Welcome and Congratulations
SPEAKER_00Welcome to your sterile processing externship. My name is Bill Rochelle, and this is Sterilization 101. And we are so glad that you are joining us today. First of all, congratulations. You should be very excited. This is an exciting step in your journey towards becoming a vital part of the healthcare team. You may be nervous, and that's normal. To help you feel prepared, let's walk through who you'll meet, what you'll experience, and where you'll be working. When things happen, why sterile processing is so critical, and how you can make your first day a success. This is so exciting. On your very first day, the key people you'll encounter are these people. You're going to meet your preceptor. This is your main mentor. They're going to guide your learning and keep you on track in sterile processing. You're going to meet other fellow sterile processing technicians. These are those frontline workers handling daily tasks like decontamination, assembly, sterilization, prep and package, building those case cards. These are the people that are going to help you, and a lot of them are going to train you and be your preceptors. You're going to meet the supervisors and the leads, maybe even some educators. These are the ones that are going to oversee the workflow, assign the duties, and make sure standards are met. You're going to read, you're going to meet fellow operating room staff. You may not meet them right away, but every trade you process supports their work and their patients. So what are you going to learn? On your first day, you can expect a lot of new insights. You're going to hear some new sounds, sterilizers, washers going, ultrasonic machines. You might even hear some practice fire alarm drills. You're going to hear so many great sounds in the sterile processing department. But I do not want you to worry. You are not expected to know right away everything, right? You're going to spend some time meeting your preceptor, turning the department, and getting familiar with these safety rules. You may see trays coming back from the operating room, machines running loudly, and staff moving around quickly. It's so exciting here in sterile processing. At first, your role will be mostly observing. You're going to learn the processes, maybe even have to read some SOP standard operating procedures. But this is going to be a very exciting time. And over time, you'll progress to assisting and eventually performing tasks under supervision. Where? We're going to talk about the who, what, where, when, and why of sterile processing. Where does all this happen? This is going to be in the sterile processing department, which is divided into zones. Decontamination, where contaminated instruments arrive, assembly, where trays are inspected, built, and packaged. Sterilization, where instruments are processed in autoclaves or low temperature sterilizers, also known as your gas plasma machines, your hydrogen peroxide sterilizers. Your sterile storage area, where you can see here behind me, where instruments are kept ready for the operating room. On day one, expect the shadowing decontamination or assembly to see the foundation of the workflow. As we move into the when of sterile processing during your externship, when does your learning begin? From the moment you step through that door. That first introduction, that first observation. It all matters. Most externships follow the department's normal schedule. So if the shift starts at 6 a.m., you start at 6 a.m. But be prepared to be early. Always remember if you are early, you're on time. If you are early, you are on time. And if you are on time, you are late. You never want to be late. You want to be early. Remember, during this internship, your job.
