Hey guys, welcome back to this week's episode of the podcast.

Today we're gonna be covering a topic which is a little bit controversial in some circles, but I wanted to lay it out on the table for you and give you my opinion on the weight loss injections like Manjaro and Wigovi and all the other different brand names that you're getting nowadays. And I've had several people, I'd say, over the last few months who have asked my opinion on this. And the truth is that as I've started to learn more about these drugs, my opinion has changed somewhat. So I first came across these drugs with a client. I ran about 18 months ago now. And this was a lady, an elderly lady, in fact, who was carrying a little bit of extra body fat, but it wasn't excessive. And when she first told me that she'd gone to a private clinic and they'd recommended, she'd take a weight loss injection. I was actually quite frustrated. I felt that she'd been mis sold this product. I felt that it wasn't necessary and I almost felt a little bit offended that she felt the need to speak to somebody else about her weight loss, as opposed to speaking to me about it. And anyway, she's a very strong willed character and she I did to proceed with the injections anyway. And the results were interesting, to say at least, within the first few weeks, she'd lost half a stone. She was really excited, and then when we did an inbody scan and we looked at the composition of that weight loss, we noticed that about 50% of that weight loss was actually attributed to muscle, which I wasn't too happy about. So I gave her some tips and some things that we needed to do. We structured her training in a slightly different way, so we include more weight training. We encouraged her to increase her protein intake and she was able to regain that muscle tissue whilst going on to lose in total around 15 kgGs of weight, which put her right down at the lower end of what her healthy BMI should have been. So the results were remarkable, and having gone through that process and educated myself on what these drugs actually do, I do have a slightly more favourable opinion on them now compared to when I was less well educated. So, what are these drugs? So effectively, drugs like we go V, and Monjaro, I think the other one's called. They are a group of drugs which resemble a hormone, which you produce naturally. Okay? So these are GLP1 agonists, which stands for glucagon like peptides. And what these drugs do is, you know, there's a multitude of effects that they have within the body. So the first thing that they do is one of the strong side effects actually nausea, okay? So often when you eat, you feel quite nauseous after, and that in and of itself can help to reduce caloric intake. The second thing that they do is they delay gastric emptying, right? So constipation is another side effect because it actually prolongs the time that it takes for your body to digest food and excrete that food, which means that you feel fuller for longer. Some of the newer forms of these drugs, like Manjaro, actually increase the amount of insulin that your body produces when you eat foods, which helps to transport those nutrients into cells such as your muscles, your liver, and even fat cells as well. And this can have favourable benefits for people with pre-iabetes or people with type 2 diabetes who struggle to produce insulin. Now, I do think that these drugs can be extremely beneficial for a significant group of the population. And the reason for that is, you produce the hormone naturally within your body, but the levels of those hormones that you produce can vary quite significantly from person to person. So a person who's never struggled with their weight and has always been relatively lean, may naturally produce more of this hormone than a person who's always struggled with obesity. And the problem is, as you become more overweight, more obese, your body tends to produce less of these hormones as time goes by. So obesity does tend to get worse and worse and harder and harder for people to rectify as you get further and further away from that healthy, natural state, that you should be in. So first things first, I do believe that these drugs are actually making it easier for people who find it harder to diet. They're not just lazy. They don't just lack willpower. Some of these people are just at a little bit of a disadvantage genetically and hormonally compared to people who don't struggle with their weight. So I do think it provides a more of a level playing field and it bridges that gap from people who always struggle with dieting and they make and it makes that dieting process easier. So for those people, I am actually in support of these drugs. Now, how do we use these drugs safely? So first of all, it is important to note that some of these drugs, some of the newer types, are quite new and they haven't been as widely used as they are now before. They've typically only been used historically in people with Comorbities such as diabetes. But now that some of them have been approved for obesity as well, a much higher percentage of a population are using them now, and therefore you can expect to see more side effects. And one of the most notable concerns for me that has began to surface of late is that people are actually experiencing age related macular degeneration, which is an issue with your vision earlier when they use these drugs. That's not to say that everybody will experience this, but people who are using these drugs are more likely to experience quite rapid macular degeneration, which is effectively can contributes of a loss of vision compared to people who aren't using them. So you must be aware of those potential side effects and speak to your doctor about them before you begin these treatments. The other thing that I wanted to discuss with you as well was whenever you lose any type of weight, typically speaking, a percentage of that weight that you lose will be attributed to muscle loss. That'ss pretty natural, to be honest. And the types of things that we do at transformation fit help to offset that. Now, what we see with these drugs is that between 30 and 40% of the weight that people lose is related to muscle tissue. Now, if you're really overweight and you've got a really high body fat percentage, you know, the absolute priority for you needs to be to get those body fat levels down, even if it means losing a little bit of muscle. But the leer you are and the longer you stay on these drugs and the more severe it causes you to restrict your caloric intake, the more muscle you will lose. So all of the things that we recommend to our clients who aren't using these drugs, such as regularly using weight training as a tool to prevent muscle loss, such as eating a sufficient amount of protein, you know, 1.5 to 2 grams per kilo of body weight intake of protein and a daily basis, all of those things become more and more important when you use these drugs. So it's not as if you get to use these drugs and you just get a pass and you're able to generate a perfectly healthy body without having to think about it. If anything, it's more important that you do things like resistance training and you consume the right amount of protein because the muscle loss, because of the higher amounts of weight you lose in will become exacerbated. So to round this off, my feelings on this are, look, if you're somebody who has typically struggled with weight for a lot of your adult life, you've tried different diets, you've tried exercise, and you can honestly look yourself in the eye and say that I just don't have the willpower. And I find this extremely difficult, then you know what? I'd consult with a doctor and I would probably say that it's worth at least looking into these drugs. Don't be too proud and say, well, I want to do it naturally and I want to do it on my own, when your hormones and your mindset to be honest with you, hasn't allowed you to achieve those goals thus far and you've tried multiple times over, okay? Don't be too proud. If you feel like you need help, then these drugs can offer you that lend in hand in order to help you achieve those goals. But you've got to try and focus on doing the right things like the resistance training, like the protein intake, like proper hydration, otherwise, you won't be happy with the overall result at the end of it. You don't just want to lose a load of weight and become what you might have heard people describe as skinny fat. You want to look healthy. You want to look fit. You want to, you know, retain your muscle tissue as much as possible because it's extremely important as you age. So there's my faults on the weight loss injections. Do I recommend it? The answer to that is it depends on your individual circumstance. If you'd like to discuss with me about your individual circumstance in a little bit more detail and if you are considering these drugs, what are the things that I would recommend to make sure that we're doing it the right way, the safe way, feel free to drop me a DM on Instagram at Josh Rott or feel free to email me info at transformationfit.co.uk. We've had a number of clients who are using these drugs now. I've had a couple of family members who have started using these drugs as well. We've done extensive research on it and we feel that these drugs can work alongside what we're doing at transformation fear just has to be managed in the correct way, okay? So I hope that all makes sense, guys. I look forward to speaking to you on my next podcast. Take care.
