The death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells has sparked grief, questions, and intense discussion across the country. After a July 4th boat trip to a remote Mississippi barrier island, Nolan never returned home. His family—not the people who were with him—reported him missing. Days later, his body was recovered, and early public discussion turned to the possibility of an accidental drowning. But for many in the Black community, that explanation alone does not answer the most important question:  How did Nolan Wells end up dead?

In this episode, we examine the case through the lens of Black American history and collective memory. We explore why many Black Americans are skeptical of early official explanations, why Mississippi carries profound historical significance, and how centuries of racial-terror violence, inadequate investigations, and delayed justice continue to shape public trust today.
