49. Unrushed - Savor The Road On the Unhurried Path: Part 11 of My Let’s Go Around The Globe Travel Series
In this episode, I discuss the idea of Slow Travel. Slow travel is resisting the urge to do or see everything in a single trip or short window of time.
When we learn to travel at a slower pace … it allows for more meaningful experiences and serendipitous moments.
Slow travel to me is eating in the local restaurants, shopping in the markets, walking in the non touristy parts of town, striking up conversations with locals to learn about local history, traditions, culture, everyday life, utilizing the public transportation, and staying put for a little while.
I talk about the influence and impact that world adventurer and travel writer Rolf Potts has had on me. I discuss some of the key points that Rolf highlights in his book “Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel”
Four ideas that I talk about include:
- Embracing uncertainty and spontaneity over uncompromising itineraries
- Slowing down to savor moments rather than rushing
- Finding a more intentional way to live by focusing on experiences over possessions.
- Living with an awareness of mortality to make the most of the time that we have
I also share about the practicalities of being time rich, the consideration of living in cheaper areas so you will have more financial resources to travel, and the benefits of traveling light.
