Business Cards Still Close Deals

A friendly chat at a neighborhood yard sale turned into a monthly retainer—because I handed over a simple business card. That small, tangible artifact did what a polished website alone couldn’t: it made the business feel real, credible, and easy to contact. We break down how a well-crafted card, paired with smart follow-up, can still open doors in a digital-first world.
I unpack the essentials your card must include—name, role, phone, email, website—and when to add a physical address. We talk design choices that actually matter: clean layout, high contrast, readable fonts, and thick stock that signals quality. Then we go beyond print to integrate digital seamlessly with QR codes. You’ll learn when to choose static vs dynamic codes, how to link to a focused landing page with services and testimonials, and why testing your code on multiple phones prevents awkward moments in the field. I share practical tools like Canva for quick generation and paid platforms for branded, trackable links.
The conversation also explores buyer behavior across generations. Many senior decision makers still prefer something they can hold and file, which means a card increases your physical “findability.” Most important, we map the follow-up system that turns a card into revenue: give your card, get theirs, follow up within 24 hours, share a one-page capabilities link, and drive toward a simple next step. For printing, we compare fast local options like Staples for same-day runs and online favorites like VistaPrint for larger batches and premium finishes.

Yard Sale To New Client
SPEAKER_00So I just got a new client, and I thought the way I met them, I think, proves that business cards are still really essential. Right. So I was doing a yard sale. We we do an annual yard sale at our house. We have a ton of people that come over. We it's like a multifamily type yard sale. Five hours out there and we sell a bunch of stuff. We always end up making pretty good money and we get rid of a bunch of junk that we have to take to the dump anyway. That's the biggest one right there. Yeah. So we had a guy that came by, really nice guy, and I just started chatting with him. Um, he asked me what I do. I told him this is you know, I help small businesses grow. I do a lot of their online marketing, things like that. And he's like, Oh, I actually own several uh shops in the valley, and I'd like to like get into that. I just haven't done it yet. So I give him one of my business cards, and within two weeks, I had a new client, right? And it just kind of snowballed into me doing one job to multiple jobs to now a monthly retainer, right? Um, and it just like I think people forget how how much a business card can be a positive effect for their business, right? Like I think people think it's outdated, and I think it can really help long term. I think a few things that it really does is the first thing it feels tangible. Like when you give someone a business card, they're holding it, they're like, Oh, this is legit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it makes it real.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because sometimes you go to websites and you're like, I don't know. Like I've made a lot of websites, I'm like, it still feels like, is this real? Do they know what they're doing? Is it just they just set this up? Yeah, but something about a business card that has your actual information, your phone number, email, location, what you do.
SPEAKER_01For the people that actually care, right? Like, yeah, we you talked about like it being outdated, and yeah, there's gonna be a lot of people who just take your business card and throw it away. Yeah, but we're not gonna worry about those people because they're never your people, right? Like for the people that actually care, like they want to know that you're in a legit business, right? Right, and and I think that's a very simple way to do that.
Get Their Card And Follow Up
SPEAKER_00And I think another good tip too is like if you want to give a card out, that's fantastic. Also, if they're a business, if you're doing B2B stuff, get their card too. Yes, because then you're not just relying on them to contact you, but you can contact them.
SPEAKER_01I think that's actually I'm glad you brought that up because I think that's one of the most important things is they're gonna be busy. Like whoever you want to do business with, they have a life, they're gonna be busy. Yeah, so give them your card, but get their information and you be the one to follow up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it allows you to be proactive instead of just reactive and just waiting.
What To Print On Your Card
SPEAKER_01So it shows that you actually want their business, right?
QR Codes: Static Vs Dynamic
SPEAKER_00And so a couple of good things I think to have on your business card from the get-go is obviously your name, right? Right, your position, whether you're the owner, manager, you do sales, whatever it is, have that on there. Your contact information. You want to have phone number, email, phone number, email, address. If if you are a like brick and mortar place, you want to have the address on there. Right. But yeah, phone number, email is huge, especially B2B sales, website, and then last thing is website. Now, I like QR codes. I think QR card QR codes are huge. Um, it makes it super easy for them to turn it over, open up their phone, camera, and go straight to your website so they don't have to type anything in. Um, so a big suggestion that I like to give people is put a QR code on the back. Like if you have a front, just a front card, like where there's nothing on the back, that's fine, but pay the extra like five cents, get your QR code printed on the back, and then it makes it extremely easy to be like, hey, I have my website, you can just scan it on the back. And at this point, almost everybody understands what a QR code is, right?
SPEAKER_01Um, is there a QR code like generator that you'd recommend?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so Canva has a free one, so you could just use Canva, which is cool. Um I there are some other free ones, but I don't the problem is is if the some of them expire or after a certain amount of time, they'll like they'll mess you up. Like you can only do so many. And so I actually pay for a QR code generator because I use it for other client stuff.
SPEAKER_01So I pay for mine, but can't for dynamic QR codes, right? Yeah, you can do basically static and dynamic.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and so like I pay for mine, but that's because I I do I put logos in mine and I do a bunch of different things.
SPEAKER_01And if you ever plan on changing that information within the near future, get a dynamic one because then you can change it on like you can log in, change it, the information and it goes to the new information.
Generational Fit And Buyer Behavior
SPEAKER_00Exactly. And so I like that because I've changed my website a few times, but I haven't had to change my business cards, which makes it very super nice. Yeah, it makes it nice. So um, yeah, and the uh the other thing is too, it if you're gonna do in a B2B sales um and you're looking for the higher-end client, so somebody that owns a business, they're probably a little bit older, right? So I think the generational gap between not needing uh business cards hasn't hit yet, anyway. So if you're looking to get the top-tier people, business owners or high up sales, it's probably good to give them a business card still. Because I think a lot of people can connect with this. Like my client was a little bit older, he's been in the he's a blue-collar guy. I I think just being like, hey, go to this website, yeah, would not have worked. Wait, it wouldn't have helped, it wouldn't have connected, it would have been kind of like oh, like if you were to tell him, like, just go to this website and not give it a business card and have a business card where it has all my information on it. And he was looking at it, he's like, Oh, cool, cool, and then put it in his wallet and put it away. And it was just like, okay.
SPEAKER_01When will that see the light of day?
Design, Paper, And Printing Options
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but and but I was well, and it's but it ended up working, right? Like we connected the next week and now he's been a client for quite a few months. So um, it's a good thing to make sure you have all the proper information on there, have your website on there, make it clean, don't make it so cluttered or like, oh, I'm gonna do a cool background.
SPEAKER_01Don't worry about the design as much on this one. Like it, I mean, it depends on what it is. If you're a graphic designer, you better make sure your design is on point, right? Use nice thick paper, like just make it feel good. Yeah, but if it's like a lawn mowing business, like they just need the information.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, have your name, logo, website, and the information we talked about, and you'll be fine. It's not a big deal. And there's so many places you can get them printed, staples, you can get them printed at VistaPrint. Yeah, Staples is fantastic, it's so cheap and it's so fast. So it gets you get the basically the same day if you do it before like 2 p.m., which is pretty awesome.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it's it's yeah, it's very affordable, very quick. Like, I would highly recommend Staples Printing Center for like to anybody.
Low Cost, High Impact Summary
SPEAKER_00Honestly, it's the only reason I go into Staples. Or some Amazon returns will make you go to Staples instead of UPS. Oh, and I've done that, but other than that, it's like that's pretty much all I use for Staples is their print center. But yeah, they're phenomenal. So, but yeah, business cards still matter, they're still tangible proof that you exist. It builds trust between people, especially an older generation. They still like having the physical paper. My parents like still like having physical photos, and it's like, you're still printing photos? We change like one photo in our house consistently, you know. And so, and it's a low cost. So, for low cost, and it can really create high impression. So, make sure that you take time and actually make your credit or your uh business cards worth something.
