The Let Them Theory: Two Words That Change Everything

We’re starting a new book, and possibly a new way of thinking about other people.

In this episode, we dive into the introduction of The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins and the idea that started it all: The 5 Second Rule.

We talk about:

• why we often get stuck in thinking instead of acting
• how five seconds can be the difference between doing it – or not
• what’s actually holding us back (hint: it’s not always what you think)
• and how other people’s opinions quietly shape more of our lives than we realize

We also share how we’ve been using the 5-second rule in real life – from getting out of bed to finally doing the things we keep postponing.

This episode sets the foundation for what’s coming next:
👉 letting go of what you can’t control
👉 and focusing your energy where it actually matters

Next up: what “let them” really means.

SPEAKER_03

She's saying that the two words let them has changed so many lives for people.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And how can two words change people's lives? And how the hell can she write a whole book about two words?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. That is the question that begs an answer.

SPEAKER_02

Open a page, unlock your mind. Grow a little brighter, one book at a time. Stories that change you wisdom and sticks. Welcome to Book Bright, your personal growth fix.

SPEAKER_01

Welcome to Book Bright, the podcast that goes old school on personal development. We don't just read books, we live them. One chapter at a time. We're Sophia and Marielle. Two suites, imperfect English included, balancing kids, dogs, and business life while diving into international best sellers. And here's the thing: the book on your nightstand won't change your life until you do something with it. That's why we're here. To unpack, apply, and sometimes stumble our way through the ideas together. On the road to making it applicable, this is personal development. Lived out loud.

SPEAKER_02

Open a page, unlock your mind. Grow a little brighter, one book at a time. Stories that change you.

SPEAKER_01

Oh Smurf. Smurf. Oh, you sound like my kids. Yeah. How are you? It's Friday. It's Friday. I'm fine. Um, and we're starting a new book, and I sort of need that new beginnings, right? Yes.

SPEAKER_03

I love it.

SPEAKER_01

I'm looking forward to it. Yeah. We're all about like new ideas and innovation and stuff like that. So new beginnings, that's right up our alley. We're not that much of a like a people that sort of want to just um take care of those new beginnings. So uh and yeah, never mind. I'm already talking about something else.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I'm kind of proud of us um because that we that we actually finish every book that we are reading because we can start it, but now we are finishing it. Yeah. Every book, Sophia?

SPEAKER_01

That's yeah, that's that's a huge win for us, actually. Because I mean, that is the the whole point of this podcast from the beginning, getting that accountability partner, not only because we have said that, I mean, not only to deep dive into something, but actually follow through. Yes. It's so easy to start reading a book or just being inspired that someone else has read a book and you're like, Oh, I want to read that book as well. And then you start, and then life happens, or something just you're like, no, now I'm not reading anymore.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, it's so it's so easy to go on that road, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So that was like a huge bookbrite win for us. Yes, yes, a big one, big logs, oh or can I just share?

SPEAKER_03

Because this is the moment where you who are listening right now, Sophie and I are always before we hit the wreck button, we always like boost ourselves with amazing that we are amazing, you know. Yeah, just to get in the vibe, and this is a moment where we are saying amazing, amazing, amazing.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you, Joseph McClendon III, for giving us that expression.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, we love it, we love it, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But I that actually that come that came really spontaneous. Um, the win for us to actually finish our books, um, and that that came spontaneous as a share, but we had actually talked about us starting to have like wanting to share more of our wins uh in these different episodes. Yep. Yeah, and we were supposed to start today, and just before we hit the rec button, we were like, What are our wins? Uh, but then we shared uh a common one as well, just spontaneous that we hadn't talked about.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, you know, when our bride uh brains get together, we are just so brilliant and you know, amazing.

SPEAKER_01

We just the idea just pops up, and there we just lost like 50% of the listeners.

SPEAKER_03

Sorry, I'm so oh, they are so full of themselves, you know, but you know, I have I have a such a good day because my my period is over. So I'm I'm just like in the flow of the life and peaking, yeah. Oof, that's you're high on life. That's awesome. I know. So I have to just go with the flow and uh be right here and now with this feelings. That's awesome. Okay, so will you share the win?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I will share uh this week's win for me, and it has nothing to do with books. No, um, it has like I am a very uh I'm a person I like to have like a pre-understanding of things, or um, if I don't know anything about something, I want to I find that exciting and I want to sit down and learn about it. But one area that I do not like at all, it doesn't matter how much I learn about it, it's not interesting. I do not, I just don't like it. It's tech. And especially when it comes to like the car, things about the car, um, how that works, and if something fails and stuff like that. Uh, I'm not a big fan of that. I just want it to work, and I just want to get from A to B, right? Yeah, and then this week I was it's it's the middle of winter and it's freezing cold. It was like minus uh 13 degrees, and it's not that cold, but it was quite cold. And I was in the parking lot with my two kids, with two of my kids, the youngest ones, and we had just been uh shopping groceries, and I came out to the car, and I saw that one of my tires had a flat. I have two kids here, it's freezing cold. One of them doesn't even have his jacket on, you know. I'm like, and I don't like this. It puts me in a situation where I don't have control and I don't know how to change the tire, I don't know what to do with the flat tire or anything. But anyway, my win for this was that I I did this. I I got some sort of device from the back of my trunk that enabled me to sort of pump the the wheel up for us to get home. And then the next day I took uh it took the car to the car service center, and I had this mantra. It takes about 15 minutes or 20 minutes uh to get there, and I had this mantra the whole time. I was like, let me just get there, let me just get there, let me just get there, and and it and this sounds so ridiculous and small. I mean, I've done so many responsible and huge projects and stuff like that, but this for me is a huge win because this is so way out of my comfort zone. Taking that short to the car service center, getting it fixed, being like being sort of helpless when it comes to I don't understand this fucking car. And I can't solve it by myself. Um, so I was like, you know, when I came home and I told my husband, like, you know, I fixed the car. Uh and I was telling my kids and I was like high fiving, and you know, I was celebrating huge.

SPEAKER_03

That's good. That's good.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it was it was a huge one win for me. It sounds ridiculous, but it was a huge win for me because I powered through a really uncomfortable emotion that is connected to this, right? So that is the win, not the actual just going to the car service center. That's not the win itself, but you know, being in that emotion of being totally uncomfortable and still doing it.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, it's a it's a huge win, it's a good win. And I'm proud of you, Sophia. Good job.

SPEAKER_01

Well, thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. And now when I'm saying, like, okay, can you please share your win? You're probably going to say something profoundly deep and spiritual, and my car service uncomfortable situation will sound like okay, let's just edit this.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, I know, I don't know about that, but okay, what is your win? All right, so my win is um, you know, I'm reading these courses. Uh like is it is it high school or college? College, like college courses um online. We can do that in Sweden. Um read courses to ah yeah, you know. I I I didn't finish college when I went on college, so I have to um do the courses again so I can have grades and yeah, you know, but that's not the point. I'm I'm reading this, uh yeah. And um this one course I have been really delayed with it. Um really, really late. You are supposed to read a course in like five weeks, but when I ordered the book for the course, uh the book went delayed, so I've got it like a week ago, and this week is the last week to finish the course. So I did the whole course in one week. Oh, yes, and you know, uh my my win isn't that I did it in one week, that's not the win. The win is that uh just like you, I'm I'm not freaking out, I'm not I'm not stressed out to do the course in weeks. I have been, you know, so calm inside and so systematic, like just one day at a time, one task at a time, just sit here and study. And and in this, I have been sitting so many hours per day to finish the course, and I have felt so good inside, so good. It has been so fun to read this course, and that's a huge win for me to have like to feel the feelings of it's fun and to not stress about it, and and I'm not stressed out, even though I have this huge list of other things I need to do. So I my win is also that I have really been okay, Marielle. You need to pre prioritize prioritize okay. I'm I was not good to say that word, prioritize what you do. And it's okay if you not do the other stuff, yeah. Just leave it behind. It's okay. Just accept the thing that you that you are so late with this course, and you just need to to do the work. Yeah, that's the only thing, and that's my win. My old my old me, my me for like if years past, yeah, has been like I'm so stressed, and I I need to do this, and this has to be finished uh in about five days, and uh I don't know if I can manage it, and I really need to sit down and you know, yeah, like yeah, in effect, like going into a spin situation about all the emotions connected to that, yes, yeah, but I have been so calm, it's okay, I can do this because you know I have done it with another course, uh and I did that on a week, and I didn't stress out either. I'm just like I can do this, and you know what? If I can just connect like a I don't know, third win to this, why I can manage this and why I'm so calm inside, and why I can learn so fast because I'm a fast learner, that's thanks to Book Bright. Because we are studying every book so deeply, you know, and the chapter is so heavy and so many pages, and it's on English, and you need to understand it, and then we are going to talk about it, and you need to like find the oh, what's the real topics in every chapter? Yeah, and because of all the work we have done in every book and every chapter, it helped me a lot when it comes to learn like other stuff when I am studying. You know, these books, these courses I am reading, it's so easy if you compare it to the books we are reading.

SPEAKER_01

That's awesome. That's like programming your your mind, like it's getting a pattern on how to uh understand things and how to take in information.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. Awesome. And yes, that's so good. And and you know, the one who is listening and and and know my story about my um my younger me when I was in college, I didn't manage it because I have this programming in my mind that I'm worthless, and it no it doesn't matter how much I study, I'm going to fail every courses, and I did fail every courses. It was like this this fulfilling prophetia, you know? Yeah, and I have rewritten that story. Yeah, I have a new story in my mind now, and that's a huge win. I'm not worthless anymore.

SPEAKER_01

And there, ladies and gentlemen, she just made it spiritual, profound, deep. Thank you.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, here it comes. It goes like deeper and deeper and deeper in my mind when I am talking about it.

SPEAKER_01

Next week, next week, I'm putting more effort into presenting my win than I will to the whole chapter.

unknown

Yep.

SPEAKER_01

No, I'm just kidding. That is awesome, Marielle. And thank you. Um it's those kinds of wins that it's like when with the the gap in the gain, like looking at how far have you come, right?

SPEAKER_03

Yes, yeah, it's so important. It's so important, and it does so much with your confidence.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Because you could still be like, if you had been in the gap, you could still have been like, okay, I don't still have the the enough understanding of this, or you know, been frustrated, but you were in the game. Yes. Yeah. And if you hadn't, if you hadn't been listening to our um previous episode on the gap and the gain, please do that. Um, it's one episode where we talk about one book, The Gap in the Gain. It was like setting us up for success for 2026.

SPEAKER_03

Totally. And the gap, and when you are in when you know about the gap and the gain, and you are in the game, it's like life changing.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And I'm I'm not kidding, it's life-changing.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And that is why we wanted to start to share our wins in the beginning of each chapter, just again to hold ourselves accountable and actually be in the game, but also maybe as an inspiration to you who are listening, that implement that sort of structure of seeing what are your wins? How far have you come this week with yourself or with your relationships or your business or whatever it is? What is the the progress that you've made? Um, yeah. And as you can hear, it can be both really uh very not connected to anything within your business, uh, like my car shop service thing and being in the uncomfortable moment, and also be something that sort of when you look into it more deeply, like Marielle did, it could be something that at the surface is just something that happened this week. But then you go deeper and you see that, well, it's connected to a new habit I have, like her and book bright now. And then you look even deeper and you see, well, this is actually something that has broken my pattern from long, long time ago. So that is so I got sort of chills right now, just saying that. It's so good. Yeah. Oh, but you know what? Now we have been talking for ages.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, we need to go today. The new book we are uh talking about today. Yes, uh drum rolls.

SPEAKER_01

Which book is it, Sophia? The Latin Theory by Mel Robbins. Woo! Woohoo! Yes.

SPEAKER_03

Why did we choose this book? I don't know. Mel Robbins is she's huge and she's so good, and this book is really everyone's talk about it. So I really wanted to read a book, and I'm also so curious about okay, because she has she's saying that the two words let them has changed so many lives for people, yeah. And how can two words change people's life? And how the hell can she write a whole book about two words?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that is the question that begs an answer. Yes, absolutely.

SPEAKER_03

So that's that's one thing, but also, you know, we are doing this book bread thing, and we have our huge goal, and uh maybe people are like thinking, I don't know if they are, I don't care, but maybe thinking like, oh, who does who do they think they are? And that's where this book is coming in. Like, yeah, how can we set our mindset to to not uh to to to just don't care about other people, what other people think, yeah, yeah. So we can be more authentic and more us.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and it fits in the sort of series of having read 10x, which is about setting that huge goal, which is about leveling up, and then reading uh uh happy money, trying to get on terms with our money mindset, which we saw as an obstacle in the beginning, and then having sort of this book being a tool in everyday grind of moving forward. Yes, yeah, so that is the reasoning.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, good, yeah, and I think it's a really good book. The the introduction is good. Oh, good, then I don't know, but I think it is, yeah, but let's start with introduction then.

SPEAKER_01

And it's but wait, wait, maybe maybe we should just say that how we read this book because we read the books different each time. And this book has 20 chapters, something uh like that, and usually we sort of read each chapter and make one episode about that chapter. But this book actually has sort of sections which groups different chapters together under a common theme. So we chose that way of reading and talking about this book instead. Yep. Um So it will be about ten episodes or something like that. Yeah, exactly. And we will say in the beginning of each episode, we will say which chapters are we referring to in this theme of the book.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. Okay. Yes. And today it's only the introduction.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So I am starting with that. Hit it. Yes, are you ready? I am ready. The introduction to the book The Let Them Theory. The book starts by introducing who Mel Robin is, her story, how she ended up where she is today, and how the book The Let Them Theory came to life. And Mel Robins is one of the world's biggest speakers and profiles in personal development. She is incredibly successful, incredibly successful when it comes to her health, her career, and her finances. And she writes books and also hosts the Mel Robbins Show, a podcast that's consistently at the top of the charts. And you should really listening to her podcast. It's really good. But you know, her life hasn't always looked like this. At one point, she was at the rocket bottom with hold your hat right now with$800,000 in debt.

SPEAKER_01

That is huge.

SPEAKER_03

That is huge. And she was depressed, anxious, and felt completely miserable. It got so bad that she couldn't get out, she couldn't get out of bed. She couldn't open her mail, she couldn't eat, she basically couldn't live her life. She shares in the book that she knew logically in her head that she would feel better if she if she just made a little progress every day, like get out of bed, eating breakfast, or going for a walk, but she couldn't get her body to do it. She had no energy, no desire and no no and no motivation. But one day, when she was lying in her bed and unable to get up, she looked at the ceiling, the roof, and she said to herself, Okay, Mel, now we are going to count down from five. And then we just get up, okay? So she count down five, four, three, two, one, and then without thinking, she just stood up. And that moment changed her life. Because that's where the five second rule was born. She started using it in everything she did to get herself moving and take action. Like when she was getting out of bed, when she was opening the mail, going for that walk, for a walk, and slowly she started to feel better. So with everything she has to start in her daily life, she counted to five. The five-second rule helps you to take action before your brain has to has the time to overthink and doubt. It works because when you start counting down, you shift your focus away from your habitual autopilot and onto something else. And that gives your brain no time to start overanalyzing or talking you out of it. This is when Mel realized that taking action is the answer and the solution on the problem. And she would uh and she would share this little life hack with close only with close friends when they asked what she was doing to feel better because they saw in her life that okay Mel, you are you are I can see that you are feeling better and what are you doing? Um so she shared it, she shared the five-second rule, but otherwise she kept the five-second rule to herself because who was she to give advice to other people when she was the one who had once completely messed up her own life? She felt like she cannot get advice to other people because she's not that good enough to do that. She's not yeah. And then one day she got a call, and she got a call uh asking her to give a talk about advice when it comes to career changing changes. One of her friends had recommended her to an agent. She said and Mel Robins, an agent to have this speak, this talk on the stage to talk about career changes. And Mel Robin said yes, and ended up giving the most nervous, in her own words, worst talk of her life. At the end, she even forgot how she was to supposed to wrap it up. So instead of her planned ending on the talk when she stood there on the stage, blacking out in her head, she just shared the five-second rule because that was the first thing that pops up in her head, the five-second rule. And it didn't even had anything to do with the talk about changing careers. But she she just had to do something. And you know, that talk, she didn't even know what what talk she was doing, but that talk turned out to be a TEDx talk. And a TEDx talk it's kind of huge to do, and they are putting every talk on online so everyone can see it. And when they did that, it went viral, and suddenly everyone was talking about the five-second rule, and it started changing people's lives. That was the beginning of the career she has today. And the five-second rule helps you take action when you're scared, when you doubt yourself, or when you feel overwhelmed. It helps with the internal battle, the internal battle that you have of getting started doing things. But it doesn't help you deal with what's happening around you. And Mel started asking herself why she constantly had to push herself forward, why she was afraid of failing, because even though she was using this five second rule and and started everything she was starting, she she was always afraid of failing. And why she asked herself why she was hesitating, why she procrastinated, and the answer she came up to was this that it was about other people. It was about their opinions, their judgments, and what they should be thinking and saying about her. And here is, ladies and gentlemen, where this book the Leptan Theory comes in. Leptan is a proven method that teaches you how to protect your time, your energy and your focus so you can put it on what actually matters. If you read the book and apply what Mel teaches, your life will feel so much lighter and your relationships will improve dramatically. And I will end up right now by quoting her final words from the introduction. The final words in the end. The quote is This will be one of the most liberating and empowering empowering things you will ever experience. And it all begins with two simple words. Let them. And that's the introduction. Huge promise. I know, I know, I know. So I'm looking forward to that. But okay, the introduction part, it's more about the five-second rule, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And her journey into getting into that this book that we're reading.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, yes, and about the five-second rule. Have you used it? Have you heard about it before, Sophia?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, absolutely. I've heard it before. I heard it when she started to talk about it, and I sort of used it sometimes then, but then I was, but then I was reminded of it. It didn't catch on like with me in that sense, but now I read this chapter and I was reminded of it. And I actually have used it every day this week because I usually go up really early in the morning to get like an hour, an hour, hour and a half, maybe before the kids wake up to read or to take a walk or do something like that. But then maybe like a half a year ago, eight months ago, I hit pre-menopause. Yeah. I'm not there yet. I just say shut up. Okay. No, but you know, and when that happened, I don't know, my entire like energy got just sucked out. I could not, for the life of me, I could not get up in the morning. It did not work. And every ounce of energy that I had or willpower was like, no, it's not happening. And you know, when you get that sort of when you take a walk or you you do the things that that makes you feel good, it actually gives you sort of like a kick or something, it gives you energy. I didn't get that. Even if I did something, I didn't get that. And then I started treatment and stuff like that, but I and I feel better. Uh, but I still haven't managed to go up in the morning without being exhausted and sort of wanting just to snooze, hitting that snooze button until the five-second rule reminder of this week and reading this chapter. Uh, so I've implemented that. So every morning I've had I have my alarm, and when the alarm goes off, I'm like, okay, in five seconds, I'm going to get up, and then I count down down. I say five, four, three, two, one, and then I actually do get up.

SPEAKER_03

Wow, that's good.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So I have implemented it, I have heard it before, but this was the first time that it made a real difference because I have no other sort of natural things that kick in when I do stuff.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Good. That's really good. It's a huge win.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. Oh, that's good. So good advice for everyone who is listening and and to me.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I just stole her, like that is the original thing that she did. It was to get up in the morning. So I was like, if it did work for her, and she's about the same age as I am, or was at that time. Um, I'm like, okay, let's try it.

SPEAKER_03

I haven't tried that in the morning. I I I will do that this week. Yes, because that's really good. I haven't thought about it, but I am using it, I have used it for like yeah, a long time. But I use it when oh, you know, when you know that you have procrastinated something uh several times, like oh, I have to, for example, I have to pay my bills, yeah. Oh, I do it later, I do it tomorrow, because that's a fucking boring thing to do. Yeah, okay, okay. I will change my mindset now because do it with love. Yes, I did it with that. But you know, to be to be just real here, that's the one thing maybe I can procrastinate. So when I know that, okay, Marielle, now you have been procrastinating for a while, then I'm using the five-second rule. Okay, so just sit down at the computer and just start. Yeah, just you only need to give it five seconds. If you if you're not in the flow in five seconds, if you are not like starting it, you can walk away and do it later. That's the promise I give to myself. And every time, because you just need to start, you just need to like open the first file or log into to the bank. And you're off, sort of, yeah. And then you just okay, I can do it. I'm here, I'm here, I can do it. And also when you have to like do social media things for your business, that's also a thing. Just do it, give it five seconds, start with five seconds, and then do it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so are you are you also using it like both five seconds to get it started? Like, okay, in five, four, three, two, one, I am starting, and then you give it five seconds to implement. Is that because it sounds like you're doing no?

SPEAKER_03

I don't I don't count down to do it. I haven't I haven't thought about that. I yeah, maybe I should because that is actually uh yes, I I will I will develop that in myself, yeah. Um but no I am using it to like you only need to do this task for five seconds. Oh okay. If you're not in flow, if you're not if if it's you if you are struggling with it five seconds later, well don't do it. Yeah, but it's never I'm never going there because I'm it's just like I need to start. And it's and it's also when you are writing something, you know, with the feeling of when you have this blank paper on the computer, and okay, I know that I am supposed to write something here, you know what you are going to write, but you have struggled with starting it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Just start with the first sentence, yeah, and then it will flow.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Okay, so you I think everyone has their sort of own take or their own experience with the five-second rule, and it can develop into what you're saying right now. Uh it could be very basic, like what what she says in the beginning, like just counting down.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um, but I think that the point is that it's just as it's just not giving you the room to think because it's going quickly. Yes, exactly.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and I don't know if that five-second rules that I have been learning, I don't know if that's from Mel Robbins or what what it came from. Yeah, but yeah, it it's like the same.

SPEAKER_01

Doesn't matter, it could be your own take on something, but yeah, it it works. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

But I will try it in the morning and also to start other things.

SPEAKER_01

Awesome. And you who are listening, I mean, please share because I know that a lot of people are using this method as well. Uh, the the the five-second rule, and maybe that is the way that you started to listen to Mel Robbins and the way you got into this book that we're reading right now as well. That the reason as to why you wanted to read it, because the the the five-second rule was good, and you want to hear her other tools.
