Posture-lating with Posture Ellie
Posture & Hypermobility
In this episode, Posture Ellie defines how a posture practice can help with both 'types' of hypermobility. There's the more common type, where someone has one (or a few) hypermobile/hyperextensive joints, typically the knees and elbows. This type of hypermobility is a straight forward movement and posture issue, caused by the joints on either side not performing functionally (causing the hypermobile joint to compensate and overload). The other type of hypermobility is that caused by a hypermobility syndrome (Ehlers Danlos (EDS), Marfan, Stickler to name a few). The causes are both genetic and unknown. Posture Ellie hypothesises that, much like the work of Dr Gabor Mate, that there could be an element of nervous system overload at play. However, regardless of syndrome and regardless of cause, hypermobility conditions really benefit from the balance and strength focus of posture exercises. She finishes by giving tips on how she'd approach posture when working with someone with EDS, based off her experience with previous EDS clients.
