How successful are you feeling now? I hope you're loving this podcast. I really, really, really want you to embody your success that you already have, so that you can lean back into it, thoroughly, enjoy it and then create even more. How cool would that be? Enough with the pushing on through? And if this, then that, oh, so boring. So here's my evening practice to up level even more, should you choose to play with this, so I don't know when I started doing this. Everything just evolves through my own practice and working with my clients, and this is how it stands at the moment. So I'm recording this before the camino, so that I take the pressure of myself when I get back, so that I have lots of time to feel and embody the joys of having walked all the way from Siena to Rome. So I'll tell you about my Camino in another episode, but this did start. I'm pretty sure it it either started or it was a major practice for me on the Portuguese Camino last year. So what I did is, instead of writing a diary because I wanted to write a diary, because it's wow, what a thing to do, right, I want a record of it. And instead of instead of writing like a record of the day, I wrote the highlights of the day, and this did lots of really good things. It focused me on the highlights only and it made me let go of rehearsing anything. That wasn't so much fun, because what I noticed about reading people's stories about doing the Camino is there was so much stuffing about how hard it was, how much they suffered, and I didn't want that story. So I'd already decided that wasn't how I was going to do it, and then I amplified that by drawing my conscious mind's attention to everything good around me, and this practice increased my ability to do that, which is really interesting. That's why I have a video of me going up what, effectively, was a waterfall was supposed to be the path, but it rained and rained, and rained.

Speaker 1:

And I'm smiling because I'm not I'm not really that Involved in the usual so wet several and I had water, like I was waterlogged by this time. I mean, my feet were just swimming in water. It was ridiculous, we were absolutely drenched. And I'm smiling because I'm not focused on everything that's wrong and because I still believe it's gonna get sunny because we'd had some pretty much until that. That point and I I don't know, it doesn't what difference does it make Like I can sit in the misery of it or I can sit in the joy of it. How I experience it, I have some choice there and I want to exercise that choice more powerfully. So that's a decision, and I see that as a getting to know my mind and living more skillfully so I can create and experience more joy. And that's what I did. It worked really well. I just sat down every night and wrote the highlights, everything it was good, and completely ignored the rest. And what's interesting is, as I've I, my intention was to write a book about it before going off on the next Camino. I haven't done it yet because my heartfelt priorities were other than finishing the book, which is fine, it'll all. It'll all emerge over time, I'm sure, because what I love about it is I have started writing it and I wrote up my journal notes from the trip and I thought it'd be really cool to write next to it.

Speaker 1:

What actually happened, as in this, is interesting, isn't it? What actually happened, like there's a definite truth, because both things are true. The highlights are true, the low lights are true, and a mixture of the two. There's lots of different ways of looking at it. Yes, it rained a lot on that day and I got very wet, but I was also really happy. So, which is true, there's lots of different ways of looking at things, aren't there? I'm not saying everything's relative and there's no truth, that's just a nonsense. There's clearly a reality, but how we choose to experience it, if we can change how we experience it, that gives us power and that gives us freedom and that gives us more of what we want.

Speaker 1:

So, instead of having to work really, really hard to get something, we choose to experience it as we travel because there isn't actually a destination. I mean, we got to santiago and, yeah, it's beautiful, blah, blah, blah, and we're like I didn't really want to come here, like it wasn't. I didn't want to go to santiago as in, I just want to get there. I could have got a bus, I could have flown straight in. It wasn't the point. The point was to to walk as a pilgrimage, as a time for pausing, taking space out of life and going deep within and just being, being with myself, being with my friend, just being with Portugal and Spain and the road that thousands of people had walked before me is just something very beautiful.

Speaker 1:

For me about pilgrimaging is that word going on a pilgrimage? So, with that in mind, what's now happened is I just write highlights of my day every day, and then what I do because that was working really well and then what I do is make myself pick one and record that in the space in the One Minute Gently, rebellious journal. It's really hard. I didn't think it would be that hard. I thought it'd be obvious that one thing would stick out more. But no, take Sunday, for instance. Sunday was our family roast day, my adult boys coming along, my daughter-in-law and my granddaughter. We were all together. But in the morning before they came, oh, my goodness, what a wonderful morning I had. I had a lovely long shower, just general self-care, looking after myself, and then I put on my walking clothes the clothes I will wear for two weeks, solid and really got into camino mode and then I started getting everything out, weighing it, putting stuff back, making decisions. I was in absolute heaven. So much fun, such a beautiful process of what am I prepared to carry. It's just really good feeling, really getting excited and prepared. Now the podcast is launched and then my family comes around and it's just a joy to see them.

Speaker 1:

I have successfully managed to raise two men. I mean, how does that happen? I mean, you take it from the beginning. You know, getting pregnant, creating a baby, the whole thing. Life is just full of miracles, the whole thing, surviving, being a single mum, surviving all sorts of things. It's not easy to raise children, is it? There's so much going on in our lives that we can get stuck in the struggle of and not notice when we've actually succeeded and having my family together.

Speaker 1:

It was a joyful day. There was laughter and my granddaughter oh my goodness, she's just. She has reached ridiculously cute age and does some very funny things. I'm not that good with babies. I mean I liked her because she's my granddaughter, but you know I'm not a baby person. But she's super cute, she's funny. She's starting to really connect with me now. That was joyful.

Speaker 1:

So how on earth do you pick a highlight? I found it really tough. I really struggled with that. I just listed all the highlights and could have gone on for even longer and then was tired. That's the thing with this once you get, once you get on a roll, once you train your mind to notice the highlights and just let go of the rubbish, my goodness, it's really interesting.

Speaker 1:

Sometimes I'm just too tired. I can't write anymore. I can't. I'll just save those inside of me. Life is good. I'm happy. Yeah, there's some stuff I still want. Yes, there's stuff I still yearn for, but that's my drive that keeps me growing and moving forward, and there's. There's always stuff right. There's stuff I still yearn for, but that's my drive that keeps me growing and moving forward, and there's there's always stuff right. There's always a mixture of stuff because there isn't a destination, it's not, we'll never get it done, it will never be like everything's perfect. No, it's not happening. So I want to enjoy the actual living. Oh you, I guess you might now want to know what my highlight was. I did choose the connecting with Lily. I, I guess you might now want to know what my highlight was. I did choose the connecting with Lily. I did choose the connecting with my granddaughter. So let's pull this together for you, should you wish to play with this practice. So I call it the evening minute. That's if you were just going to put one highlight.

Speaker 1:

I actually find it really helpful to offload my day in the most beautiful attention drawn to all of the good stuff way doesn't take long. It's a really nourishing practice. I'm just so grateful for it because it's so much better than a gratitude or even an appreciation practice. I'm literally scanning for highlights. It. It forces my mind to be very involved, whereas I found when I was in doing gratitude practices I can kind of disconnect from it. There can sometimes be all oughts and shoulds, whereas this is scanning the day and saying which were the best points. So you can't just put all of the things. It's asking for a higher level of, of sorting, and I find that's a good process. It's it's it's creating a habit of shifting through the day. It's changing my perspective. It's looking at things through different lengths.

It's slightly effortful but it also seems to, for me anyway, have the same satisfaction of offloading my day. You know, letting go of my day, but letting go of it in a nourishing way, in a yeah, but this was good, this was good. Notice that, notice that, notice that, absorb that and it helps to combat that negative cognitive bias that the mind has in order to keep us safe. It's working really well for me. And then I make myself pick the highlight and I pop that in the one minute gently rebellious journal. And that's been really good for me, because I don't find it easy to do so, because it's effortful, it becomes an ingrained practice. It's got enough effort, it's got enough comfort and challenge there to create a sticky habit. You know it's there's, it's meaty enough. I like it anyway. That's it. Try it.
