Peptides have taken the wellness world by storm, but separating science from hype can be challenging. Nurse practitioners Nicole Baldwin and Kelly White cut through the noise to deliver a straightforward explanation of Sermorelin - a synthetic peptide that works with your body's natural systems to combat age-related decline.
"Peptides really are the science behind boosting your body to do what it is naturally built to do," explains Kelly, setting the tone for this information-packed conversation. The duo breaks down how Sermorelin consists of the first 29 amino acids of human growth hormone, stimulating the pituitary gland to secrete more of your own natural growth hormone - a process that naturally diminishes as we age.
What makes this episode particularly valuable is the practical explanation of benefits: improved body composition through fat breakdown and lean muscle maintenance, increased bone density to combat osteoporosis risk, enhanced sleep quality, and better energy levels and mood stability. Nicole and Kelly share real-world examples, including Kelly's husband's experience with Sermorelin, noting significant improvements in both his sleep quality and emotional resilience.
The hosts emphasize throughout that while Sermorelin offers promising benefits, it isn't appropriate for everyone. They stress the importance of working with knowledgeable providers who understand contraindications and proper monitoring protocols. This balanced approach demonstrates their commitment to responsible patient education.

Introduction to Peptides
Speaker 1Hey guys, welcome back to another episode of Tattoos and Telehealth, where I'm Nicole Baldwin, nurse practitioner, and this is my great colleague, kelly White, also a nurse practitioner, and I am post rhinoplasty, so I do look ridiculous. However, here we are nonetheless still wanting to bring you some information and we want to talk about today peptides. That is the hot topic of what's going on today, and last week we talked about NAD. This week we want to talk about some Orlin and I'm going to let Kelly break it down to you as far as the scientific of it, the scientific side of it, and then we'll go into what it's used for and it is it possibly beneficial for you? Our lawyers make a say this is not to be considered medical advice. We're just two gals just having a conversation and this also does not constitute a patient provider relationship. So so, kelly, what the heck is sermorelin? And for patients who have never heard of it, and for patients who have heard of it but are like, okay, what's the skinny?
Science Behind Sermorelin
Speaker 2so the first thing I want to start off with is peptides really are the science behind boosting your body to do what it is naturally built to do. So peptides are a naturally occurring thing. It lives in your body. So the big thing I want to stress to people is, when you guys are researching peptides, go to a reputable provider, go to a reputable facility, go to someone that knows the science behind what they're giving you. Please, please, please. There's just so many things. You know this. Things can become a fad. Peptides have become a fad. So just do your homework. And that's kind of why we're putting this out there. We want you guys to know the science behind it. So when someone is trying to sell you something, you can kind of vet them to know what they're talking about. So, samorlan, like Nicole said, it is a peptide. It is a synthetic peptide. When you're purchasing it, that means it's synthetic.
Speaker 2It was created, but it consists of the first 29 amino acids of the human growth hormone and that is the shortest fragment that retains the full biological activity of your native, your personal growth hormone, and that stimulates your pituitary to secrete that hormone. So back that up. What does that mean? So your pituitary secretes growth hormone. Well, as we age and that naturally starts to go away, because as we age we don't need growth hormone as much the pituitary kind of starts to slow that process down.
Speaker 2Well, along with that we start to get those aging signs. And that doesn't mean that it doesn't just mean, you know, like fine lines and wrinkles and all that stuff. It also means like decreased ability to put on muscle mass, decreased ability to heal our bones when we have breaks, less sleep quality and just kind of overall that fatigue and malaise that we get when we feel older, when we get older. But so what Samorlan does is it comes in and it stimulates your pituitary to kind of push a little bit harder to secrete a little bit more growth hormones, so you get those added benefits. So it's the synthetic version of what your body has already created to kind of stimulate that a little bit. So so that's the science behind it. But Nicole kind of wrapped that up into a little bit more layman's terms for our guys.
Benefits for Body Composition
Speaker 1Sure, sure, absolutely. So let's just say it's not FDA approved for adult anti-aging. However, it is used off label for um improved body composition. So the growth hormone promotes fat breakdown and supports lean muscle maintenance. And so, just like Kelly was talking about, for that lean muscle, as we age our body slows down, right, nobody that's 90, okay, maybe on a rare, rare occasion, but nobody that's 90 is as strong as somebody who's in their 40s, 50s, 60s, right. So that is where it improves that body composition. So it promotes the fat breakdown, lean muscle.
Bone Density and Sleep Improvements
Speaker 1It also increases bone density and it helps bone turnover and that reduces osteoporosis risk, which is a real thing for everyone as we're aging, but especially women. So the osteoporosis risk, the bone, fragile bones becoming, instead of nice and strong, becoming spongy and more more likely to break. And so you know, how many times have you heard, you know, grandma, whoever has a broken hip or whatever, and that's a lot of times just due to osteoporosis, it's due to the fragile bones and sometimes they can just break. We call that a pathological fracture when they just break because there's no trauma, and sometimes there's, you know, a tumble or a fall and that also can cause, you know, a break easily. So the increase in the bone density is great for patients that are 40, 50 and older, especially for women that are 40, 50 and older, especially for women.
Speaker 1It also enhances the sleep quality, which I like, because, being perimenopausal, sleep quality is something that is to be earned for, so the growth hormone secretion normally surges in deep sleep and so it restores a more natural rhythm to improve that sleep architecture. So it really does a good job in enhancing your sleep quality just overall, and that's for men and women. And the other thing that I really like is better energy and better mood. Patients often report, they tell us, I don't feel as fatigued as I used to, or I feel more uplifted in my mood, I feel more energized and and that's from a more balanced growth hormone level. Right, and we can measure these levels and we will measure these levels to make sure that everything is safe, and this is not something that is good for every single patient. But there's a lot of chatter out there about what is Sermoralin, and so we're just giving you this is. This is really what it's all about. So because some more than works by tapping into your own growth hormone access, it's less likely to overshoot what you need and that's where those side effects are caused.
Dosing and Administration Tips
Speaker 1And so when you do this, when you do this, some, you do the Samorlin. It is synthetic but your body already produces it and so it is usually given in a subcutaneous injection and it's usually given before bedtime three to five times per week. Um, subcutaneous just means under the skin, not deep in the muscle, um, and not and not orally, so it is given subcutaneous in the fat. So most of the time, like in a love handle, is would be a good way to explain the subcutaneous. It's generally well tolerated, but side effects can include redness or discomfort at the injection site, as with injecting anything headache, okay, flushing, but that all of that super, super rare.
Speaker 1So there is some contraindications for this medication and there is some monitoring that is involved in it. So make sure that your provider that when you talk to your provider about this, that you also consider all the contraindications and that they consider that as well. Anyone who's prescribing this should be well aware, is well-educated on those contraindications. Is it right for you? Because it isn't right for everyone, right? There is certain situations where it just isn't a good option. So we want to make sure that everyone's aware this is not good for everyone. It is not a fix-all, but it is a great way that we are able to enhance our own bodies, health and wellness, and you know, that evening push that your body has from your pituitary to give a little bit of extra growth hormone at night.
Speaker 2That's why it's just in the evening. So I've had patients ask me you know why do I have to do it at night? That's why, because that's your natural, we're trying to mimic your body's natural release and your body's natural occurrence. And um, so, uh, full disclosure. My husband uses some Moreland and after I started him on it that was that was probably the very first thing he noticed was he got such a good night's sleep after that very first injection. I love it so good.
Speaker 2Um, and we do the every other night thing because, like Nicole, like Nicole said, you can't do it daily. If you do it every day, you can only go five days, then you need to take a two-day break. So every other day dosing is just better because then you don't have to take a break just every other day. But I've also noticed like he kind of just goes with the flow, the things that used to just really really get under his skin as he's gotten older. That would just really aggravate him and he would hold on to that and just be really frustrated.
Personal Experiences and Conclusion
Speaker 2He seems much more able to go with the flow and be able to deal with the highs and lows of life right, and so I see that his mood has much better improved and it's really been a game changer for him. So I really encourage people as you age guys, especially for me and Nicole. We've been very open about being perimenopausal and how that ebbs and flows with us, something that can help your body naturally deal with those mood swings and the ebbs and flows of life. It's truly been a game changer for him. It really has.
Speaker 1Awesome, awesome. Well, there is something else important about this and we're going to go to another podcast about that here in just a minute because we want to make sure that we we capture the right audience. We are going to talk about some Moreland versus testosterone and we are going to talk about the benefits and the risks and the differences between the two, because people do use one over the other. Um, because of this, the, the intense safety, um over over the, all the risks that, all of the risks that come with testosterone. So we're going to talk about that in the next podcast and we will hope to see you there. You can find us at Hamilton telehealthcom and, uh, we'll be happy to uh to talk to you more about it.
