Breeding farms, established primarily in the early to mid-19th century, played a critical economic role in shaping the landscape of the domestic slave trade. The systematic breeding of enslaved individuals transformed certain states, particularly Virginia, into central suppliers of enslaved labor to the southern United States. This shift had profound implications, as it enabled enslavers to maximize profit by artificially increasing the enslaved population without the need for costly importation from Africa after the Trans-Atlantic slave trade was curtailed.
