13. No Gaines No Pain: You won't believe what Sergeant Gaines said about Pain
This is a story-form episode concerning the role that struggle and pain plays in personal growth.
The setting is a classroom at the U.S. Army Academy of Health Sciences building on the grounds of Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. It is the middle of July in 1991.
I am one of 62 soldiers who meet for the final academic session of our 20 week training course in Behavioral Sciences. With one last dose of instruction before graduation ceremonies begin later that day, a middle-aged Sergeant who is the teacher of our class leads us on a joyous gift giving exercise.
There is collective surprise and shock when the exercise takes a dramatic turn at the end of the meeting. Sergeant Gaines offers us a gift that we will never forget.
