A Conversation On Why Men Stay Silent When They’re Struggling The Most
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Every year we lose more men to suicide and overdose than we can easily talk about and the men most at risk are often the ones who've been taught they're not allowed to ask for help. The "honor or die" culture tells guys to be stoic, self-sufficient, and silent, and that silence is exactly where we lose people. In this episode, Tim sits down with Khara Crosswaite. a TEDx speaker, educator, and clinician who trains the next generation of therapists on suicide prevention to unpack what's really driving these deaths of despair and what any of us can do about it.Together they reframe suicide as something rooted in pain rather than a desire for death, dismantle the myths that keep people from reaching out, and get honest about the fear that comes with loving someone who's hurting. This one is heavy. If it starts to hurt while you listen, step away and take care of yourself.
What This Episode Covers:
1. Suicide is about pain, not death. When you look at it through the lens of pain, the "why" starts to make sense. Many men convince themselves their family would be better off without them often tangled up with money, providing, and a sense of no longer being useful.
2. The "honor or die" culture is killing men. Stoicism with a lowercase "s" the belief that you always have to be stone leaves men unable to connect. Kara and Tim look at who's most isolated, why rural and "cowboy West" states top the list, and how men on both the right and left end up alone for different reasons.
3. Ask, don't assume: "What's keeping you alive?" One of the biggest mistakes is handing someone your list of reasons to stay. Stay curious instead. What protects you may not protect the person in front of you — and asking the question directly does not plant the idea.
If you or someone you love is struggling: Call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call, text, or chat 988 in the US). You can also call on behalf of someone you care about and be coached through the conversation. Silence is where we lose people. Reaching out won't tip anything over. It might save a life.
