When the future feels uncertain, the smartest move is to get ready before you have to. Welcome to more for active midlifers in the middle of everything and ready for more. Hi, I'm Kathy, certified leader, career advisor, and midlife mentor. And I'm here to encourage you and walk beside you and help you grow into the next best version of yourself, no matter where you are in your life or how you got here. If you're around 50 or beyond, you know about the challenges we face in the workplace. And with the economy the way it is, with companies folding and downsizing and layoffs looming, many of us are plagued with uncertainty. This episode addresses concerns that midlifers face when their jobs and careers are on the line. And I'll show you how you can be proactive right now and what to do to prepare. This is part one of our career series. And today's episode is called Job Insecurity. I've been hearing it everywhere, and I know you have too, Bedlifers feeling the pressure. You've given years to your company, but the signs are there. The career landscape is shifting and jobs are disappearing, and technology is moving faster than ever. And you're left wondering, is my job on the line? Believe me, I get it. I've been there. I was downsized and displaced in my early midlife years, and I'll be honest, it's gut wrenching. The stress. And that's why today we're talking about how to prepare now, mentally, financially, and professionally, so that you're ready if and when the change comes. After 20 years in HR, I know that midlifers face hurdles that younger workers don't. But guess what? We're gonna tackle them together and come out stronger on the other side. Here are five things you can do now to prepare while you're still employed. Number one, mindset preparation. Don't panic. Fear is normal, but action is power, so shift from fear to empowerment. And to do that, just remind yourself of your value. You have experience and wisdom and judgment. And all of these are assets that younger workers cannot duplicate. Number two, financial preparation. Review expenses, cut non-essentials, build or protect your emergency fund, research the severance policies and Cobra health coverage, unemployment benefits, and do it now, not later, and budget conservatively. Eliminate big unnecessary spending. You know the drill, but you gotta do it. Number three, professional preparation. Update your resume and LinkedIn profile. Highlight the transferable skills and achievements in recent growth and focus on relevance over job titles and activate your network. Reach out quietly to mentors and former colleagues and professional groups and let trusted connections know that you're exploring new opportunities. At this time, it's important to sharpen your skills. Take free or affordable online courses and stay competitive and focus on the skills in demand technology literacy, communication, and adaptability. Number four, emotional preparation. Accept the emotional weight I know that you're going through. It's a lot. And there's so much uncertainty out there. Job insecurity does bring grief and anger and anxiety. So give yourself permission to feel it. Prioritize self-care. That means exercise and rest. Laugh, have hobbies. These are not luxuries. They're fuel and build a support system. Lean on your friends and family, a career coach, or support groups that are focused on midlife career transitions. Number five, strategic action plan. Create a plan B career vision. Identify the different industries or roles that interest you now. And start looking into those as your plan B. Consider interim jobs, a stepping stone job that can provide income and momentum while you work toward the long-term goal. When I was going through this, I anticipated my job terminating. And I got a part-time job through a city parks department that had a building that they rented out to the residents for special events. That meant weddings and showers and classes and community meetings and things like that. I did not know that it was going to involve more than just making sure the guests didn't do any damage to the place. I became an event planner. I enjoyed it so much that I contracted myself out to other venues so I could do the same for them. I enjoyed it. I really did. And the people that I met there, people who worked with me, were absolutely phenomenal. And I could see them as lifelong friends. It was a wonderful time in my life. And it came at the perfect time for me. So if you have an interest in interning or working a few hours doing something you know you will love, this would be the time to explore the possibilities. Organize your life, up your game, your wardrobe, and your workplace with a makeover if you can, sprucing up and making your home workspace efficient and accessible for classes, resume updating, and more when the time comes. Take a moment for yourself to find calm through prayer and quiet reflection or simply standing barefoot in the soil. Self-care isn't a side note right now, it's essential. So fresh air, sunlight, movement, these simple things work wonders for your soul. Preparing today lays the foundation for tomorrow's success. It gives you back a sense of control over your future. And the good news is it's not too late to start. Right now is the perfect time to move forward before the layoffs or unexpected changes become your reality. Ready to take your next step?
