According to recent reporting, the cyber threat landscape for MSPs shifted significantly in the second quarter of 2026, with identity overtaking malware as the primary method for initial access.

Modern attackers are increasingly leveraging legitimate tools, such as RMM platforms and reputable cloud services, to mask their lateral movement and data exfiltration within client environments.

Social engineering has also evolved, with users frequently being deceived by sophisticated browser-based prompts that bypass traditional email filters.

Furthermore, third-party integrations and supply chain vulnerabilities have expanded the attack surface, highlighting the risks of unmanaged vendor permissions.

To counter these trends, the sources suggest that MSPs must transition from basic endpoint security to behavioural monitoring and rigorous identity verification. This holistic approach focuses on detecting anomalous activity rather than relying solely on traditional IP blocking or antivirus software.
