaker 3:Damn right, we are Every Wednesday. So Damn right, we are Every Wednesday. So social media how much of it do you actually believe? Do you believe a lot of what you read on there? Just curious Do you take it at face value or do you do your research? Like, how do you take things when you see something online If it's?
Speaker 1:something shocking. I usually try and go a little further than just this.
Speaker 3:What's further Comments?
Speaker 1:No, like Google, Like is this on actually any real news channels, as in like CNN, fox, nbc, whatever? Like I go to like USA Today, like a paper, like where is this coming from? Got it Okay? So I need to go a little deeper. Has this been reported by somebody other than like Instagram?
Speaker 3:Okay. So there's an account I follow on Instagram called Finance Vaults is the name of it. Okay, they usually have like really good advice, okay. So there's an account I follow on Instagram called Finance Vaults is the name of it. They usually have like really good advice, okay. But then I saw this little bit of a travel hack. I was a little suspect. Yeah, so, saquon, can you hit this video?
Speaker 2:This man proved how Starbucks manipulates you to spend more money with its cup sizes. He ordered a small coffee, then poured it into a medium cup. It filled it up. Then he poured the same coffee into a large cup. It filled it up again. This has to do with the circumference of the cup. The large cup is taller, but it's also very skinny at its lowest point. So whenever you buy a large, you're actually just getting a small.
Speaker 1:Dude, I've seen that video. Do you think it's real? Have you tried it? Tried it? I hope not, have you?
Speaker 3:apparently we're getting ready to do. I'm gonna give you the experiment right here. I had you buy me a legit tall coffee yes, you did I took two other cups that I've used over the last two days okay washed them out, so they're clean right, so we have tall ronde venti but what's your initial thought?
Speaker 3:do you think that this is the because? What? What I heard was? I looked in the comments. Some people say it's true, Some people say it's not. But they say it's because it's not ounces, it's fluid ounces, which apparently is different. I didn't go down the rabbit hole to know what the difference is between fluid ounces and ounces, but apparently there's a difference. I actually saw this at McDonald's too, I've seen it too.
Speaker 2:I've seen it at a fast food place. I've never tried it.
Speaker 1:I've never tried it either. The Venti, the tallest one out of these three. The bottom of it definitely looks smaller in circumference than the Grande. That's all I can see from this verbal viewing right here.
Speaker 3:But before you do it, do you think it's going to come true? I do not, okay, you go, I'll let you be the experimenter.
Speaker 1:Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay. So I've got the tall, tall on my right hand, the grande in my left hand, just for the people that don't have the video version, which it is a podcast, so I'm not sure why the hell brian decided to do this?
Speaker 3:because we got the video version?
Speaker 1:I'm just curious, because this could save you money the tall is now in the grande and it's an inch and a half from the top okay, so it's not a full grande? It's definitely not a full grande, to be fair. The tall was right near the top as you saw okay, this is an inch and a half from the top. Now I'm gonna pour the grande in the venti.
Speaker 3:It's way off three and a half inches, okay, so you're not getting hosed by starbucks. No, when I saw that, I was like man. If I've been spending all this money on grandes right, I could have been spending it for a tall.
Speaker 1:I think the ice factor is definitely hosing you at fast food places and whatnot. Okay, like an ice drink. Sure, you know what I mean.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, there's a line. There's a line where they have to fill up the ice too.
Speaker 1:Oh, really yeah, If you pay attention to it, they'll.
Speaker 3:My other thought is that maybe this is in Europe or some other country where maybe the cup sizes are different.
Speaker 1:I'm just guessing, or he just went uber viral on like a trick like crafty editing, yeah. Because, I've definitely seen the video. We just disproved it.
Speaker 3:Okay, so there you go.
Speaker 1:Which cup do you want it in, back in the little one? Sure, I'm actually glad we did this, though, because I I've seen that video and I was I was kind of pissed off about it too.
Speaker 3:Yeah, yeah, yeah, all right. Well, that was going to be a travel hack, but apparently it's not, so we'll just move, move right on, all right. So I got another internet trick for you. Okay, this is music related. Okay, I'm calling this the one note challenge. Have you seen?
Speaker 1:this. I do see that guy all the time, all right, so.
Speaker 3:I've got. What's that?
Speaker 1:guy's name. We should shout him out.
Speaker 3:No, I don't know.
Speaker 1:Damn it. He's great on Instagram. I think he's a DJ too right he might be. He is a DJ, is he? Yeah, okay, so I found five tracks Okay.
Speaker 3:So this first one in one note. Can you tell what track it is?
Speaker 1:Oh, I got it, it's Tom Petty. What song? I think it's Learning to Fly, maybe no.
Speaker 3:One more time.
Speaker 1:It can't be any louder than that, without feeding back, it's not Learning to back, it's not learning to fly, it's not All right, is it, tom Petty?
Speaker 3:It is Tom Petty. All right, I forget, I won't back down.
Speaker 1:Shit Okay, all right, so I'll give you a half a point.
Speaker 3:Okay, I'll take a half.
Speaker 1:Level two.
Speaker 3:Okay, oh Norris Barkley Crazy yeah, that's right, all right, so one for two, all right. Level three oh hey, soul sister train. Yeah, okay, all right, good, level four, let's see these are gonna get harder now. Toxic britney okay, all right, this last one. I don't know, I don't know if you can get this one One more time.
Speaker 1:That's tough. One more time. No, I don't have that one.
Speaker 3:You want to play it for you.
Speaker 1:Yeah, oh, okay, oh wow, my boy Justin Cry Me a River Cry.
Speaker 2:Me a River.
Speaker 1:I didn't hear that little rain splash. If I'd heard that, I would have known it's quick, yeah, that's tough.
Speaker 3:But anyways all right. Four for five.
Speaker 1:I'll give it to you 3.5 out of five.
Speaker 3:You're a DJ, so you should get those, Dude.
Speaker 1:We were sitting at home the other night and, for whatever reason, Davis had this rock playlist and I don't know if he made it Current rock. No, it was all over the place.
Speaker 3:Okay.
Speaker 1:And I bet there were 200 songs on there and we were just sitting on the couch and we were playing it through the Sonos and he was doing this. He was just going through them and it wasn't on the screen or anything. He's just playing it first couple seconds and I'm telling you, man, it went back to like the Stones you know, Sympathy for the Devil, 60s 70s To like Give it Away Now Chili Peppers, semi Charm Live. And I was going oh, semi Charm Live.
Speaker 1:Third Eye Blind he was like bro, you're the biggest sweat. How do you know this shit?
Speaker 2:I'm like dude, I've been a DJ for 40 years.
Speaker 1:Your dad knows music he was like how is it possible that you know this stuff? And I'm like this is all that I know.
Speaker 2:You know what I mean.
Speaker 1:I don't know anything else but this I bet he went through 200 just with a couple seconds of each. I probably missed three or four, wow.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it was nuts dude.
Speaker 1:You've heard me and Brian B talk about running a successful DJ business every week here on this podcast, but if you want more, you need the DJ's Vault. We're ready to move into the gear corner. I'm playing it. Okay, the gear's here.
Speaker 3:The gear yes, we got it. We got a stinger. Oh man, we got a segment. Yes, sir Stinger.
Speaker 1:A stinger Love it what you got.
Speaker 3:So I did a couple of weddings in July at the beach, so hot, ridiculous.
Speaker 1:We were there, we were right there with you, my friend Brutal. We did two in June, brutal.
Speaker 3:So I was looking for something to help me on those, and actually this is not only a gear find, it's a gear gift, a little gift for you.
Speaker 1:So I even left it in the packaging for you. Wow, go ahead and open it up. This is mine to keep yours, yours to keep. Handheld portable turbo fan. Got a little um strap. Yep, okay, let me get it out, hold on all right, let me take the um little wrapper off of it. It's a rechargeable. Yeah, sorry, I'm trying to get this little cellophane thing Okay.
Speaker 3:All right. So all you got to do is really just hit that first button. Oh, shoot, levels to it. Levels to it, quiet, and it has a tilt. So you just set it up in your ear.
Speaker 1:No, no, no.
Speaker 3:You use that strap around your neck.
Speaker 1:No.
Speaker 3:It's got the handles right on the left and right, so you just with it like that, I'm on the side. They don't hear I mean, I'm not going that over here, but bro, dude, when I'm out there sweating my fanny off, this thing is clutch ironically, I'm bringing in.
Speaker 1:I'm bringing in the another fan for the gear corner at some point as well okay, the one that we were using much more industrial obviously this is kind of clutch though.
Speaker 3:The strap. It hooks up to the side. I got one as well, so we're going to be matchy-matchy, wow bro. But it just hooks into those sides there and then just wear it on there and I go like this man just there. No one even really recognizes it. To be honest with you because they're just like.
Speaker 1:Whatever this is. So does it mess up your hair? No, no, the coif is is steadily dialed in, steadily there. Yo thanks, man. So this is nice, but I also think you could, you could, you could put it on your, your deck I mean on the command center. Yeah, it's kind of right there. Yeah, pointing it. I mean the tilt mechanism is clutch.
Speaker 3:I love it. What's pricing?
Speaker 1:I think it's $22.99. You're getting close, close.
Speaker 3:A little bit higher, okay $26.99. Okay, but not too far off $4 off.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I'm $4.
Speaker 3:But for a $25 purchase for something that's going to save your life in the humidity central.
Speaker 1:I love it, man Thank you and it's rechargeable.
Speaker 3:I think that's the most clutch thing, yeah. And it came with a cable, so you could actually, you know, like, one of the areas that I kind of freak out about even though the new Macs are good is like what if it's too hot and that thing is just needs to be cooled off?
Speaker 1:I could put this underneath the laptop and keep it. You could gaff it or just set it there. It's dude, I'll put this right in the toolbox. Yeah, great find. Yeah, love it, man. Thank you, there you go.
Speaker 3:I got a gift today you got some gigs coming up yes, we've.
Speaker 1:I've had gigs. Uh, I actually did a 50th birthday party for a friend of mine last weekend. She has had a rough go, is kind of coming out of uh, having breast cancer and turning 50 and I bet they called me a year ago and we're like we're throwing down. We want you no substitutes, no other bun dj people like this is at the beach no, it was in on winston-salem okay at their house tinted backyard thing. Definitely hot. How many guests? 85. Okay, great party. They threw down.
Speaker 3:And did they do any formalities? Or is this just a party? He did a welcome.
Speaker 1:He did a quick welcome Got a little bit emotional and you know I mean she was not well. Yeah, she looked great, feels great, healthy. No cake, no healthy. Yeah, no cake, no, nothing like that. They danced. They did a little joy of my life. Chris stapleton yeah, maybe minute and a half, and then I just went right into it. Okay, so the first couple hours people were just hanging out yeah, it was a cocktail party.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I was just playing the vibes. It definitely rained before people got there. You know rain's kind of going into the tent. Saquon's not there, I'm solo like I'm cussing him like all to be damned it's hot, you know, I mean I'm just like this guy. And then this friday I'm doing one of the carolina hurricanes players weddings here, in raleigh.
Speaker 3:That'll be cool okay, but you've done hockey players a lot of football players, hockey players, yeah is there any difference? Do you feel in the programming like, are you going deep into the sense of like, what do they play at the games?
Speaker 1:or any of that kind of stuff no I bet you would I, I, I mean, I feel like, uh, you could definitely get away with like I know they play rock you like a hurricane when oh yeah, see, that's one I would never play yeah I think you need to try rock you like a hurricane and just see if it goes off.
Speaker 3:I feel like I have to do. You have an edit for me? I don't, I don't, that's not scorpion, you don't just carry around Scorpions edits.
Speaker 1:Bro, let me tell you this story. I don't think I've even told Saquon this. This is one of the craziest things that's happened in forever. I don't know. This has happened until I'm packing up at this private party last weekend and I'm packing up in the tent and I got all the tubes and stuff still on and they didn't really have tent lighting and so it's kind of dark and they were like turn off all the lights. And I'm packing up my gear and I'm like what are you talking about? And they were like turn off all the lights now. And I'm like they're talking to you, yeah. And I'm like Are they like panicking? There's panic in the voice, what's going on? And they were like did you not see that guy? And I go what are y'all talking about? Some dude had rolled up to this party out of the woods with an AK 47 and a pistol and a full ammo belt on.
Speaker 3:This is in Winston Salem.
Speaker 1:At a fucking house. Wow, rolled up, he's got the AK. He's a neighbor, dude. I said Out of the woods, out of the woods, out of the woods. I said Chris, the guy in the house we grew up together, I'm like you know this Yahoo and he goes dude, I have no idea where he came from. He said he was looking for his dog. Bro, when I'm telling you he has a machine gun. I never saw any of this. I'm still playing. Nobody really sees it, chris, kind of started.
Speaker 1:This is in the middle of a party, at the very end, okay, sorry. Peak peak final, you know, thank y'all. Good night. Chris is dealing with the guy, finally, gets him in the car and drives him back somewhere.
Speaker 3:He drives him.
Speaker 1:Yes, Gets him out of there. Nah, hell, nah. I don't really know if they thought he was going to come back. Chris said he was pissed off. Blah, blah, blah. And I'm just now. Once I find this out, bro, I'm mad speeding. Now I'm really cussing Saquon because I got no help.
Speaker 2:I definitely said to be there.
Speaker 1:I'm throwing shit at the van like half-wrapped cables and I basically leave this dude's driveway going 75. Like just sure that this guy's in the woods getting ready to start popping off shots at a giant black van.
Speaker 3:So I'm punching it hit the road, cane road, like on two wheels and I just run into the hotel.
Speaker 1:Yeah, he's like some John Wick shit, dude. And so talked to him the next day. He said he finally called the cops because everybody was so sketched out. 14 sheriffs showed up arrest the guy. So I don't know if he told him where he lived. I you know, but, dude, it was crazy. They said full ammo, belt with magazines like you see like a soldier wearing rambo, yeah and a pistol on the hip, to a cocktail party.
Speaker 3:Yeah, well, why would he?
Speaker 1:Yeah, it seems so I don't know, bro, welcome to North Carolina. I was like, was he pissed off about the music?
Speaker 2:And this was not in the country.
Speaker 1:It was definitely outside the city limits of Winston-Salem, but there were plenty of other houses. It wasn't like we were. It's a neighborhood yes, but no, but space You're spaced out in between. Like those wedding venues we go to down like a long gravel road. You would have turned around, I would have been gone. Joe, I don't even know why I packed my gear.
Speaker 3:I should have come back the next day. Are you adding this to like the Bun DJ Co training?
Speaker 1:How to escape an active shooter. Jeez anyway.
Speaker 3:You're going to have to do some, like they do at my daughter's school. All the time they do these, like you know drills.
Speaker 1:Shelter in place yeah, just to like you never know crazy, crazy story.
Speaker 3:Can't say that that's ever happened.
Speaker 1:I first, for me too, I'm glad I didn't see the guy, but then I was like chris, where are your guns? Because, like we grew, up, we all have guns, like I have guns.
Speaker 1:I knew he had guns and he was like I don't want it to go there. I go if this ain't the time to get your gun out what time is it? And he was like I didn't really want to go there, I go if this ain't the time to get your gun out, what time is it? And he was like I didn't really want to go there.
Speaker 3:I'm like I think it's time to go there, yeah like go get your guns, and he probably had a few. He has a million.
Speaker 1:Everybody from wilson's got a million.
Speaker 3:I've got a million. No, I meant like drinks.
Speaker 1:Oh, he had a shitload of drinks I mean, I guess that's not a great idea but like I feel, like you sober up. If somebody rolls up on your property with a machine gun, I think you go sober quick.
Speaker 3:He must really like his dog if he's getting that strapped up.
Speaker 1:That's what I'm saying, dude, it was John Wick shit.
Speaker 3:That's crazy Anyway do we have a question? We do. I don't know how we segue this. I don't either.
Speaker 3:Hey Brian B here, sorry to interrupt your regularly scheduled podcast, but let's be real, you're here because you actually care about your DJ business and if you've been nodding along like yeah, I should totally step up my game, then let me make it easy for you. That's TheDJsCreativeEdgecom Because you know repetition works, and if you want to just lurk for now, hit up Instagram at the DJs creative edge.
Speaker 3:All right back to the show. Before Joe starts yelling in his extra thick North Carolina accent about how, back in his day, djs use CDs and still had to walk uphill both ways to a gig. Djs used CDs and still had to walk uphill both ways to a gig. Dj Jeffy Jeffy J from Cincinnati. I like that name. Hey Joe and Brian, how do you guys deal with GFCI outlets at venues? I'm running two EVZLX15 tops for most weddings and almost without fail, I end up tripping an outlet. Oh wow. Thankfully I'm smart enough to spread my setup across different outlets, but I've noticed when the bass kicks in for some songs the outlet seems to always trip. Thank you, damn you run into this. I have not Really I did. I was having it trip on the Evolve 50s.
Speaker 3:Where, at Just every venue, every venue I was going to. I just could not figure out what was causing it, because I never had that problem with those before and I'm like these aren't pulling that much, they're not, and I was distributing it amongst whatever. It still did it every time.
Speaker 3:So I finally I think I just put it on one of the facebook groups yeah, like what's happening here I had a firman power conditioner I know what you're talking about, yep, and apparently when you plug things into that, into these new c gfcis, they trip, wow, and I had no idea. So then I asked drew pierce, that's where I got those small little three prong. You know extensions that don't have the trip on it. Yeah, never had a problem same venues, never had an issue with it after that. So I'm curious if you're using one of those ones that have not just the Furman.
Speaker 1:But I'm just thinking normal strips, I use a really industrial trip light. I upgraded recently because I thought I had tripped out one of these. Turned out they had bad outlets on this wall in the venue.
Speaker 3:Well, that's why I kept blaming, I kept blaming all these outlets. I'm like dude, dude, fix your power, yeah like these shouldn't be tripping right right to come find out it was me, yeah, and I'm like. I don't understand, though the firmans like those shouldn't like. Those are like industrial as well.
Speaker 1:I have had that firman unit up until six months ago and played at a million venues and not had that problem so the issue is you can still use the Furman but not with the speakers.
Speaker 3:So if you plug in your wireless mic, your controller, you're not going to have.
Speaker 1:I had damn near everything plugged into that.
Speaker 3:See, I did too, and that's what caused this issue. It was like had no idea, had no problem, never since. So check your strip.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 3:And if you're using a Furman, don't use it for your speakers, or it might just not be rated right.
Speaker 1:Check the rating on it, yeah.
Speaker 3:I couldn't believe it.
Speaker 1:Yeah, for anybody that wants to know the link to that TripLite, just message us and we'll send you the link to the one I've used, because it's a huge upgrade. Is that a?
Speaker 3:It's a Gear Corner bonus Ben Stowe special it was Okay, it was. Yeah, yeah, so you can get it I got, I got mine on amazon.
Speaker 1:Actually I don't know that he did carry him okay but he was like you need a 200 watt or whatever it was. It was double the whatever the normal, yeah, cheapies are. All my gear is plugged into and the 90s go into it. Wow, because the I've got that patch panel. Patch panel goes into that right, and then that main cord is the one that basically goes to the wall and never had a problem.
Speaker 1:No, the one time I did was they had bad power Right On that particular wall on the venue, because I would mention it on the podcast. Remember I told you I lost power.
Speaker 3:But that wasn't because of the wall.
Speaker 1:It was because of the wall, oh I thought you said it was because of your cable. I thought it was too. And then Randy was driving to New York a couple weeks ago to see his mom and he calls me and goes I'm just finally catching up on the podcast. That shit on that wall happened to me. It's bad, you're talking about that, it wasn't you? Oh? And so I immediately get on the phone and text the people that run the venue and I say, hey, heads up. And they go. Oh, we know, we already replaced them all. Wow, yeah, randy said it happened to him twice on that wall.
Speaker 2:We never play on that wall.
Speaker 1:We played on every wall, but that wall, yeah, and it happened to both of us Interesting and it was because they were bad outlets. After 10 years they had gone. Bad Wow.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:It was not us.
Speaker 2:Yeah, we were freaking out.
Speaker 3:God, we were freaking out, yeah.
Speaker 1:Because it never happened. Want to wrap this one up.
Speaker 3:Yeah Well, we got to thank our sponsor.
Speaker 1:Shout out DJ Event Planner. It is the CRM that both of us use to run our DJ businesses DJEventPlannercom. Check them out and that's it. We'll see you guys in the next episode. See y'all every Wednesday. Thank you, bye.
