Hi everyone and welcome back to the podcast in this week's episode. We're gonna be discussing the four pillars of your health. So this is a concept that I've spent a lot of time thinking about and developing over the years of working with over a thousand clients now And when it comes down to it, there are only really four pillars, topics, categories, if you like, which your health consists of now most personal trainers, fitness professionals will focus on one of these pillars. Clearly exercise. Some of them may focus in our nutrition, and it's great to see that more fitness studios, personal trainers, companies are now starting to take nutrition advice more seriously with their members. But it isn't just limited to those two things. When you qualify as a personal trainer and you do your courses, you are told explicitly we're here to deliver exercise programmes. We're not here to cancel on nutrition. We're not here to discuss mental health. We're not here to discuss anything that we're not quote unqu "qualified to do. And in my opinion, it may sound controversial, but I think that that is BS, to be honest with you. If you're one of my members listening to this right now, you most definitely don't want to come exclusively to us for your health and fitness needs, whether that be weight loss, strength, better energy levels, etcet, et cet. and be told that our remit is only exercise and we're going to have to refer you to nutritionist or, you know, a counsellor or a sleep expert. You don't want to be passed from pillar to post to talk about all these different topics of your health. You need to come to someone or somewhere where you can get all of your health needs or at least most of them, right? We aren't medical doctors. It's clear, you know, it's important that to clarify that. But you don't want to be passed from pilletar posts to all these different professionals having to repeat yourself over and over again to get simple, actionable advice that can make a meaningful difference and help move the needle forward related to your health, right? So that's why at transformation fear, and there are other places that do this as well, you need to have a holistic approach to your health and fitness, telling people to train is not enough, okay? And as an industry, we need to do better. Right, I'm going to stop myself there from runing. Now, back to the four pillars. The four pillars that we talk about and that I teach to my clients are exercise, nutrition, mindset, and sleep. So nutrition's really simple. It's how you fuel, when you fuel, what you fuel your body with in order to help you achieve your body composition, performance, or health goals. The exercise is the types of things that we're doing in the gym in terms of our exercise, but also our daily activity outside of the gym as well. Okay. Mindset is essentially all about how you talk to yourself and how you view yourself because you can tell me whatever you want. I'm not really going to judge people on what they say to me. I'm going to judge people on what they do, how they behave, and what their habits are. And your habits, what you do on a daily basis, how you talk to yourself, how you treat yourself, is all an indication of what's going on between your ears. So we have to try and develop a positive relationship with ourself. That is what mindset encompasses. And the certain strategies and tools and techniques that you can use to get very quick wins with your mindset and improve that self-talk and improve that self esteem. And then we've got sleep. Now, sleep is often overlooked by so many health and fitness professionals, because quite bluntly, you don't get taught about it when you qualify as a personal trainer. It is not even discussed, which I think is awful to be honest with you. Basic sleep education should be a lot of this stuff should be taught in schools, to be honest, but it's not. That's okay. We can we can deal with that. But sleep can sometimes be the number one thing that is holding you back from achieving your goals. And the best way to think about the four pillars of your health is to envisage a pillar in front of you. In order for that pillar to be stable, okay, we need all four of those pillars to be intact and strong. If one of them is crumbling, then the whole structure is at risk, okay? So we need to make sure that we're taking a holistic approach when it comes to our health and fitness in order to support the overall structure of our health. OK? So that's what the four pillars is all about. It's taking a step back and having a holistic view of your health and not just thinking about one of these things and obsessing about one of these pillars, we've got to make sure that we're incorporating habits, tools, strategies, techniques that support all of the pillars of your health, okay? So how do we get started in implementing before pillars of our Health? There are certain pillars that act as triggers or anchors for the other. So in my scenario, I know that sleep and exercise are the two anchor or trigger pillars which have a massive effect on the mindset and the nutrition pillars. So when I'm managing my own health and fitness, the anchor point for me is, am I hitting my sleep, okay? And if I can focus on having the correct sleep hygiene, the correct wind down routines in the evening, the correct wake up routines in the morning, I know that I give myself the best possible chance of hitting 100% sleep. Okay. And if I don't hit 100% sleep, that shows up in terms of my eating habits, my energy levels, my motivation, and also my general mood. And if thoseows for, you know, several things are negatively affected by the lack of sleep, then I know that I'm not going to be ast motivated to train. My cravens are going to be stronger for those crappy foods that I don't really get cravens for unless I'm particularly stressed, tired, underslept. And I know that my self-talk, my resilience, my willpower isn't as strong, if I'm not sleeping right. So for me, the fundamental anchor in terms of the pillars is the sleep, okay? Now, secondarily to that, if I'm exercising on a regular basis, that pretty much takes care of most or all of my mental health issues, right? So I don't want you to, you know, I don't want to overe exaggerate and make out like I'm in some kind of existential crisis right now. But what I can tell you is that I'm just like you, right? I get stressed more often than I like to admit, to be honest with you. I can get anxious sometimes. Sometimes I can feel low in mood and low on motivation, right? And my self-talk can't always be the most positive, the most enthusiastic, and the most empathetic towards myself. So exercise for me, as I've mentioned in previous podcasts, has a life-changing effect on me. And if I'm exercising on a regular basis, again, nutrition tends to be better because I'm focussed on recovering after the workouts, fuelling those workouts appropriately, making sure that I'm not eating crappy food too close to bed because that's going to have an impact on my sleep, et cetera, et cetera. When I exercise and when I sleep right, I'm so much more conscious of the nutrition pillar automatically as well, right? It makes it a lot easier for me to eat healthy if my exercise is consistent and my sleep is consistent. And likewise with the mindset, I'm kinder to myself when I'm training on a regular basis. I speak to myself in a more empathetic and caring way and I have more patience and less of those toxic traits come out when I'm exercising consistently. So for me, I don't focus overly, you know, heavily too much on mindset and nutrition. Reason being, if I focus on my sleep and I focus on my training, then those two pillars kind of take care of themselves, okay? And I'd like you to spend a little bit of time after this podcast, just being honest with yourself and thinking about what is it that makes me go off track? What are the things that show up in my life and cause me to be inconsistent and cause me to neglect my health? Okay? And then link that back to the pillar that seems to crumble or seems to break down first. I guarantee you will find that one or two of these pillars are the fundamental trigger pillars, which help keep the others in track. Okay? So after this podcast, spend some time thinking about it. When things go wrong for me to do with my health and fitness, what are the pillars that go first and conversely, when things are going well for me in my health and fitness, what are the habits that I'm focussed on the most, which seem to have that that avalanche effect, right? That allow all the other habits to kind of gain momentum and continue to move at pace without necessarily focussing on them all. So that's a little bit of insight into the four pillars of health. I'd love for you to get in touch with me on Instagram at Josh Ryett and just let me know what was the most useful thing you found on this podcast and what are the pillars that you struggle with the most? If you DM me on Instagram, I'm more than happy to get back to you, give you some advice, ask you some more questions, and give you some tools, techniques, and strategies that you can employ to help you the most with those pillars you're struggling with. I hope that all makes sense, guys. I look forward to speakers to you on the next episode. Take care. Bye-bye.
