Digitisation, Digitalisation & Digital Transformation

Marketable Season 1 Episode 5

Understanding where your organization stands in this digital evolution is critical for strategic planning and resource allocation. Many companies claim to be digitally transformed when they've merely digitized or digitalized certain aspects of their operations.

This misunderstanding can lead to complacency and missed opportunities.

When someone claims their company is "digitally transformed," it's worth asking: Are they just scanning documents (digitization)? Are they making processes smarter (digitalization)? Or are they actually changing how and why they do business (digital transformation)?

The distinction matters enormously for competitiveness and long-term survival in today's digital economy.

Olusegun:

digitization, digitalization and digital transformation what's the real difference and why should you care? All right, let's settle this once and for all, guys. Digitalization, digitalization and digital transformation these three words they sound like they dropped from one sci-fi movie or off one consultation or consultant presentation. A lot of people throw them around without actually knowing what they mean. So today we're cutting through that jargon. No test with definition, just real talk. How it is marketable, world podcast.

Olusegun:

Let's take the first one digitalization. Right, let's call it paper to paper to pdf. Move right, think of it as a step one in digital glow. Digitalization is simply taking something analog and making it what? Digital? See that shelf in accounting in hr. That dusty file now is now a pdf on your computer. See that cash payment that you write um stuff now it's now a printed invoice that you mail. It's basic, but it's important because without this stage nothing else happens. But here's the thing just kind all your paper files and saving them on hard drive or google drive does not mean you are innovating, but that's where digitalization comes in. Let's say that is making works matter, not the detail. Digitalization is going from paper to pdf, right. Digitalization is making that p PDF actually work for you. So instead of just scanning invoices, you have automated invoice processing. Instead of just keeping data on Excel, customer data on Excel and everything, you have a CRM that personalizes interaction. And even if I was just sending an email, I want to go and leave. You have, you know, hr plus. You see the difference.

Olusegun:

Digitalization is about efficiency. It is when work businesses actually mix technology. But does that mean that you are fully transformed? Nope, that's where the big one comes in Digital transformation, changing the whole game. If digitalization is turning paper to PDF, digitalization is making process smarter, then digital transformation, that's where the entire business reinvents itself. So remember the guys that digitized dvds? Right, they transformed out. We stream and entertain ourselves. Now you know them right. Remember the guys that also changed that transportation itself operates now in the world. Now banks have also gone in that direction. Digital transformation isn't just about using technology, guys. It's about rethinking how you do business. So next time when someone says to you our company is literally transformed, ask them are you just scanning documents, so that's the digestion stage are you making processes smarter that's visualization or are you changing how and the way you actually do business? Because, trust me, there is a huge difference. Save it, share it with someone who needs to hear it and catch you on the next one on Marketable.
