Big stages magnify everything...the wins and the wipeouts.

In this episode, we break down awards season through a DJ lens: the Golden Globes walk-on music debate, the Grammys stacked with performances (and a few brutal tech gremlins), and a Super Bowl halftime set that balanced spectacle with cultural impact. What makes a song “make sense” on a big stage? And how do you translate that kind of contextual precision to a packed dance floor?

We dig into the craft behind walk-on cues: when to go clever, when to default to instrumentals, and how to keep energy high without stealing focus from the host. The Grammys become a production clinic: why ambitious staging multiplies failure points, and why tight, simple execution often beats spectacle.

Then we zoom in on real DJ disasters: from a full PA dropout at a pregame party to speakers tapping out mid-event. We unpack the safeguards working DJs should build into every show: confidence monitors, clear hand signals, redundancy planning, and having someone who can communicate fast when the unexpected hits.

We also debate whether halftime performances actually shift requests, how cultural moments translate (or don’t) to private events, and how to test trending tracks without derailing the room. Add in real-world road upgrades - gear, prep strategy, and travel logistics - and this becomes less recap and more field manual.

If you care about contextual song choice, production risk, resilience under pressure, and avoiding your own DJ disaster, this one’s for you.

Follow the show, share it with a DJ friend, and drop a comment with your go-to walk-on track.  What’s your current clutch pick and why?

SPEAKER_08:

What's up everybody? Welcome back to Beyond the DJ booth with your host, Joe Bun, and your other host, Mr. Brian Bonacisi Jr.

SPEAKER_10:

Dude, they used my full name at the NACE meeting. And they got it right, I thought. Oh, that they may have. I didn't even pay attention. I was talking with so much tech, I wasn't even paying attention to the intro. But we won't go there. I don't want to start negative.

SPEAKER_08:

It wasn't my fault. We had you. It wasn't you. To be fair, when you when you hook up your computer and then somebody comes behind you and hooks it up and then hooks theirs up and then expects yours to go back, you can guarantee it's gonna be a shit show. Yeah. But before we get started, I had that on my list of things to talk about. Bro, you killed that shit. Oh I know you didn't have like all your notes and you like you know didn't have your like couple of little stingers or stories or haha funny lines. But man, I'm telling you, Brian, uh I am on the programs committee for Triangle NACE, which is National Association of Catering and Events. You guys have heard me relentlessly talk about how important it is to be a member of this organization if they have a chapter anywhere near you. Anyway, I'm on the board now on the programs committee, and we just took over and we did not have anything for February around December. And we were like panicking to find a venue, panicking to find a speaker. I'm like, look, I got somebody local and he will crush. And they don't like Brian has only been here, what, three years? So he's not known in Raleigh like I am. And and again, he's on a plane every week. His shows are in Florida, New York, California, blah, blah, blah. And they were like, Man, are you sure? I'm like, dude, trust me, this dude's gonna crush. And they gave him he gave us like four or five topics that he he could do. And he did was it building an unshakable pricing model? Yeah. Is that the title? I'm telling you, man, everybody in that room, I probably we had about 75 people. We have 75 to 100 at every meeting, and they came up to me after one, like, your boy killed. So good. Thank you, man. So you made me look good. And and honestly, man, I was sitting there at the back of the room listening, and I'm and even though I do this, you know, and we'll sit here and record all day and we hang out and whatever. I still was sitting there, like, man, if I didn't know this guy, I would still be like, hell yeah. Yeah. You know what I mean? Like, there were people taking notes, there were people that had their phones taking screen grabs. That's when you know you're connecting. Yeah. And you were doing it.

SPEAKER_10:

I never did see anybody take a bathroom break, so that's kind of always a good sign. Yeah. They don't bounce out or take a ball.

SPEAKER_08:

The only I saw one person leave when you went into QA because it looked like she had to go and probably had a babysitter or something. Yeah. Had to get home, but that was it. Yeah. And that's how you know you're doing it. And I saw very few people, you know, under the table texting or like scrolling Instagram or whatever. Like it was really good, man. It was cool. Good job. Well, thanks for having me. That was awesome.

SPEAKER_10:

Oh, yeah. Well, let's thank some of our friends. We got some new uh back room members. Let's do it. Can we start off? I'm gonna start with the first one because I see the second one and I'm gonna let you take a crack at that one. Uh Brad Park, thanks for joining uh our back room at the Patreon.

SPEAKER_08:

Sorry, the screen is like behind the camera. Anthony Govazdin. Anthony Govazdin. I love that. Well done. Who else? Who else? Chris McMahon. Yep. Our boy Kevin Nichols, and then our boy Wyatt Hill. Wyatt Hill. Wyatt Hill. Love that. Good stuff, good stuff.

SPEAKER_10:

Um so I'm doing some prep for this and came up with some new bits or new new takes on and for the segment. New bits, like a new segment? Yeah, well, take on new bits.

SPEAKER_08:

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_10:

For the transcriber out there that's bits with a B. Just want to make sure in case uh anything gets kind of messed up here. But this is uh a take on Can You Find the One? So we'll play that bumper.

SPEAKER_06:

Can you find the one? Don't find all right.

SPEAKER_09:

So new take on Can You Find the One. It's always been with the drums. Yeah.

SPEAKER_10:

Now we're gonna change it up a little bit. Okay. I got a song for you. Okay. Well-known song. We're gonna use uh Watermelon Sugar by Harry Styles. But you know how like uh where it comes in out of the verse and then it goes hi, you know, right into the chorus? Yeah. So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna play a little bit of the verse. You'll see the actual lyrics on here. Okay. I'm not asking you to sing the melody if you want to sing it, great. Okay, but I fade out the music towards the middle of the verse. Yeah. So you have to keep singing it in rhythm until it gets to the high, and then you'll hear the hear it come in. Oh, this is tough. I'm a terrible singer. I think it is.

SPEAKER_08:

And my voice is cooked, as you can tell.

SPEAKER_10:

Yeah. So this these are the lyrics. It'll be.

SPEAKER_08:

By the way, time out. Okay. Bucket list. Not bucket list seeing Harry Styles. Going to Madison Square Garden. You know, he's doing a 30 show run at Madison Square Garden. No. Yeah, 30 shows. Which is at Madison Square Garden. Oh, in just at Madison Square Garden. Wow. Are you gonna go? Yo, we got disco pit tickets. There's only 300 people in the little circle right there by Harry. Wow. I'm so hyped, bro. It's when is it? Um, two days before my birthday, September 23rd. Wow. Madison Square Garden, Harry Style. Have you ever been to Madison Square Garden? No, that was what I'm saying. That's the bucket list.

SPEAKER_10:

Yeah. Styles is a bonus. I mean, I love Styles, but you're gonna love it. Yeah. That's a great place to go. And the fact that you can just walk there. Yeah. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_08:

Stay at a hotel and get a hotel rec from you from nearby. Oh, yeah. Walk over there.

SPEAKER_10:

That's the move. Turn up. I'm in the disco pit, VIP. That's the move. Shit. That's the move. Okay. So the first two lines will be with him singing. Got it. And then you're on your own once you get to. And so kind of keep it in time, and we're gonna see if you get it to where it says sugar high. Okay. You ready? So first take. Okay, this is before the last word. Yeah. I love this song. Alright, here we go.

SPEAKER_05:

And it sounds like a song. Yeah. I want your belly in the summer feeling. I don't know if I can watermelon sugar.

SPEAKER_08:

Oh, what a feeling is damn close. I didn't know that was the line of that fourth line. I don't know if I could ever go without.

SPEAKER_10:

Yeah, it was damn close. You want to try it again? You want to give you a take two? Yeah. Bring it up a little bit more, say go on if you can. Take two. Okay. I mean, I want you to go crazy when you get to that shit. You don't have to whisper here.

SPEAKER_06:

On a summer evening. And it sounds just like a storm.

SPEAKER_05:

I want your belly and a summer feeling. I don't know if I can.

SPEAKER_08:

No, I'll blow it. What a melon sugar. Hi. It's hard.

SPEAKER_07:

It is hard.

SPEAKER_08:

I don't that that that fourth line is what throws you, I think. Yes, it is. I know there's a pause.

SPEAKER_10:

Last time. Let's go.

SPEAKER_08:

No.

SPEAKER_10:

Can I hear? No, I I I mean that's where you gotta kind of just like almost like two. Okay. That's where the beat is.

SPEAKER_07:

Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_10:

Do the third one. One more time. You're a drummer, bro. You gotta keep that kick.

SPEAKER_06:

Tastes like strawberries. On a summer evening. And it sounds just like strawberry.

SPEAKER_05:

I want jumber. And the summer feeling. I don't know. Oh without watermelon sugar. Ha.

SPEAKER_07:

I must have picked it too. You didn't pick it up. You didn't. I can hear it. Damn it. Well, you're a still cross. We'll get you on another one. We'll get you on another one.

SPEAKER_10:

It's a good bit. Alright, alright. So there we go.

SPEAKER_08:

Hi for the singing. It's not good. My voice is destroyed from that Dallas trip. I don't know when we're gonna talk about that.

SPEAKER_10:

Oh, it's coming. Okay. So let's go to the pop culture a minute. Brian B. Joe Bun. Dropping heat just for fun.

SPEAKER_06:

Pop talk spinning like a record spine.

unknown:

Woo!

SPEAKER_06:

Pop culture class where the stories collapse. Two DJs bringing the flavor we're a while.

SPEAKER_10:

So, dude, um, it's been awards season. Yes. So and we we haven't patched in a while, so we're we're way behind. So we're gonna we're gonna have to catch up. We're gonna talk about the Super Bowl. Oh, all that. Yeah, it's all in this mix. Okay. So it's goal on this episode? Yeah. God dang it. So the Golden Globes happen. And I'll put this picture up here. This DJ totally got roasted for playing some of this stuff. I actually thought it was pretty good. I have a clip here. Do we know this guy? I don't. I don't even know if that's him. I'm guessing. Oh. I think they just picked a random, but maybe not. It does have the Golden Globes picture. So maybe it is him. DJ Max. Sorry to shout you out. But it's on the hold on.

SPEAKER_07:

Stop. Before we even get into that. Number one, whoever's editing this, put the fucking picture up. Number two, that's the TJ Maxx logo. Right there. Look on his left. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, I got it. No, but he changed the TJ part to DJ. Oh, I didn't even notice that. Yes, that's the exact same logo as TJ Maxx with the DJ.

SPEAKER_10:

Wow played.

SPEAKER_07:

Jeez. Is it? I don't know.

SPEAKER_10:

Well, is that a tone arm too with the J? Yeah. Kind of a tone arm? Well, if you didn't see the Golden Globes, there's a I took this clip from social, so go ahead and hit it.

SPEAKER_03:

Whoever was DJing, I must have a word because the music that played, I couldn't believe my ears. It was like 2010's pop hits. I was like, am I at a Sweet 16? Am I at a Bot Mitzvah? Like, what is happening? Oh, best movie, one battle after another. We found love in a hopeless place. I'm like, what why are we picking these songs? Some of them made sense. Judd Apatow coming out to A Pitza was like clearly a decision made. But then there was just some that you were like, why the f is this song playing? I'm so sorry. 24 Carat Magic. Like, I know. It was DJ Earworm. It was United States of Pop. It's like we have the music plus the announcing. Like it was, it was a lot.

SPEAKER_02:

The two minutes of yeah, while Stell and Skarsgard came from the rafters to get on stage filled quite enough of air time. I mean, poor guy.

SPEAKER_00:

Oh my God, that killed me.

SPEAKER_10:

So if you didn't see some of these, yeah, hit the hit the next one.

SPEAKER_00:

Mel Brooks, the 99-year-old man, and my Pilates instructor, please welcome Judah Pazel.

SPEAKER_07:

I thought that was genius. I mean, that one's good. Yeah. Well, thank you. Thank you. Everyone's kind of giving it.

SPEAKER_10:

And then the one that creates everyone did he um recognize it? I'm guessing because he just started laughing right there. Okay. But the one that everyone talked about is this next one.

SPEAKER_02:

It's been 35 years since I've been to the gold.

SPEAKER_10:

So like he made the connection that it's been 35 years since he's done by the return of a map. Which I thought was like super cool. That one now.

SPEAKER_08:

I don't know. I mean, so what's your guy a genius?

SPEAKER_10:

Or is he just there's an art to this? A hundred thousand. You know what I mean? Yes. And I will talk about it when we get to a gear segments later on down the road. Not gear segments, but like uh story time when we talk about gigs. But like I am trying to find connection points like that. I don't think they have to always be on the nose like that. Right. But the songs you play have to make sense in in some respects.

SPEAKER_04:

You know what I mean? I think people are just thrown off by like, you know, most times it's just like a band playing or something, right? You know, real soft jazz or something.

SPEAKER_08:

Orchestral, right?

SPEAKER_04:

It just kind of threw people off, maybe.

SPEAKER_08:

I think so too. But uh but to be fair, also, I think, especially like when we even do our conference or whatever, we always ask right what do you want to do? What do you want to walk-up song to be? And I I'm assuming they did not do that.

SPEAKER_10:

I have never seen them do that for something like this before. Like I don't think they're calling up, you know, uh McCauley and go, hey, what do you want to hear? Right.

SPEAKER_09:

Because they don't know that they've won.

SPEAKER_08:

Oh, that's true, too. This is an award show. I for me, man, when I don't know the people or don't have something just totally topical, whether it's about the theme of the award or that person's name or something like that, I'm I'm going instrumental, like we've talked about before. Yeah. And it now it may be a banging instrumental, but I'm going, I'm not going, like he said, like a symphony type thing. Right.

SPEAKER_10:

And I'm not either, because I do feel like stuff like this keeps the energy. Five-hour, you know, show like this up for the people who are there.

SPEAKER_08:

Yes, but I don't know that I'm going vocal We Found Love or 24K Magic. I can see you doing We Found Love. You know, I love that.

SPEAKER_10:

When they said that, I was like, did you play this? So I thought for sure. They they did a roast one though. This actually happened at the Grammys. I don't know if you caught it, but roll this next clip for this guy. Oh, I saw that. Harry Styles comes out to play with the city. Where's my husband?

SPEAKER_07:

Well, no, I'm I think it was.

SPEAKER_08:

How do you read it?

SPEAKER_10:

They're like questioning his sexuality?

SPEAKER_08:

No, I'm reading it as the a female programmed this and was like, I'm in love with this dude. Oh. Because like when I saw this clip, the girl sent this clip and goes, Whoever picked this as Harry Styles' walkout song, yeah. I hope you have a restful night's sleep and your pillow is extra comfy. Like she loved her for it. Really? That I mean, that's the way I would get it. Okay. Well, there has been questions about like, is he gay?

SPEAKER_10:

Is he not? Like, they don't know.

SPEAKER_08:

Sure, sure, sure. Well, anyways. He's with Zoe Kravitz now.

SPEAKER_10:

Oh, is he? Okay. I didn't know that. I don't follow him that closely. I mean, she's a she's a oh, she's a smoke show. Yeah. Um, so what we're gonna do is I am going to put together a pack of stingers that I typically play. Woo! Shouldn't have probably said it this way, but it'll be part of the winky wink bonus content. Where? Potentially. Where? I'll let you kind of take it from here.

SPEAKER_08:

In the Patreon.

SPEAKER_10:

But you gotta be a backroom member. It's not just for anybody on that Patreon.

SPEAKER_08:

You gotta go with the 1990 none. Yeah. Her month membership, patreon.com slash beyond the DJ Booth Podcast.

SPEAKER_10:

Yeah. And I I mean, I do this a lot, so I tend to Bro, I do it a lot as well. You want me to add some of mine? Yeah, let's do it. Let's do it to combine it.

SPEAKER_08:

I'll add some of my favorites as well. All right, Boothheads, we made a move, and it's a bold one. We officially launched a Patreon.

SPEAKER_10:

We've got two tiers: one for$5.99 and one for$19.99. Basically, the cost of a coffee or a cocktail, depending upon how you roll.

SPEAKER_08:

Listen, this isn't some support us or we disappear kind of thing. You actually get some things that are useful that we think that you're gonna need to run your DJ business.

SPEAKER_10:

Like early access to batched episodes, bonus episode that we couldn't post publicly, maybe, and our weekly top 10 banger lists, songs that absolutely crushed at our events this week. You know, the stuff that you really want to steal from us anyway. But if you want to go deeper, jump into the booth backroom at$19.99 a month.

SPEAKER_08:

That's where the extra love lives. Monthly prize drawings like headphones, merch, coaching calls. We've got Serato exports of our history, discounts on exclusive merch, and record pool hookups.

SPEAKER_10:

Backroom members aren't just listening, they're actually shaping what this podcast is going to become and probably making your DJ sets better in the process.

SPEAKER_08:

So stop texting us asking what remix was that and get in the booth for real.

SPEAKER_10:

Patreon.com forward slash beyond the DJ Booth podcast. Choose a tier, grab your spot, and let's keep building. Booth heads, you know where to go.

SPEAKER_08:

Suck Grammys. Grammys. Okay. I'm now I'm like trying to like every so much so much has happened. That so much has happened. Right? You've been around the world and back, but we'll talk about the the gears, though. I mean the gig stuff later.

SPEAKER_10:

I want to see though with performances that you saw that were knocked your socks off, things you hated.

SPEAKER_08:

Going back and listening. Anything that was I thought the Grammys was really good this year. I thought the same thing. I thought the Ashley was sitting there watching it with me, and she goes, Is this surprisingly good this year? And I go, Yeah, it actually is really good. They did a lot more performances, I felt like a lot more performances, less talking, less bullshit. Um, I mean, you know Bruno. I mean, Bruno up there in the freaking Valentine's 70s suits, crushed. He opened as well with with Rose. Yes. Speaking of that, um I mean, remind me of a million things have happened since then.

SPEAKER_10:

Well, what I did love was that they did, I think it was just for one of the categories, maybe best new artist. That was insane. Where they did everybody ten different people. Yeah. The guy I felt terrible for. Yeah, that was bad. Alex Warren. Yeah. Are you gonna show the clip? So you want to hit it? This was sad.

SPEAKER_08:

Oh man, I feel so bad for this kid. Yeah. This is what he's hearing in his ears. I knew it had to be something like this. I saw him kept taking him out and putting them in. I felt sorry. And he's like so pissed. But he held it together like a pro. He did, but man, it it that ain't good.

SPEAKER_04:

There's two parts about this. Yeah, explain.

SPEAKER_08:

Uh his in-ears were playing it double. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Echo, echo, echo. So you see him, and he walks in from the top of the stadium. So there's two problems. One, he wanted to do something cool and walk in from the top of the stadium to the stage. Yeah. Two, Tech should be able to handle that. I mean, I've seen Ja Rule out on the fucking lawn 200 miles from the stage at Walnut Creek, and and he can hear and sing perfectly. Right. Or I'm just making a I think it was Ja Rule. But my my point is I I kind of I wanted to blame, I want to blame the sound guy first and foremost, but then I also have him like, dude, if you had just been on stage, I bet you wouldn't have had that problem. Because there probably is wedges up there, you could have just ripped them out. Like, but if you're gonna walk, I mean, again, from the top of Sofa, uh not SoFi, wherever this was, right? The forum or whatever, yeah, you know, 30,000 stables, 30, 40,000 people from the top all the way down. Like, there's a good chance you're gonna have some drops or a problem. Right. And so I it I just feel bad for him because he's he's new, he's green, he wanted it to be great, and it was far from it. And that song is it's an electric. Yeah, it's powerful, right? Yeah, choir.

SPEAKER_04:

Maybe I'm just seeing just from the clip, but it still sounds good.

SPEAKER_08:

It it's uh it's off. Like I like even me and Axe were like, oh no, oh no. Like he at some point. He was behind. Oh, he's behind the second, yeah, yeah, yeah. Just like I was on the Harry Styles thing a minute ago.

SPEAKER_10:

Yeah, it's like it anyway. Well, I threw up a couple of categories of awards, yeah, and I thought we could just talk through any of these that kind of shook you, surprised you. I mean, album of the year was Bad Bunny, record of the year, Luther. Any I I don't put the rest of the um the contestants, but you saw what happened when the record of the year got announced?

SPEAKER_08:

No, I didn't know Chair goes, opens the envelope and goes Luther Vandross. Oh, I heard about that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And like I was like, what now? To be fair, to be fair, what is she like 80? She's 80 years old. I looked it up. She's 79 or 80. So to be fair, I'll give her that. Yeah, she looks 55. Yeah. Two, Luther is from her era, like he's passed now. Like, did he pass? He's dead. Yeah, he's been dead. He been dead. It's even worse to read out a dead man thing. He did. Oh. Um, listen, man. I mean, Bad Bunny's on top of the world. Kendrick's not, I mean, Kendrick's Kendrick. Yeah. I didn't see anything wrong with these. Go to the next slide.

SPEAKER_10:

I don't shout out the dogs barking next door. We're gonna keep going. What's the next slide? I got a couple categories. Song of the year. I was shocked at this.

SPEAKER_08:

I mean, I mean the other contenders. Uh the song is boring to me. I mean, did you ever play it? No, absolutely not.

SPEAKER_10:

That's where I'm trying to come. Now, I did look it up, and that Song of the Year is more about songwriting. Correct.

SPEAKER_08:

That's right.

SPEAKER_10:

And melody and all of that stuff. But I'm like, this didn't even make a dent.

SPEAKER_08:

No, this was like very birds of a feather, maybe, yeah.

SPEAKER_10:

Yeah. Nah. I was shocked. Like, so my question to you was on this specifically. How are they even? I mean, are you listening to that many albums going that deep in every record that comes out to be able to figure this out? Like, how are they getting these?

SPEAKER_08:

No, the the artist has to submit first. Got it. So now the pool is smaller.

SPEAKER_10:

Okay, so they're the ones that make the first initial play. That's right.

SPEAKER_08:

That's right.

SPEAKER_10:

And they may not even get picked up at all, as an artist who would be even considered. That's correct.

SPEAKER_08:

Got it. Okay. Um, so I'm assuming that. That's one way to narrow it down. And then it goes low, you know. But there's like 10,000 people I think could vote on this.

SPEAKER_04:

Yeah, they have like a voting committee.

SPEAKER_08:

Okay.

unknown:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_10:

Best new artist. I mean, Olivia Dean, I called this one early before she was even. I was like, this girl is gonna be huge. That whole category was impressive. Tough. Anyone could have won, and I would have been fine with any of those.

SPEAKER_08:

But she's been kind of a really good record. It is your it is this record. There are seven to ten songs you can play for dinner on it. Oh, yeah. It feels very Bossa Nova, uh loungy. Who's the girl who um but not Nora Jones-ish.

SPEAKER_07:

Yes, yes, yes.

SPEAKER_08:

Yes, she's got that kind of vibe. Nora Jones-ish.

SPEAKER_10:

But like a little bit more upbeat. Yes.

SPEAKER_08:

You know what I mean? Absolutely. Not so it's a little more Bossa Nova, loungy.

SPEAKER_10:

Yeah. She's awesome. Let's hit the next one. I think we went to the pop category, and I just oh no, no, this is a little bit more. Don't you? You know, I hate that song. And you know, K-pop, this is the only thing they really won. Yeah. They weren't even a new artist. Yeah, that doesn't category. I was kind of shocked about that. All right, now we can go to the next. We'll roll through these. Um, vocal album. I'm shocked on this. Yeah, I was too. Lady Gaga's latest album. I mean, she had one hit. What are they looking for on this? I don't know.

SPEAKER_08:

It's crazy. Lola. I was surprised on that one. I love the song. I do too, but I was surprised on this one as well. I remember being surprised.

SPEAKER_10:

Well, that have you there was a clip, and I thought I would get your take on this hot take on Messy Lola. So hit this next one.

SPEAKER_01:

Messi is this generation's Fleetwood Max dreams.

SPEAKER_06:

Because I'm too messy, and then I'm too fucking crazy.

SPEAKER_01:

I actually think it was probably the reference track because it oscillates back and forth between two chords, and you can even hear the sort of ethereal guitar, like the slide thing that's kind of in the background. Right there. Same thing's happening in Messi. There it is. So I think that's the obvious reference.

SPEAKER_10:

Wow. Kind of interesting. That is interesting. I mean, I don't think that's pretty tough to call her. If she's a new artist and you're literally saying that she's the Fleetwood Mac, I think it's a little a little stretched.

SPEAKER_08:

Well, I think it's, yeah. I mean, I think that I think that whoever worked with her on this record, which obviously was a really good producer, was probably influenced by Fleetwood Mac. And I think any female singer would call Stevie Nicks like a god. Yeah. So it's not a reach, I don't think. Okay. All right. I mean, if listen, if I'm trying to make a pop record, I'm trying to make it as close.

SPEAKER_04:

I'm go to the goats. Yeah, I'm gonna go to the goats. Yeah.

SPEAKER_08:

I'm gonna try and make it as close to something else that was transcending, you know, the last 40 years. I mean, that song's 40 years old now. Sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04:

Not call pop for nothing.

SPEAKER_08:

Exactly.

SPEAKER_10:

Or popular. There's a couple other uh categories here. So uh I mean, any I don't really listen to country, but these were some of the ones. Jelly Rolls, uh beautiful, beautifully broken one country album. I mean, he's kind of on top of the world a little bit. Yeah, he is country singer. Tylly I didn't wouldn't classify him as country, really. I was kind of shocked. It's almost like any Demon.

SPEAKER_08:

It's almost like Americana, bluegrass. Do you know that song? Yeah, that new record is garbage. And I like that guy a lot. I hate that album.

SPEAKER_10:

Bite and list. That's from that, I'm assuming.

SPEAKER_08:

Yeah, I hate it.

SPEAKER_10:

And this Chris Stapleton song, I bad as I used to be. I don't know that one either. No. Are you either? I love Stapleton, yeah. I don't know that song. And I think I had one more category, possibly. Oh no, two more. Uh Best Rap album. Yeah. Not shocking. Okay. Uh Best Rap Performance. I mean, you kind of called Clips Out. Still not shocking. Was that from that album that Clips put out?

SPEAKER_08:

Yeah. Okay.

SPEAKER_10:

And then Best Rap Song Top. I thought that was super old.

SPEAKER_04:

Like, I'm surprised they the GNX album, though, is like it was it just hit the line right before cutoff or something like that. A lot of people were mad at like the hip-hop community. It was like, yo, y'all gonna keep giving him grace. Right. Yeah.

SPEAKER_08:

It carried a long time. And then what? Did you see old boy the lefty gum play up? Though he's gotten sober. Oh, really? He had a tuxedo on. He spoke completely like normally. That's good. Did not make a fool out of himself or anything like that. I'd love to see that. Yeah, that guy's a mess. Yeah. All right. One last one, I think. Oh no, two more. Crazy spooky sky.

SPEAKER_07:

Dude, I love that song. I love that song. Who Dutton?

SPEAKER_10:

But I'm like, I feel like it just came on the scene. Why does all of a sudden this one just sidebar? Did you know that was that kid actor from one of those?

SPEAKER_08:

What's that show?

SPEAKER_04:

ICarly. Did you know that?

SPEAKER_08:

I don't know. It's not our generation.

SPEAKER_04:

I know him.

SPEAKER_08:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04:

He's been around for a while. You knew it was that guy? I didn't know he was like still in it. And then it started coming out again. I was like, Is that a new kid from iCarly? Wait a minute.

SPEAKER_10:

Is that that kid from iCarly?

SPEAKER_04:

Yeah, it's crazy.

SPEAKER_10:

Have you heard any more on this album?

SPEAKER_08:

Not really, no.

SPEAKER_04:

It's a good album. Is it a good album? It's a really like he can, he's good.

SPEAKER_08:

Like, I mean, like what I like.

SPEAKER_04:

You know I love Leon Ridges. Do you is it with it? It's around, it's like kind of like really smooth RB. Almost not a grown and sexy, but like, you know, he's a young guy, so I know he's young, yeah.

SPEAKER_10:

Super old school, but it's I need to give this a run then. It's nice. And then I was shocked, not shocked, to see this best RB performance folded by Kalani. That we remember when we went through all those TikTok tracks, and this was constantly coming up, even on the top 200. It was. So it's kind of uh, I mean, I still don't really play it in my face. Me neither.

SPEAKER_04:

It's not really uh it's uh a dance record. It's not really a dance record, right?

SPEAKER_10:

Yeah, it's a breakup record, so it's not really like something you would play it out of out of the. All right, let's hit the next one here. I think this is the last one. Nope, two more. I just uh rock. I mean, I don't really play much rock. I love rock, but I don't know. Do you know any of those bands? I don't know Turnstyle. You know Nine's Nails. Oh, yes, I don't know Turnstyle.

SPEAKER_08:

Young boy, I love that kid. I love it now. Musically, not good. But dude, I will say it right here. He is the only young, living, cool rock star that there is in on the planet right now. He's got the he's got the leather pants, the long hair, he's got the eyeliner, never has a shirt on, totally ripped, have the tattoos, music's no good. That's the problem. Turnstyle. He could be the now, no, Youngblood. I don't know about turnstyle.

SPEAKER_04:

I'm saying turnstile is what you need to listen to.

SPEAKER_10:

Really? Yeah. Okay. Shout out to Turnstyle. I feel like this is the one genre that has been sucking for a long time. Like they need to come back. Like, I feel like it's like it's been since the 90s. It I mean, literally has been since then.

SPEAKER_04:

You'll get that feel with the turnstile album. It's more it's more like it's rock. Like it's but it's not like super heavy. Okay. They have melodic. They they started off as a hardcore band. Okay. So their earlier stuff is really heavy. Okay, I don't want that. And then this new stuff that they've been putting out is kind of more commercial. Okay. I think you would really like it. I'm from Maryland, so I gotta you gotta shout him out.

SPEAKER_10:

Okay, shout out to hit the next one. So I thought we'd end with dance stuff just because and I'm not familiar with this. I mean, I knew who FKA FKA Twist is.

SPEAKER_08:

I think a lot of people in the dance community were upset about that.

SPEAKER_10:

Well, I don't know that album.

SPEAKER_08:

Me neither.

SPEAKER_10:

And then again, pop recording. I thought Abracadabra played it.

SPEAKER_08:

They are on her balls. I I barely played it. I barely played that record, dude. Yeah. Crazy. And then the the remix of it is the best remix. Did you see that dude? Yeah, like weird, like weird heads.

SPEAKER_10:

I I am not even familiar with that remix, sir.

SPEAKER_04:

He's like a Dave Punk type of.

SPEAKER_10:

Yeah, like a little head over his head. Like a little helmet head. Yeah. You didn't see that? No, I didn't. It was weird. Anyway. Well, you want to talk about the uh Super Bowl? Move on? Let's talk about it. Oh, did you wait? Don't play that one yet. Go back. Yeah, we'll just leave it there for right now. So let's just talk about uh the performance. Obviously. We're not gonna talk about the game.

SPEAKER_08:

Yeah, the game sucked. It was shitty, I thought. Yeah.

SPEAKER_10:

But you know, everyone made a big deal about the the bad bunny performance. What was your take on it compared to other shows that you've seen?

SPEAKER_08:

I I I I mean, I was talking to Saquon when he got here today. I loved it. I thought I'm I'm gonna go stuff and I don't I don't listen to Bad Bunny. I've told y'all before, I don't really get requests for Bad Bunny. I actually loved it. And the more clips I see now, four days after the Super Bowl, and how proud people were, like they would just take the phone and set it beside the TV and like look at my mom's reaction to getting shouted out by Bad Bunny or Nicaragua, Ecuadorians, uh Dominicans. Like, dude, that there people are crying and stuff. Like the more I've clips I see, I'm like, damn, this dude really like. He spoke to uh uh underrepresented, did um underrepresented entire demographic on this show. And just the the references to and I've never been to Puerto Rico, I've been to Dominican Republic, I've been to Mexico, I've been to Haiti, I've been to uh uh Virgin Islands, like I've been to a lot of these places, I've never been to Puerto Rico, but I felt like he took every little thing that that he remembers and knows and loves about Puerto Rico and put them on that field. And I think if you were there, it from what I saw, it looked so shitty because of those bushes and everything else. But if you watch it on TV, he he painted a perfect Puerto Rican picture. Yeah. I loved it, man. I I really and I don't, and I've now for four days I'm riding around listening to Bad Bunny, not knowing a damn thing what he's saying. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm just right, it dies uh and I'm just riding around listening for three days now, four days.

SPEAKER_07:

I thought it was good.

SPEAKER_10:

Uh I I wouldn't put it at the top of the ever of halftime shows. I wouldn't put it at the worst either.

SPEAKER_08:

I but I always I'm always gonna go back to the people that I love when I really remember, even even like a prince or that's where I kind of like U2 or a Coldplay or even Michael Jackson. I mean, uh you know, I remember so many other ones from the past 40 years of of you know memories, but I really, really liked him, man.

SPEAKER_10:

The one thing I I loved was the A, the uh visuals. Yes, I felt like if if you're watching on TV, yes, they kind of made that halftime show for that, which they should 100%. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_08:

It's not 135 million versus 70,000.

SPEAKER_10:

Right. Or whatever the visuals were incredible. The idea of bringing humans as plants out there, genius, yeah, you know, because they have to get those things off quick for like staging, basically. Yeah, they didn't ever move. Yeah, you know. Um, it was funny. I'll I'll post the picture because I just saw it today. I saw a bunch of people like that. I mean, did you see this guy? Jeff Scott Gold. Yeah, I'll put it on the on the screen when I'm gonna go. That's great. Um, but uh yeah, that part of it was great. I thought that whole thing. My my only thing was there was so much hate going into it from the last two. Yeah, him and Kendrick. People feeling like I was super niche or whatever, right? And I just was hoping that they would go over the top with their performance to like shut everybody up, and I didn't feel like they either of them really did that to the level of what and I don't know what Saquon and I were kind of talking about that.

SPEAKER_08:

I thought this was very positive. Oh, it was positive message. And I I was saying I felt like Kendrick was not negative, but it was serious, is what Saquon was. Tell me what you were saying earlier, Saquon. You you felt like Kendrick was he had to be serious.

SPEAKER_04:

Yeah, at the time, yeah, I felt like he had to be serious, and that's just his thing.

SPEAKER_10:

Well, and he had the whole beef with Drake going on at the time.

SPEAKER_04:

You know, that he was coming off coming off of that, and the country is just you know, same thing with Bad Bunny, you know, he's doing this for the people, you know. Both had the same message, just different execution. Okay. That's what he was saying. And I kind of agree. It's always been about America. Yeah. Getting the people together, like we're all American, no matter where you come from. Right.

SPEAKER_08:

You know, yeah, the football at the end, yeah, together we're America, the signs in the stadium. You know, the only thing more powerful than hate is love. Like, I felt like he he he did a good job.

SPEAKER_10:

The two weird parts to it was I didn't understand the Lady Gaga coming in. I don't know why she picked the Bruno song.

SPEAKER_08:

I think we I think we know why that was. Maybe I don't know. It was a little white interjection. Oh, is that what I think? People were saying that what he was saying, that's people were saying what he was believing that for one. So this would do that. This is what's going on. I don't think he had a choice. Think about it. Everybody always has somebody interjected into their shit.

SPEAKER_04:

People are saying that it was on purpose. He was what he was saying in Spanish. I don't speak Spanish, but whatever he was saying in Spanish before that was was like, bring out this, something, something. And it was like a like thing I'm. Why that song? I don't know why. Late the side. I don't know. Yeah, I don't know why.

SPEAKER_10:

Sauce version. I don't understand why that really symbolism there.

SPEAKER_08:

I didn't, I didn't need her in it.

SPEAKER_10:

I was hoping because they started going to some of the older like Puerto Rican people, like Daddy Yankee. And I was like, I was hoping he'd bring out like those kind of artists that like or even somebody more iconic than that, or like old school. Yeah, like and I was like, bummer. I was kind of pretty great then. And at first I was like, why is he seems random? I didn't realize he was Puerto Rican. Yeah. So that was kind of makes sense to me. Dude, Ricky Martin is probably 60. That dude looks incredible. Yeah, totally. Yeah. So anything else then about the Super Bowl, not necessarily performance, anything, commercials. I mean, that was kind of lame as well.

SPEAKER_08:

The Benson Boone and Ben Stiller thing was the only thing that truly made me chuckle.

SPEAKER_10:

I thought the one that was hilarious to me was the um the Bitcoin by Coinbase. It was basically like uh just something that you were like you were glued to see what it was. Yeah, it was just words, yes, yeah. And you're like, what is this? And then at the end it said Coinbase or whatever. That was the only thing that was kind of in there. I was more glued into like the things that you didn't see at the Super Bowl. Uh the first one was like the pre-party. Did you see the DJ? What happened to him? No. Uh roll this clip. Oh no. Speakers just went out here.

SPEAKER_03:

Speakers keep going out. I feel really bad, but this is really bad. Look at that dude.

SPEAKER_10:

So Shaq's up there, not I'd guess not knowing, because he seems like he's still like jamming to it. Oh no, no, it's T Pain. Oh, C Pain. It's Shaq's party, right?

SPEAKER_08:

But T Pain was DJing. Yes, all that. And he must have in ear to speak. The speakers are fully out.

SPEAKER_07:

Nobody telling you?

SPEAKER_10:

Like, how does nobody tell him? How do you not know that? Right. And how does that even happen at a show like this? Like, Shaq's got the money to put it together. Absolutely. That's a major freaking look how many people are there. I know. And then the other one that I loved was uh shown on TV, but this was hilarious. The streaker they cut away from it. Did you see that receiver? Great advertising on his back, by the way. Yeah, what is it for?

SPEAKER_08:

It's like some trading platform. Who knows? But he's just taking off.

SPEAKER_07:

Have you seen his thing? He had on the meta glasses. Have you seen his video? Oh no. The streakers got the video of him, like he it shows him standing at the wall. He starts hitting record.

SPEAKER_08:

He one guy jumps and gets tackled. So it was a diversion. Yeah. Then he jumps and he's, I mean, that dude is ripped too, by the way. And he's like, we gotta, you gotta. But like if you're gonna streak, you gotta, you gotta pull your dong out.

SPEAKER_07:

Like, I feel like you gotta go negative.

SPEAKER_04:

Well, I mean, you can't do that because there's kids in this, so then you ain't trying to get a decent exposure charge.

SPEAKER_07:

How about draws though? Like, he's got on track pants.

SPEAKER_04:

I feel like they can reach and probably. Well, and you gotta have cleats dick out. No, I'm just saying, like, they can reach and be like, oh, you trying to be nude? Like, it's kids around. You can't, you know what I mean? Like a shirt office, okay.

SPEAKER_10:

You gotta have like you gotta have cleats because you can't do this in tennis. I don't cleats. No, you need to. Oh, okay. Because that's why he slipped. Yeah, right. You know? But do you think that the company, this was a question I have. Do you think the quet the company would have paid his ticket to get there and his fine or whatever he had to pay because of the average? Yeah. I mean, you're spending 20 grand to go be a streaker for what? Well, I'm just hearing different stories. It's also a bet.

SPEAKER_04:

Like they're using that call call sheet, kalashi.

SPEAKER_08:

I think you I th I heard it was a bet.

SPEAKER_04:

And it was a bet going.

SPEAKER_08:

But he bet everything he had that there would be a streaker at the Super Bowl.

SPEAKER_04:

No, he couldn't bet. He somebody else bet for because you can't, that's illegal. The first time, after he did it the first time, because he's the same guy.

SPEAKER_08:

Yeah, this happened at a different Super Bowl. Same, dude.

SPEAKER_04:

Same guy. Wow. He they bet and then he won all that money and bailed himself out. Then the second time they did the bet, he couldn't be the one streaking. So he well, he couldn't be the one to, you know what I mean? Yeah, he placed the bet on himself. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_10:

That's crazy. Anything else you want to add about this?

SPEAKER_08:

Nah, man. I feel bad for Drake May. I love he's a Tar Heel man, and he just he didn't play well. No, well, allegedly was injured. Who knows? Yeah. Well, let's hit the gear corner. Shout out Sam Darnold. Shout out uh the Vikings for being dumb enough to let Sam Darnold go. Shout out the Panthers for letting him go. Shout out USC.

SPEAKER_10:

Shout out the Jets for shitting on him. Love my Trojans. Yeah. Is that where you play? Yeah, USC.

SPEAKER_08:

Shout out Sam Darnold.

SPEAKER_10:

There you go. All right. Let's hit the gear corner. Okay.

SPEAKER_08:

The gear's here. The gear.

SPEAKER_11:

The gear is here. He is here. He is here. He is here. He is here. He is here.

unknown:

He is here.

SPEAKER_10:

So this is a future gear corner update that you might be not aware of. This just literally came out last night. Okay. Hit this slide. Dude, Southwest is bringing free Starlink. Which, if you've never done it, it's crazy fast. Like Google fast? Like Google fast? Yes. On a plane. On a plane. Uploading files. So this is going to be happening end of 2026. And I think all of the other airlines are going to have to follow suitcase. Absolutely. There's no way. A being free. And B being that fast. Damn. That's Elon Musk's product. So if you are a Southwest Airlines flyer, just know you're getting.

SPEAKER_08:

You saw they ripped all the podiums down, right?

SPEAKER_10:

They don't do the the Oh, yeah, they don't do that anymore. I've got a flight coming up on them soon.

SPEAKER_08:

So I saw some some lady was at the airport the other day filming them taking those little podium things up where you used to stand. Yeah. They don't have those anymore. No more groups. You know, Southwest was you boarded by group. You didn't have a seat number.

SPEAKER_11:

Oh.

SPEAKER_08:

So you would check in, and you know, wherever you checked in was kind of where your group was. So they go group five and then, you know, blah, blah, blah. And now they have seat numbers just like a regular air aircraft. But normally when you would just check in, you would get in a group. You sit anywhere you want to sit anywhere you want.

SPEAKER_04:

Oh, wow.

SPEAKER_10:

The last thing about the gear, um, I wanted to share actually a thing here. These are not, these are clean. By the way, I thought they were underwear. I'm like, no. These are, and I don't know if you're familiar with them. Oh, pressure sucks. Yeah, you do wear these on the long flights. Long you haul. You know I'm going to Australia this year. So these things are super long. My wife just got back from going to Argentina. Tolerance. I know. She did not take the ones that I told her to get. She went online. And the reason why I'm bringing it up is that she bought some imposters. And apparently, what happens, what they're supposed to do is keep your legs from swelling up on long flights because the air compression and all that kind of stuff can jack. I mean, all your joints, your rings, anything on you is going to stay uh tight because it's everything's puffed. I've never noticed this. I mean, technically, I don't go on many long flights, but right. So this contracts it all, but because of I guess the microfibers, like you're not even supposed to wash these. Like there's a special process for cleaning them so that they don't lose that connectivity or whatever to your body. Well, she bought another one and on the whole plane, she was totally fine. But then when she got off, she ballooned up. No. Yeah. So you have to watch out for which ones to get. So on the gear uh thing, I will put the link for the right one to get. Okay. Any idea on what these cost? Oh, they're probably expensive. Are they$39?$24.99. Okay. So not terrible. Yeah. But if you're going abroad or you're going anywhere from like East Coast to West Coast, you just literally crank those things up to your damn knee. Yeah. Totally. Wow, it's a good idea. And you need to go that. Yeah. You're not wanting any fashion shows with that. Rock some shorts with those. Yeah. Been a while. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Some shorts.

SPEAKER_07:

Put on bearing Georgia. Oh shit, boy. You can't tell me no. You better stop fucking with him. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_10:

Styling. Let's hit the question.

SPEAKER_07:

Question of the day.

SPEAKER_08:

Oh. Okay. Our boy, Lauren Miller. Hey, shout out Lauren Miller. Um, first time speaking at the Pittsburgh DJ Summit. Did an outstanding job. Really? Yeah. Outstanding job. He has a great voice. Very soothing. Go ahead and read it. With Bad Bunny headlining the Super Bowl halftime show. I'm expecting a rise in Bad Bunny requests. However, I'm really gun shy. Not only does Bad Bunny now come with political overtones, but Bad Bunny always falls flat here in Ohio, except one time when half the guests were from Miami. Would love some guidance here.

SPEAKER_10:

Um yeah, that's a great question. Um I mean, I'm more on the lean on the side of arts art, and I don't really get into the political side of things for unless the client brings it up to me. Same.

SPEAKER_08:

Same. And I'm gonna err on the side of most people don't speak Spanish. Right. And at the end of the day, it's just it's still good booty shaking music. Now, I'm also going to err on the side of whatever the most popular ones are. Oh, of course. I'm not pulling out random B sides songs. T T me pregunto. Um uh the new.

SPEAKER_10:

And I I guess to kind of put a bow on the whole episode a little bit, like from the Grammys to this, I don't think this moves the needle much. Like their performances, those, especially those awards. Like, are you gonna see an increase in and song selection from the Grammys? Those songs are like a year and a half plus old.

SPEAKER_08:

I I'll be honest with you, also, man. I believe genuinely that the MPV awards, Grammys, stuff like that do not have many years left. I agree. As a television entity, unless they put more performances. I went, let's just say I went to six places the day after the Grammys. I started at the coffee shop. I went to a workout. I I don't most of the time I'm here by myself, so I don't talk to many people, but when I go out to look Lunch or whatever. Oh hey, didn't you watch the Grammys last night? I did not speak to one person, not one. Yeah. And even then yesterday I was in the Uber. I said, What'd you think about the game? The guy, probably 30-year-old black guy, he was like, I didn't watch it. The Super Bowl. Right. I was like, Did you watch halftime? Nah. Yeah. I just think that some things that we used to be like synonymous with with the whole world is watching, I think uh no longer happening. Did you watch the Grammys? No.

SPEAKER_04:

I think uh I think what was going on in the world.

SPEAKER_10:

Hold on one second.

SPEAKER_07:

Did you watch the Grammys?

SPEAKER_04:

Like actually watching. I did.

SPEAKER_10:

I just no no no. I like I was. I thought you were playing or something. No, I was I was putting my kid down and then I went back to the bedroom and we're watching TV and I just happened to see it was on. And then I started watching it. Like I didn't get promoted. Sorry to interrupt.

SPEAKER_04:

No, you could. It's just so many things going on in the world. Right. And people are just kind of seeing things for how they are. And how could we like uh I enjoy this celebration of these celebrities and then not really speaking on what's going on in the world, it's like a false like reality almost.

SPEAKER_05:

Okay.

SPEAKER_04:

So I think a lot of people feel that way. Right. Uh they may not be saying that. Right. But just I mean, here's my take. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_10:

Yeah. I feel like with the ease of getting music these days, or the clips after. Yeah. But just like I'm talking about getting these songs requested as a DJ or seeing them pop off. Bad of the question.

SPEAKER_08:

We jumped off the question, right?

SPEAKER_10:

Like, I don't think back in the day when you had to buy the album, you only heard it on the radio. You couldn't just listen and test out music on Spotify. Right. You would see those pops. But now I can listen to, I can go into those albums and go check real quick to see if it's worth it. And if it's good, I'll check it out. If I don't like it, I'll move on. I don't think they have as much power as they used to have in turning people on to new artists or whatever like they used to. You're right. But back to his question, I think you just roll with it.

SPEAKER_08:

Yeah. And I and also going back to what Saquon was saying and what you were saying, I also think in the world of everything is clipped up by midnight that night, I was already seeing clips from the grand. So do I want to spend four hours? It was a four-hour show. Maybe four and a half of my life watching this show, or do I just want to open the Instagram and go, shitty, shitty, shitty. Oh, that looks cool. Yeah. Like it's already clipped up by midnight.

SPEAKER_10:

So I know we're going long, but I have to say, what about Justin, the Beebs? That was bold, dude.

SPEAKER_08:

I loved it. Uh again. Yeah. I mean, you're gonna walk out there in your drawers and socks and have one guitar and a loot pedal and close your eyes the whole time. But dude, he sold it. I mean, I I thought it I loved it, man. Was there any symbolism there? I'm trying to figure out like why did he do that? I I just I think it was just like, I'm gonna do whatever the fuck I want, man. And the the the industry's been so shitty to me, and I've been abused.

SPEAKER_04:

I think that's what it is. He's just being metaphorically naked.

SPEAKER_08:

Yeah, or maybe I even fuck this is how I wrote the song. I was sitting in my house chilling with my wife, and I was just sitting on the couch. She made my drones. Good. I don't know, dude. I was kind of mesmerized by it, and I thought he kind of crushed it. Oh, he did crush it for sure. I don't know, man. Shout out Bieber. Shout out Bieber. Well, let's thank our sponsor. Yeah, shout out DJ Event Planner. Uh, this is the CRM, Brian and I, and many DJs around the world use to take control of their business and to keep track of their leads and to follow up and to even do some planning. So, shout out to DJ Event Planner for sponsoring the podcast for another year, I guess. Yep. Thank you guys for watching as well. New videos, new podcasts every single Wednesday. Let's go. See you next week.
