what's up everybody. Welcome back to the beyond the dj booth podcast. I am one of the co-hosts. My name is joe bond. That right, there is my guy, brian alexander bonafide. I forgot what your middle name is. Any guesses?
Speaker 2:michael, no I forgot keith baby keith, keith sweat. You know what I mean?
Speaker 1:I don't know if that's what it came from or what I don't know where he did it.
Speaker 2:That was a good artist. Actually, it was going to make my last list. What's that song like Freak, freaking you, freaking you? You ever play that? No, I love Keith Sweat, though that song when you drop it for the right crowd.
Speaker 1:I was more of a Jodeci guy than Keith Swe sweat. Anyway, welcome to the show everybody. This is the podcast for private event DJs. If you've never listened before, welcome. If you're been here since episode one, we appreciate you. Speaking of, this is the last episode of season four. You know what that means. 13 times four 52. Oh, how many weeks are in a year.
Speaker 2:Yeah 52. So we've done a full year. We did a full year kid. This was harder than I thought it was going to be, A lot more work than I thought it was going to be, too, Even with the batch Well the recording part's not.
Speaker 1:No, everything else, yeah, and you know why and no disrespect to Mike Walter, because we did it the right way we have the full three camera shoot. Yeah, we've got an engineer running the mics. Right, we are here in person. Right, we clip it up so that people get interested by watching the clips on social. Hopefully, we talk it up, we post the graphic, we you know what I mean. Everything we didn't do. I think we do and I am very excited and I rarely say that about going to some sort of a conference.
Speaker 2:I'm very excited about going to Dallas in a couple of weeks to this podcast convention.
Speaker 1:If you think the DJ industry is somewhat big, podcasting is like 100x, I would say.
Speaker 2:I mean, you got the big boys all there Spotify, sirius Radio, all those are sponsors, have booths. You think they're gonna sign us? Yeah, we can, we should. We have like a little uh press kit ready to go, just to see if they'll bring us on get us on a channel.
Speaker 1:Give us one of those 20 million dollar joe budden deal. I hate joe budden. Okay, I was thinking about this. Oh, what if? Like this would be dope. What if? And I don't think anybody would buy them, other than like at a DJ conference DJs had trading cards. Remember like? Did you ever get into trading cards when you were a kid? A little Like what was the sport?
Speaker 2:Baseball.
Speaker 1:Baseball yeah for sure.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 1:But what if DJs had trading cards and like or kind of like Pokemon cards? You know what I mean? Yeah, what would you put on there? What I mean like. What would you put on there, like?
Speaker 2:master of the hair. Um, oh, I don't know.
Speaker 1:Airport lounge access king probably something like that yeah like do you have anything off the top of your done?
Speaker 2:oh man I mean, I didn't know that they went like that crazy with I thought I feel like the there was.
Speaker 1:There was different brands, you know, there was like tops, some were like not funny, but like some were like super serious, and then some had more like stats and things like yeah, that's right I made one for you, though we'll put it up here on the screen.
Speaker 2:It's the last slide, I think there's your head. Wow, this is team bt, bt, djb beyond the dj booth open format specialist four hour set stamina, because you're the game like playing the ultra long b star. I don't know why it says b star. Chad g DBT made it to be fair. And then Brian B I like that. I like that. It looks pretty premium, doesn't it? It does look premium, it's a good-looking card.
Speaker 1:If you can't see it, you should probably be watching this on YouTube.
Speaker 2:I like it. You think this has got legs.
Speaker 1:Should we probably could have sold them at the like DJX show, yeah, but only like as a novelty thing, for like $4 or something. And then you open it up and like if you got like the scooter card like that was the Michael Jordan rookie card.
Speaker 2:It would have to be somebody. Go One shiny car. Did you ever do it though? Yeah, the shiny one, did you ever like I never got into it?
Speaker 1:No, okay, I never got into Pokemon. The Pokemon cards were made here.
Speaker 2:Oh, okay, I did not know that the actual OG ones that everybody wants were printed and made here.
Speaker 1:They're up there now, dude, they're crazy up there and the dude is stupid rich. Wow, he used to own that nightclub. When we had a nightclub or multiple nightclubs here, called the Office, randy played there. Okay, shout out to that guy. Whatever his name was Rick. I think his name was Rick Crazy.
Speaker 2:Anyway, I like it, I like the idea though.
Speaker 1:There's your card your trading card.
Speaker 2:So I was looking up music this week and our boy Trego the DJ, yeah, shout out, trego Sent me this screenshot of this album from K-pop.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I see this trailer always pop up on my netflix, but I haven't watched it, okay so I was like he's like are you playing any of this?
Speaker 2:yet he's like you need to listen to the soundtrack. I'm like, no, I'm not. This is like weeks ago. I'm like, no, I'm not playing it. Nobody's requesting it. I'm not really into. Yeah, k-pop on the regular, sure. And then this week I looked at the charts. Have you seen the charts?
Speaker 1:recently, don't't tell me, multiple songs.
Speaker 2:Look at this. They're number 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, and then, if you go one more 12. So six of the top 12 songs on Spotify right now On the top 50 USA, top USA are all K-pop.
Speaker 1:Demon Hunters Are they different artists? I don't see very well at a distance.
Speaker 2:Is it different artists?
Speaker 1:It's a couple of the same artists and then a couple different ones, like this. Like we want to load it up, we do so.
Speaker 2:This song specifically okay, I have to preface it my daughter. We were watching tiktok the other day and she was singing this song as it was coming on. I'm like what? How do you know the song? Well, she sits there and plays all these songs. I'm like, oh my god, I've gotten to the point now where she's starting to be up on music ahead of me.
Speaker 1:This is insane.
Speaker 2:So this is like their number two song of the chart.
Speaker 1:What is number one up there? I can't see it. The Subway, it's golden.
Speaker 2:Oh no, number one is Subway by Chapel Roan. Oh right, which are you playing that one? No song has taken over, like it's it's massive. Listen to the vocal, because the vocal this is a hard song to sing. This reminds me of like a chapel ronk is like not everybody could cover this.
Speaker 1:What is happening to music right now? I don't know. I mean, it sounds like 2001,. Like bad.
Speaker 2:I don't know, it's crazy.
Speaker 1:It's so many things going on that works for it. It's catchy.
Speaker 2:I mean I get that. It's got the four on the floor, it's got the EDM thing going on, and then I mean it's K-pop. Are you?
Speaker 1:listening. I mean, has anybody said play this? Not yet.
Speaker 2:I mean, I have a K-pop type of wedding coming up in the fall. So I'm I'm like I'm shocked that it's taking up that many spots.
Speaker 1:It's unbelievable. It's like when somebody huge drops a record and it takes over like 12 of the top 20 spots.
Speaker 2:I mean, I haven't seen a record do this in a long time, have you? I mean maybe Chapel, then I think maybe three tracks at the time, not six, of 12 a bieber did it when he dropped a few weeks ago.
Speaker 1:I don't know how long it stayed like okay, he's still number seven.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's like, yeah, he has got daisies, daisies great song.
Speaker 2:But I mean again, not, it wasn't a dance record, so but the thing that's interesting about this phenomenon too is like I feel like for kids music it's trending towards faster, bigger beats like tempo wise we're in the 130s to like 140s. There's another one called uh, skibbity toilet yeah, have you heard of that one? Oh man, my daughter's all about this track, so and it's like 150, like in the bpm range. I'm like it's just crazy super fast, and all of the kids ones are doing that. Where I feel like for older folks, put myself in that category. Yeah, it's not that fast. Like we're hearing more down tempotempo stuff, would you agree?
Speaker 1:Man, I don't know. I mean, you know, my kids are just at 20 and 17,. You know, and they're completely different musically now, Okay, I mean. I'm not hearing anything trendy.
Speaker 2:Got it.
Speaker 1:You know what I mean. If I hear anything trendy, it would usually be from one of Ashley's girls. One of Ashley's girls. You know what I mean? That off TikTok or Instagram. So Colin don't be putting you on no more.
Speaker 2:Colin is way off Because he used to be on it.
Speaker 1:He's underground man, he's he's the Cemetery Blade, all these like Norwegian white rappers and like it's just stuff that you don't know and he doesn't know. And you know what I mean and I'll be like, like and he doesn't know, and you know what I mean and I'll be like, like. I mean he knew that guy Yeet before he had 20,000 followers on Instagram. Okay, that guy was one of the biggest rappers there is right now he just dropped.
Speaker 1:It's pretty good, I mean he was on Yeet before anybody even knew who Yeet was. He's five years ahead of most people country lately. You know what I mean? Wow, and it just he jumped off the hip-hop train. He's like it. It was either drake or country or wherever the girls are like the other night he goes two days ago, yesterday.
Speaker 1:He goes I'm going to see kesha, and I go what? And then I go you're going to see kesha? And I go. He goes yeah, and then about two hours later ashley's daughter comes downstairs and goes this is what I'm wearing to the kesha show and again, you know they're great a part of it and I go.
Speaker 2:Now it makes sense why he's going to the kesha show, like all the girls are going to the kesha show. Yeah, you know what I mean.
Speaker 1:It was just like I totally get it if I had lived in raleigh when I was younger and there was, all these bands were coming through. Yeah, I lived in wilson small town.
Speaker 2:Yeah, there wasn't shit to do, but man, he just.
Speaker 1:It all made sense when I was like oh, all the girls in LA right now that go to his high school are definitely going to be at that show.
Speaker 2:He's like I'm going Well. I asked Trego back to this K-pop thing I go. Are there any tracks on this album that would be worth playing at a wedding? And he said the song Soda Pop, which is number four on the charts right now. He said For Doors Open.
Speaker 1:He said for doors open. So I got a sample. Ass man dude, I'm not playing that shit. I would play it if it was on the must play list. I would never play that. I hate it.
Speaker 2:I'm going so far as to say I hate it. Golden is trending on social media like crazy, so this is a clip from like what you would see on social media right now, and my daughter's all about it. It says what does it say there? Bro has been singing this for 20 minutes straight.
Speaker 1:Is he really singing that? I think he is actually, that's actually not bad yeah.
Speaker 2:But like that clip, that chorus is on every TikTok now Everybody's trying to do it. There's some funny ones. You have to check it out. I'm sure it's going to get over there. You know what's on every one of my reels.
Speaker 1:Nothing beats a jet to holiday. It's like when something goes wrong on like a vacation. Add and it's a real clip from like a commercial. Yeah, nothing beats a jet to holiday like this something.
Speaker 2:It's like it's british lady, I don't know anyway, brian b here, yes, interrupting yet another stellar podcast episode. But don't worry, this is a value ad, not just me rambling. Have you enjoyed the music finds I share on here? You know the ones that Joe pretends he discovered first. Well, if you didn't know, I've got a Patreon where you can grab not only song lists but also exclusive edits of mine Yep, custom tracks. That'll set you apart from every DJ still rinsing the same tired wedding set. Want fresh music suggestions every month? Go to patreoncom forward. Slash DJ Brian B official. Again, that's patreoncom forward. Slash DJ Brian B official. You'll be the DJ. Everyone's trying to figure out how you keep your sets so fire and planners will start nudging their couples your way. And if that's not a hard enough sell, I don't know what is All right. Back to the episode before. Joe tries to convince us that Sweet Caroline is actually a banger. So we got a lot of style questions.
Speaker 1:We got inundated.
Speaker 2:Yes, I don't know what's going on in the world of clothing for weddings, but I took four of them and put them all in one so we can knock it out, cause they're all pretty much the same question. So the first one's from Brian, I wanted to know either. Okay, from Cedar falls, iowa, white shoes at a wedding. Second one Russell Davis says I agree, here we need an overall outfit discussion for a wedding. And then, david, trade goes with matching white Neo style hat.
Speaker 1:I think that was a joke, okay.
Speaker 2:And then Trago says what are your thoughts on performing the ceremony not in your formal attire and then changing during cocktail hours so that you're fresh for the reception? If so, what do you wear instead of a suit? These are great. You want to go first?
Speaker 1:no, I'll let you go all right, white shoes at a wedding. I mean white shoes, no white sneakers. Yes, I would never, ever be caught dead in a pair of goddamn Cousin. Eddie Clark, I got you a pair of these. I know you like mine, you know like a pair of like Stacey Adams.
Speaker 1:I was about to say Stacey Adams like patent leather white shoes, absolutely not A pair of really nice. I've got two wildly different price ranges for you. One is by a company called the Greats. I think they're marketed in Brooklyn but they're made overseas. Just a plain white sneaker by the Greats. Or if you want to be super bougie Janai or Joe Bunn style, you would wear the Christian Louboutins simply because they have a red bottom on them. But if you go, look at the price, you're going to realize how dumb me and Jason really are.
Speaker 2:Yeah, if you go look at the price, you're gonna realize how dumb me and jason really are. Yeah, um, and you wear them regularly. What makes you decide if you're wearing white sneakers, just the outfit? Oh, I wear them every show now, every show. Yeah, white sneakers, yeah, interesting.
Speaker 1:No, I take that back if I was gonna wear a tan suit or I needed to be a little more conservative yeah, yeah older crowd, 90 of the time. Colorful suit, white sneakers, and I've started asking the planner what are their colors. And then she'll go dark green, yeah, or whatever, and I'll wear the dark green suit. Light purple I got a light purple suit, you know pink got a pink suit, like yeah and then the white sneakers.
Speaker 1:Well, uh, I think the white hat is just a uh homage to when neo would wear the fedora yeah, are you wearing for?
Speaker 2:I mean because you got a head? No, I don't have I never wore fedora.
Speaker 1:Fuck a hat. Um, russell davis overall outfit discussion for a wedding. I'll just say this russell, the sneaker thing is neither here nor there. I'm going to tell you what some people are doing wrong. There are very few sneakers that look good with a suit. I know y'all are watching sports center and think that you're Shaquille or Ernie whatever his name is, or one of those guys Number one. You're not Number two. The sneakers that you are wearing look really bad. The fact that you're still wearing Yeezys period is just crazy.
Speaker 1:I'm sorry, man, the Jordan 1 Highs. I've got a hundred pairs. They do not look good with a suit. Like, you need to really be careful on the suit choice with sneakers. I'll just say that, first and foremost. What about, uh, air force ones? No, no, they look like shit. Man, the sole's too thick. I could, I don't. I don't want to take this podcast down a dark hole, but I'm I'll just say this suit wise. I'm not saying you have to go out there and spend ten thousand dollars dude I have a white pair of sneakers yes, h&m.
Speaker 2:They cost me twenty dollars. You know why? Because I mean out in the freaking grass or rain.
Speaker 1:They're gonna get destroyed clean them up every once in a while I can replace them is that makes the best cleaner?
Speaker 2:but they, but they work they.
Speaker 1:they're playing their plant. That's what they need to be. Yeah, and I'm not sitting here preaching about the price of the shoe, right, I'm more preaching about the style of the shoe. And then, in terms of suits, I will say this Stop buying off-the-rack suits. Yes, because you can get custom-made suits at Indochino. You can go to your local Nordstrom or if you have an Indochino store in your city, they measure you one time and then you're-.
Speaker 2:Do they have one here?
Speaker 1:Yeah, in Nordstrom, okay, and you can see every one of the fabrics for all the shirts, all the suits. You can literally say I want that suit, measure me, and then, unless you lose a bunch of weight, which I did so I've had to go now to the tailor in my neighborhood and get all of them cinched in in the back. Custom liner name on the inside fits like a dream, you know how. Do you want the pockets? What do you? What color do you want the buttons like? What color do you want the lining? Do you want them pleated? Do you want them cuffed? Do you want them like every single thing? And now you can just do it online. Yeah, because my measurements are in the system, so they'll have a sale and I'll flip through the colors. Be like I don't have that color, so I may have 10 suits, all from indochino. Different colors some super conservative black, yeah, blue, tan and then some purple, pink, you know, carolina, blue and dude it's. It is literally the best thing that I've ever done was to invest in custom stuff instead of buying off the rack and then sitting there taking it to a tailor trying to get them to fix it.
Speaker 1:And then the last thing about trego over 10 years ago, especially being in the South, I looked at my guys and I said we're not wearing suits to do the ceremony anymore. Number one we don't want to do the ceremony in the first place. Number two we're not sound guys, but we've been tasked with it. Number three it's stressful as shit and hot and sweaty and it makes me nauseous. Every we wear a company polo, small logo embroidered right here, the dry fit Nike style whether they're Nike or not, is neither here nor there.
Speaker 1:And then the slacks that go with your suit. So if I had on a dark suit, I would normally almost always wear a white company polo. Saquon, just like the one he has on today, has on a black one or a white one, with a pair of slacks as well. And then, as soon as cocktail hour starts and we start that playlist, I'll go in the bathroom and put on a suit. I haven't worn a tie in probably two or three years, but again, please make sure your button downs fit Like. They need to be from, they need to be custom, they need to be Indochina.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:And they need to be white and they need to be. They don't need to be dry cleaned. When the collar starts to get dirty, throw them in the fucking trash yeah like please stop going out there, looking like shit.
Speaker 2:The light blue, white polos. Are they showing you pitting it out, or what do you?
Speaker 1:I mean the white doesn't the light blue could yeah if you were really sweating you you could see on that. I mean I, I advise white, multiple white, and when they get dirty just throw them away. You know what I mean. Like have a few them. We buy them every year for my guys. We just get new ones hey, what size are you guys? And we just make a bulk order of polos with the brand on it.
Speaker 2:I'll say two things. One, I don't care what career you're in, it doesn't matter the way you dress. The people who are making the most money dress the part. Yeah, whether it's real estate, it doesn't matter. Like you got to dress the part. So if you want to make more money, you need to be looking the part that you're worth that. And I think people sometimes undervalue the dress thing because you know they don't want to spend the money. Who knows? There's various reasons and I just would tell you that image is everything. I know people who couldn't mix themselves out of a paper bag, but they're charging a mint because they look the part. Yeah, so it can mask things at times, maybe for better or for worse, but, like, you got to dress the part. If you want to make the money and we're not talking about a ton of money, I mean for me, I've got fitted suits that last two or three years.
Speaker 1:Oh yeah, for sure.
Speaker 2:So I mean, my weight isn't changing that much, obviously, height isn't, or anything like that.
Speaker 1:So look to your point those things and you rotate them right. It's not like you're wearing the same suit every single weekend and it's just going to get worn out. But I mean after a couple of years, swap them out Right. Go get a new one.
Speaker 2:And the last thing I'll say about this with Trego's question I don't wear the polo. I go long sleeve black because I am sweating my arse off. That's why I asked about the pitted out thing and I just don't want to be. It doesn't show interesting, I don't notice.
Speaker 1:you mean a button down is button down, but it's, it's a cool fabric, okay, and the other reason for that?
Speaker 2:hands, uh, black pants. So I look like a tech guy yeah to your point.
Speaker 2:Well, that's where you are so I'm like, and some people don't even know I'm the dj yeah, after I've switched right, because they're like, you know, same you know, or whatever, right. But the reason why I also do that is in case I spill anything on the shirt, I've got a black one. It's a backup. Yes, it's maybe a little sweaty from being outside, but I've got an extra just in case. So it's just easy for me and those. I don't even have to like dry clean them all the time. I mean I put them in the wash. They're black, it's like super easy.
Speaker 1:I do not advocate wearing a suit of any sort. I don't care if it was fall, spring, summer during the ceremony. You are a tech person. You have been given a role as an AV specialist, none of which any of us wanted to do when we became DJs. But when people stopped going to church and started getting married on the property, that became our job. And if you're not taking that part of the job, you're not going to get the dance part. It's just period. I don't want to do it, I have to do it. Djs real talk. Are you tired of trying to figure out the DJ business alone, struggling with pricing, bookings or just how to stand out? Speaker 2:We do have the gear corner, okay, so I'm just going to hit it up real quick.
Speaker 1:Let's do it the gear's here. We do have the gear corner, okay, so I'm just going to hit it up real quick. Let's do it the gear's here.
Speaker 2:The gear is here, what you got for me, so last time we talked about you brought it up the Lasco fan. Yeah, I love the Lasco and I asked you. I said do they make them in white? You're like I don't know, but I told you I need to get it in white, so I've purchased it. No, wow.
Speaker 1:Is it still Alaska, a little bit of black? No, it's not.
Speaker 2:But it looks just like it. Yeah, does it do the? But, what I like about it is I'm facing it here, so this is the imagine the speaker. You're looking at it on the side. Some people see me on the side, so there is the black right, but this is pointing at me. Yeah, yeah, yeah, but when it's facing the people, the audience, they're only seeing the white portions of it.
Speaker 1:Okay, and I mean it's three minutes. There's a couple.
Speaker 2:You didn't mention the bonus, yeah yeah, I was going to mention it so we got the, we got the two plugs on the back, on the back and you know the copper looking kind of thing rose gold knob on the back for speed. Yeah, and what would you think the price on this bad boy is? This is not on amazon, by the way. Oh, I had to go to I think it's called costway is the name of it. I mean, it's heavy duty. For reference, you had said that the last last go was 59 yeah, 59.
Speaker 2:what do you think this one goes for in white? 69.69.95? $54.99. It's cheaper than the black Wow. Anyway, if you're looking to matchy-matchy your white speakers which this is I'm just telling you. It does stand out if you don't have it underneath the booth. If it's to the side, now that I'm in white, people are going to be like, wow, this guy thinks about everything he's custom. Get it out costway, c-o-s-t-w-a-y, I'll put. You're not going to get any affiliate level.
Speaker 1:No, no love that's okay, that's okay, I'm helping them. We do it for the kids, we do it for the fans so why don't you thank our sponsor and we'll get out of here.
